Filmfare Awards : Jai Bolo Beimaan Ki

So the results are out.. and there are no shakes in terms of surprises, making the results less exciting than ever… The black beauty is also loosing out its charm with every passing year.. Filmfare is now reduced to one of the awards and not THE award of the industry.. Interestingly Yash and Aditya Chopra are confered with the Power award (seems they could not decide who is more powerful at home, Yash ji or Aditya Chopra.. Seems giving it to one would make another unhappy.. so lets make both of them happy together.. After all Filmfare business is about keeping favourable stars happy)…

Anyway I would like to take you all back to 1973, 25 years earlier and introduce you to the filmfare all time “power” award.. The year when real power play was on display at the awards..The all time power award goes to Sohan Lal Kanwar. Take a look at the results of 1972 awards. Politically,Poetically and Literally the film that deserved most of the awards got them and the film was “Be.Imaan” produced and directed by Sohan Lal Kanwar.

Best Director : BeImaan, Sohan Lal Kanwar
Best Film : BeImaan, Sohan Lal Kanwar
Best Actor : BeImaan, Manoj Kumar
Best Music : BeImaan, Shankar Jaikishan
Best Lyricist : “Jai Bolo BeImaan Ki”, BeImaan, Varma Malik
Best Singer Male : “Jai Bolo BeImaan Ki”, BeImaan, Mukesh
Best Supporting Actor : Pran

But in the team of BeImaan that year, there stood one Imaandaar member of the Beimaan team who refused to receive the award. Intrestingly the one who has played most numbers of BeImaan characters on Screen, Pran saab, refused to receive his own award for Best Supporting Actor.. He raised his voice against BeImaan getting the best music award and openly supported Paakeezaah for award not Be.Imaan.. [The other strong contender was Amar Prem.. (Anubhav, Baawarchi, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Seeta aur Geeta, Jawaani Deewani and Laal Patthar too released in the same year)].. Even considering all other categories 1972 turned out to be most (Film) Unfair awards of all time.. Pran saab did not received his award in protest and showed the industry the true character of real life pran… The industry is missing you Pran saab and we are missing you on screen…

for 1972 winners, the winner song says it all…
Jai Bolo BeImaan Ki! Jai Bolo!!!

Should we call it the Anthem of Filmfare awards?
Hum bolega to bologe ki bolta hai…..

Yes filmfare is very preictiv ein giving its awrards.

the ones who annot be given popular awards are given critics choice.

But actually you cant blame them.

According to you, who should decide the awardees and how?

a jury of around 10 with 5 from film industry and other 5 frm different walks of life??

    kya bolte ho??

You run an award show in the stuiods of one of the bigwigs of the industry and then you expect the awards to be fair Pshaw..It was always rigged and will always be rigged.

I mean Pawan Malhotra not getting an award, Gul Panang not even receiving a mention, what do you think it is? Fair..Bollocks This award is like given to the best lap dogs who turn good cart wheels in front of the powers that be

I stopped watching this a long time back becuase I simply get aggravated and start to throw things at the TV. :-)

In India, the ‘awards’ are not meant for promoting good cinema or honoring the best technicians and artists. They are simply ‘events’ that are constituted by TV Channels as annual TRP events or clutter breakers (they have created so much clutter already!)
    See for yourself:
    Zee: Zee Cine Awards
    Sony: Filmfare Awards
    Star: Star Screen Awards
    Sony Max: Max Stardust Awards

Add to these IIFA and GIFA!

Hollywood has only 2 awards which everyone looks forward to: Golden Globes and Oscars. And I accept that these awards are not always fare, still they have little credibility.

We send pathetic movies (like Eklavya!) and then cry ’sour grapes’ (read ‘We don’t need oscars to prove ourselves’) when we fail. I had written once about it, you can read here: http://removing.blogspot.com/2006/09/why-is-oscar-paheli-for-us.html

    @Pavan,
Pran saab to bas ek hee hain.
There is a scene in Halla Bol where corrupt friend of CM tries to bribe Pankaj Kapoor near Swimming Pool and PK listens attentively all his rubbish talks and later just pat his cheeks as if playing with a kid.
These awards etc are same things. If few people are organising them and distributing among themselves then why to object these private ceremonies. They are celebrating as people celebrate Birthday and other parties at their homes.
If actors who have got awards think they were the best in 2007 then it may be their wishful thinking. Reality everybody knows inside.
There are 100 of awards these days and naturally importance of filmfare or any other awards has been reduced.
These are private parties for film stars and should be seen with same impression. They may distribute anything among them. winners will not become Dilip Kumar or Jack Nicholson or Meena Kumari or Ingrid Bergman just by holding a black statue. everybody knows his/her limitations and strengths.

