how were the nominaions arrived at and who did the shortlisting?
and why only Hindi cinema? why not make it all-India? we already have so many other so-called ‘awards’ for Hindi cinema, and adding one more, however credible, won’t make any difference to the cacophony of ‘i’m the best (award)’ – or will it?
PFC and Tehelka both are platforms for people who want to read beyond the cliched…so why this cliched thing about only Hindi films…is it because Hindi cinema is ‘pan-Indian’ and others are not?
Utpal, it is something we are working on and hopefully we will have that from next year. Have updated the post regarding how we have arrived to final nominee list.
I have already voted. its a beginning, and maybe as Utpal says, the next effort might be pan-Indian. the nominations maynot have been democratially chosen, but then all the nominations make sense to me.
from a usability perspective..please make it clear that the user needs to click on vote for each category rather than only once at the end..
i did that and then realised that i need to press vote for each category
i like this polling feature
Awesome….
many of my favorites didn’t make it though….
First time, i voted for an awards thing in my life. So wud the awards be given out at a function, and telecast. Or would the results be published directly in the media.
i voted! May the best one win!
This initiative by PFC and Tehelka is a great one.
All the luck.
Great initiative & I’m sure its just the start of something that turns out to be a huge thing in the future!!!
I have the same questions as Utpal. On what basis was this shortlist arrived at? I was surprised not to find Ranvir Shorey listed in the Best Actor category for Mithya. IMO that was the performance of the year!
Aditya,

To make each and everyone happy, we could/should have had 10 nominees per category :-D
Umm… I share Aditya’s disappointment on Ranvir’s exclusion. The lead performance of the year, IMO.
Why isn’t Ranvir Shourie there in Best Actor’s category for Mithya? Who decides the nominations? Karan Johar?
Adiya/Jahan,
Ranvir didnt get enough votes. 1. The nominees would be selected by a jury comprising members from PFC and Tehelka.
Some of my choices were not shortlisted…
How can u miss
Tushar Kapoor for Golmaal returns
SRK for the Best Scene
& y didnt Dostana feature anywhere?
U guys don’t understand Cinema!
Vote daal diya !! any chance of having results by “name” ?
Done…
Why isn’t Wednesday included in the best film category?
competition bada tight hai..lekin i was hoping to see Ranveer Shorey’s name in Lead actor category for Mithya..come on now folks!!
RNBDJ itni buri thi kya? Welcome to sajjanpur!!!
voted….
Nice work. Voted

No Nomination for Ranvir in Mithya? Best perf of the year for me( with Naseeruddin Shah in ‘A Wednesday’ being a close second’).
Nominations are pretty much perfect except one or two things as has been pointed out…
But not sure about the music awards…ARR should have been nominated for JA & not JTYJN…also there were many other songs that could have been considered for best singer awards…& yes Wednesday should have been one of the nominees for best film…considering that you have Aamir which is said to have been influenced by one Philipino movie…
BTW dunno why some ppl r yearning abt disgraceful movies like Golmaal Returns & RNBDJ…:P:P:P
Guys, Ranvir seems to be a popular choice in the comments section. Good to see that. But, unfortunately the jury panel on this board did not agree on it collectively. Ranvir missed out by a whisker. Seeing the passion here for Ranvir, i guess he would have won hands down :-).Also, it is a darn difficult choice to pick just five, someone has to loose, someone has to win.
Nominations are a breath of fresh air after having watched Abhishek being nominated in the best actor category and Tushar in the best supporting actor category in the popular awards. However this year the best actress category was the least competitive and best supporting actress category would be the toughest one to choose(Shahana,Ratna,Shabana,Ila arun….OMG!!!)..Well I have voted..Best of luck guys.
no ashutosh gowariker nom
Voted
. Dont know much technical details (editing etc) and havent even seen all the movies nominated. But what the hell
.
Done. Good job HG.
lol Neetu Chandra and Asin for Best Actress? Surely there were better performances?
faraaz..Wouldnt it be better for you tell what would your choice be rather than just banishing this list? Anyone can say..blah blah and followed by lol!! What would you have given your choices if you were a part..and mind you..we are talking about 5..five..choices here!!
Phew!!! Finally a list that is slightly better thn the rest!!! But…but…but….as its inevitable…i have my disagreements too…major ones….
1.) How come there are Neetu Chandra & Asin but no Kajol (U, Me aur Hum)??? (I couldn’t vote only for this catagory)
2.) How come Farhaan(Rock On) & Ranvir Shorey(Mithya) couldn’t find any place???
3.) Whats this fixation abt JODHAA AKBAR??? I guess ROCK ON is a far better attempt!!! Its criminal to ignore Abhishek Kapur this year!!!
I really hope that these awards become as unbiased as it can be…and don’t ignore good mainstream cinema in the effort of encouraging small films…
All the best!!! Cheers!!!
Also…do add some more categories from next year please…there must be -
A) Best Debut (Direction)
B) Best Debut (Writing – Story, Screenplay,Lyrics)
C) Best Debut (Acting- Male / Female)
This shall give the necessary encouragement to the new crop that comes out with flying colors in that particular year!!!
I have high hopes from u guys!!! Good initiative HG!!!
so what happens now that we’ve voted? would the winners be getting a proper award from PFC? do we get to see the winners on PFC?
Faraaz: You are right. How did they even miss Kate Winslet from The Reader? LOL!!
HG: Great job. Voted!
Done.
a major disappointment — sukhwinder singh’s haule haule …. it is beyound doubt the most faboulous singing and song of the year .. as per me
Om – Sure sir..I can list some of the performances that I thought deserve more acclaim and appreciation than those of Asin and Neetu Chandra in Ghajini and OLLO respectively
Tisca Chopra – Firaaq
Kajol – U, Me Aur Hum
Ila Arun – Jodha Akbar
Preity Zinta – Heaven on Earth (if it can be considered)
Firaaq will be a 2009 release. The film did a few festivals round last year but it is going to get a theaterical release this year. Hence, it wasn’t considered. General public haven’t seen the film. Same goes for Heaven On Earth – and I am not sure if that is a Hindi film. Is it?
At last nominations that make sense.unlike the so called “commercial” award ceremonies where pritam is nominated for his music in Singh Is King(or is it Kingg or Kinng, whatever?) and Race. And Bips is nominated for Bachna Ae Haseeno!!Thank God we dont see Dostana and RNBDJ in the list..
But why was Jane Tu’s screenplay overlooked.I think the screenplay with cowboys and dead father talking rocked.neways great job guys.Cheers
great job HG! You pulled through!
.
Voted!
@Faraaz..so you come up with four nominees with two of the films not yet “released” adn one(Illa arun) who is cast in a supporting role. So, sir, believe people when they say, this year did not see any female actor break shackles or made us open our eyes for her performance!
Wow! Kudos to Hg and everyone involved. Great job guys! Will vote in a day or two..!
Done!
I’m stunned that MITHYA was nominated for so many categories but Ranbir Shorie — the life and soul of the film was not on the ballot! Easily the Performance of the year for me.
Good effort. Voted.
@ Vee : I just voted at the MovieManiax Awards too. Good initiative, especially from the bloggers. and I feel most of the nominations here are very similar to the ones that you guys have put together !
Thanks for the opportunity guys.
*
This process has highlighted how subjective films can be for us. It’s tough to keep everyone happy.
*
Like others I was surprised to see Ranvir Shorey left off the ballot for Best Actor. It was a complex character and he brought it across brilliantly. Would have got my vote for sure.
*
Same with Kajol for “U Me Aur Hum”, it was a risky character that could have been overplayed, but she’s a veteran and it showed. She gave the character grace and class and that went a long way with audiences sympathizing with her situation. Thought that was more deserving that Neetu Chandra in OLLO, just my humble opinion.
*
Again, the effort is appreciated as is the transparency in the process.
*
Also wanted to comment on why I think the Pan-India concept for these awards won’t work. Too many of us are not exposed to all of the great regional cinema. Some of us may have seen a brilliant Telegu film but missed an equally brilliant Bengali or Marathi film. At least with Hindi cinema we know exposure isn’t an issue.
*
Someone also asked about “Heaven on Earth”. It’s a Canadian film, directed by Deepa Mehta and stars Preity Zinta (she won the Silvery Hugo award for Best Actress at the Chicago International Film Fest).
*
Here’s a great review from the Vancouver Sun newspaper.

