Gaali Si Laage Malhaar: Rain Songs For Dukhi Aashiq’s

Bas bas! We had enough fun and masti with rain songs in my last post (last bole toh not my aakhri post ever but my previous post. lol). Here’s the link for those of you who missed out on it :) It’s now time to devote some attention to those rain songs in which the rain clouds don’t just bring rain drops but also bring some yaadein–I call ‘em rain songs for the dukhi-aashiq-type-variety :-) And, yes, it’s STILL raining here in DC!

But, before that, I present you with random lyrics about rain I came up with (all the bahaadur MDs in the house, raise your hands up high! lol):

Mausam yeh aayaa hai,
Zaraa behkhein hum, zaraa behko tum,
Boondon ko girne do,
Zaraa bheegein hum, zaraa bheego tum.

Bheegi hawaaein laa rahi hai,
Peghaam teraa dil ki mere dil tak.
Garaj rahe hain baadal zor se,
Chupaayegaa dil ki baat tu kab tak?
Aise mausam mei taraso naa yun,
Dil pe pehraa lagaataa hai kyun?
Aise mausam mei taraso naa yun,
Dil pe pehraa lagaataa hai kyun?

Mausam yeh aayaa hai,
Zaraa behkhein hum, zaraa behko tum,
Boondon ko girne do,
Zaraa bheegein hum, zaraa bheego tum…

Theek hai, theek hai, aur nahin pakaaoongi tum sab ko! Time to get back to udaasi waale rain songs :-)

*I enjoyed ALL of the Dev D songs, and Amit Trivedi’s Nayan Tarse is the perfect song to add to this list! I just love the fusing of rock elements from this song with shudh hindi words like “swahaa,” “daras,” “nayan,” and “bisar.” The following lines by Amitabh Bhattacharya are especially touching and happen to be my favorite part of the song–

Saawan barse, saawan barse,
Chuban de hazaar,
Saawan barse.
Gaali si laage malhaar
Nayan tarse, tarse, TARSE RE!!!!

Video

*Jee haan, I’m a big Vishal Bharadwaj fan (both films and music) and I absolutely adore Rekha Bharadwaj’s voice also, so perhaps I approach Rone Do (Maqbool) with a bias. Just look at the beauty of Gulzar’s lines–

Tap tap girtein hai barsaatein,
Toh pattein rotein hain,

Dekh bahaar mei jeene waalo ke bhi gam hote hai…

In fact, the entire song is so beautiful…Gulzar manages to wonderfully express the state we all go through at some point in our life when we just feel like crying our eyes out…the song brings back memories of this line: “Jee mei aataa hai tere daaman mei sir chupaa ke hum rotein rahein, rotein rahein…” from Tere Binaa Zindagi Se (Aandhi).

Rone do, jiyaa kare,
Rone do naa!, jee bhar ke,
Khaali nahin,
Hote kabhi,
Nainaa mere,
Rone do…

Aise bhar aaye aankhein, piyaa,
Sadiyaan rulaaye aankhein.

Dard guzar jaaye jab hadh se dard nahi hotaa re…

Video

Anyone got any tissues? Chal chadd yaar! Moving on…

*Viju Shah’s Tip Tip Barsaa (Mohra) may not completely be a “melancholic” rain song, but the following lines by Anand Bakshi, plus the way Alka Yagnik stretches the “main kyaa karoon” bit, does give it that feel–

Tip tip barsaa paani,
Paani ne aag lagaayi,
Aag lagi dil mein toh,
Dil ko teri yaad aayi,
Teri yaad aayi toh,
Jal utthaa meraa bheegaa badan,
Ab tum hi bataao sajjan,
Main kyaa karoon?!

