Gulaal Reprise
I had just quit whatever I was doing till then and had taken a solemn oath of eternal poverty and struggle. Cinema…..Was writing for someone those days…..donno what happened to that script. We were having a narration…..half way thru we had a sutta brake. The person whom we were narrating was a reputed editor…..he mentioned “Gulaal ruk gayee…..this was Anurag’s last hope…”…Did not know him then…and never imagined I would ever be writing this…..
There are many films you wished you were a part of. Like I always wished I was a part of Dil Se.. donno why…the feeling for Gulaal was the same….when it was launched…..when it was stalled….always wished…I wanted to be a part of it. June 28, 2008 am in Jaipur, already into the 4th day of shoot.
Gulaal for me was the beginning of the most exciting Director-DOP combo in the industry…maybe after Guru Dutt – Murthy…..Anurag Kashyap-Rajeev Ravi….am in awe of this guy…what a man!! Usually DOPs are usually considered terrors….foul mouthed….mercurial…in comparison this man can be officially declared a SAINT. One of the fastest and the hardest working DOPs…..AK shoots at a frantic pace and shoots long….very long…..keeps mumbling instruction….like the Da Vinci code which people find hard to crack….but these two seem to just connect….have seldom heard anything else from Rajeev Sir but…. “ok….haan kar saktai….we can do it…..ready” it’s usually that fast from lets do it to ready for take….We know what mind blowing work he has done in No-Smoking…watch out for Dev.D, Pramod Bhai Teiss…and of course Gulaal.
Gulaal also brings back the deadly AK, KK and AS (Aditya Srivastav) combo. One should be on the sets to know what it is. KK was giving a shot last night. AK on the monitor….he seemed pretty ok with the shot and mumbled “CUT”…thankfully KK did not hear and went on…..and suddenly we realized where the scene was going…KK was belting it out…improvised and just let loose…..could see AK’s glee when the shot went on and even the camera did not cut….will mention what scene it was when Gulaal releases….
Aditya Srivastav is yet to join us but DEEPAK DOBRIYAL is here…effortless…..so smooth…almost like French (whatever that means) in front of the camera and a laugh riot off it…If KK can blow you with his powerhouse takes……Deepak just makes everything look so effortless…. This was his first major role before “Rajjo” of Omkara. A personal message to another KK (Kartik Krishnan)…I shot a scene with Deepak…I know I sucked and looked miserable…whatever….I acted with Deepak.
There is one man who is synonymous with Gulaal for us…..a mention of Gulaal must follow with his mention….Raja Choudhary. He has literally given his mind, soul and body for Gulaal. He plays Dilip Singh…..he is what the film is about….he is “yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai…” crux of the film. We love AK and want the world for him but more than anything else Gulaal should happen and be noticed “For Raja….” He has turned everything around I would say….Gulaal was a forgotten thing…..no one gave a chance of it happening again…..a very filmy thought but yes….agar kuch dil se maango to saari qayanat usse poora karneme jood jati hai…Universe Conspires…..it happened with Gulaal….and Raja takes the lions share for this turn around. A sweetheart. Wish all the success and recognition for him.
Kshipra is after our ass and wants us to take a bath and reach the sets on time….Neel is sleeping…Kshipra is strangling him…Neel refuses to move but thankfully the snoring has stopped……..more on Kshipra…Neel…Sanjay…Kunnu….Kalpesh….Ajay..Rakesh…Masroor…and many….
A terrible hang over….finished AK’s mehanga booze last night…(Sir Blue Label ko chua tak nahi haiJ) Kshipra is still screaming…Neel finally wakes up ….off to the sets….pics…I’ll try and add some in the next post.

If theres someone who needs all the unparalled recognition for his diversified work in films today in Indian Film Industry .. it has 2 b AK…. wow… only problem was that the article was wayyyyyyyy to short… would love to hear more… frankly i prefer ‘lengthy posts from the sets’ to ‘lots of pics from the sets’. really excited about gulal… btw wasnt Deepak Dobariyal roped IN PLACE OF Raja Chaudhary (if i am not mistaken, he is the guy who was there in NS at “You have just travelled a step forward in space-time…” in ‘phoonk de’, rite?)
Or was DD there in the initially as well?
And is the remaining cast same… and how are you coping with the continuity (regarding the age of chars) etc… or is it an entire film ka reshoot… already too many questions :)

so I’m prepared to wait too but please don’t give up on that film releasing or have it released on DVD/VCD..i promise to buy it for everyone i know ..there’s osian cinefan every year..i remember a post on imdb in which the person said that he/she watched paanch at osian..make it an annual thing like a section for unreleased etc..i beg the producer to get it out on piracy…the biggest pirated blockbuster of all time it would be…and will make every pirate the film’s distributer who’ll pay you % of the earnings…i mean what the heck…movie rental services…why not sell it here on pfc….
write the book that you havn’t read….make the movie that you havn’t seen…and then you can’t share it…the censor board made an abstract decision..and it sticks to it..then why do we still use reason..

hi VAASANJEE, sounds lovely.. KK AK AS(badshah bhai) and Rajajee and Deepak all together. Kshipra, Neel, Sanjee (thats how he pronounces his name) or 4 fingers maurya & Kunnu, reminds me of the best days of my ADing career,i.e. Black Friday. Plus Saint Rajiv Ravi & Kalpya & Appu Poser!!! really envy u guys. have fun & come back with a film that could possibly be one of anurags most honest & best films. finally HAAN! TOH THEEK HAI NA!

hey vasan, whatever u’ve written has actually arose a curosity, and i mean big time-curosity within me…i’m really looking forward to the film as well…
anyhow, yesterday i watched big lebowski…i loved it..i simply love tht film “hey dude”…lol and i also checked out Mumbai Cutting’s trailer on the net…it was actually to check oyt my bro..he’s in the project too in a film by ayush raina…anyhow, i think the kid was great in kashyap’s film..woh dakhan waali line sahi hain…dasooo line hai re…
