Finally Someone is talking…

at least one of the parties….

After quite a few months solemn silence from both Aamir and Amol, the latter lets it rip in an interview posted on
AllBollywood

Thus spoketh Amol

It’s misreported that I didn’t like the edited version of TZP. There was no question of not liking the edited version because my wife Deepa was editing the material in Panchgani as we were shooting. We were all very proud of the film. Then we had a wrap-up party. And that’s when Aamir announced he was the director of the film. That’s when I got to know of his intentions.

I’m trying to put it behind me… Let me just say, right from choosing all the kids for the parts to the final editing, I was right there on board… I wanted to preserve the kids’ natural innocence. So I never auditioned them. I used to engage them in discussions and workshops with the camera held out of their vision by an assistant.

It has made me question myself. Where did I go wrong? Had I not been there throughout the shooting for every take including Aamir’s wonderful performance, I’d have understood that I’ve gone wrong somewhere. But I’ve enacted lines for all the actors in TZP. It hurt a lot. But I didn’t want a confrontation.

Plagiarism… Betrayal.. its all bursting through the seams in Bollywood this week….
Now we wait and watch for the rebuttal.

i have an issue with him coming out with venom after so long … as per the interview, Aamir took over the directorial rain 6-days into the shooting. If he had issues, he should not have allowed that to happen. He should have come out in open then. Also – throughout the promotion, Aamir kept on telling his side of the story, giving due credit to Amole. He could’ve refuted him then.
Being sensitive, Amole is naturally bitter. But coming out after the success of the movie, that too 4 months after it – is very petty.

doesn’t suit the man who came up with such a sensitive and brilliant story/script. he should’ve raised the issue when Aamir first decided to take over. He should’ve rebutted when Aamir explained his side of the story during the promotion of the movie. Now saying that he was the director of the movie is extremely unfortunate, and appears a case of sour grapes.

If Amol had cried foul earlier then people would accuse him of sabotaging the film. Shame on Aamir for taking due credit away from this sensitive, creative, wonderful man.

Well i guess now Aamir is gonna come up with a justification on his blog, the way he did for the Olympic torch relay.

Honestly considering the protests over the Olympics worldwide, with PM’s of Canada and UK, now refusing to participate, Aamir’s justification sounds really hollow.

Aamir is pretty good at making the people believe his words.

Being a Canadian I can say that the reason Canada opted to honour the boycott and not participate in the Olympic Torch relay is primarily because Vancouver, Canada is hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. Forget a torch relay, we have all the ceremonies right here (literally right HERE… I’m working in the building next to where the new Convention Center is being built and about 10 minutes away from the Stadium where the Opening and Closing ceremonies will be held. How I’ll get to and from work within all that chaos is a whole other story).

  9. Tony Mera Naam Tony Mera Naam says:

As for Amole Gupte/Aamir Khan and who was the TRUE Director for TZP, the question remains: Who had the final say? If Amole wanted to handle a certain scene a certain way, and Aamir had another “vision” for the same scene, then how would the scene actually play out? Who was instructing the cinematographer, the lighting director, the art director and the AD’s on blocking, lighting, and overall scene setup?

If it was Amole, then he’s got a legitimate claim to be Director. But he also has a whole damn film crew to back that statement up. Or he doesn’t.

Until one of THEM speak up, and say something to the effect that “I took suggestions for a few people but what Amole said is what we went with” then sorry to say but he was not the Director.

And if that indeed is the case, then I think that he was given his due credit for all his creative inputs, as immeasurable as they may be.

  10. rextreme rextreme says:

But Amol’s interview says it all:

How different is the final film from what you shot?

“What I shot and what you saw aren’t different at all. My narration is the same as the married print. Of course, Aamir was there with me throughout.”

Q: Where did your creative inputs in TZP end?

    A
: They ended when Aamir, his wife, my wife and I saw the film’s first edit.

Q: And he didn’t shoot anything on his own?

A: Yes, he re-shot the first six days’ material. I didn’t participate in that because I stood by the rushes of my first six days’ shooting. However, what he shot wasn’t radically different from my style.

Q: The standard inference is that the project was taken over from you?

A: I don’t understand this business of taking over. When I was around how could the project be taken over? What would any competent director be doing for 109 shooting days? It makes no sense at all.

BOO Aamir, shabby behavior. And I disagree with him on his Olympic stance too. Even the Emperor of Japan has declined attending, and Aamir will run with a prayer for the Tibetans? Fat lot of good that will do for the Tibetans – his protest and abstaining would have done a lot more.

I am sure if Gahjini was releasing right now he would be abstaining and getting a lot of press out of that.

Why? Do most directors perform consistently? What if his next is a beautiful gem or a piece of junk? Even Ashutosh followed up Swades and Lagaan with Jodhaa Akbar – and let us not forget that the prelude to all these was Pehla Nasha! The bets evidence is staring us in the face in the words of Mr. Gupta.

Read in yesterdays Filmfare issue that Amir was not happy and he took over the project ( after giving an option to Amole, to go to another producer ). Aamir paid Amole whatever money was decided earlier. Also promised a share in profits. A week after Aamir took over, Amole’s wife called Amir for a meeting and then actually walked in the meeting with a lawer ! She demanded 25 lacs as remuneration, 25 lacs for creative consultancy and 25 to 50 lacs from the profits that would get in future. Amir was put off and he asked her a specific figure from the profits. She said 25 lakh. Aamir took out his cheque book and wrote a cheque of 75 lakh !!. He said to Amole that it was the end of their relationship.
    Kaun sachcha kaun jhootha !!