Video

*Silsila Yeh Chaahat Kaa (Devdas) has got to make it onto this list of rain songs. This song is full of the sounds of rain and thunder. It’s interesting to see how Shreya Ghoshal has evolved as a singer over the years. I wonder where Ismail Darbar has disappeared after Rasiya Sajjan? Nusrat Badr, who also wrote Thodde Badmaash Ho Tum (Saawariya), packs this song with plenty of rain and toofani weather references:

Mausam ne li angdaayi, aayi, aayi,
Lehraake barkhaa phir chaayi, chaayi, chaayi,
Jhonkaa hawaa kaa aayegaa aur yeh diyaa bujh jaayegaa…

Phir se baadal garajaa hai, garaj, garaj ke barsaa hai,
Jhoom ke toofaan aayaa, par tujh ko bujhaa nahin paayaa hai,
O piyaa, yeh diyaa,
Chaahe jitnaa sataaye tujhe yeh saawan,
Yeh hawaa aur yeh bijliyaan,
Mere piyaa, ab aa jaa re mere piya…

Video

*I really enjoyed both Atif Aslam’s Meri Kahaani and Doorie. I can’t believe I forgot to add Hum Raahi to my previous list of rain songs. Anyway, I’m not going to repeat the mistake again, so here’s adding O Re Piya (Doori) to this second list :-) This song revolves around judaayi from one’s beloved before and after saawan kaa maheenaa…

O re piyaa, meraa tarse jiyaa,
Kyun tu naa aaye re?
Nainaa tarse,
Pal, pal barse,
Tujhe bulaaye re,
O re piya…

Preet ke mausam yeh albele,
Beet rahey hum kyun hain akele?
Nainaa jaage saari rein,
Udd gayi nindiyaa, khoyaa chain…

Reet yeh kaisi ki kaun banaaye?
Saawan beetaa piyaa naa aaye!

Sanjh bahey uss door gagan mei,
Mann bhaagey sooney aangan mei…

Video

*Wow! There are plenty of private albums with rain songs, and Hans Raj HansSili Sili Hawaa (Chorni), composed by Anand Raaj Anand,  is one of the most dard-bharaa songs about the rains ever! In fact, I try to avoid listening to this song ’cause it’s just soooooo sad!!! Here are some beautiful Punjabi lyrics by Amardeep Gill–

Eh jo sili sili aundi hai hawaa,
Kithey koi raundaa hovegaa…
Yaadaan mere vangan seene naal laa,
Kithey koi raundaa hovegaa…

Binaa badaraa toh hovi barsaat jo,
Chunni nu nichoddi jaave kotthe chaddi raat jo,
Pallaa chann’ daa vi pijh jo gayaa,
Kithe koi raundaa hovegaa…

Video

*Anand-Milind’s Saawan Barse Tarse Dil (Dahek) is a sweet duet sung by Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam. The lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri are drenched in innocence–

Saawan barse, tarse dil,
Kyun naa nikle ghar se dil?
Barkhaa mei bhi dil pyaasaa hai,
Yeh pyaar nahin toh kyaa hai?
Dekho kaisaa beqaraar, bhare baazaar mei,
Yaar ek yaar ke intezaar mei…

Chhamm, chhamm, chale paagal pawan,
Aaye mazaa bheege baalam,
Bheege baalam, phisle kadam,
Barkhaa bahaar mei…

Video

*AR Rahman’s Nahin Saamne is one of my favorite songs from Taal (my other favorite is Ni Main Samajh Gayi). The song is just so moving…Sach mei…Hariharan is such a talented singer. I wish we could hear more of him these days :-( Anand Bakshi briefly mentions rain–

Teraa naam maine liyaa hai yahaan,
Mujhe yaad tune kiyaa hai wahaan.
Badde zor ki aaj barsaat hai,
Badde zor ki aaj barsaat hai.
(I love the way Hariharan stretches out the word “barsaat.”)

Kasam se, kyaa zabbardast gaanaa hai! Just fills your eyes with tears, hai naa?

Video

*Laxmikant-Pyaarelal’s Haay Haay Yeh Majboori (Roti Kapda Aur Makaan) makes me smile. Lyricist Santosh Anand’s use of the words “tere do takiya di naukri ve meraa laakhon kaa saawan jaaye” just makes me laugh. It’s such a candid line :-)

Video

*Sukhwinder Singh, Kailash Kher and Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Ji are the three singers who can do complete justice to songs that require expression of pathos. Needless to say NFAK sounds amazing in More Saiyyaan Toh Hai Pardes and Sajnaa Tere Binaa from Bandit Queen. These are extremely beautiful compositions which combine the themes of intezaar and saawan. You know, I wonder what it is about rainy weather that lends itself to songs about yaadein and missing someone–I mean we don’t really have songs about missing a significant other amidst a snowstorm or drought. lol. Anyway, I could go on and on writing thoughts that come to mind after listening to these two NFAK songs, but I’ll let you check out Tushar’s write-up instead: click here.

