Get A Celebrity To Say Few Things About Your Film….

Shivajee Chandrabhushan   | Exclusive, Frozen Musings | September 8, 2009 at 3:17 am

screening of FrozenYes, that is what I have been hearing from the time we wanted to run a publicity campaign for Frozen. We wanted to follow a new way of releasing an independent film…very few prints (three to be precise),  platform/staggered release, low cost marketing and blah blah. But one support we wanted was from the media, to write something interesting about the film  and create the “buzz”.

Frozen having travelled to 32 international film festivals and having won 22 awards, we thought it would be easy for the media to write interesting things about an Independant film from India. Shot in extreme conditions, no big names attached, self financed (truly independant), no studios to support us…wow what great material to talk about. SO WE THOUGHT!!! The thing came to my head when I was told “Please get a celebrity to give a quote”.

Wow, I thought…whom to contact? My Mumbai release date was announced by that time and I turned to Anurag Kashyap to say things about the film. Well he did that as he had loved the film anyway . Lo and behold…I see my film hoarding and poster and Anurag’s name covers half the space :-).  You type Shivajee Chandrabhushan Frozen in Google and pop…Anurag’s name comes up. Hey, I am not complaining about Anurag, he is a good friend (he was the first person to mention Frozen in PFC 2 years back. Thank you Anurag for doing that for me. Anyway I was happy to get good audience in Mumbai, Pune (thanks to Satyendra Jha) had one full house show, and (badly publicised) Delhi screenings. People kept complaining about not being able to watch the film as they missed it, were not aware of it, never saw anything in the media etc etc. Media was never interested as they never found anything juicy to write about.

I thought ok…lets see what happens if I win a National Award? Well , yesterday Frozen won two of them. I check the electronic and print media and I see them crying hoarse that “The Khans Lost to Prakash Raj”, “Southies defeat Bollywood” and Frozen which has won Swarna Kamal(Golden Lotus) for Best Debut Feature and Rajat Kamal(Silver Lotus) for Cinematography (for Shanker Raman) finds nil coverage. We were foolish enough to think that a debut feature and best cinematography are good enough reasons for the media to take notice of our humble beings. By the way, I don’t want to name other big bollywood films “defeated” by Frozen, (c’mon it is not a competion).

One last message for all the Independent Filmmakers….better to align yourself to some or the other camp rather than trying to break this mammoth ugly monster called “Bollywood” on your own. Please know what you are doing before selling your car, home etc and jumping into this bandwagon. Get a girl friend who is in media, have enough booze to quench the thirst of the media…forget about good cinema. Make something aligning yourself to some studio or some camp and then one day break away, if you can, and make that one film which you always wanted to make. Don’t make a classic with your first film.

Well on that note I am ending my writings coloum in PFC regarding Frozen. Thank you PFC for supporting my cause for the last one and half years. Quite a few people here are bored of Frozen by now. Frozen is still travelling across India with DVD release happening very soon.

Shit…I am still going on and on about Frozen….

What to do I am getting my first National Award.

  1. Shivajee, dont get too cynical or downbeat. I can understand your frustration, having had to walk through half a dozen inane headlines, with no meaning yesterday. For the media, Bollywood is Indian Cinema, period, its too predominant, and all of us know that media works on TRP’s nowadays. Don’t let this affect you, and just keep going on. It would be sad if folks like you lose hope due to such incidents.

    • However getting people like Aamir Khan to endorse your movie does help to get more visibility, so nothing wrong in that per se. One reason why indie cinema flourished in the US, is due to the backing of stars like George Clooney, Robert Redford, Sean Penn who have bought more visibility to it.

  2. Shivajee- I’m sure you understand that the media is only interested in highlighting the big names. The day is not far when you would receive your due from the very same media. So dont get too worried about it.Now take a well deserved break ( which you’ve planned )- you certainly need it :)

  3. Hi Shivajee

It is really sad that you had to go through this. Sorry that as a part of the media I too never spoke to anyone from you team.

But seriously… did you even hire a publicist? No one even did anything except an interview i saw bollywoodhungama. You handled the publicity? i did want to talk to you then but there didn’t seem to be anyway to reach you…

i won’t be defending the media but there needs to be a definite publicity campaign and just getting names like Anurag Kashyap to endorse the film does not always help. It didn’t help Sankat City much despite it having a way larger cast than your film. because at some level the publications you seek attention are primarily star driven… they are read for afternoon gossip and entertainment.

There are only a handful publications that talk more about films. Maybe you should have targeted them…

While media is blamed by many for leading the readers wrong, it could also be looked at as a mirror to what people want to read… and how they think. I have wanted to do so many stories as a journalist which just does not get a website any hits. Indians probably are not too much into film as a mode of art. They are meant for entertainment considering the amount of money that goes in for every ticket. and when they don’t want to watch it, it is assumed they would not want to read about it as well.

