Guru’s Music

Guys, GURU hits the stands tomorrow.
While the reviews and responses have been mixed as is the case with all Rahman releases, this sure looks a winner, on the likes of Taal, Meenaxi & Iruvar.
Gulzar has again come up with his inimitable knack of picking commonly unused words and created magic(hairat, beswaadi)
There have been mentions of the detailed and never-before orchestration, visual quality and well-worked ‘mood’ of all the tracks.
I have been listening to its tracks since morning on a local radio channel premiere. Eagerly waiting to properly listen to all the tracks, and doing a detailed review, but here is a little bite from what I heard:
Aye Hairat-e-aashiqui(Hariharan, alka yagnik, AR Rahman, Aslam Mohammad): Vintage melody, Hariharan recreates classical magic, you can relish this one on a bright sunny morning, absolutely divine.
Ek lo ek muft(Bappi Lahiri, Chitra): i just heard this one once, but it sounds intriguing, bound to grow on multiple hearings. might even evolve to be the best track.Bappi rocks, never been used this way before.
Barso re(Shreya Ghosal, Uday Mazumdar): Shreya Ghosal teams up with Naveen(Flute) in this village funk, reminiscent of awaara bhawre, instantly catches on.
Tere bina(AR Rahman Chinmayee): the best song of the year. period.
Here is another detailed review and listing of tracks.

I have not heard Tere Bine – but it’s sung by A R Rahman, so it has to be the best. I have been dying to hear that song more than listening to the soundtrack. However, soundtrack of RDB has to be the favorite soundtrack of year 2006, for me
you know, a couple years back ‘Yeh Jo Des Hain Tera’ was my the favorite song; most played on my iTunes/iPod – it was the number 1 and I believed that no song would change that, but after hearing Roobaroo and Khoon Chala Yeh Jo Des Hain Tera slipped to number 3.
and i think, ‘tere bin’ could be the new number 1 song for me if the track is as good as the promo suggests.
this is what i like about a r rahman; one minute you think he can’t better this song or soundtrack and bang the next soundtrack just increases the bar.
HG, a friend of mine was working in ARR’s studio when the song was being recorded, and he said it had another version sung by Murtaza Qadir, the singer he normally uses for the qawwali kinda songa(piya hazi ali, zikr, al maddath maula), which sounded better than the present one. But may be its the fascination for Rahman’s vocals or what, I dont think there could have been a better rendition than the one I heard.
And I remember you saying that you like his vocals more
Guru might not be comparable to RDB, it was unique in its own league.
RDB tops my list too.
very true indeed. and the moment a new Rahman score comes, it feels like the best thing in the world, I cant help but think of it all the time. Its crazily addictive.
Khoon Chala remains my pick from RDB. What a song!
If there was a voice to a revolution, it would be Khoon Chala….
kuchh kar guzarne ko khoon chala khoon chala
aankhon ke sheeshe mein utarne ko khoon chala
badan se tapak kar, zameen se lipatkar
galiyon se raston se ubharkar, umadkar
naye rang bhar ne ko khoon chala khoon chala
khuli-si chhoT lekar,
badi si tees lekar ahista ahista
sawaalon ki ungli, jawaabon ki mutthi
sang lekar Khoon chala
kuchh kar guzarne ko khoon chala khoon chala
his voice is just sublime. his vocal in ‘Kabheem Neem Neem’ is just (i can’t find any big words to describe how good is that)- it makes me go mental like Lallan Singh was in Yuva. His singing always stands out even if it’s just a few words or… something like in ‘Kabhee Neem..’
his jugalbandi with Ustad Nusrat fateh ali khan in ‘Gurus of Peace’ is also a good one.
yup tushaar, Khoon Chala what a song! that guy (Mohit Chayhan from Silk Route Band) needs to do more singing. He had a couple of good songs in ‘Mein Meri Patni…’
Mohit Chauhan sings ‘dil se’, thats his strength, fully immersed in the emotion of the song. There is many more singers I am waiting for Rahman to team up with-Jagjit Singh, more work with lucky ali, daler mehndi, polly(euphoria), junoon etc. I look forward to whenever he makes these strides n teams up with pop artists n stuff, like his collaboration with ustad(timeless-gurus of peace), apache indian or remo.
