Golmaal shouldnt have returned!

I had high hopes from Golmaal returns. Had an argument with my father who wanted to watch fashion but I insisted on going for Golmaal because I wanted to see a film where I can give my brain some rest. So instead of getting into a theatre airing a though provoking Madhur Bhandarkar film, I bought tickets for GR way in advance. But surprise surprise!! You don’t need brains to watch this flick!

I had heard and heard and heard the vacancy song umpteen times on my iPod. The movie opened with the song which was a big let down. The choreography seemed very lethargic and there was no energy at all in the video. Little did I know that the worse was yet to come.

The story is quite simple and predictable. Read on, no spoilers here. Mix masti, apna sapna money money, a little bit of andaz apna apna also, tons of spoofs, stereotype characters, add extreme PJs and voila..you get Golmaal returns!!

Let me begin with some of the biggest let downs in the film. Sorry Rohit, although I am a big fan of yours thanks to Zameen & Golmaal, I have to put forward these points:

Whats with Ekta Kapoor jokes? We have seen them in way too many movies. Money Hai to Honey Hai had Rakhee Tandon as Ekta Kapoor, and we had the lady playing herself in C Kompany. Wait a minute…wasn’t C Kompany a Tushar Kapoor film? Why is he doing this? Cracking jokes on his sister in his own films?
The sets look so fake. Where are we living here? Fantasy land?
Tons of jokes repeated – especially the spoof on Black.
Double meaning jokes – the movie is full of them. Tushar Kapoor saying “Mayo oo” about a million times is no longer funny.
How many movies have you spoofed & joked on? Tashan, Saawariya, Om Shanti Om, Cash, Raju Chacha?
Actors dressed in drag is pass'©..no longer funny.
The dialogue between Arshad Warsi & Amrita Arora – “Cheating..tumne kaha tha isme goli nahi hai?” … Now isn’t this the same dialogue shared between Aamir Khan & Salman Khan in Andaz Apna Apna. Lifting such a popular dialogue from such a popular film?
Why force in the song “Tha kar ke” at a spot where its not required?
Tushar Kapoor’s “aaaaa ooooooo eeee” was funny in Golmaal. He overdoes it in Golmaal Returns. Why?
A gay character saying “De na”, “Le na” isn’t funny if its repeated on and on.

Barring a few jokes I didn’t find the movie funny. The climax is quite well but till the time you reach the climax you are already pushed past your mental limits.

Having said that, let me point out a few positives:

Arshad Warsi rocks! If only we could get to see more of him!
Kareena Kapoor & Shreyas Talpade excel in their roles.
Vrajesh Hirjee’s Anthony Gonsalves character is funny in parts. Agreed the jokes are childish but they do crack a whip!

Let me sum up saying that Golmaal Returns is an OK film. But not half as brilliant as Golmaal. Now the makers are hinting at another sequel. Lets hope it lives up to the first one. The biggest letdown is the loose script & the poor content. Extra-marital affairs leading to chaos is something which we see in every 3rd or 4th movie in Bollywood.

Aamir Khan had once stated “There will not be another Rang De Basanti”. Absolutely right! You should not play around with good movies. Expectations are sky high and its almost impossible to meet them. There is a thin dividing line between improving an existing product and overdoing the original product & packaging it as a new one. Being a Chartered Accountant, I would like to apply the economic principle of the Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns – “The more a person has of a thing, the less he wants it”. Why give the audience too much of Golmaal? And yes, another suggestion from an economic perspective. Had the songs Tha kar ke & Meow been droped, maybe a couple of crores could have been shaved off from the budger.

I would suggest that wait for sometime and grab the movie on DVD once its out. Moserbaer is sure to release it at Rs 49. I spent 220 bucks on the ticket(not considering the pop corn & coke) and I regret it. Its another matter if this article is published, I ll be happy spending 220 on Golmaal Returns!

@Sourav, I think what Mihir is saying is: there is a difference between a movie where one leaves their brains on the side, and a movie where one leaves their brains on the side only to find it being cooked into a scramble. Golmaal Returns hence as per Mihir seems to fall in the later category.

ajay devgan cant do comedy. all his comedy movies have been accidental hits and not bcos of his efforts.
ishq – aamir did all the hardwork and made up for ajay’s bad comic timing
golmaal – arshad warsi, sharmaan joshi made ajay look good
sunday – irrfan khan and arshad warsi carried the movie
masti – well, ajay just happened to be there :)
he shud quit making comedies, its defintely not his cup of tea. he shud just be happy tat these movies did well and move on to better stuff

An absolutely crazy film. Do not miss. Taking the flimsiest of plots (’shaq’) and turning it into something this mad is applause worthy. Some really inspired, totally nonsensical dialogues. Sample this gem: ‘Jab mian biwi raazi to kya karega adivasi’.
Great acting from the whole cast. Tushar Kapoor, usually a bad actor, surprises you like never before. Shreyas is superb. Ajay Devgan seems he is enjoying doing comedies, not taking himself seriously at all, delivering a performance that is completely at ease.