Publicity and marketing, today, is as important as the film. A film like Kambakkth Ishq was drubbed by the critics but the promotions got it the opening and the money. So it is not always about critics as well.

Let’s hope you don’t give into bitterness and cynicism and make more movies.

    All the best

Well yes we had a publicist and a top one during the release. He tried but then it is true that none of the print media and electronic media were not ready to come unless Danny Saab confirmed his presence. I am ever so grateful to Danny Saab for trying to veer the questions towards Frozen :-).
Well the situation hasn’t changed today and the result vis-a-vis the media coverage after the award announcement,is in front of you.

I very well understand that entertainment is nip-slip, or star tantrums and love affairs.
I can’t blame the media, I am not doing that. It is just that the media coverage was better in say Spain than my own country. I might sound cynical and cribbing boy but then I am just bringing the present state of affairs to light.

Of course it doesn’t stop me from doing my stuff :-).

      Cheers to Good Cinema….. :yahoo:

Noyon, I personally tried reaching your offices through our publicist. There was no response. Not that our publicist did not try, they did. We announced a press conference with Danny and the cast being present. We spent on that but not many from the media arrived, who did asked about inane questions away from the film at hand. Shivajee is aware and that is why he says what he says.
Anyway, I don’t blame you. There were many who just flippantly told us that they had seen Frozen whereas we know they hadn’t!! So, its not the media alone..

I can totally understand the way you are feeling now & must say even I was utterly disappointed having to scourge thrugh the muck-full rakhi sawant controversies, the khan war being truced by another khan and other such load of cock & bull stories, both on tv & print, just to figure out your feat being mentioned somewhere.
    .
BUT what you derive fromm this ghastly experience is a lot unfair… i mean towards the craft. cuz had u become a rocking media whore & made a crap film, you wouldn’t get zilch / mundu. you stayed true to your craft & passion and today the world is eating outta your hands!
    .
What I believe is that each film has a destiny of its own, beyond the ones of the maker & the cast n crew. Plus, each film has its intentions very clear. OSO & Frozen [though dft ends of the spectrum] are sparkling examples of the VICTORY of the fact that the intentions of the makers were very clear and thats when you connect with the audience.
    .
P.S.: having said all that i had to, the fact remains that having KJo or Yash uncle on your friend list makes sense any day! :)

I am sure Shanker would have seen it coming considering he’s had some experience in the TV media.

(Almost)All media is entertainment, not news. So if you wanted to be on it, you’ve had to pay a price. If you want to put out a positive article without ‘entertainment’, you got to pay for it or get a star to endorse it.

Sc*&w the media. Use it like a condom-just to be on the safer side. Don’t give it more importance than it deserves. Appreciation from audiences in Mumbai and Pune is a zillion times bigger considering just the other day they made ‘Ghajini’ or ‘Singh is King’ a hit.

I missed the film as I was travelling and it went out by the time I got back. Same thing happend during the Lions of Punjab release. Haven’t seen a copy of that DVD in the market yet. But I know Shankar rocks and so does Frozen. Hope to see it on DVD. Cheers Shivajee and Shanker.

Congratulations Shivajee. You are right. I read about Kanjeevaram winning awards. I read interviews of Prakash Raj, Priyadarshan and Umashree (Gulabi Talkies). Only when I saw this post, did I realize that Frozen had won two national awards. Pankaj Advani too didnt receive any media buzz about Sankat City. However, Shashanka was successful. You are right again, when you say that winning 22 awards across the globe and winning 2 national awards without any studio support, should have attracted the media itself to Frozen. Amazing. Yours is a case study.

And even this hoophla of people knowing Anurag I think is just because of Emosanal Athyachaar song and the controversial statements he make. But now he has his legions of fans who will watch no matter what he makes. With internet making waves and creating opportunities for independent filmmakers like you, its time to rejoice not to feel low or sad.

Shivaji sir… firstly heartiest congratulations on ‘Frozen’ … all the accolades and awards… all of it is well deserved… unfortunately, our media today is all about yellow journalism, its about making stories and creating a ruckus… the tone in which I am unhappy about you not getting your due coverage, its also still good, that the media did not start up creating stories like ‘Frozen story was originally written by XYZ’ .. which could taken all your satisfaction of winning the award into an anger… with journalists being a name and no face (physically or being under the garb of ‘journos’) lately the authenticity and the way a news rubs off on a person doesn’t bother them … So for all we know… for no fault or even without asking, the ‘KHANS’ are defeated by prakash raj (come on, the 2 Khans know if they do a barah anna or a 3 deewarein, or even if a Salman in Saawariya kinds, they will be awarded and toasted up by media even if these folks wouldn’t ve even seen the movies… so they dont even have to bother for now…)… so sir, all I am trying to say (you’d already be knowing anyways :) ) abhi toh cherish this moment… this is huge… and you know how huge it is, and so do a lot of folks like us in PFC… the one thing I have noticed in the ‘bollywood’ mafiasoed world is that all you gotta do is keep holding and being present.. somehow or the other… sooner or later, if you are still around, you would somehow make it big… and make real big… in your case, when you do that … you also got a huge backup now, which will be paraded around then, cementing you for permenency in media, books and audience…. keep holding on sir… as much as Frozen is celebrated today, Frozen will be back in full swing, few years down the line.. again .. and this time, with even more mass acceptance…

