There is a movie called “Tickets” made by Abbas Kirostami, Paul Laverty and Ermanno Olmi. Three brilliant directors from different lands. Speak different languages who directed the three intervening stories. They had translators on the sets and all the actors came from different ethnic backgrounds and spoke, naturally, various languages. But the end result – a visually and emotionally stunning film that transcends all barriers, language and others.
Is it wrong if the actors or directors don’t speak Hindi. The present generation does not think anymore in their native language anymore. They think in english so when faced in a situation, say an interview, where they have to express themselves, they shift to the language in which they think. Does that make them less of an actors?
Mohanlal, I am guessing knows passable hindi. Was he not out of the world in Company? Kota Srinivas Rao, Selva Mani in Sarkar, is a mind blowing actor in Telugu who I know knows very little hindi. Am sure you took a fancy at for his work. There are loads like that…
My point is this, yes its Hindi film industry but we speak a zillion languages. Only Manoj Bajpai and Aushutosh Rana are capable hindi actors? Yes, capable, not the only.

Whats really disgusting is that we have all these film awards ceremonies which are on the lines of the Oscars being compered in English. It feels totally wierd. I cannot digest SRK compering in English and dishing our kind of Indian jokes. Are Hindi me bolna !!!!

All Italians speak with an Italian accent …Irish with an Irish one…..common sense tells you its most normal for us to speak English with an Indianised accent. :-) magar nahi… Harivanshrai ji ki bahu ko bahut sharam aayi and madam painted all the US channels red with her totally fake accent.
Idhar US mein ppl watch movies like KANK and Neal and NIkki and think every Indian woman is strutting her stuff in bra like tops and mini skirts. Reality is more like the world portrayed in Namesake by Irfan and Tabu.

There are some people who are not from Hindi belt and its ok for them to use English or whatever medium they choose.
But I hate those people who know they want to be actors and who live and die as Hindi actors but refuse to learn or speak in Hindi. Its that utter disregard to your own language that make them act this way.
One reason could be that they want to project an image of being Sofisticated and they think by speaking English they can project that but not by their thoughts. Another reason could be most of them ape/copy everything from west, be it styles, clothes, the way they talk and everything. I have also heard some who just copy and say word to word in the interviews what the hollywood actors have said in their interviews for similar questions.
Mind you this only happens in Hindi Industry…not in any other regional industry …except for the imported actors in reginal industry, like say a North Indian born actor/actress working in Tamil/Telgu/Kannada/Malyalam movies.

Very well said about Award shows. Why dont they compere it in Hindi. I think a Raju Srivastav is far better than a SRK hosting a show in Hindi and entertaining us rather than listening to odd jokes that loose its charm after translation.

Such a beautiful language, which can lead to such wonderful word play. Its being wasted though. I mean, aside from the rare “In dino” from Metro, where are the beautiful, poetic lyrics which have the ability to deeply affect us? Yet there was a time where such lyrics were integral to our cinema. Now, we get shit like “We are the bhais” and “shake your ass” and all… such a loss.

aajkal zyaadatar filme aur unke stars multiplex ya NRI audiences par focus karte hai, aur yeh baat unke story ideas, dialogues aur interviews mein dikhti hai. joh aam janta filme dekhne jaati hai us par koi dhyan nahi deta, which is really sad. Dheere-dheere hindi filmo se hindi gayab si hoti ja rahi hai, jaise KANK mein kuch bahut hi imp scenes mein english dialogues the!!
Ravptor, perhaps you are not aware of the deep love and affection that Iranians have for their language. Trust me if Kiarostami was not a fluent speaker of Farsi he would lose all credibility as a director of Iranian films.
However, I do see the merit of your argument. One of my favourite films is the screen adaptation of Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose” directed by the French director Jean Jacques Arnaud. A French director, directing an English film based on an Italian novel – cannot get any more polyglot than that.
But what Ajay’s discussing is the hypocrisy of condescending to the Hindi language while depending on it for one’s livelihood. At least Katrina, Upen and Sridevi have a very legitimate excuse for not speaking Hindi.
What is the excuse for folks like Aishwarya Rai, Shiney Ahuja, Bipasha Basu (she grew up in Delhi), to not be able string together a single coherent sentence in Hindi?
Reminds me of a scene from Umar Sharif’s “Bakra Qishton Pe” where Moin Akhtar reveals that his real name is Ilyas not Anand Kumar, and he’s Pakistani, not Indian. Umar looks him up and down and says –