‘we don’t need oscars to prove ourselves’

it is not ’sour grapes’ case.
it is some adult talking amidst of school children.
    prove to whom?
    prove what ?

    what’s this hankering for oscars?
when this show of teenage school children mentality will stop?
    this need for appreciation ?

i say stop sending movie to oscars?
    break this mindless pattern?
it will be realy great if some producer does this. once his movie is selected and than he rejects to send his movie?

    anyways,
kuch bhi karo, per oscar pane ke liye ‘no country for old man’ jaise filme mat banana

The Beimaan stuff is so correct.Another worst part was that the same year the best actress award went to Hema Malini for Seeta and Geeta when there was a performance like MeenaKumari in Pakeezah. And no you cannot also say that it was due to popularity as Pakeezah was a classic and is still remembered today.Incidentally that was the only filmfare best actress award that Hema Malini ever received.

No mater which award you pick, you’ll always find instances of a lesser worthy person getting it. Show me an award that has never been sullied by wrong choices. For Oscars, I just can’t forget that Rocky scored over Taxi Driver that year.

That said, I consider 1972 as a black mark in the face of filmfare awards. It was THE award to get in those days and in 1972 it became fairly obvious that it could be rigged. These days however, it is just another award in a never-ending list of awards and has lost its significance. Things have gotten worse because of the wrong choices year after year (this year’s list is better in my opinion)

arre sab wo bhool gaye kya jab Best Supporting Actor ke liye Manoj Bajpai (Satya) ke bajai award “SALMAN KHAN”(Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai) ko diya gaya thha… that was the last time I saw filmfare awards.

    @ vishrant,

why this sudden “no country for old man” bashing dude?? On the contrary, NCfOM is the most unlikely oscar winner for perhaps decades.
What do ya think shud have won, American Gangster perhaps?
And about the oscars and filmfares, how long will it take us to admit that as far as films are concerned, we produce rubbish?
We like it or not, even the “Commercial and manupulative” hollywood comes up with much better films than us every year. We can deny, ignore and ridicule and can push it under the carpet, but the truth will remain truth. Look at Korea, South Africa and China and see where we are rotting. As for the evil film killer hollywood, a star like George Clooney can come up with a “Good Night and Good Luck” which most of the average cinegoers will tolerate not more than 20 mins, without caring of their star status and image. Think of SRK doing the same(dont give the swadesh and chak de bullshit). Hollywood does award good foreign films(watch no man’s land, the lives of others and all about my mother), if we dont get it, we are just not that good.
Its not that hollywood does not have its evil sides, but we are the last people to critisize them.

  13. vishrant on February 26th, 2008 7:51 am

    @ rudro

just for the sake of diversity.
    there is already one ‘ncfom’
    why make other.
    make something original.

    nothing against hollywood.
hollywood is standard not for nothing.
    they deserve it.

    my concern is
    why copy
they remain true to there context.
    so should we.

Even they are called POPULAR awards, I still believe they are outrageously biased and not fair.

  15. Neeraja on February 26th, 2008 12:11 pm

arey whatever happened to PFC awards???
you guys are all talk no work! x(
    :D

  16. RK on February 27th, 2008 6:57 am

    @Neerja,
all work, less or no talk.
Everybody is entitled to give his/her own award.
I will be giving mine for best actor category this week.
Recipients take our awards or not, does not matter. we have to acknowledge what is better there.

  17. Forget awards :: Can on March 12th, 2008 5:56 am

[...] not all are benevolent and moralistic like Pran Saab (see PFC POST) , who pointed towards better performances and refused to accept award given to him and his film in [...]

  18. Mahi on April 17th, 2008 9:14 pm

I believe that all these awards have not been fair this year (2008)!
SRK was good in Chak de but i believe not over and above Akshaye Khanna in Gandhi my father and Abhishek Bachchan in Guru. I believe Darshan Jariwala was also much better in Gandhi my father. Two good movies were completely ignored in the awards and i felt that was pathetic!
I also believe that Vidya Balan was brilliant in Bhool Bhulaiaya, it’s not easy doing that sort of a role. Kareena was just normal.
Akshay Kumar was brilliant too in Bhool Bhulaiya. Why are these actors always ignored when SRK is nominated? Who is he? [-(:-?

  19. Anirudha Bhattacharjee on October 23rd, 2008 3:10 am

    Pavan,
Don’t forget 1972 also was the yr of Mere Jeevan Saathi .. this was not even nominated.

The refreshing felling I have is awards are useful only too a certain extent.. today nobody remembers Be.Imaan. Today , I doubt whether anybody has forgotten Amar Prem.. even parts of Pakeezah linger as sweet memory. Mere Jeewan Saathi, Lal Pathar, HKHK shall be remembered for years to go.
