Forget awards : Can’t we celebrate performances
As per the wisdom of ancient Indian sages and scholars, desire to earn name has been among one of the four basic desires any human being follows in his/her life. One wants to see his/her name inscribed in history and if not for long then local history chapter also helps in boosting his/her ego. If its not international award then national will do and if that’s also not possible then state award will also help and even if that’s also difficult then city based awards are there to bring temporary pink colour on the cheeks of the people. If nothing works then recognition and appreciation by friends and family members become indispensable for him/her to continue the creative journey. Very few creators are there who go ahead without bothering too much what others have to say about their creations. They know value of their creations.
Being ordinary people, its not completely wrong either. When one does something then s/he needs appreciation for his/her doing. Problem starts when one starts insisting that s/he is the best and this claim is so awkward, especially in the fields of arts.
Almost we all know the old story where two artists (sculptors) go to a king and request him to decide who is a better artist between two of them. King says that he can decide only after seeing their performances…………
After 30 days king reaches there and one artist unveils his creation and King is astonished to see such a wonderful creation. King says he has not seen such a beautiful carvings before and he feels that first artist should be better than the second as its hard to believe that one can make a better carving than this one.
When second artist removes curtain from his creation then king gets shock because second artist also has made same carvings on the rock. There is no difference between the two creations. He shows astonishment and asks second artist that when he was not in a position to see what first artist was creating then how come he ended up making similar things.
Second artist smiles and says that he has not made replica of first artist’s creation rather he has turned his rock in to a mirror and in reality king is watching the mirror image of creation of first artist.
King is very happy on seeing such wonderful artists and he says that they both are equally talented and nobody can decide who is best between two of them. They both share top position. They both are number one.
–
Above mentioned story may be just a parable but moral of the story is a strong one. It may be ugly to compare between two wonderful creations. One can’t compare between two natural beauties and so many times this logic is true in case of man made creations also.
One can’t say that Bhedaghat’s moon light scenarios are better than the sun rise in Darjeeling. Both are beautiful and have their own significance.
How a sane mind can decide which film out of Dosti, Sangam and Guide has better music than rest of the two? There can not be any first second or third in such selections.
Which wisdom may decide that who acted better than others in the roles of Jai, Veeru, Gabbar and Thakur in Sholay. Who did not give one of his best performances there?
Dilip Kumar in Devdas is better than Balraj Sahni in Do Beegha Zameen? Or even between Devdas and Mughl-i-Azam, who will decide where Dilip Kumar was better? He gave astonishing performances in both the roles so if both films are released in same year, then how to decide? Comparison is possible within the proper context only.
We can’t do anything if Zanzeer, Deewar, Sholay etc or even Jeetendra and Shashi Kapoor’s films of 70s got more commercial success than Ankur, Bhumika, Nishant, Junoon etc but a civilized society may appreciate in same breath a Amitabh Bachchan in Zanzeer, Deewar and Sholay etc and Vinod Khanna in Mere Apne, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Shaq, Achanak etc and Dharmendra in Anupama, Satyakam, Chupke Chupke etc and Sanjeev Kumar in Koshish, Aandhi, Mausam etc and Naseeruddin Shah in Nishant, Sparsh, Paar and Mandi etc and Om Puri in Ardha Satya, Aakrosh, Mirch Masala etc.
This is not justified to give best actor award to Amitabh Bachchan only for Agneepath and ignore Pankaj Kapoor for Ek Doctor Ki Maut. Both deserve first grade recognition. Let them share it. Two good artists will be having hearts of two good human beings also. Commercial success is already an award got from masses at BO. Awards should be like awards given for R&D activities. Good efforts which are helping in enhancing the craft of film making should be awarded.
Let an actor of hugely commercial successful film give an award to another actor who gave wonderful performance but film did not get commercial success. Why making commercial aspect of film making the supreme aspect ignoring all other areas, which actually bring quality in the craft of film making.
If its too difficult to digest then let 2-3 actors share best actor category award.
Was it too difficult to call both SRK and Aamir Khan on stage and give both the award in best actor category for their performances in DDLJ and Rangeela respectively?
Best supporting actor category award could not be shared between Salman Khan (KKHH) and Manoj Bajpai (Satya)?
People gave award only to SRK and did injustice towards Aamir. Same injustice was done to Manoj Bajpai and for which reason? Simple stupid stubborn thinking that only one can be at the top!
Even in cricket like game few matches have ended in tie. Why tie can’t happen so often in arts and particularly in cinema?
