GHOST OF MARQUIS DE SADE HAUNTS BOLLYWOOD
Ever since SRK has been honoured by French Government with its highest cultural award, my doubts are confirmed that there is French Connection which neither Gene Heckman knew of nor Anees Bazmi could fathom with his stolen French Kiss.
And the connection lies in Bollywood’s association with Marquis De Sade. Yes the same guy who propounded that pain and cruelty enhanced sexual pleasure. Sade’s pervert thesis gave him immortality by listing in dictonary sadism, sadist, sadistic as words that symbolised in generic terms, getting pleasure out of pain–regardless of its nature.
Films churned out from Bollywood production houses in year 2007 uptill now, have inflicted so much pain on the weak and willing audiences that there is no rational explanation except blaming it on genes or supernatural influence like ghost of ‘de Sade.
I am one of those who makes it a point to watch practically every Hindi movie released in a theatre, not necessarily first day first show.Come sunshine or rain, all through these 195 plus days or so of year 2007 I went with an expectation that this time maybe I will be redeemed. But no luck. And I think I have started enjoying this pain and torture. Otherwise how can I justify my breaking the promise after watching movies and then maha movies like Salam-e-ishq, Eklavya,Ta Ra Rum Pum, Namaste London,Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Naqaab, that I will break away from my addiction and give myself a break from multiplexes!
But the way these filmmakers justify their films its amazing. You have to really admire their audacity.Three cheers to their ingenuity. When they could not convince the audiences of the mediocre offerings from their assembly lines they tried to prop up the whole thing by coming up with a different way of looking at the success of movies. They resorted to gimmicks. Like listing top five films of 2007 on basis of opening response.
According to trade pundits and their arithmatic the top five grossers for just opening weekend are: Aap Kaa Surroor, Shootout At lokhandwala, Spider-man, Namastey London and Harry Potter-Order of the Phoenix. The last one pushed Guru out of top five.Out of top five two are english films with their dubbed versions included. But it does not affect Bollywood bad-shahs. Instead of mastering the mantra to hit the screen and guage movie’s staying power, movie moguls and business barons alongwith their laptop lackeys are honing the strategies to hit and run with their movies. If audience is left bleeding with a massive hole in its pockets and left to tend to itself, so be it. De Sade would have approved of these methods anyway.
And one is keeping fingers crossed with shields across the bosom like any Braveheart, to take on the onslaught in the second half of 2007. My masochistic tendencies are on high alert for the blitz in form of Partner, Om Shanti Om, Jodha Akbar, Chak De India, Taare Zameen Par, Saawariya, Aaja Nachle. Believe me if these films pay homage to de Sade then they had it! I have high expectations from few of them to erase my prejudices. And I am really looking for movies like No Smoking and Manorama Six Feet Under to allay my fears. Though the antics of producer of No Smoking give no encouragement. Recently the producer of No Smoking Kumar Mangat forbade his distributors from smoking during a press conference –to release film’s publicity material ,and in the process reconfirming my theory of ghost of de Sade invading Bollywood. Hope my hopes don’t go up in smoke or get buried six feet under.
And if my hopes are shattered this time, I am willing to take on all these producers and perpetrators who are basically jugglers—juggling to rob Peter to pay Paul and rolling money to stay afloat. I am so overwhelmed, so charged and geared up because of existent anguish and expectant torture and pain, that my every nerve cell is craving to emulate them. I need no education, no more gyan, no passionate discussions about cinema, but just a chance to do their thing. An opportunity to do a character about-turn. From masochist to turn a sadist. To make a movie that pains and tortures audiences so much that they take a vow not to patronise multiplexes for such trash and let their pockets lose fizz and pop out like corns just to fill tax-free coffers of multiplexes and pockets of these project makers. Amen.

Ummmm….so don’t watch these films? Or find other ways to channel your masochism?
And by the way, if Hollywood badshahs are content churning out sequel after sequel of Harry Potter, Spiderman, Pirates of the Caribbean and practically every other franchisable juvenile morality tale, then why should Bollywood badshahs bother?
There’s plenty of excellent alternative cinema coming out of South America, Europe and East Asia - why waste your energy in seeing things that are aimed at intellectually challenged poor sods like me? Oh right……..the masochism.
you are a glutton for punishment krysh. but there can be great joy in pain. enjoy…
