Rediff comes up with nice character sketches and sound bytes from the main actors in Gulaal.
Anurag Kashyap’s long-awaited Gulaal looks very promising, thanks to its ensemble cast and intense political story. Before it releases in theatres on March 13, we introduce you to the main characters, and the actors who play them.
Mahi Gill
Role: I play Madhuri, the mistress of Dukey Bana (played by Kay Kay Menon). She is a struggling actress and runs a beauty parlour. Since she loves acting and dancing, she does a mujra when Kay Kay tell us her. She is a bit eccentric. Thanks to Vasan for the tip.

for all the lazy people out there, here are some excerpts:
Jesse Randhawa
Role: I play Anuja, a college professor. I did not put any makeup for this role, and no great costumes — just a cotton sari. So it was very comfortable. I did not have to do much preparation, as I come from Rajasthan.
Piyush Mishra
Role: I play Prithvi Bana, Kay Kay’s elder brother. Prithvi has stayed in London in the 1970s and has been educated in Cambridge University. He is a great admirer of John Lennon. Living in London, he sees how progressive the world is. But when he returns to India, he finds his brother is still stuck in a small world, and has not progressed at all.
People like him. But since he is so liberal, he is under house arrest. So at home, he gets involved in theatre, composing and writing songs. He becomes insane towards the end.
Raj Singh Chuadhary
Role: I play Dilip Singh, who cannot stand up for himself. He cries at the drop of a hat. His parents mollycoddle him even though he is 28 years old. It’s this guy who realises that the college politics in his college is taking a big turn and getting dangerous now. This is also about his love story.
Abhimanyu Singh
Role: I play Ransa, a college student who leads a very secluded life. As the film progressed, his background is revealed. He comes from a very well-to-do family. Ransa represents today’s youth — he is very fearless, lives on the edge and does not take life seriously. At the same time, he is an idealist. His energy can be used for the good but Dukhi Bana uses it otherwise. That’s why he has grey shades.
Deepak Dobriyal
Role: I play Bhati, the right hand of Dukey Bana. He’s not a ‘yes man,’ he gives his opinion when he doesn’t agree with Kay Kay. But he always does what he’s been told, he never rebels against Kay Kay. I did not have to prepare for this role, as I’m like this in real life too — I’m very co-operative.
I was offered Gulaal when I was shooting for 1971. I had auditioned for Black Friday but did not get a role because Anurag had already cast his actors. Thanks to recommendation of Piyush Mishra and (1971 director) Amrit Singh, I bagged this role.