The major motive behind an award is to appreciate good performances and motivate good performers then how they (awards) should be used to demoralize equally competent nominees?
Anyway not all are benevolent and moralistic like Pran Saab (PFC POST) , who pointed towards better performances and refused to accept award given to him and his film in protest.
Is not it good to see Amitabh Bachchan inviting Sanjay Dutt on stage to share award with him. ( video )
Awards ceremonies should be like R&D meets where good and strong points are pointed out and hence quality control comes in the films through these appreciation and valid criticism.

Can we try to recognise and appreciate good performances done by many actors in 2007. Everybody can have his/her own list. There can be level of performances but good efforts should be appreciated wven if they are appreciated within the boundaries of the levels. We can consider, did actor grow in his/her acting while doing a role. Did he do something different which s/he had not done before? Could he bring something extra and something deeper through his/her performance? Did a director select a good subject and then could he live up to that subject?
How films reached to me as an audience and people may have different opinion but idea is to appreciate good things done within their context. People with adequete knowledge of technical fields like cinematography etc may certainly have different opinion or team associated with films can have different opinion based on their personal experience that we the audience dont know how difficult it was to take that shot or how this particular camera work should be appreciated. Following is having limitations of an audience. We the audience dont know behind the scenes story and we have to be dependent on the final product coming to us.

[I] Condemnation towards non-sense liberty
(1) Sagar Belary – Bheja Fry, very stupid act of commenting on Ravindra Jain.
(2) Farah Khan - Om Shanti Om, went over board by dragging joke on Manoj Kumar, beyond a civilized limit.
————————————-
[J] Lack of connection with audience
(1) No Smoking, (neither in content nor in treatment, audiences were considered)
(2) Saawaria, (self indulgent treatment, which may not be required by content)
(3) Khoya Khoya Chand, self made understanding of that era was imposed on audiences hence film looked less real and more parody of past period shown in film.
—————————-
P.S- (1) Just few categories are covered and many technical areas and music, singing etc can be covered. Trial is to have an idea, what people think about awards in general.
(2) Have not seen all the films released in 2007 so many performances might have been left and people may include their choice which they think can be included , within the right context.
(3) Such analysis can give us opportunity to see our own logic, why we are liking some performances or why we are giving preference to some performances.

Recent Posts:

:d/ I agree..it is a bit unfair to have only one person ‘win’ in a category..
at times there are more than one deserving candidate and at other times none…
bang on target Rk…this is the best post(oops!) one of the best posts on pfc
p.s i think Nitin neil mukesh shud have been included in the debut actors list..wat say..?
@H.G,
Not only in second half, but right from the first scene where Deepak Dobriyal is befooling him and PK is enjoying commentary in english with no clue whats going on. He has lifted the acting level by this performance. Many scenes are never seen in Hindi films. Its not easy for a matured actor to work with kids and they mostly behave over the top and look odd among kids. Here PK does differently. Just a scene- PK has kept Binoculars of the boy and Biniya is standing before him on other side of counter of his shop. And he does not say a word. He lifts his eye brows and make silent communication with her. Thats done in such a controlled manner that it says all without uttering a single word.

I have already mentioned many other points about him in
http://passionforcinema.com/the-blue-umbrella-hindi-cinema-should-feel-rejuvenated-with-most-lovable-thief-of-all-times/
—
and there are many posts on PFC revealing some thing positive about his performance in TBU
@Jabina,
True. Thats why people get disappointment when buys DVDs of old films on the basis of point that this film or this actor for this film had got this and that award and they dont find that film and performance up to the mark where one can get such high appreciation.
and then there are situations where people shows astonishment that ” What this performance or film did not get award in best category?”.
Chapters of cinema history are filled with such records and this faulty procedure is going on and on.
Humanity should progress in every area. when films have progressed technically then why not these awards systems get revamping?
@Ashwin,
Thanks for comment.
ya PFC’s archive is filled with many valuable posts. Every other day someone makes a post which can’t have any match elsewhere on net.

Neil could have been mentioned but I did not include performances which i find less than 70% level.
He missed the bus through this performance. Though Director is more culprit for this.
Neil gives impression throughout the film that he knows whats going to happen unlike other actors. He misses the thrilling moment of the film and does not carry suitable expressions either on face or through eyes. This can be a harm of having a bounded script in the very begining for a new actor when one cant make a difference between different restive points on a journey.
