Filmfare barbaads
The 52nd Filmfare Awards ended with much and mush (read: the Bachchan parivar milan) aplomb. However, the awards nominations and most of the results were a sheer disappointment (at least, to me). For the ceremony that was once considered even prestigious than the coveted National Awards, Filmfare is now reduced to a poor shadow of its glorious past.
For once the stage graced filmmakers like Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, actors like Dilip Kumar, Balraj Shani and actresses like Meena Kumari and Nutan. There were films like Do Beegha Zameen, Anand and Chakra. Now they have given way to duds like Fanaa, Krissh and Dhoom 2.
Undoubtedly, the above mentioned films might be stylish, slick and blockbusters but no sane cinema lover will consider them classics which should vie for the celebrated Filmfare Awards.
Hrithik Roshan looked well, fought well and danced well in Dhoom 2. But give me one scene from the film which proved to the reason for his nomination for the Best Actor category. Ironically, he went ahead to win the award also! The same holds true for his superhero act in Krissh.
Interestingly, films like Taxi NO 9211 didn’t even figure in the list of nomination where Nana Patekar had given such a marvellous performance as an angst-driven cabbie. Sadly, John Abraham was given a nomination for his non existent act in Baabul but not in his able support in Taxi.
Gul Panag’s work in Dor definitely deserved her a nomination if not an award…but alas…no luck here as well. Same holds good for her director Nagesh Kukunoor whose name didn’t figure anywhere in the list.
Films like Omkara, Dor, Lage Raho…, Khosla… which actually tried to do something novel were given a few awards as a piece of consolation. Thankfully, the technical awards were a breath of fresh air. But who the hell cares for technical awards and the tecnicians for that matter?
Naseerudddin Shah is unarguably one of the finest actors of the country but I sincerely didn’t feel his caricature kind of role in Krissh was even worthy of a nomination…It looked straight out of those Shakal and Jogi Thakur kind of of villainous roles.
Regarding music…THE chartbuster of the year—Gangster, which had the maximum hits playing across all radio stations didn’t even figure anywhere. Instead, the music director, Pritam was nominated for his other composition Dhoom 2…which again wasn’t even worthy of being nominated. One hit song in the entire film can’t possibly be the reason for a nomination.
Two high points of the show: A R Rahman’s performance. It was actually a relief from the irritating list of nominations. And Deepak Dobriyal’s award. Truly, the victory of the underdog.
Much to my guess performers like him aren’t recognised well. I did notice the surprise and unsure look in Rakesh Roshan’s eyes when he announced his name.
Rakeysh Mehra said 2006 had some path-breaking cinema and that the new-age directors are ready and capable of continuing the illustrious legacy of their seniors. I wonder what he meant. If Fanaa, Krissh, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Dhoom 2 are path breaking then I sincerely hope we better be walking on the beaten path.

I’m with you brother.
I am not going to rant about it now. But everytime i think of it I lose it.
The best part of filmfare was when Salman Khan beat Manoj Bajpayee as BHIKU MATRE.
I will never forget the look on Salman’s face. He looked so surprised. That was probably the only moment in Salman’s life when he acted. And he acted good in those few mins
hahahah …
sad the filmfares !!! i believe they actually held it in Yashraj lawns ….
mainak - ur comment is =))=))=))
i agree fully with Illuzon. Filmfare had a history and it is supposed to be a well coveted award function which caters to new innovative ideas and filmmakers who have contributed immensely to indian cinema. And here i culd find was only backlashing & bickering performance by sharukh who had no sense of behaviour & was not aware of wht he was suppose to say. filmfare is either become a toy to sharukh / yash chopra/ karan johar & other bunch of jokers who dont have a true sense of real cinema. Films like Dor, Khosla ka Ghosla which needed a power packed support from bigwigs was kept languishing without any mention. Filmfare is just became a fracas. Good aamir had known beforehand & he chose not to attend these family oriented sagas..eg bacchan. Jaya bachaan got a lfetime award and not a would-be-mil award..it was not necessary for her to go on abt her future daughter-in-law…plz spare the sob family dramas on stage atleast..there are more prominent issues to be handled here…
LOL…@mainak…i can understand. when karisma’s role in raja hindustani can beat tabu’s in maachis i don’t think i need to say more.