But this avoidance from people of their own states has not stopped or discouraged these devoted filmsmakers and they have been making films since decades and they have not compromised in their films to make them suitable for the general audience’s taste.
If words like Market, audience, media etc etc will start affecting so deeply the courage then it will become difficult to make sensible films. So examples are there and these creators have been survining for long. and they still make films.
Not all can become super stars but then not all can become universally reputed actors/directors etc.
Choice is there before one. Preference is independently available to everyone.)

  27. All those who are asking me to keep a saner mind and enjoy…kindly read the heading of this article and see the first question…Dharm has won the Best Feature Film For National Integretion…Frozen has won The Best First Film of A Director…can anyone tell me what does a debutant director mean??

I understand, Nargis Dutt Award for National Integration goes to Dharm, and it is the Director’s First Film.

My question is does that make the director to be the first Debutant Director to win a National Award???

Now please don’t give crap to me not to be cynical and crib about media…

Congratulations on the National Award! It is a big feat.. And dont let what you have gone through dilute the celebration. I agree the film industry can be a tough place to be in, turning optimists into cynics. But I guess you are still lucky Shivaji, your film released, got recognised, got awarded. There are still many who are still waiting… Write in something encouraging for them! :) After all, you have ‘made it’! Albeit with trouble and roadblocks.. We all go through shit. The point is, who comes out. And you did!

Ha ha! Rakhi ka swayamvar! :) But yes, these errors are totally disastrous and unpardonable. We also won the Best Film on Social Welfare last year for our Bengali film and NO ONE wrote! This year, TZP wins the same award and voila! Its news! It sucks totally and I am sure and hopeful that more responsible journalists will come. The crap has to go, sooner or later.

@SC – First of all, many congrats for winning the accolades for the movie. Though its not fair to say that you should not be disheartened, as the movie is not getting it proper credits. You should be. And the way you have fought till now, I know it will pay some day or other.

Your work is speaking for you…let media do their work. Sooner or later, they will realize their mistake. Its unfortunate that the complex behaviour of the journalists in film industry is unpredictable. If you are good to them, they will be good to you is a doubtful question.

The more you give, the more you find is an old saying…and it now happen only in utopian world. But then no body can stop you to explore new horizons and challenges.

Though I haven’t seen the movie, but the long list of awards says all. Will definitely watch is whenever I get a chance.

All i can say is – Good Bless. Rock Hard. Kick Ass and carry on the way you want. Looking forward for a lot from you.

congratulations for yor national award and all your international awards.i would be more than happy if i could watch your film its not yet released in kolkata.hope its been shown at the kolkata film festival this year.now you shouldnt blame the media .i would never dicuss maths with my friends or tell them the benifit of it bcoz i have a problem understanding it.thats the problem with media they dont understand cinema.now you know it better than i do.what would they write about your film when none of them have seen it or none of them could understand.they still think someone who made ‘its all about loving your parents’ is the best director of this country.have you ever found any article where they dicussed about takeshi kitano’s films or kim ki duk’s work.now when it comes to any english film they would publish the review given by any critic of chicago times or so.thats easier for them.i am not blaming them as you cant blame me for not knowing maths.my request is to keep doing good work and keep inspiring us.once thank you.

Dont know if this is any relevent, but heres a poem for you (have picked it up from an old Baja caliber ad)

    “I’m not a star
There is no Halo over my head

Fate doesn’t like the colour of my eyes
Struggle and strife are old friends of mine

    Who am i?
    I’m survival. I’m guts. I’m pride

    I like odds
    especially when they’re
    stacked against me

    Because there’ll come a time
When I’ll stare them in the eye

    And smile the smile of
the one who’s pulled it off

I am the guy who will have
deep lines on his face someday

And it’ll make me look good
    When i laugh

    Because that is the day
    I’ll fear no fear

And taste sweat that is sweet

    And look back for the
    very first time and say,

    I did it my way
    The long hard way!

    Listen!

In Pune 35 people died in 34 days because of swine flu (and ppl are still dying). Electronic media mysteriously stopped the swine flu coverage after the 8th/ 9 th death in India. you know why because information and broadcasting ministry served them the notice not to create panic by the coverage. As their licences could get in trouble – they almost stopped the coverage – civic hospitals in pune as well as in India still having lots of loopholes – to uncover them electronic media support was must – but now the whole issue has been hushed ! If this is the tragic story of reality in India – why do u cry about the tragedy of your realistic film in india?
