Guy Ritchie : Underrated Genius

guy-ritchieIntertwined storylines, eccentric , menacing and unforgettable characters, an ensemble cast, witty dialogues , a great OST and BGM, loads of attitude, hip and highly stylized direction are the hallmarks of a typical Guy Ritchie flick. And there is always a tight screenplay in the midst of it all which weaves all these elements together so neatly that one is often left wondering how the hell does he manage to do that?????

But compared to other film makers such as Quentin  Tarantino,  Christopher Nolan etc.  he is quite underrated IMHO. One will find a dozen blogs on Nolan, Tarantino etc praising their valuable contribution to cinema. But not many blogs or articles can be found on Ritchie.

Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

Lock,_Stock_and_Two_Smoking_Barrels

Vinnie Jones as 'Big Chris'

Vinnie Jones as 'Big Chris'

Guy Ritchie made a smashing debut with this film. The film centered around four low life protagonists ( Jason Statham & co.) who get entangled in a high stakes card game. Guy Ritchie uses snappy dialogues, fast pace, multiple characters , great dialogues, to give us a memorable movie experience. With this he established a definitive style of his, which he used to great effect in his other movies as well.

Ritchie should also be credited for introducing us to two of the most charismatic actors Jason Statham and ex-footballer Vinnie Jones. Vinnie jones is particularly memorable in his role as ‘Big Chris’ the hitman who takes his son ‘Little Chris‘ for some on the job training.  The film also  features a host of  other shady characters who represent a part of the seedy London underworld.

The film boasts of some great lines

Sample these

Jason statham and his cronies while planning a robbery

Eddie: “They’re armed.”
Soap : “What was that? Armed? What do you mean armed? Armed with what?”
Eddie : “Err, bad breath, colorful language, feather duster… what do you think they’re gonna be armed with? Guns, you tit!”

When Eddie(a mob boss ) threatens Harry (one of the protagonists)

You must be Eddie,

J.D.’s son.

You must be Harry.

Sorry, didn’t know your father.

Never mind, son.

You just might meet him

if you carry on like that.”

It is moments like these that make you want to watch the movie again and savour all of those moments.

Snatch (2000)

snatch_ver2

No write up on Guy Ritchie can ever be complete without the mention of Snatch. This was the film that showcased the true genius of Guy Ritchie. Once again it featured a number of crazy characters who are somehow connected in the common pursuit of an 86 karat diamond. Once again there are numerous parallel storylines which are interlinked together beautifully.Adding to the chaos was a cute pint sized pug who also plays an important role.

The film has two loser protagonists Turkish (Jason Statham) and Tommy ( Stephen Graham) two illegal boxing promoters who somehow get stuck in the midst of all this chaos. The film features some of the funniest, eccentric, colourful and memorable characters ever witnessed on screen. Who can forget Franky four fingers ( Benicio Del Toro), Bullet Tooth Tony ( Vinnie Jones), Boris the Blade, Brick Top (Alan Ford),  Tyrone and the greatest of them all Mickey ( Brad pitt). Of course, equal credit must also be given to these actors who perform their parts with utmost efficiency.

Brad Pitt as Mickey O'Neil

Brad Pitt as Mickey O'Neil

Brad Pitt steals the show as the incomprehensible boxing champion. Ritchie also uses the husky baritone of Statham to great effect who doubles up as the narrator for the film.

This film once again boasts of great dialogues in typical Guy Ritchie tradition

Turkish And Tommy’s introduction by Turkish

Tommy and Turkish

Tommy and Turkish

“My name is Turkish.

Funny name for an Englishman, I know.

My parents to be were on the same plane when it crashed. That’s how they met.

They named me after the name of the plane.

Not many people are named after a plane crash.

That’s Tommy. He tells people he was named after a gun, but I know he was really named after a famous 19th century ballet dancer.”

Mickey’s introduction by Turkish

“There was a problem with gypsies

You can’t understand

what’s being said.

Not Irish, not English

It’s just Pikey”

Turkish to Tommy referring to two boxers ‘Mad Fist’ and ‘The Gun’ who are dead

You aren’t exactly Mister Current Affairs are you, Tommy? “Mad Fist” went mad, and “The Gun,” shot himself.