only cinematography and editing in the technical awards…what abt the others ? sound design, Vfx, costume, production design etc etc ??
@Tony bhai..ref to comment#50..Bingo
The juries on this board are from around the globe and not just from one country where all Hindi movies release, it becomes really difficult to keep them all together and get a list. Some might not have seen some beautiful movies which were really small budget and hence didnt get a nationwide release, forget worldwide.
Similarly, it is very difficult to bring justice to Pan-India concept..
what about nominations in other technical categories like sound, vfx, costume, production design etc etc…presently there are nominations just for cinematography and editing.
It’s criminal to not include Ranvir Shorey for Mithya! He is the winner, hands down!! It was THE performance of the year!!
Bull Shit. This is no diffrent from Filmfare & Other shit/ Aishwarya Rai, Amrita Rao. Priyanka.
Hey how come there’s no award for best debutant?
great! but my top 3 films dint make it to Best Film….. Rock On,Mumbai Meri Jaan and Jaane Tu…
although it has been a difficult and mixed-bag type year for the movies…
so doesnt my fav performance .. Kay kay Menon for Shaurya.. :(
I am glad MITHYA is in the list…..I was more partial to OLLO & Mithiya…. :-D
Way to go…..Waiting for the results..Kudos to Tehelka
At least, Mithya made it to this one. Seriously underrated film that deserves more accolades than it has got so far. And Ranvir Shoray should have been up there in the Lead Actor nominations too.
I felt that screenplay of Aamir was much better than that of WTS and A Wednesday. It was excellently crafted. Happy to see that Aamir has got lots of nominations in other categories.
Voted, but not for all categories as all 5 nominees do not deserve my vote.
@ Ken (55): Thanks for the link!! Yes, that list seems wider and perhaps even better!!
We want to VOTE FOR “A WEDNESDAY” for best film..
Vox populi rulez
Tough choices all the way…. but I think “Oye Lucky” deserves to win for Best Film…
Where is the nomination for A Wednesday in the best film category? It was better than most who got nominated
no ranvir in best actor category…..? no mmumbai meri jaan in best film category….? but agar aap vote nahi kar rahe to aap so rahe ho…. vote daal diya
No Tahaan in cinematography or in any other category….i wanted it towin some awards and accolades, honestly we r gettin a ltle bit partial towards dibanker, anurag, jaideep etc, agreed aamir is a good movie but missin out on tahaan is criminal
I am not a regular on PFC…but I really enjoy some of the posts heartily. I am a diehard Cinema buff..but I guess my tastes are far tooo universal to match the taste of the majority here. I mean I enjoy the ocassional thoughful and hatke movies(nowadays its not occasional any more..which is refreshing as well)..but I also enjoy my mainstream so called Actor ruled bollywood movies. I found it difficult to vote in a few categories, but I did just as well.
I dont know why this fixation with Aamir…. which was to me a very over hyped movie …totally confused ..till the end it is not clear that why that particular man was selected to carry out the bomb thing..
This is very unfair that you have combined story, screenplay and dialogues as one nomination.
And why ranvir shorey wasnt nominated for the best actor?
