Freedom ..terrorism …cynicism … I thought my jokes were bad …..

The past few days vaguely reminded me of how joker holds Gotham city at ransom in the dark knight.
The past few days have also reminded me of Ardhasatya.

The past few days i have been noticing people getting angry at the attack in mumbai. I’ve noticed the infiltration of security in a city like mumbai - the dreamland, the ’sitaron ka shaher’, the posh Taj hotel, nariman house, the place where the terror attack happened.

Similar protests were heard during 7/11, when the Jessica lal case happened, the ‘93 blasts (obviously I wasn’t aware about it then), when gujrat riots happened and were blamed to “NEWTON’S THIRD LAW - EVERY ACTION HAS AN EQUAL AND OPPPOSITE REACTION”, when the parliament was attacked in dec 13, when the ‘eve teasers’ in delhi did it again, and the woman who came upto the victim’s defense was brutally injured.

I remember being cynical when I heard the voices of protests …. I’m a cynical guy ….

Srilanka has been burning since ages wrt the tamil issue (I do not know in detail about it ..I confess …being a tamilian and having seen kanathil isn’t enough I agree). The north east has been plagued since ages due to government neglect. There has been a steady influx of north east indians (whom we very callously call Chinkys) into metros (mumbai and delhi) …so have the steady influx of ‘north indians’ (people from bihar, jharkhand, UP). We all are very aware of the problems that exist in the ‘north indian’ belt …(I’m not a ‘north indian’ nor a ‘chinky’). Delhi hasn’t been safe for women ever since the time my mother was born in delhi (at least 50 odd yrs) …

Kashmiri pandits have been wiped out literally (I’m not a kashmiri pandit either), god alone knows what atrocities army commits in kashmir on the residents/what atrocities terrorists commit on the locals/what atrocities are committed by whom on whom in kashmir. I would not know, may be I’m too lazy to find out, may be I’m too cynical. Atrocities are commited …thats enough for a cynical guy like me to be more cynical …

Why should we WAKE UP and DO PROTEST ? What difference will that make ? What is sooooooooooo important and sooooooooo radically different that happened now that we should wake up with a sudden realization that “such attacks should not happen”. We didnt WAKE up at LTTE/godhra/7-11/dec13/criminal nexus hara-kiri in north india/oppression in north east/bleeding kashmir. When the armed forces bodies were brutally tortured and returned to us in the most gory manner by our neighboring north eastern country ….
Why wake up now???

Because its mumbai ? Delhi ? The place where we the elite, the ones with the laptops and the Cafe Late from Cafe Coffee Day in hands …with the dial-20-min-deliverable-pizza available to us ? that place is disturbed ? is that why ?

With broadband net connection to download films online ….with Deoderants…. AC cabs …. kamasutra condoms … Dance bars …. multiplexes…. when all of it is suddenly under threat ? IS that why should we wake up NOW ?

Where the ‘metro-ness’ (if I may say so) has so numbed us that unless the hand that rocks the cradle (ie our cradle) is disturbed, we don’t wake up to reality ????

How selfish are we ???

Would this attack have had similar reactions if it was Srilanka/Tamil Nadu border/Kashmir/Nagaland/naxalite pierced sections of bihar ???

Let me be cynical again - NO

Well let me tell you this attack has already happened before. It’s all dejavu for me. It’s always been happening in the aforementioned areas. I remember smiling when the aforementioned incidents happened, and im smiling now too …

Don’t get me wrong. Contrary to what the girls I have met in my life might believe, I’m not a sadist.
I love mumbai. Some of the best moments of my life I have experienced here, but what are we going to do ?
Hold candles ? as usual murmur of protests …. as usual blogs ..as usual question politicians on ndtv the BIG FIGHT.

I remember VIVIDLY a scene from one of my fav films Ardhasatya, where they are having an arm chair discussion in Smita Patil’s hostel. Smita Patil is asked for her opinion. She very politely says that ‘there is no end to discussion. Discussion is fruitful only when you DO something about it’

The keyword is ‘DO’.

Agreed politicians are bad. Agreed USA security is much better. Agreed we cannot handle terrorism. Agreed ..agreed

Come on and lead the way …. come on and stand for elections ..come on and stand for IAS/IPS ….. come on and join the armed forces …come on ..come on …

“No I cannot ..I have my job to do.”

