Gajendra Ahire’s ‘Gangot’ (Relatives)
Hey Guys,
Yesterday was great day… as i got to see a wonderful film after a long long time… and it also gave me reason to be here again as it would have been great injustice not to have mentioned this film to my pfc buddies. The film is a marathi film, directed by Gajendra Ahire, a young film director, maybe lesser know but alreadt hs more than eight to ten films ti his credit.
Infact I should thank Ravi Kale who also plays the protaganist for inviting me for th screening at Ketnav, Bandra. So the film is a simple film, according to me, even better tha ’shwas’ for many reasons… for me watching ‘Shwas’ was like watching a hindi film, as it was for the first time that i was seeing a marathi film that looked like any other hindi film…
But Gangot or relatives/relation talks about what a farmers life can really get to, especially when when their entire life is dependent on the earnings they make through Farming… Vithu is the eldest, followed by another brother and the youngest sister… Their father leaves behind 12 acres of farming land, the second brother has become a lecturer and now lives in Pune, Sister is also married to a greedy doctor and now she lives in Bombay. The only person who has left behind to take care is Vithu who is the son of the soil… he tills the land, does everything a farmer does till one day where his sister comes crying asking her share of the land for her husband to buy a shop next to his clinic in Bombay. Seeing that his sister’s marriage is on the rocks because she is not getting her share. Vithu parts with his four acres of the land…..
Now how can the other brother can stay behind? His wife instigates him to go and get his share of the land too as they too deserved their ’share’. An argument takes place and the lecturer’s wife ends up saying something so nasty that Vithu is again forced to part with another four acres of land to his younger brother…
Thus come bad days with only three thousnad rupees of income and so many expenses including the education of Vithu’s son in pune where he lives in a hostel.
The best thing about Gangot is a mind blowing performance by Ravi Kale. The guy who played Chander in Sarkar, Amitji’s right hand man… also the credit and full marks go to Gajendra who has used Ravi so well as an actor, the simple nature of Vithu, who has lived all his life in a village, the entire characterisation of Ravi’s Character is so well defined that the film actually makes u feel like crying. So perfect is the time that a film like this is coming when we are seeing so many farmers commiting suicide all over the nation. Alka Kubal another great theatre artist is superb as Sumai, Ravi’s wife. The guy who plays Ravi’s son is extremely convincing too…
In all a beautiful film with great lines and a marathi version of the very famous ‘Mungda’ song too and it works… and guess what? The entire film has been shot in ten days only…
I only wish and appeal that people please go and suppport this film, see it… our international audience just keep hoping that you even get to hear about it…
Gajendra Ahire, congratulations!!!

Surendra, Please convey my congratulations to Ravi…he deserves accolades…
Gajendra has been making some thought-provoking films in the last few years. I will wait to see this film. Ravi is an excellent actor - apart from the usual stuff which we all have seen (like in Sarkar), he was superb in A M R Ramesh’s Kannada film Cyanide.
thx 4 updating about the movie…yeah GA has been making some really good movies…looking forward 4 this one…:)
Hey Surya, this the same guy who is also in ‘Aag’??
He wears glasses in the film??
Oh man, he is brilliant!!
And even yesterday I sat there thinking how superb he was in ‘Sarkar’ and even in ‘Aag’ he stood out in a very small role.
Sounds like a good movie matey!
Won’t be available here, but will keep a look out for it anyway!
Cheers..
kumar, utpal, anand and steve…
sorry haven’t divulged the entire story as i didnt want to disclose the plot… but was really happy to see a good film and Ravi Kale rocks…
Hey Surya, any idea when is this movie releasing ?
Yeah I would like to know, too, when its releasing?
Wow!
I thought it got released and was looking for it in cinema’s listing, would love to go and watch it.
Wrapping up a film in 10 days is a record of sorts, I guess. Did they shoot digital(HD). It would be interesting to see the results. I know people who have finished good films (foreign) in about 15-20 days time but 10days is quite a hasty affair. Of course if the logistics and the script allows it is do-able. I would love to work on films where it is all over with a few weeks.
Anyway, I happen to get on this site accidentally, its good to get info on cinema other than mainstream Hindi cinema, which is not my cup of tea and therefore I keep away from it (nothing against cinema or hindi).
Please keep giving info on regional cinema which I would love to explore more than mainstream.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
KJ
P.S. An article below on promising Bengali directors which I stumbled upon, think there would be folks here who might like it.

hi surya,
what’s your take on RGV KI AAG? and how is his next film DARLING? will he bounce back? i have a lot of expectations from DARLING..hope it doesnt disappoint me like AAG!
I have been followin Gajendra Ahire’s wrk very closely since “not only Mrs. Raut”….but his best wrk uptill now i think was “Shevri”…Bliv me the maturity wid which he has handled this movie will really astound lot many…Is “Gangot” gonna hv theatrical release anytime soon…i hd been eagerly awaiting for his nxt movie
sounds interesting surya….lookin forward to it….hope it gets a good release and gets seen by lot of ppl…more power to film makers like GA!!
Zoorya…thnx 4 the post. warna pata hi nahi chalta. think filmmakers like ahire should use d net n blog as a promotional tool more. will surely catch it.
Ricky,
I didnt like Aag… and thats not because its a remake off Sholay RGV continues to be someone i will always admire… but the premises the film is based didn’t work for me… but hats off to RGV for having the balls to even touch that film…
Sammy - yes its releasing around diwali time…
Kapil - I totally agree with u…
Phoenixnu - Hope Gajendra is reading all these comments…
Surendra, what I find is very few Marathi films are available on dvd and hence it is very hard to get hold of them for overseas fans. I hope many of the recent (as well as vintage) Marathi movies get released on DVD.
surya,
hey you didnt mention anything about DARLING..how’s it shaped up..sure you know it..
Hi ricky… I can assure you that Darling is way bettter than ‘aaag’ have seen the rushes and few scenes here and there, Esha Deol will get a new lease of life as an actor, she is good in whatever i saw.
Shantanu - I totally agree with you pal…
Happy Birthday Zurya, and many happy returns!! May all your dreams come true this year!
hey surya,
DARLING is superb! really liked it…wish RGV and the entire team on my behalf…did you watch it? what’s your reaction?