He made a debut and people noticed him but it was not an impressive one. He has got looks, camera presence and people have noticed him but more deeper efforts are required from his sides.
This is just my personal observation. Many might have found him above avergae or impressive in Johny Gaddar. He had got a chance as story was in his favour and he was surrounded with actors of different acting school and calibre and he could have just responded them differently but he remains same all through the film. There was no ups and downs in his performances acoording to ups and downs faced by his character.:(
The actor Nikhil who made debut in My name is Gonzalves, has less shortcomings. He has performed better. But he has debuted in 2008. so next year.

RK, as always a well researched post:)
Perfomances remain etched in our memories forever.
Awards are just statistics, sometimes they are rewards - lots of people here would share this view;)
@Arun,
thanks for comment. True Awards are just statistics but timely appreciation of good performances may give a boost to performers who need outside support at some point of their career specially when they are new or when they are at some threshold limit.
Those times have passed when actors used to help each other in same film so that they perform better and whole film’s level is increased.
But who knows, if few stars start thinking that wow if by sharing award at stage can bring them so much popularity then what harm its for us to act a bit while at stage;) and a trend is started. and everybody repeats endlessly its one big family
These pvt awards will work like this only but National awards may have some reforms:)
there has to be a winner.. even you have
statedacknowledged a winner..“Vo sikandar hi doston kehlaata hai
Haari baazi ko jeetna jise aata hai
Niklenge maidan mein jis din hum jhoomke
Dharti dolegi ye kadam choomke”
RK: Lovely premise and awesome grading of performances. While you might tell me that my mind is analytical, yours is actually scientific!! I wish your trial included music as well.
@HG,
for recognition/award I have voted on your chosen list.
Not always one can have that kind of performance as we find in case of Pankaj Kapoor in TBU. so its looking obvious.
In all other cases it always can be a close situation and its a trial to cover that situation.
Other actors have got award while PK has not even been mentioned though fact remains hardly any living actor could compete with PK in that role.
Its coincidence that he is quite clearly above than the rest of the actors.
But if we exclude PK in TBU and come to 80% level then can we select one clear winner?
thats the motive behind this whole excercise.:)
@Subrat,
Thanks for comment.
Its already long post and hence I had to stop me in covering areas like Story/content/subject/dialogues
Music
and Lyrics.
and I got supportive second thought that someone might come with list of these areas.
and then there are other areas, where those who know can include the list, like Back ground music and sound and very important area of Editing is there.
RK: first of all, I absolutely loved your reference to Bhedagat.
Ties do happen in the field of arts and cinema, although rarely. A few examples:
- Barbara Striesland and Katherine Hepburne shared the Oscar for best actress in 1968
- Dimple Kapadia & Jaya Bhaduri Filmfare best actress 1974
- Anupam Kher and Satish Kaushik Filmfare best comedian 1990
- Mamootty & Ajay Devgan Best Actor National Award 1990
- Suresh Gopi & Balachandra Menon Best Actor National Award 1989
- Indrani Haldar & Rituparno Ghosh Best Actress National Award 1998
- Tabu & Shobana Best Actress National Award 2002
That said, I wouldn’t comment whether these were the right ties where it was difficult to judge one performance as better than the other…
However, I disagree with your approach of categorizing performances on a rating scale (x/100) and then saying it is difficult to judge one over the other. For the sake of argument, I could further break-up, say > 80 category and give points like 81, 82….
My point is, it is sometimes really difficult to say one performance is better than the others, but if one goes into the nitty gritties one can still do a relative grading.
But I totally agree with your comment that “Good efforts which are helping in enhancing the craft of film making should be awarded”….but the question is, who decides that?
sorry i meant Rituparna Sengupta above.
Hey, thanks for including Lara Dutta in your list…perhaps the most natural performance of the year, gone unnoticed. Gr8 analysis but AB in Nishabd definitely deserves level>=90.
How can two entirely different emotional arcs,character arcs be judged on the same scale?
How can a nicely underplayed character with a few genuinely affecting moments stand up to a portrayal spanning a lifetime that saves the film from miring into mediocrity thanks to an electric on screen presence?
How can two different genres of music be judged on the same scale?

[Aside]-I am surprised to see Ranbir Kapoor,Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone>70/100..This is a joke!! Ranbir was quite obviously directed in a manner to ‘overplay’ his character.His performance by a ‘normal’ barometer would easily classify as bizzare.While,assured he failed to suggest enough gravitas to convince in the key emotional moments anyways.Sonam was grinning clueless half the time,and Deepika Padukone is the biggest joke ever.A presence so passive on screen with a terrible terrible voice,I mean come on she couldnt even play a bimbette well.