*Aisi Sazaa (Gulaal) is an absolutely mesmerizing composition. It’s been quite some time since the music of Gulaal has been out there, and Aisi Sazaa is the song I turn to the most from the Gulaal OST. Shilpa Rao’s voice, Piyush Mishra’s lyrics and melody–everything just goes together so well. My favorite line besides “tanhaayi bhi tanhaa nahin,” would have to be:

Aise mein baarish ki boondon se apni saanson ko sehlaa bhi do,
Badhti hawaaon ke jhonko se dil ko naghmaa koi laa bhi do,
Palkon ki kohro pe baithi nami ko, dheeme se pighlaa bhi do
.

You can read my initial thoughts about the song here.

Audio

*Udaasi bharey geet about rainy weather seems to be a favorite of Adnan Sami. Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein (Kabhi Toh Nazar Milaao) has some really awesome lyrics by Riaz-Ur-Rehman Sagar. The unplugged version of this song is also quite nice and has a calming effect.

Bheegi bheegi raaton mein, phir tum aao naa,
Aisi barsaaton mein, aao naa.

Dhadkanon mein aa gayaa hai, ek nagmaa tere pyaar kaa,
Jaise koi sur milaa ho, dil ke taar se, dil ke taar kaa.
Pal ki hansi mein, yun hi dillagi mein yeh dil gayaa,
Humein kyaa milaa hai? Tumhe toh meraa dil bhi mil gayaa!
Leke pyaar aankhon mein, leke pyaar aankhon mein, aao naa.

Aa rahi hai teri yaadein, dil meraa phir beqaraar hai,
Tum milogi, haan milogi, dil ko mere aetbaar hai.
Khuli hai yeh baahein, dekhe yeh nigaahein rastaa teraa,
Zaraa muskuraake, phir se dikhaa de woh hi adaa.
Yaa toh meri yaadon mein, yaa toh meri yaadon mein, aao naa.

Video

*Adnan Sami’s Baarish Ki Boondein (Kisi Din), although it uses words like “betaabi,” “sitam,” “roshani bhi jaa rahi hai” is still a rather catchy and fast-paced composition. I love the way Adnan Sami repeats the words “rim jhim” throughout the song. Even the English lyrics, “raindrops keep fallin’ from the skies, like the tears from my eyes,” fits in with the song, unlike other compositions where English words feel forced in.

Baarish ki rim jhim kuch gaa rahi hai,
Betaabi dil pe mere chaa rahi hai,
Khushbu hawaa bhi teri laa rahi hai, laa rahi hai,
Armaano pe sitam dhaa rahi hai,
Teri khabar naa koi aa rahi hai,
Shamaa ki roshni bhi jaa rahi hai,
Teri yaad aa rahi hai, aa rahi hai,
Meri jaan jaa rahi hai…

Saare nagme, saare mausam,
Dil jalaaye ab toh har dum.
Milne julne ki majboori,
Dard ban gayi ab yeh doori.

Umeedon ke deep jalaaye,
Baithaa hoon main khwaab sajaaye.

Yeh furkat kaa gam tadpaaye,
Ek lamhaa bhi chain naa aaye.

Video

*Lo ji, another Adnan Sami song about the rain–this time it’s Bheega Mausam (Kabhi Toh Nazar Milaao). Lyrics are by Riaz-Ur-Rehman Sagar again. I dunno…the whiny feel to the song REALLY bothers me!

Video

*I LOVE Shankar-Jaikishan’s Saawan Beetaa Jaaye (Saanjh Aur Saveraa). Kyaa mast vocals hai yaar! Mohammed Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur are AWESOME! SUPERB duet!!! Hasrat Jaipuri’s lyrics are also lovely (The video is quite funny, though. Do check it out! lol)–

Ajhun naa aaye baalamaa,
Saawan beetaa jaaye…

Neend bhi akhiyan dwaar naa aaye,
Tose milan ki aas bhi jaaye!
Aayi bahaar, khile phulwaa,
More sapne kaun sajaaye?