But some of the best lines are reserved for Brick top

Brick Top

Brick Top

Brick Top to Tyrone and his cronies while threatening them

“Do you know what “nemesis” means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an horrible cunt… me”

Turkish to Brick top

Turkish : You take sugar?
Brick Top : No thank you, Turkish; I’m sweet enough

Turkish to Brick Top referring to Gorgeous George a Boxer who has been knocked down by Mickey

Tommy: We’ve lost Gorgeous George.
Brick Top: Well, where did you lose him? He ain’t a set of fucking car keys, is he?

Quite deservedly Lock, stock and Snatch find an honourable mention in the IMDB top 250 list. Another unique thing I’ve observed about ritchie’s direction is that he creates great black humour out of  the misfortune of the characters. You feel sorry for their plight but at the same time you can help but laugh at their misfortune. And almost all his films are centered around the London underworld.

During his marriage with Madonna, Ritchie also made a film with her in the lead called “Swept away”(2002) which was apparently a love story. It opened to extremely poor critical and audience reaction. So much that at many places it didn’t even receive a theatrical release and was released directly on dvd. Having not seen the film at all till date, I will refrain from further commenting on this movie.

Revolver (2005)

poster_Revolver_Poster_1

Guy Ritchie returned to direction with ‘Revolver’ which once again featured Jason Statham in the lead. The story is about Jake Green ( Jason Statham) who enters a deadly gambling game with an aim of taking revenge from casino tycoon Macha ( Ray Liotta).

The storyline may sound simple. But in terms of execution, this was a complete departure from Ritchie’s previous two films. He tried something really different with this film. Although  set again in the London underworld , this was quite a dark and complex thriller.  This can be inferred from the opening monologue of the film by Statham

“One thing I’ve learned in the last seven years:

In every game and con

there’s always an opponent, and there’s always a victim.

The trick is to know when you’re the latter, so you can become the former.”

Perhaps audiences and critics alike were not able to decipher the dark tones of the film as a result of which the film was unfairly panned and flopped at the box office. But a second viewing of the film will change all those perceptions. It took me two viewing to fully understand the film and appreciate the misunderstood genius of  Ritchie.

Rocknrolla (2008)

rocknrolla_galleryposter

Leaving behind the successive failures of his past two films, Guy Ritchie made a smashing return to form with Rocknrolla. Once again centered around the London underworld , it featured Gerard Butler and an ensemble cast featuring Thandie Newton amongst others. The film revolves around a bunch of shady characters vying for a valuable piece of real estate.

With a fast pace, snazzy music, uber cool characters, a pleasant twist towards the climax it enjoyed great success at the box office helping Ritchie regain his lost glory. Though not as great as his previous films, but it was still quite enjoyable.

If there was an award for the funniest and quickest sex scene , this film would win it hands down. Watch the love making scene between Butler and Newton and you’ll exactly know what I mean.

Sherlock Holmes – Official Trailer

This Christmas, Ritchie will be unleashing his version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s  Sherlock Homes. The film features Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude law as Dr Watson. Going by the promos, it seems top be quite promising. Hopefully , this will be another great addition to the filmography of Guy Ritchie. And hopefully, it will get a wide theatrical release in India unlike some of his previous films.

genius .. yes… under rated… not too sure man… quite honestly I can see him being touted high in maybe another 5-10 years… with only 4-5 films to his credit, it is not ususal that somebody would be easily accepted as the top bill rightaway, including the fact that none of his movies can be called like “a 100% audience movie” (mummy papa chunnu monnu movies like James Cameroon’s Titanic or even Nolan working on the comic character for all generations) … despite that Guy Ritchie is already on the big leagues, and generally the hatke director are given the big token only after certain time has passed by… GR has spent I guess close to only 10-11 years in foray… so … Under rated … would not be my comment on him …. GENIUS!!! YESSIR!!!!

Agreed. Underrated No way. The acceptance will increase only if he directs more movies like forthcoming Sherlock Holmes otherwise he’ll be there to be discovered by the serious cine-lovers only.
The directors after making the movies of their choice, telling the story they want to, move to more mainstream stuff to increase their market value and acceptance. Bryan Singer, Nolan, Aronofsky (in process) have done so. Ritchie hasn’t.

His screenplays are unique in their treatment and substance, agreed; but Guy Ritchie hasn’t worked outside the Brit-gangster genre yet, has he?
Isn’t variety(in the basic sense of the word) supposed one of the true measures of genius? For e.g.> someone like Tim Burton who always drags a Gothic cloak behind him manages to sustain audience interest because of his astonishing imagination. He’s written/directed films ranging from animation(Corpse Bride) to Comic-book Superhero(Batman) and from Biography drama(Ed Wood) to spoof-horror(Beetlejuice). All his works fall within the wider definitions of the genre that haunts him/ or he haunts.
THAT, my friend, is the true mark of a genius.