_______________________________________
You’ve got to be kidding me
Raima Sen MSFU,Ranvir Shorey Bheja Fry,Farah Khan Om Shanti Om,Anurag Kashyap No Smoking,Akshaye Khanna Gandhi My Father,Mithun Chakraborty Guru??
How can these find a place in this list is beyond me./:)
@French…this should be looked as a personal preference list, so what worked for RK did not work for you and vice versa. No big deal.
Aditya I know that.I was terribly surprised at these inclusions,hence the post..
Anyways to paraphrase Rakeysh “I cannot make an unwatchable film but I will mess it up” Mehra
“Art has no numbers,only races do”
I am totally against any sort of rating(1,2,3…) of actors/films or whatever.
Why bother?Isnt it just enough that we can appreciate art as an art form?
@ Rk …
i havent seen saanwariya so i wont comment on ranbir and sonam….but do u consider wat deepika did in om shanti om above 70….?
I would like to include Manish Tiwary and Dil, Dosti Etc. in the List.In his first film, Manish does brilliant job. Also, Shreyas+Imaduddin = FANTASTIC!!
The worst injustice EVER was to give Anil Kapoor the best actor award for his over the top performance in “Beta” and ignoring Aamir’s mindblowing performance in “Jo jeeta Wohi Sikander”.Good that Aamir does not attend award functions after that.
RK saab, this is a better list than any awards this year. I was surprised not to see Neil Mukesh in best debut category, but after reading your post on his performance in JG, I kinda agree with you. What about Manish Tiwary for Dil, Dosti, etc.,? I would love to read your explanation. And, I totally agree with you on Pankaj Kapur.
Hi RK….wow man……this is easily one of the best posts I have read on PFC….and following your style of rankings this post is >= 90
well apart from the well researched analysis you have done in your post, I liked that you have brought up the most important fact any field and it’s artists should understand……ego satisfaction may feel good in short term…but it’s your genuine interest and contribution that matters in long run…(as they say..everyone is dead in long run :))
Especially Indian cinema seems to be hit by this factor the most. As you pointed out there are some real gems in Indian cinema like
Actors: PK, Naseerudin Shah, KK (his talent has been grossly underused), Raghuvir Yadav, Rajit Kapoor and may others
Directors: Gulzar, Shyam Benegal, Sudhir Mishra (how can he not be recognized for HKA), Vishal Bhardwaj
I am leaving many other categories, but the point is that these guys strive for the better cinema…but since they don’t know how to butter people, how to satisfy other’s egos, they go unnoticed….and subsequently run out of producers (baap bada na bahiya sabse bada rupaiya). Then sometimes they have to succumb to these conditions and do whatever they get.
This whole cycle is so frustrating for me to see, I can just wonder how frustrating it will be for them.
Well adding some of my favorites here who deserve much more recognition than they have got:
Actors: KK, Naseer, Rajit Kapoor, PK, Raghuvir Yadav, Vinay Pathak, Ranveer Shorey, Aditya Srivastava, Irrfan khan, Tabu
Directors: Gulzar, Shyam Benegal, Vishal, Sudhir Mishra
I am sure there are many more I have missed…pardon me for that.
Again…GREAT post, GREATTTTTTTT POINT !!!
Missed Irrfan Khan in Namesake in your personal preference list RK
The only award that should have had no disputes this year has to be Pankaj Kapur for TBU. It was the best portrayal of a character that I have witnessed in recent times.
this was a wonderful post and an absolute delight to read.
RK - did you delibrately miss Om Shanti Om - in Lack of connection with audience ?
I did not get the feel of the 70’s or any kind of tribute at all.
@Aditya (13)
(1) Yes sometimes there have been ties in past but they should happen often rather most of the time. If tie was there between SRK’s DDLJ and Aamir’s Rangeela act then perhaps things should have happened differently. same is with AB and PK’s case. PK’s recognition might have given proper fuel to that kind of cinema at that time when it was required. Same is case with Manoj Bajpai.It was kind of first big role for him, (except few small roles which he done in past)and it does not happen often when a supporting actor totally eclipse all the other actors in the film. Manoj Bajpai was an event which should have been recognised. Not to mention that Salman’s career does not get any effect whether he gets awards or not, his stardom is above these things.