i’m listening to tere bine now; i love a r rahman – that’s all i want to say. you gotta listen the whole track to appreciate it. the starting of this track does not get you hooked instantly, but after hearing it for first time you are bound to have the track on repeat mode!
if not then get yer ear checked! (only kidding)
wow, good that you listening to it after all that build-up
I still need to wait for another day or two i guess, these music shops suck.
aaand, just as I was writin this n gettin depressed, I see that the music is up on musicindiaonline!
m just wondering, is it just two of us that are excited about the music:-?
where the hell are all rahman fans :-w
yeah, i’m listening on musicindiaonline. it’s raining outside, so can’t be arsed to go out to buy the cd.
“Baazi Laga” – it does not sound like a A R Rahman track. It sounds more like a masala track. Perhaps it’s a situational track. Did not like it that much
“Barso Re” – It sounds like a south indian song. Flute is my favorite musical instrumental, so i think I will like this song.
“Ek Lo Ek Muft” – another situational track. I quite like the background music. It’s good. Got bit of that garba/dandiya feel to it. Got that bit of gujarati feeling – I like it
:d
even i am hooked to it. and i guess they might be having record hits at this moment(it also went down for some time and keeps goin down over and again-only the Guru page, HG, close your window so I can listen! :-t)
shit, i just saw naachgaana n was baffled to see so many reviews posted there.
as for me, i am just bowled over by yammo yammo, the beat is so infectious.
maiyya maiyya is very complex and up there with any standard of international recording.
baazi laga-not bad, but might be the weakest, has a yore feel to it.
wow, this has to be the richest rahman score ever, there is everything-indian classical, tamil melody, western, arabic, dandiya, qawwali….hoof!
Rahman sirji ^:)^
“Jaage Hain” – is a fucking masterpiece musical composition!!! even though it’s a bit of fusion between Khoon Chala and Jai Hind. the track is just awesome. A R Rahman has sung this!
“Maya Maryem” – it is a track that you will either hate it or love it. you will get a feeling that a r rahman has recycled it’s previous tunes and don’t get discourage from the starting cos the middle bit and the ending bit is just mindblowing!
Ey Harithe and Tere Bin are another masterpiece tracks from this album!
After hearing Baazi laga I thought :-?, but after hearing the soundtrack I’m like \:d/ it certainly got that situational, the era and gujarati feel it. i know some of you will say he has used his old tunes, but you gotta admit the outcome is quite good.
i have not said much about lyrics because my grasp of hindi is not that good and i am always in awe of gulzar’s lyrics. but i will say that you all gulzar fans will appreciate the lyrics of tere bina.there is a line which goes something like.. “..Kature Kateh, kateh na.. ”
so i will let tushar write about the lyrics and soundtrack in more depth
(i have not got this excited since music/film RDB was released!!!)
well i havent heard single song yet. can anyone provide links to listen online.
varun you can listen it at
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/hindi_bollywood/s/movie_name.8846
but don’t blame me if the songs dont play, the whole freakin world is tryin to listen to it i guess x(
even i am stuck like mad on that page for the last ONE hour!
thanks a lot tushar hope it works
Doesnt jaage hain resemble the old classic ‘Lag jaa gale’?
I liked the song anyways!
Is that song from Woh Kaun Thi? If so then I don’t seen any similarity between…
a r rahman’s high pitch.. catches you unnoticed….
you know, i heard the both songs together.. you know, you’re right. the starting of both song does resemble
I’ve waited so long for this album and it’s definitely worth the wait. I’m listening to Honhaar’s recommendation “Tere Bina” and its just utterly amazing. This guys voice gets under my skin perfectly. I think i’ve found my top 3 albums of the year.
