  2. Raj on March 21st, 2007 10:49 pm

Mahanadhi - Kamal Hassan at his best.

    Megh,
Watch any of the recent Iranian films. You’ll see what filmmakers can do with the lowest budgets, the most stringent laws, unimaginable censorship and every possible constraint that you can imagine. The actors and their performances are superb. At times you find it hard to believe that they are acting. And the scripts, what can I say… Amazing. We could learn a thing or two.
“Rang e Khoda”, “Baran”, “Bacheha-Ye Aseman” are a few.
Don’t restrict yourself to bollywood and hollywood. Step out of your box and watch films from around the world. You will be inspired by some of the stuff that other industries are churning out. The National film archives just down the road from FTII has a great collection. And usually these days, DVDs are freely available in the big cities.

I agree with Greg. Last 3 films that have made an impact on me and were brilliant
    - Pan’s Labyrinth
    - Children of Heaven (Bacheha-Ye Aseman)
    - Nowhere in Africa (Nirgendwo in Afrika)

If you want to focus on performances alone, my suggestion would be to stay away from films with high production values and focus on lower budget films, perhaps adaptations of plays, so the audience can focus solely on acting and reacting. Some films I would recommend for actors to watch are:

“Closer” - Directed by Mike Nichols.

“Death of Salesman” (This was a made for TV from 1985 where Dustin Hoffman plays Willy Loman - Stunning performances from the whole cast)

“Let’s Talk” - witness the power of Boman Irani in this film. I’m not a fan of the movie, but Boman is absolutely amazing.

“Glengary Glen Ross” - based on a play by David Mamet - the most amazing performances by Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Alan Arkin.

“American Beauty” - This too is adapted from a play, and Spacey and Anette Benning are just brilliant.

“State and Main” - directed by David Mamet. Ensemble cast headed by William H Macy. Superb acting.

“Wag The Dog” - written by David Mamet, directed by Barry Levinson, starring De Niro & Hoffman. Superb writing, brilliant acting.

“The Cooler” - a small independent film starring William H Macy and Maria Bello. Just watch how Macy gets into the skin of his character.

“Garam Hawa” - Balraj Sahni at his best.

I have to agree with Vijay on most of the names….

CLOSER - I had to change my opinion on CLIVE OWEN( thanks to those BMW films) after this films.

LETS TALK - one of the best on indian screen.

GLENGARY GLEN ROSS- this is just unbelievable.

MEMORIES OF MURDER - Kang-ho Song at his best.

HALF NELSON - Perfect example of a performance oriented film. And whatta performance it is.

    IRREVERSABLE - VINCENT Cassel…..

    Any Toshir

There are many great movies but if performances are to be focussed the first names that come to my mind are:

    1) Since Otar left : Almost unbelievable that it is acting. No background music and no editing gimmicks. Pure acting.

    2) Monster : After watching the movie, I saw the documentary on the original “Eileen wournos” and I couldn’t tell who’s who.

  10. mainak on March 22nd, 2007 7:38 pm

    Varun
PLATOON can be argued as the best VIETNAM movie ever… Not WORLD WAR II.
I would add AMERICAN HISTORY X & SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION to my list too.

In hindi the good ones that no one suggested are ardhsatya, drohkaal! BTw the german movie ‘the lives of others’ that won the oscar is brilliant too!!