Hey Aditya 101% Im agreeing with ur write-up.
I was also thinkin about it for quite sometime now,why isnt any write-up about this in PFC!
Or is it me the only one who feels so?No and i found someone else too, now.

Ritchie has got a unique talent when it comes to telling stories about lowlife-darkshaded-witty characters.
And the way he plans and uses his shots, paced n stylish editing, perfect BG scores, icing on the top humour;all i have to tell is nothing except one word BRAVO!
Whether its Lock Stock or Snatch or Rock nRolla or Revolver nobody can equal him when it comes to stylish-ing a movie.

While Lock Stock and Snatch/RocknRolla was talking the stories of the London underworld,Revolver was kind of a spiritual attempt which i wasnt expecting at all from Ritchie and was a shock too.But it had Ritchie written all over it whien it comes to the style of its craft!

Ritchies movies are great answers when someone asks u:
“How to make a movie interesting?”

Ritchie is a sheer talent in writing and directing with no doubts.
And words are shorter in describing this genius director who keep on entertaining us with his genius products.
But like the title of this write-up says i also have felt many times Ritchies genius is underrated.

Waiting eagerly for HIS take on Sherlock Holmes.
And I am happy that the wait is over by this Dec 25th..

Aditya, for a cinema to be successful, talking of dark undertones is not the only criteria na… here is one movie that everybody is going to watch, undertones or no undertones… you also have to see through the post that I am not just talking of Indian families, where a lot of Papa Mummies may not have had the chance to read Batman… but say in US, UK and areas, Batman is a part of growing up… you are in to see the movie irrespective of the age… once the director is accepted in his domestic circuit is when he is going to acclaimed internationally as well, which worked big time for Nolan…. if cinematic undertones is all that has to make a director successful and billed as a top one, then the Following Memento Insomnia were good enough the Prestige and the Batman series were not needed… the first 3 got him talking in the cinema watching circles, but you get the top bill, only when you are able to get all kinds of audience in, and at the same time appeal to everybody and then you also pass the undertones to all who can get it… there are going to be people who can watch this movie for the undertones and at the same time not have it ever in the back of their minds if they take their families with them while going for the ’super hero’ movie… the very reason why Nolan is applauded today is cuz Batman series achieved what a lot of other super hero movies could not, attract audiences of all kinds and at the same time leave that strong vibes up your head…

          • Compare the batman franchise prior to Nolan and other superhero films like spiderman, superman. I agree with you on many points. But no matter what one may say, you cant deny that Btaman begins and The dark knight has the distinct Nolan touch. no matter how much ever commercial it may feel. Batman has a quite dark theme compared to other superhero stories. Noaln was perfectly able to capture that. Prior to him only Tim Burton created that feel to an extent. And he also thankfully didnt concentrate much on the OTT sets and gagdets which marred Batman and robin and batman forever. He re-invented the batman franchise , which was decaying prior to his batman films. That is the reason why he was bale to attract all kinds of audiences for batman. And the prestige was also deintely not like any regular hollywood flick.

Perfectly agreed Aditya… and this is what I am suggesting as the reason to Nolan being a top notch director is that he made a movie, which brought out audience of all kinds…. before watching the Nolan’s batman series nobody expected them to have a darker deeper mode… but the movie was anticipated any which ways… the audience target was huge… once audience got into the hall the darker deeper mode, brilliantly executed by Nolan, turned on …. the differnce between say a Batman and even Prestige is that Batman… deep or non deep would ve anyday garnered audience… just the way any super hero movie does… it automatically brings in every kind of crowd…. that you can watch with friends, alone, family, anybody, the same happened with all the tacky superheros movies that happened before Batman series including Masters of the Universe … because the protagist is HUGE… In case of Spiderman, Sam Raimi had a huge chance to make a great movie, cuz Stan Lee had already created a character which was a superhero with the human flaws and insecurities… the movie was a hit, but Sam Raimi was not all that much populat…here is where Nolan showcased his talent, he not only got his audience but also showed what makes his league a different one and the wider audience accepted him as a top notch guy…

FYI… never bother about spellings with me…. I end up eating words, misspelling them to mean something else and what not…. :lol …