(2) yes there is scope and danger of contradictory things and everything needs improvement. Its 3rd-4th ball of a over. 5th-6th, next year(given - if PFC exists and/or I am active). I had a preconcieved notion that things will not be seen as I am trying to describe.
(3) Comparison between WONDERFUL CREATIONS is odd.
You know very well that we all have some sense, instinct through which we get to know whats wonderful and whats not. Once a thing enters in that category of wonderful then it takes an independent existence and is not comparable to others.
(4) (perhaps) Few things are not possible with usual award system and here PFC like forums can be helpful and those critics who write blogs where they dont have professional attachment as they can freely analyse the performances so that performers get unbiased views and may improve if they find any truth in such views and they are open in recieving good things from outside.
—
rest in next for the ease of writing and reading
@Aditya (13) contd…
(5) Perhaps Judges who decide awards also follow some procedure but their report cards are position based and not divison based and this procedure does not help performers, except lucky ones who get the awards.
————-
Now imagine, an award ceremony is happening and rather than to waste time in showing dance, and saying silly jokes [all the time they are busy in shooting of songs and dances so whats the need for actors to perform and that too successful actors? either newcomers are given chance to perform or its a useless activity], people who are understood as knowledgeable in the different fields of cine making, throw light on different good aspects of films chosen in that year. Knowers who have got age now and not so much active in film making but have full experience.
and knowers of different schools of film making. If a Director like Govind Nihalani who is DOP also, comes and throws light on cinematography then nominees and winners and watchers all will be benefited. Then award functions will be used to enhance the quality of the craft of film making.Why one scored above others should be told.
Seldom filmmakers gather at single place, except parties. a knower will tell that in Nishabd camera work is good when outdoor locations are shown but were they so much needed to move ahead the story? Thats why it loses before other better work say TBU or NS.
same is true in every area. and
not to mention that ACTIVE people in some area seldom appreciate new and talented people.
Because their own market, place will be in danger. Thats why Judges should be selected very carefully. A panel of active journalists of Delhi will not select a new and young Journalist of Delhi, as he knows the place and may have aquaintance with people and may progress fast. They will select a person of other state, who cant speak local language and cant produce danger to them. Local will be selected only when terms are dictated to Judges because localite has influential connections. Then Judges are helpless.
Most of the people have cost.
@Satya (15),
I am repeating it AB has developed a skill where his level seldom goes below 70-80% but then he is not getting kind of roles where he can lift this level to cross the bounadry of 90%.
—
Re: Nishabd,
when camera was not busy in catching outdoor beauty then it was exploring legs and different body parts of young actress, where RGV gave time AB so that he could cross boundary of 80% leave alone 90%?
—
RGV’s association has harmed a lot AB as an actor. Though at same time association with RGV has helped Abhishek to grow as an actor (Naach and Sarkar).
AB may feel differently but as an audience watching his films since early childhood, RGV is not for him. RGV is simply dragging him down from his level. RGV can not work with matured and established actors who already have done so many things. He is not meant for this task. RGV was good if he was present in 1971-73 when AB was struggling but now he is of no use. This association should be finished unless RGV searches good script for AB. Aamir is much professional actor than AB thats why he did not work with RGV after Rangeela and perhaps he will not work. Then it was helpful for him to grow.
RGV can help an actor who has potential but not getting proper outlet, like he used Ajay Devgan in Company and helped him to grow in that new area. RGV will be useless for a Dilip Kumar because he has no script where an actor could further grow. His script sense has a limit. But same is true with everyone.
Its simply a mis matching relation irrespective of RGV’s saying that he is one of the biggest fan of AB. A fan may not have that bigger vision which is required to utilize properly an actor of Amitabh’s calibre.
Though its also true that majority of directors of films of AB which he has done in last 5-6 years fall in same category. they dont have visionary scripts to use him properly.
@French (16)
Time for teasing !!!:)
When you cant see Mithun Chakrtavorty in Guru which is the simplest and visible entry then you are simply wasting your time in films. You are not meant to be a cinema fan. Its just a time pass activity for you with little dose of real understanding;)
—-
Never mind will come back to you after some time to cover in detail.
@French(18)
Are you too much influenced by style of Vivek”PFC author who is making his debut film as writer and producer”Kumar.?;) He writes such statements as you have quoted for Rakeysh” who also changed an alphabet”Mehra:)
@Ashwin (19),
Deepika had to play a model kind of person. Lacking is there in her characterization not in her portryal. Thats Farah Khan’s lacking but when she had SRK 18 hours at her studio and in 85 scenes/100 scenes then why she would bother about other characters?;)
Character is week but once assigned she passes it successfully. Unless one gets good character and screen time its difficult to say oracles.