Chaand ko badraa garwaa lagaaye,
Aur bhi moraa mann lalchaaye,

Yaar haseen, gale lag jaa!
Mori umr guzarti jaaye.

Video

*How can I forget Jagjit Singh’s famous Yeh Daulat Bhi Le Lo (Aaj)? I’ll always remember Sudarshan Faakir’s lyrics–

Yeh daulat bhi le lo, weh shauhrat bhi le lo,
Bhale cheen lo mujh se meri jawaani,
Magar mujh ko lautaa do bachpan kaa saawan,
Woh kaaghaz ki kashti, woh baarish kaa paani…

Video

And on this nostalgic note, I conclude my two-part series about rain songs. Please feel free to continue to share your favorite rain songs and to build onto the list…

*Here’s signing off with my favorite song from the “melancholic rain songs” category: Sandesh Shandilya’s Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajanaa (Jab We Met)–even though the tone of the song, the use of the flute, and Ustad Rashid Khan’s voice is full of pathos, there is still an underlying feeling of hope, of umeed, of optimism which is waning, but not dead. Take a look at Irshad Kamil and Faiz Anwar’s lyrics–

Aaoge jab tum o saajanaa, Anganaa phool khilengey,
Barsegaa saawan, barsegaa saawan, jhoom, jhoom ke!
Do dil aise milenge.

Chandaa ko taakoon raaton mein,
Hai zindaggi tere haathon mein,
Palkon pe jhilmil taare hain,
Aanaa bhari barsaaton mein.
Sapno kaa jahaan, hogaa khilaa khilaa…

Video

Barsegaa saawan, jhoom, jhoom ke. Do dil aise milenge.

Good to see Rone do being talked about. Rekha Ji has ways to meander around the song and create an aura of loneliness and melancholy. Be it this or Ye kaisi chaap, Ek wo din bhi the.
Ismail Darbar is a genius of course. He knows how to create an atmospheric ambiance in his songs. That’s perhaps one reason why his songs deserve a specific mood, a specific day. Even Silsila is full of so much sorrow and melancholy. Was listening to Roshni Ghataa from Shakti recently. Same sense of pathos. Saawariya is another classic no doubt.
Saawan Barse is sweet nostalgia. A couple trying hard to meet yet failing and enjoying their little failure while crooning this one of a kind number. The church bells, the restrained rhythm(ek mohabbat ka deewana), the melody(chham chham chale), classic stuff.
Jagjit Singh’s eternal ode to the rains(for me) would be Garaj Baras.

Loved it then, love it now.
‘Ek Woh Din Bhi The’ is another fave of mine.
Took me 5yrs to find it!

Adnan Sami ka toh koi bhi gaana, kisi bhi situation mein fit hain!
    Glad u mentioned him :-)

Have no idea of the lyrics, but Rekha had this haunting rain song in ‘Gunghroo Ki Aawaaz’ by Asha Bhonsle.
    Do u know it?

And ‘Zindagi ki na toote ladee’ from KRANTI!
    Wah!

‘Ye jo sili sili’ is beautiful.
I don’t like many Punjabi songs, but that one?

This song realy takes some where else… bahut kuch yaad dilata hai.. have a look…

lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
wahi aag seene mein phir jal padi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai

kuchh aise hi din the wo jab ham mile the
chaman mein nahin phool dil mein khile the
wahin to hai mausam magar rut nahin wo
mere saath barsaat bhi ro padi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai

koyi kaash dil pe bas haath rakh de
mere dil ke tukdon ko ik saath rakh de
magar ye hain khwaabon khayaalon ki baaten
kabhi toot kar cheez koyi judi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
wahi aag seene mein phir jal padi hai

