First Look: Official trailers for The Last Legion

Hmmm. Not bad, but not impressive either.
The first official trailers for Aishwarya Rai’s first mainstream Hollywood film- Doug Lefler’s sword-and-sandals epic The Last Legion – based on Valerio Massimo Manfredi’s novel of the same name, are finally out on Youtube.com. Also starring are Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley and Thomas Sangster.
The film looks just about decent though, and doesn’t quite have the epic look it should- feels pretty unspectacular and a bit second- rate, considering the supposed $ 60 million budget, but not too bad either- should be watchable. Our very own Ms Rai (the to-be Mrs Bachchan, he-he!), by the way features very prominently and flaunts a toned body, Xenia- style swordfighting and a terrible accent. Here’s hoping her first real Hollywood adventure does not actually turn out to be a total misadventure.
By the way, here’s the synopsis from Sidcity.net:
| “Rome , 476AD. The Roman Empire is under threat. A mighty force for almost 500 years, at its height Rome’s power spread from Mesopotamia in the east to the Iberian peninsula in the west, from the Rhine and Danube in the north to Egypt in the south. This story follows the events surrounding the historical capture of Romulus Augustus and his imprisonment on the island of Capri .
On the eve of the ceremony to crown twelve-year-old Romulus Augustus (THOMAS SANGSTER) as the new emperor, the Barbarian general Odoacer (PETER MULLAN) arrives in Rome to make a deal with Orestes (IAIN GLEN),patrician and father of the young Caesar. Odoacer makes demands on the power of the Roman Empire , in fair exchange for his decade-long support of the Roman legions in the east. Orestes refuses. On the day of the coronation, as the whole of Rome gathers to watch the proceedings, Ambrosinus (SIR BEN KINGSLEY), the shaman who is a mentor and tutor to Romulus , predicts danger. Orestes is worried for his son’s safety and appoints Aurelius (COLIN FIRTH), the tribune of the fourth legion, as his personal guard. That night Aurelius and his legionnaires are confronted by a real danger ? Odoacer and his army of Goths have returned to the outskirts of Rome to conquer the city. With a deafening roar, the Barbarian army storm the city. A terrible battle ensues, the brutal invaders show no mercy and blood flows through the streets. With Orestes and his wife Julia slaughtered, Romulus is captured along with Ambrosinus and both are taken to the island fortress of Capri built by the emperor Tiberius. It is there that Romulus finds the mythical sword of Caesar that holds the prophecy ?One edge to defend, one to defeat; In Britannia was I forged?to fit the hand of he…who is destined to rule’. But not all the Roman legionnaires are dead. Aurelius is alive and when he learns that the Byzantine Empire will give Romulus sanctuary, he embarks on the journey to the coast accompanied by a small group of his men and a mysterious, black-clad Byzantine warrior. On the journey, Aurelius discovers what lies behind the black clothing – a young, beautiful woman called Mira (AISHWARYA RAI). Thanks to the strategic cunning of Ambrosinus and the fighting skill of Aurelius and Mira, Romulus is freed. But when the group arrive on shore, they learn that the Byzantines have joined forces with the Goths. Faced with such betrayal, the only course of action is to reach the one legion still loyal to Rome ? the ninth legion in Britannia. As they set off on their dangerous trek North in search of the last legion, Romulus discovers a new father figure in his protector Aurelius and together they embark on a new beginning.” |

i think it would be very intersting to see Ash’s acting in this kind of film.. but i believe that it would be difficult for her to survive in hollywood industry…
I dont have words to explain but I am disappointed with Aish…
I have not seen the movie, I dont know about her role…but there is something missing when you see her in the trailer. For a moment I felt, she doesnt deserve to be there. She is not looking confident at all and I’m gonna blame the Director and the actor for that.
Or may be I am wrong, its just cause I have only seen her dancing, singing and flirting on the screen.
Will write on this again.
Great post btw….
I don’t think Ash would be great in this film- I don’t think she looks underconfident but she’s trying too hard to look tough. Plus Doug Lefler is not a great director. Ash can act very well, provided the director is good- sample HDDCS, Devdas (Bhansali) (Not that I’m a Bhansali fan, but he does have his strengths as a filmmaker too), Raincoat (Rituparno Ghosh) and latest being Guru (Mani Ratnam). Still, will check it out just for kicks! And am I the only one who noticed Ms Rai’s shapely derriere?
OZ: Is there any Age criteria here at PFC? Now JB is exploring his wings in adult category, which Indian censor board does not allow:)
On serius note, You as founder of PFC may be charged legally to provide platform to adolascents to talk abt things which they shd once they cross atleast 18 years of their life:d
Ha Ha…that was wicked, RK!
hmm i am not sure about her acting.. i mean i think she does ok with portraying simple sad little beautiful indian girl… but other movies like dhoom, albela, kyun ho gaya na, etc etc.. werent great.. and i do agree with Jahan that she doesnt look tough for this film… i think i would just wait for the DVD..
Oh no!!
I dislike these Gladiator, Last Samurai, Troy kinda films..and this looks just like one of them!
Dont wanna see it..
But being the typical indian that I am, will go and see how she’s done.
No, I havent learnt my lesson after ‘Mistress of Flops’ and ‘Bride and Boredom’!!
Gosh, they were B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-D
OMG .. i totally agree with mistress of spice…i dont think could get any worse.. and i was so excited when Bride and Prejudice came out.. i made all my friends go.. only cuz Ash was in it and i wanted to support the movie.. while watching it i was feeling so bad… never doing that again!!
“But being the typical indian that I am, will go and see how she
i’ll check it out on DVD for the curiosity factor as well.. but she sure aint gonna pass as a warrior in my books!
Hahahaha….cheers Jahan!
If she’s bad in them, we’ll send her to the Big Brother house!
she sucks. thats all.
LOL steve.. it would be so intersting to see her on BB… i dont think she’ll be able to handle it like Shlipa did…
Ash is too big a star for silly ol’ Big Brother, yaar!
its not the question of how big of a star she is… but just thinking if she’ll be able to deal with it… i guess if people think shilpa is fake, i just wonder how they will see Ash na?.. i dont know just wondering as i have nothing else to do..