@32 (20),

which level you see Manish Tiwari and his film Dil Dosti etc?
Shreyas and Immamuddin Shah -I se them in 60% category.
Film as such does not enter in usual category but considering it as first film of Manish, and perhaps he deliberately has made it like this, it may enter in 60% level in different/ly category.
just my personal seeing. I found many lackings in the film in all the areas.
its also possible that I missed something and could not get fine things present in the film. which you may point out.
@Anindya(21),
Aamir has proved that actors dont need to be in cut throat competition and manoeuvring to arrange for awards to run their career. He is as hot star without winning or accepting an award as his other contemporaries who have been winning it years after years. Same energy can be utilized in improvement in performances.
—————–
I have less idea about awards. I have been always busy in watching films and not watching awards or reading about awards. Once in a while If something comes before eyes then its different. These statistical data have appeared more before me after PFC’s birth.
@Vivek H(22),
Have created a category of 60% where Neil is present:)
Re: Dil Dosti etc- Did not find it convincing. It gives impression of made differently hence at 60% level in that different category but over all it did not impress me.
Though film deals with realistic kind of subject but realistic touch is lost. Amateur is not realistic. Raw deals can be accepted but only in some portion of film, as it was the case with Raakh of Aamir Khan. Characterization, performance everything grows after sometime but here in Dil Dosti etc same awkwardness prevails all through the film.
Characters look like belonging to different generations but living in same campus at same time or in same locality.
Biggest lacking is experienced actors like Smriti Mishra has given such a weak performance. First she did not suit the character.
Or we can say story lacks here. Immauddin’s affection towards her is very false. There is no logic or convincing angle there. And camera does not not care that if she cant look even ordinary then she must not look atleast bad.
There is no voice control in case of Immamuddin, she has maintained same slow delivery all through the film no matter he is enjoying the phase or passing through a tension. This cool dudeship has no basis. He looks tired who cant speak.
In short characterization is weak. Story is weak. screen play is weak.
Film got a chance to be made and did not succumb to loses and producer earned. Thats a reward. This is also not so less importance that Manish got a chance to make a film and he made it. Improvements- they are always desired for everybody. so he does not disappoint and who knows how much greater level he touches in his second film. because pressure is too much in first film and one is not aware of all the things so weakness may occur in first attempt. we must wait for his second film.
@Sandeep (23),
Thanks for your comment. and I am agree on every point you have made.
This is true Raghuveer Yaday most of the time has been avoided by critics, media and those who decide.
He got award in Massey Saab. He always had a big potential. He was so good recetnly in M F Hussain’s Meenakshi. and earlier he has given very good performances in many films like. He has not been utilized properly.
“When you cant see Mithun Chakrtavorty in Guru which is the simplest and visible entry then you are simply wasting your time in films. You are not meant to be a cinema fan. Its just a time pass activity for you with little dose of real understanding”
Well thanks for the information.But quite frankly all Mani Ratnam did was tone down someone who is usually over the top(it suits those films,though) and get an effective performance out of him minus any kind of nuance.He was decent,but there were loads of better performances..
And if enjoying was the deal..why did you not mention Sudhir for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom?
So you watch films for timepass too?
@Gaurav(24),
Hope I may satisfy you. Once an actor has agreed to do a character then he will be judged on the basis of that performance in that film. It does not matter then how good Irfan/Irrfan was in Haasil etc.
—
Its Director’s shortcoming also that she could take out a wonderful performance from Tabu but she got satisfaction from an just above the average performance from Irrfan in same film.
—-
Did you ever feel in the film Irrfan is not simply an indian immigrant but a Professor at one of the world’s best universities?
It was not hard task for either Mira Nair or Irrfan to follow a realistic attitude. Tabu was a house lady. She managed it very well.
But Irrfan was unable to cary body langauge, manerisms. He looked more like a bengali tired man working in municipality in Culcutta.
—
He Was Prof. of computers or quantum physics or something like that. Such immigrants cant always be with troubled personaility. They have a sense of achievement also in their attitude because of on going journey where professional success come on regular basis because set up is like that.
—
Irrfan was far away from that body language. See him when he leaves room of Kal Penn, saying ” As you wish”. have we ever seen anybody saying in such a manner which is like somebody is under sedatives and under that impact talking in air.
