Froze with a glimpse of Frozen

The beautifully etched first shot, the equisite black and white shades to it, the sheer sensuality and the stunning cinematography, is all you can capture of Frozen by the first few seconds of the glimpse of the movie. We have seen wallpapers, stills, behind the scene videos, but when it is wrapped into that four minute trailer, and the final look comes out, it is worth it, and the black and white colour makes it even more pleasing to the eye.
Frozen, a truly independent film in its sense by newbie Shivajee Chandrabhushan. Independent cinema is a term used in the west for filmmakers, who have no sense of attachment with the corporate world of cinema, do not rely on external finance, do not run behind producers, but do what they want, and how they like it. Frozen would truly be an example of Independent Indian cinema, and unlike many other self proclaimed films.
Directed by Shivajee Chandrabhushan
Danny Denzongpa
Yashpal Sharma
Raj Zutshi
Aamir Bashir
Yes even though I have not been privileged enough to watch Frozen now, and was probably too young when it came to Delhi, Frozen has been a film which has been highly acclaimed with more than 19 awards at around 30 film festivals around the globe, and the other day when I caught Siddharth The Prisoner at the theatre, another film which was applauded at Osian Cinefan’s Delhi, I felt the urge to watch many more of such films, films which are made for a open minded audience, and are put off in a so called ‘intellectual’ audience, or made just for the festivals. The intriguing sense of feeling that the trailer leaves with you is something which stays with you for long, leaves an unforgettable effect.

Even though the trailer is a tad long, going upto four minutes, longer from its usual two minutes, it doesn’t cease to amaze you, and every moment captured during those four minutes appear as sheer magic. From the reflection of Danny Dengzongpa in the mirror, to the desperate sigh as the background score, to a young na'¯ve girl running between the woods being chased, to Danny’s expressions while turning the wheel, and the best part is you can still feel the now-non existant sigh behind, to the lilting background score starting to play, showing hints of positivity and playfullness, and the girl looking ever so beautiful without the cap, to the shots of ice hockey being played, to the evocative expressions of the young child, to the random shots of barren tree, or the tired dog, and finally Yashpal Sharma belting out some dialogues, and all this in black and white, and for me, that’s the best part. They all leave an everlasting impact on you, and oh you can hear the sigh. It did not need your zany background music, the simple sighs and the astonishing silence made up for all that, maybe made it much more worthy.
My cousin passing by, just saw me watching the trailer the millionth time, and as soon as he came to the screen, he asked me whether this was Kurosawa’s Rashomon, I told him
“You could always borrow that, its always going to be a legend, now watch something that could be the next Indian legend”
He wasn’t sure had I gone mad, but a black and white film, no Malaika Arora dancing around poles, no unnecessary songs, Frozen is a movie shot at around 12,000 feet above sea level in the month of January and is a film that depicts the life of a family whose dream like existence is interrupted by inevitable odds, one after the other.
Finally, Frozen is not a film that deserves to be bound by the four corners of a film festival, but is a film that everyone needs to watch. It doesn’t have an Amitabh Bachchan in Black, it has Danny Dengzonpa, it doesn’t have Rani Mukherjee in Black, it has an intriguing face called Gauri, it doesn’t have all that glamour, it has the pain, the story, the passion, and the turmoil that every filmmaker wants its audience to see.
P.S- All you who havn’t seen the trailer, and are eager to watch it, join the facebook group as FROZEN-THE FILM, and catch everything related to it.