hmmm….some of the songs were expected…looks like i gotta chk out rone do and o re piya….
    here are few others :
jadoo hai ye naya naya (humko ishq ne maara) – i like this song for its simplicity…d first stanza purely focusses on rain…n it has dat “whirlpool” girl(dunno her name) swaying to it….love this part of the song…
jeena (dum) – again a very sweet romantic rain number…Diya Mirza is beautiful in the video…vocals of Sonu Nigam n Soumyah Rao are equally good….
Saanson ko saanson (humtum) – i don’t think i have to say much abt this one…everybody knows how good it is…Babul Supriyo and Alka Yagnik are mesmerising and so are Saif and Rani…the instrumental version also deserves a mention….
bhaage re mann (chameli) – woo..loved Kareena in this song…and Sunidhi at her best…
n yea like u mentioned many private albums with rain songs…here are a couple :
Maula – Ustad Sultan Khan (Gurus in collaboration) – a very nice track….Ustad Sultan Khan adds some thing to rain songs…well so many of them…n i’ve liked almost all of them (aaoge jab tum, leja leja)
    neele neele ambar (Nitin Bali-Baliwood) – i love this song…although Kishore’s was a classic…this isn’t a bad remix of the original one…unlike other cheap remixes….love d video too….

And now I should feel ashamed of myself for putting this song here as again, it’s all about saawan, minus rain, and the lyrics are quite daft!!!

But Aadesh Srivastava’s moojik is nice ;)

very interesting article, as always Amanda:-)

just thought these songs could also be added to an already ‘magical’ one!

    - tip tip tip tip baarish (from Afsana Pyar Ka)
    - barsaat ke mausam mein (from Naajaayaz)
    - sun sun sun barsaat ki dhun (from Sir)

there is also one song from Andar Baahar which is nice to listen to…forgot the lines!!

Nice post! One of my favs is Kahan Se Aaye Badra from Chashme Baddoor, Yesudas is absolutely spell-binding in this semi-classical melody. It nicely straddles both the romantic and sad genres.

Hi Neelam. Thanks for bringing up Ijaazat’s songs. My 2 posts on rain songs were never meant to be comprehensive. I just picked about 40 songs out of the hundreds of rain songs out there…

    Hey All,

Have anyone heard “Udaas Pani” by Gulzar & Abhishek rey??
It is a compilation of Gulzar’s Kawitaayen on Baarish rendered by Gulzar himself with fusion music (amazing fusion of Indian & Western classical music.. a must listen) by Abhishek rey.

There r not much of rhyming in the album as it is just the poetry rendered by Gulzar but, the those lines with that fusion music gives u one of the rarest combo.

    The title track is like..

Subah se dekh-dekh kaise baras raha hai udaas paan,
Fuhaar ke malmali duppte se ud rahe hain..
    tamam mausam tapak raha hai…
palak-palak ris rahi hai ye kayanaat saari…

    & it goes like that…

My favorite track from the album is ‘Kab Aate Ho’
Though its not a rain song but it has some soul stirring lyrics….

Aur haan.. when it comes to rain..how can I forget the track “piya tora kaisa abhimaan” from the movie Raincoat.
specially the female version, where Gulzar says,

    Koi mausam ka zhoonka tha..
Jo is deewar par latki tasweer tirchi kar gaya hai..

gaye mausam me ye deewaren yun sili nahi thi..
magar is dafa na jane kyon inme seelan aa gayi hai…
    dararen pad gayi hai…

    aur seelan behti hai…aise
jaise… khusk rukhsaroon pe geelen aason chalte ho..

    Ye barrish…
ye barish gungunati thi…isi chhat ki munderon par..
ye khidki-khidkiyon k kaanch pe ubgli se likh jaati thi sandese…
bilakhti baithi rehti hai ab..band roshandano k peeche..

hawa ki saans kyon bojhal hai?
meri waakif thi jab aati thi..
    aur bhar jaati thi aise..
jaise badbaan bhathe hain kasti mein..

    Dupehren aisi lagti hai..
bina muhron ke khaali khaane rakhe hain…
na koi khelne wala hai baazi..
aur na hi koi chaal chalta hai..

na din hota hai…aur na hi raat..
    sabhi kuch ruk gaya hai…

wo kya mausam ka jhonka tha…jo is deewar par latki tasweer tirchi kar gaya hai…