THEN SHUT THE FUCK UP AND DON’T TELL ME HOW FUCKED UP THE SITUATION IS ..I ALREADY KNOW !!!

Don’t tell me to light candles and protest, don’t tell me to hold peace processions, dont tell me to do anything.

You go ahead and CORRECT the fucking situation, if I’m inspired enough ..i will join you ….
Else
I will go ahead and correct the situation, if you are inspired enough, join me …

Don’t tell me to light candles. I’m sorry I won’t do that because that doesn’t solve the problem. That merely ‘points out’ where the problem is, that’s all it does …

Next time we air a thought. We should really ask ourselves. What the hell have I done to reduce the problem that I’m asking others to talk about it ? What have I done to solve it ?

What is sooooooooo NEW ?? Where were these critics and socially aware gentry when the aforementioned terror/horror incidents were happening? Not bothered because it was not mumbai/delhi …. So why bother now ? Because it is mumbai/delhi ?

Are north indians/tamils in LTTE crisis/north east/kashmiris not indians ? Are they not our brethen ? Not soldiers worthy of a BLOG SILENCE DAY ????

Then why now ? Because its rocked us ..US !!! Self indulgent cynical numbed ‘metro-ed’ US !!! so much so that unless something happens to US we don’t do anything

I don’t trust anyone to do anything. I don’t think anything good will come out of protests/blog silences/discussions anyway.

It didn’t come out the last few times did it ??
I’d LOVE to be proven WRONG ….

But I’m cynical ….
And Its all dejavu ….

And I thought my jokes were bad.

Since past few days whenever i visit my orkut or FB account i read some really outrageous reactions on tags like “Lets kill ‘em” or “enough is enough” or “hang afzal guru” and what not….this post in short sums up my feelings towards all these amateur and temporal upheaval of emotions which will disappear as soon as our media shuts the fuck up…so like u say karthik lets be cynical and forget about it when TV shuts down

  2. Sourav on November 29th, 2008 2:38 pm

Fuckin exactly my views..the elites have felt it this time..hence the resounding after effects…KK give it a week infact two weeks considering the magnitude and audacity of the attack..everything will be forgotten.I am fuckin sick of all this..it makes me more fatalistic and let things happen the way it is…candle light procession and all is just hog wash..it will be all forgotten..forgotten heroes..forgotten event…forgotten you and me.Call it cynicism but thats reality

  3. DeepBlueLotus on November 29th, 2008 3:26 pm

Finally someone hit the right note.
I can barely look myself in the mirror - because I dont “Do” anything.

Whats the point to posting a blog entry on how angry you are or why this is happening or what should be done. As if one of us is going to be able to articulate something that others don’t know or feel.

I guess the main point ends up being vent and then go back to business.

Sometimes I feel the lack of avenues to vent and bottling up these emotions is more likely to lead to action.

    Thanks for this one KK

world is HELL man when will this all STOP

    enough is enough already

we are living on this rock called EARTH we all share same planet, we all breath same air, we all eat food when we feel hungry , we all drink when we feel thirty , we all have two eyes, one heart and one brain. Yet why we fight, why we are cruel to each other????

  5. Neeraj Ghaywan on November 29th, 2008 8:08 pm

I am so in agreement with what you’ve written that your theme is now my status message.

  6. Rusted rick on November 29th, 2008 11:41 pm

Yes kk, your jokes suck :)
but your point is bang on, my thoughts to the very bottom.
i don’t know, why the boiling point of our blood is so limited, it burns when people say these things to our face but hell, we don’t do anything.
Ask me, we talk way, waaayy too much. every one of us, and most of the time its just gibberish. why cant we just shut the fuck up for a while and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT (see am still talking).
Yes offcourse all of us are going to say ” no we are not going to stand down this time, we are going to change things”, Exactly my words every time i did badly in my exams….but hey did it change my results the next time round? well you know the answer!
Unlike the way many people think, protests does help. even one person standing there and shouting their points helps. when the education quotas were implemented the entire student body of our country rose in protest….ok it didnt help in removing the quotas but it did make the government think. we need to go out their and demand our security!
on the other post by suparn, there is about 270 post views but only around 5-6 cared to reply to show their support or confirm that they will be there on 3rd.