@ Kartik…did u notice SRK sayin time and agin that Yash chopra is the father of bollywood…Whoa! the BIG DADDY
@mysti-gal. True. Somehow post ash-abhi sagaai..i feel the entire Bachchan clan leaves to scope to showcase their new risha and their would be nayi naveli dulhan. gosh! what melodrama!!!
hey guys..i agree with all of u..most of the nominees were crap..its all humbug….waste of time…
It shud be called Bachan-Chopra awards. WTF was Yash Chopra blabbering in his tuti phut Englih. He is a Hindi (HINDI NOT ENGLISH) movie director. He shud be proud and pleased to give speech in Hindi.~X(
Atleast Javed Akhtar was tru to his profession
Hrithik Roshan for Best Actor, this has to be a really sick joke
Why the fuck do they give these awards? Why not sell them by auction, if all we have is the YashRaj and Rakesh Roshan groups taking them?
Damn Bollywood, and damn Filmfare Awards.
I know they have become FilmFarce awards, but this is ridiculous.
Does this bunch of self obsessed narcisstic jerk bags seriously think they can be a player on World cinema?
Fuck them
Anyway seriously Illuzion, the day they gave Anil Kapoor the Best Actor award for Beta, the awards lost all meaning.
I mean look at the decisions
Salman Khan over Manoj Bajpai for Best Supporting Actor?
What the fucking hell is that?
And Kahoo Na Pyaar Hai, the best movie? Oh boy that movie was a mishmash of Kasme Vaade and tamil Love birds.
SRK winning every time.
Aamir Khan getting it for his worst performance in Raja Hindustani.
I am willing to lead an expedition to blow up that Times of India group and their bunch of egoistic jerks, so that we dont have to suffer this farce. Any takers here.
Aur yeh saala Bachan parivar. Saale publicity ke phookat log hai. I admire AB as an actor, but sorry, i have lost considerable respect for the way he refuses to call a spade a spade.
I normally never write like this, but listening to this farce, is just bringing out all the abuses in me.
i did not watch it but I did watch A R Rahman’s act. And I was gutted that it was very disappointing. It seemed like he did not want to do the act. He was uncomfortable with the mike - he could not sing properly and he was just uncomfortable with the whole concept. I do not know why he did it - he should not have done it. It is very unlike of him.
Ratnakar…m with u. But what to do …all awards r the same…iifa, gifa, screen, sansui, zee n god knows what all. i dont feel like using the word “award” anymore…they have corrupted it so much. we really need alternative. some real big alternative. OZ Bhaiyaa…kya kehte ho??
@HG…compltly agree. U could read it all over his face. Do u think they made a deal with him….RDB was anyway teh best album of the year. Isi bahane isse gana bhi gawa lo!!
few things to mention before i go any further:
1) the nominations were the most ridiculous ones for filmfare this year
2) hrithik & kajol did not deserve to win the the awards for the best actor/actress categories
3) abhishek didn’t deserve the best supporting act either (though he was the only watchable thing in KANK) - but how else can you the first couple of bollywood in the same frame all smiles and not trying to get away from media.
now - despite everything … dont you think they got most of the top awards correct. RDB for film, director and music, konkona for supporting act, saif/warsi for more supporting acts, deepak dobriyal for even more supporting act, aamir/kareena/hirani for critics, and some technical awards to omkara, lage raho and rdb.
i think that’s the best they have done in years. most of the deserving people had something to take back home.
the corporate were happy. the people got to see the actors do their stuff. i am sure the media must have gotten a lot of gossip of how SRK passed by AB etc.
it’s entertainment - bollywood style. nothing more.
filmfare are NOT oscars - for they are sponsored by corporate houses, and not by an academy of distinguished people in filmmaking.
let’s not treat them as one either.
how about KAREENA KAPOOR getting Critics award for best actress ???
WHy not Dimple Kapadia for Being Cyrus??
Why not Konkana Sen Sharma for Omakara??
Why not ohh so many others…
Iguess FIlmfare should change the name to FAKE-FARE AWARDS
:-w
Why not PFC organize a Hindi Film Awards function in Second Life? I’m sure the media will go ga-ga over this!
when i was young i use to like all these awards especially the performances. As i grew up and exposed myself to hollywood and other cinema I feel ashamed that we dont make few quality movies a year. I was watching oscars and they were showing clips from old to new foreign language movies and i was expecting to see atleast one desi movie but to my suprise there was none not even satyajit ray or laggan.
Well thats were we stand.
agree with most comments made by you Illuzon.
So the ‘tamasha’ of the year is over.
Totally in tandem with Ratnakar’s comments.
The Film’un’fair awards prove once again that whether you know the art or not, if you belong to the Yashraj or Bachchan or Rakesh clan, you are bound to get an award or something or the other.
Hrithik Roshan getting an award for Dhoom 2, what was there to act in that film other than just brandishing his body and dancing?
Senior Bachchan just seems to lose his sanity with each passing day. How low can this so called “First Family of Bollywood (I hate that when they address them this way)” get for publicity!!!
The only positive thing about this event was SRK not getting an award. Personally I am not against him but just an opinion of mine.