Ashok Ganguli in Novel is bit different.
—
Inspite of hard work and full effort he missed because he could not follow a model suitable for this character. Not always one can use his imagination.
—
One scene where he excelled and its one of the best scenes of the film where he calls Tabu from hospital situated in another city. In that small scene he gives clue why he is treated as one of the great actors. Because here he was in sync with the character. He was sick, alone, hopeless and fearing and here all professional things dont come in to the picture.
Only in one scene he beats everyone present in the film. But then just for one scene, one cant be in 80 or 90% level. hence 70%
hmmmmmm.:)
@KCP (25),
This 70s kind of feelings, is marketted by Farah Khan with her every film. Nobody can market his/her film like films of 80s;)
70s is the safe era.60s is too old and 80s is too bad. 90s stars are still active so only 70s remains there to be claimed.
—-
70s is not that bygone era because many hit films are still seen on regular basis and that may be the reason people did not feel any offence if SRK and FK could not replicate it exactly. Moreover they were always trying to make a parody kind of film, while KKC was claimed as true portral of that era with real feelings while Rajat Kapur etc were misrably failed to portray actors of that era. 70s is not taken as too old era or too different era. Half of film going audience might have taken birth in 70s.
@Suchita (38)
which song has this prelude?:-?:)
@French (36),
May be for you (whatever you are saiyng abt Mithun in Guru). Not for me.
and when you care to comment please spend 2 more minutes to write your list of good performances so that readers also know whats hidden behind your thoughts.
I dont recall ever enjoying Sudhir except Satte Pe Satta. so it was neither joy or sadness seeing him in JBJ.

@KCP(46),
May be thats was KK’s method of coming in to SUR.
Close eyes and Hmm and then enters in to right sur taal.:)
RK@50 .. Sur nahin…feelings kaho …gaane mein jaan daal dena….
Sur to KK apne jeb mein rakh ke ghoomte the ^:)^
ya, right, enetry in right mind set.
Gana na aya bajana na aya
dilber kop apna banana na aya…
that too with so much Sur:)
RK @28
hmmm…some how I get this impresion that we judge Mr.Bachchan’s performance on different criterion…Isn’t it that we expect a lot more from him than what we expect from others? Anyways…and sorry for using “we” as I know that there are many who would not buy my opinion.
@kcp…gr8 list…here are my favs I missed out on your list,
Pyar kar liya to kya pyar hai khataa nahi(Kabhie KAbhie)
Jab Dard nahi thaa seene main and mere dil ne tadap ke(anurodh?)
Badi sooni sooni hai(Mili)
Khud pe itraate hue pyar barsaate hue chandani raat mein ek baar tujhe dekha hai(Dil-e-nada)
Raah pe rehte hai(NAmkeen)
Nazraana bheja kisi ne pyaar ka
Mere hosh le lo deewana banaa do (Bandish)
Jaane kya soch kar nahi guzraa(Kinara)
Is mod se jaate hai and so on…the list is unending:)
Satya@54. nice songs but none of them meets my criterion ( only humming at the start of the song - before the actual mukhda starts )
1) Starts with a “Hoye” ( not humming…if you consider H Ha Hi Hii Hu Huu He Hai Ho How Ham H: - then Kishore has a huge number of them at the beginning. Let us catch only the humming ones, which go like hhmmmmmmm)
( like many other examples )
negative
2) Negative. No cue at all to come into sur
3) Directly starts ( almost without a cue )
4) negative
5) Cannot recollect this song. The solo of Kishore in this movie shows that even Khayyaam saab can give atrocious music.
6) Starts with a “Ho” ( not humming )
7) negative
9) Directly starts ( almost without a cue )
10) negative
However I agree that the list of mine is incomplete. I see the number would increase by atleast 2.5 times. These days I am in the mood of not doing kkexcercise on time :-t#-o
@kcp
Sorry my mistake…i completely missed the ‘humming’ cue. Sorry once again.
Your King wali story reminded me of a story I had in school. It was about these two theatre actors(french? comedians? don’t remember!) who fall in love with same woman and somehow get into a competetion to prove who is a better actor. Interesting story with a great end, as far as I remember.
Anyway, nice and interesting post though I do not agree with a few things here and there but that’s fine
but ‘few girls of CDI team’? which ones? Don’t you think they deserve to be named?
Reference to good debut performances makes more sense here because this is for appreciation and encouragement.