I’m a cynic like u dear. We can’t take care of a girlfriend’s mood swings. So, where does the question of correcting the ills of the society arise from? We aren’t like those terrorists, who’re zealous enough to die for a cause (however weird it maybe). We are eunuchs, who wait for a RGV, Anurag Kashyap or a Mani Ratnam to make a film. So, we can tear it apart & be satisfied that we’re accomplishing the mission of our lives.

  9. kartik krishnan on November 30th, 2008 4:41 am

its a sad cynical state of affairs ….
Gattu - completly agree with you

  10. Sudhir Nair on November 30th, 2008 5:25 am

Agree with u whole heartedly KK, nothing’s ever gonna change here. I don’t think it’s cynicism, it’s just a plain fact.. all we’ll do is vent our frustrations through candles, write blogs and spew venom at the politicians.

What we should be doing is pray like hell that the next time theres an attack let us not be there in the line of fire..cos like it or not, there are going to be more attacks and we are still going to be under prepared..

For instance, there was a blog i wrote two years ago in the aftermath of the train blasts, and guess what..the things i wrote then remains unchanged even now..

sudhir -read it …that post is still relavent today

  12. Srinivas on November 30th, 2008 9:52 am

After reading your thoughts on the whole “post-terror attack protests/marches” etc. the only line that would best describe my present state of mind is the Joker’s memorable line (with my addition at the end) -

“I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just… try to live!”

  13. Smriti Vij. on November 30th, 2008 9:28 pm

well said KK. Don’t let go of the Jokes, though.

  14. Sarang on November 30th, 2008 10:28 pm

For all the talk on how ‘practical’ cynicism is and nothing is going to change… see what it has brought the country to… the change that has happned BECAUSE of the cynical attitude…. :)…
    Cheers!

  15. kartik krishnan on December 1st, 2008 1:17 am

    sarang - i disagree ….
people are always hopefuly by default. It’s only when one after another the ‘assault’ on their sensibilities happen that they become numbed, and eventually cynical

  16. Sarang on December 1st, 2008 1:30 am

    Karthik
repeated disappointment can cause cynicism.. but laziness can too… Cynicism is just another pretext for being plain old dumb and lazy and shirking away from responsibilities, acting intelligent, or being practical etc…

  17. kartik krishnan on December 1st, 2008 1:31 am

its too much of a pain to be dissappointed than an effort to be hopeful

  18. Sarang on December 1st, 2008 1:36 am

well… its relative on how you take it… :)… the opposite can very well be true and valid as much…

to put in a cheap one liner.. no pain no gain :D

  19. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 1st, 2008 1:45 am

BTW, off the track, how come one has not seen much words , from the self styled protector of Mumbai, Raj Thackeray, is it because not many of the dead were Marathi manoos, or because most of the NSG commandos were “outsiders”. Just wondering.

  20. aparna on December 1st, 2008 8:55 am

…. and then there is another question… or is there?

  21. ashwin on December 1st, 2008 9:53 am

    @ ratnakar….

you may hear a statement soon from him in the coming months that he did not politicise terror….

  22. vs on December 5th, 2008 6:42 am

well…i somehow disagree with what a few thins here..
    a. its not abt mumbai or delhi or someother place its abt people who lost their lives…mumbai is a media hub daz y it ws more sensationalized than let’s say kashmir or TN (m not a mumbaikar)

    b. what’s the harm in people coming out n speakin?? even u r doin the same here…its jst a way of expressin 1’s grief, lightin candles is jst another way. prayin 4 lost souls is no crime.

    c. as far as ‘DO’ing is concerned, how do u know no1 is doin anythin for the country?? temme will some1 really helpin the cause shout at the top of his voice 2 tell evry1 that he IS DOIN??

lstly, i really wanna know what kinda activity will “inspire u” and “solve the situation”?? i’m sorry but if u r demandin a sudden action from a commoner then i’d say even the terorrist took a step to solve THEIR situation.

i’m not pro-terrorism but i’m definitely anti-extremism, be it in any form!!!!
