First Day of Dev.D

Well, what do you know?! Today (27th February 2008) was the first day of filming Dev.D. Earlier Anurag and his crew went to Reading to film a couple of scenes; I was not able to visit the location, but fortunately, they were shooting a couple of more scenes in evening and in Central London, to be precice, the location was a ship - which was just parked opposite London Eye.

And I was there, to see what all filming is about; meet Anurag & his crew. So I shook Anurag’s hand, Abhay’s hand and rest of the crew, as Anurag introduced me to everyone. Anyway, it took them one hour to shoot a 30 seconds scene and one more scene was left - perhaps they were waiting for correct light for the scene; I left before that! I suppose, filming can be quite laborious! My first impression is that, the technical crew works more hard than either the director or actors. No? I could be wrong cos I have only seen one hour of shooting!

I do not know if I am allowed to share the scene or not, so won’t write about it - and I am informed that he will soon start blogging about the film.

Anyway, I don’t have any stories to share; sorry, to disappoint you guys. I am not a film buff, so could not construct a conversation with Anurag or anybody else. I wish the heroine was there, so I at least could have tried flirting with her and maybe then would have had a lot to talk about, eh?

But, I did briefly chat with everyone and there was this guy (I forgot his name - he is holding the clipboard in one of the photo, sorry mate!) who had arrived today in morning from Mumbai and started working straight away! They do work hard and long hours! I found watching the filming for an hour quite hard work (mind you, I am a bit lazy, though)!

[Edit: Anurag on Dev.D]

But have a few photos to share (which were taken on me mobile, so are a bit…):

Good one HG..but, saala..u need to talk a bit more..now come on..with Anurag there….there is no tension…u will not find many filmmakers as chilled as he is…so use the oppurtunity…and beg borrow or steal a good camera yaar..

  7. Monica on February 27th, 2008 4:33 pm

    Mmm… Nice location!

I am not a film buff, so could not construct a conversation with Anurag or anybody else.

Oh, come on! That sounds more like the kind of thing I would do, but… HG?! :-?

My first impression is that, the technical crew works more hard than either the director or actors. No?

That is the feeling I have always had from “making ofs” and stuff like that.

    Anyway, seems you had a nice time! Thanks for sharing. Next time introduce me to Abhay Deol. :w;

    ROHIT KHAITAN

  12. Honhaar Goonda on February 27th, 2008 11:41 pm

yep, behind the clipboard, it is Abhay Deol standing - wearing a baggy sort of cap, not a wig.

karitk, I did speak to everyone, but it was a trivial conversation…..

Vasan.. yep, Rohit.. I remember it now… thanks. Howcome you did not come?

  13. Bhaiiravi on February 28th, 2008 12:35 am

Well well well! I haven’t heard about this film… shame you can’t share any more but I love the write up!

    B xx

  14. Honhaar Goonda on February 28th, 2008 12:50 am

B, Dev.D is an adaptation of the novel ‘Devdas’ - set in today’s era. Abhay Deol plays 21st century Devdas and there are two new actresses… the film is set in London, Punjab and Delhi.

  15. arun prakash on February 28th, 2008 1:27 am

HG, nice introductory post on Dev D. I too was wondering what Dev D was about…..a contemporary adaptation of Devdas sounds interesting….is Anurag the writer too ?

  16. Honhaar Goonda on February 28th, 2008 1:54 am

Arun, it was Abhay Deol’s idea and Anurag has written the script.

  17. Phoenixnu on February 28th, 2008 2:31 am

kya hai yeh…kyun hai yeh…kaun hai yeh…kahan hai yeh..ok..london. Gooooooooonda….tu kyun hai zindaaaaaaa!!!!!!

  18. Honhaar Goonda on February 28th, 2008 2:40 am

there was one trivial fact i found interesting.. if it is a silent scene, then they do not clack the clapboard. the clapboard is only clacked if the scene has any dialogues, i think..

  19. Joyjeet on February 28th, 2008 4:11 am

OZbhai, is it time to create a movie blog for Dev.D?

  20. RK on February 28th, 2008 5:23 am

    @H.G,
You have made history. Reporting a Hindi film shooting from UK’s land.
So AK’s Devdas, like Sanjay Bhansali’s Devdas, has connection with Vilayat.
    Vilayati Dev Babu.
    Achacha hai.
You did not talk with Abhay Deol? Dont lose the opportunity to have a special interview with him.
If you like people can send you quetions to be included in your questionaire.

  21. suchita b on February 28th, 2008 5:44 am

Man how much I envy this! Cn somebody please tell me who’s the cinematographer/DOP? And since the script is kickass and hugely controversial [according to the indian standards] am eagerly looking forward to it. Please keep the posts coming in.

  22. Anand Kadam on February 28th, 2008 5:52 am

  32. sags on February 29th, 2008 12:42 pm

where do u work suchita ?..just curiosity abt where two films are cast for, together? :)

  33. suchita b on February 29th, 2008 9:16 pm

Sags, looks like you are new in the industry, otherwise you would know that production houses cast for 3-4 films together..never mind…TIME and only TIME….

  34. sags on March 1st, 2008 3:13 am

no i am aware ..actually i should have framed my question as where else …and why do i need to be in the film industry to know this , its all over the media ..such and such actor signing a film deal and stuff and as aamir khan pointed out they have no scripts…but casting for smaller roles together for two films is not a very common thing or i am not aware or may be you work with yash raj and other factories .
oh time …are you giving away somethintg there ??? ..clever!..are you with mirchi movies or something(isnt that what thye call their films division)?

  35. filmibhai on March 3rd, 2008 11:34 am

  38. PrettyInPurple on March 10th, 2008 8:41 pm

When will the movie be released overseas and more importatntly on DVD?

  39. Honhaar Goonda on March 11th, 2008 12:01 am

PrettyInPurple, I am not sure if the film will be released overseas. We will just have to wait & see. The film is stated to release at the end of year - in Oct/Nov.

‘Sides, they have only started to shoot the film.