An award should be given for excellence in cinema and not because you are a pretty face or you are good for a newcomer.
@Satya (53),
An actor of Amitabh Bachchan’s calibre has to be always judged with high expectations only. There should not be any dilution there. He gets high level of love and respect and admiration from audiences and hence they always have to see him doing best.
Such actors cant be allowed to act ordinary. They dont have this liberty. Their whole reputation depends on doing different and best.
Whenever they forget this path, they have to be criticised. this criticism is also part of Love of audiences towards them. Its sensitivity of an actor if s/he feels this attachment of audiences towards her/him.
and its useless to point out that very few artists get this status. Its special status and one should enjoy it.
@KCP (46,54),
Nice to see your list coming out of your knowledge pool focussed on KK’s music world. Thanks for your rich presence and contribution.
@Neerja (57),
To express disagreement and extended views are the reasons behind a space for comments. Many people knowing different things about something contribute and perhaps all contribuetrs get to know more and a chance to refine their own views.:)
Those are the best and fortunate posts where many feel to write their own views and make discussion live.
sathi haath badhana….. ek akela thak jayega mil kar bojh uthana…
such collective efforts are responsible to make something significant. Individuals visions are often (mostly) pygmies.

@Neerja,
Re CDI-
I just followed the policy of film. an integrated approach and did not diffrentiate among girls/women of filmi hockey team;)
Kabir Khan is shown to propagate this policy so I also followed it in honour of message of film.
–
It was 85% Kabir Khan or say SRK’s film. He is there in focus in almost all the scenes. His team wins in the end. When focus of film is not on any of the girl/woman, then how as an audience I can do that. Then players belong to different states and film has stressed on this factor so if I select 2-3 then they will automatically be seen as players of that state.:)
When film has maintained a status where they are not given much visible faces, let us also follow the same.
and you or anyone always can say her/his choice among those actresses/female actors:)
Haven’t really got the point of this whole long- though well intended- post. And Dwij Yadav- [-(
Awards = tick mark onjective questions , yes or no type ?
analysis = details about plus points of a performance or where improvements are needed to go in to upper level ?
this is idea behind levels.. is nt it? grade system:d
Sure PFC, RT… and all other portals yahoo, msn, rediff etc can do good here…
concept may help actors
:)>-
There shd b a separate categary for comedy roles.
For supporting small roles in comedy-
in 80% level - RAJENDRA GUPTA in APNE,
first time in comedy and did so good
He was good in small supporting role in Guru also
may be in 70% level
Sachin Khedekar was 80% in Guru.
Madhwan in Guru - 70% in supporting categary
and what about negative role categary?
Amitabh Bachchan in RGV ki Aag - 80%
Kulbhushan kharbanda in Manorama - 80%
in supporting class.
Govind Namdev in Johnny Gaddar - 80%
and in supporting actress
girl in Cheni Kum - 70%
Konkana in Laga chunri mein daag - 70%
=(27), is it feasible? on large scale???
=(28), though agree Big B was not in his fine form in sarkar.., nishabd,….
or RGV could not make present him in his best form but Big B was very good in one of the scray stories of DZH where he played a professor
i was scaed by big b’s real act only in this film8-x
condemnation should be for those films also…, which were copied from other films without giving credits to original….x(
@Jahan Bakshi (62),
Nothing unusual, even I am not getting any point from your small comment to start a response.
I am clueless. and I cant know your intention from such a comment.
Dwij Yadav? what about him?:-?
If you intend to say that you did not find him worthy, I have no problem. Thats your take.:)>-
@krishn(63,64)
ya net based portals and reviewers using blogs can do a good work in this field.
May be somewhere it educates viewers also. why one is voting someone, within which criteria his chosen performance is justified. May not be initially but after few attempts, almost everybody giving vote will come out of Fan’s shield and will use a analytical decision. When there is no harm then it may bring benefits.
@Krishn(65),
Perhaps not on larger scale. But if see it as a quality control device used by a corporate producer having several films made in one year. It can be very helpful. Will write more in a nonfilmi post soon.
Thanks for catching
@Krishn(66),
AB, RGV, DZH case simply support my saying. Small and different role which AB had not done before and RGV could extract good performance from AB. RGV needs a proper script to justify him directing AB. If he as a director does not grow even after working with AB then he is not a progressive director. a director’s imagination can be on cloud nine when he gets an actor of AB’s calibre through which he can say many different stories because he has an actor who can accomplish the task before the camera.
For average work, he has crowd of actors.