    • The reason i said under rated is because when movie goers see some swift cuts, sharp editing and a film which is dark and has black humour, it is mostly compared to tarantino’s films.
Like Kaminey, it was compared by most of the people to pulp fiction. But if you observe closely it had more similarities with Snatch. Remember the Guitar case filled with cocaine?? And how everyone is after it?? Sumthin similar to the situation in snatch. If one has to mention Tarantino, i guess True romance directed by Tony scott would be more apt ( For which Tarantino had written the script). It also centered around a suticase full of cocaine found by a newly married couple.

agreed again …every bit of Kaminey had similar situation, character introductions, casualness and effortlessness on gory scenes with music or inane humor of Snatch … Why Tarantino – cuz one the dan ta dan had a very strong pulse similar to pulp fiction title… 2 Tarantino has been in the business too long…. his narratives have 6 stories parallely going on each broken into a story altogether… Snatch somewhere had all these elements slished slashed in a different pattern altogether, which was brilliant (even lock stock had similar characters all around finally coming together, but Snatch was KICKASS BRILLIANT STUFF)…. though somewhere for a lot of folks who would ve been seeing QT movies for long patterns of multiple characters coming together would ve stuck as QT…. I guess Anurag K had mentioned Paul Greengrass… personally I havent seen any movie from PG …. but for all I know if they are better that Pulp Fiction and Snatch, then I might feel that guy is even more under rated…

You cannot blame the dearth of good dialogue writers on our sensitivity as audience. Satya was a gaali-fest and yet the dialogues were hard hitting, so were the dialogues spoken by Mohanlaal in Company – no gaalis or provocation.

abuses were more of an example of how it is difficult to write even and everyday lingo in hindi cinema… getting some good dialogues and still keeping it at a point of everyday talk is getting tougher by the day with everything raises concerns…. something like Bombay Mumbai unnecessarily … its getting tougher by the day to write one simple line that you dont have second thoughts about…a couple of days back Kurbaan was the raging fire, which had a dialogue “bhaijaan ko chodo toh sab ke haathon kuraan pakda de” … Syed Munis, felt that this was a dangerous statement, Quran can easily be replaced by Hathyar and thats what it means… and can’t blame him, the hawa these days due to media constantly keeps such thoughts on top of the indian heads…

The other issue that we have also had in hindi cinema is, there are quite a lot good lookers non actors or the star kids… and for good dialogues you need a good orator as well… apne yahaan you gotto have six packs, bhale hi you may not know how to talk… its not only a dearth in our dialogue writing but also dialogue orating skills which are lacking…

unless our heros continue to talk in hinglish like a Wake Up Sid or JTYJN, or dil pyar mohabbat talks, we are going to find it lil tough unless we decide to have some good heros… however non good looking they might be…

To elaborate it more…it’s not entirely about the abuses but as someone once said on this forum that it is difficult to make a pulp fiction (I dont like it though) in India because here people may laugh on others but they take a joke about them too seriously. It’s kind of restricted environment which hinders creativity. Here you write dialogues with such a frequent use of a slang related to a particular community (like ‘nigger’ in PF) and you may risk a ban on the movie.

I agree with you both, PS and Jahanpanah. Actually while watching the cricket match today, I was thinking the same – why can’t we have scenes in our movie where the characters are talking about cricket like the people at pan shops do? Not the analytical talks of the newschannels but everyone has an opinion about one and another thing, and we can easily create amazing conversations around those passionate opinions.

But we would end up stepping on someone’s toes for everything we show in our movies – the more layman, the worse. And that is why we hardly have conversations in the movies. (Two entirely conversation based films that come to mind are Before Sunset and Sunrise, my oh my!!)

Here conversations are used only for one purpose:
to introduce the lead characters to viewers or to introduce and move the story forward. But there are many other things happening in the characters life that is all left behind and that is the main difference we all find in almost all great international flicks and our running-around-the-tree ones!
Exceptions can be pointed out though few,as u said Farhans flicks got many of that moments,Black Friday ,Dev D etc.
But have to differ about JWM,such a trash!
Any day Socha Na Tha to JWM..!

aditya thats wat i said in my comment most of the aam junta including the media dont know much abt guy ritchie .may be in this country he is under rated but not in the world.he is one of the best filmmakers of this genre, even slumdog millionaire has razor sharp editing like ritchie movies.and kaminey is an indian movie so people who compare it to pulp fiction most of them have heard of QT so its easy for them.consider this i have a friend who is a film student but he has never heard of tarantino or ritchie so cant help it.but i hope ritchie can cross boundaries with his new movies and gets more fame.
