Home Delivery: Aapko… Ghar Tak

Director: Sujoy Ghosh
Written by: Sujoy Ghosh
Actors: Viveck Oberio, Boman Irani, Ayesha Takia, Mahima Chaudhry, Juhi Chawla, Karan Johar, Shaurab Shukla
Music by: Vishal and Shehkar
Year 2005

Apparently this movie was classified as the worst movie of year 2005, as it did not click at the box office and was heavily criticized by the critics. I have seen Home Delivery at least five times and yet I have not found a flaw in this movie. I did not think it was buckvaas. I did not think it was okay. I did not think it was good. I thought it was brilliant.

Home Delivery is about Sunny Chopra (Viveck Oberio), who is a lazy git, a compulsive liar, and gyan guru(agony aunt). He has to complete writing a script for Karan Johar in a day. Juhi Chawla is after him as he has been taking sick from work. Sunny’s girlfriend Jenny(Ayesha Takia) wants to get married, where as he does not. And he loses the plot when he meets the sensational Maya (Mahima Chaudhry) - she is playing a hot South Indian Film actress and Sunny adored her in his teen-hood. So, his popat takes over his body and mind, and he invites her over his flat. Then he has a rift with his girlfriend Jenny. Michael (Boman Irani), a senile old pizza delivery guy enters into Sunny’s life. Does he make it worst for Sunny or does he help him out? You will have to watch the movie to find that out.

The scenes that will stick in your mind:

1) The Rawalpindi Scene

2) Boman Irani’s first scene

3) Sunny and Jenny photographs scene.

4) The fight between Boman and Viveck

5) The starting scene.

6) The interview.

This was Sujoy Ghosh’s second venture after “Jhankaar Beats” and “Home Delivery” is better than the former movie. Technically wise Home Delivery is far stylish than Jhankaar Beats - that just shows what a good budget could do to the look of a movie. There were too many speical appearance in this movie, but it was well incorporated in the story. Also the side-track comedy did not make one lose the interest in the movie.I do not find anything wrong with his writing or direction. It is always hard to make a simple/natural story work, but he convincingly handles the subject excellently. He has gone a notch up with this movie. And hopefully he will continue going with his next movies. He should not be disheartened from the Home Delivery’s failure and I hope he carry’s one making film he believes in.

All we know that Viveck Oberio is one talented guy and after Company he has not got anything to show off. But in Home Delivery he is naturally brilliant. I would go as far as saying that after Company this is his best work. His facial expression, dialogue delivery were spot on. Boman Irani - the get up did not look convincing, but ignoring that he will make you laugh, like he always does. I just can’t find any flaws in his acting. And you add Shaurab Shukla to the equation.. the answer is infinity. Ayesha Takia does not have much to do in this movie but her acting is spotless. To be honest, I am a bit biased… I like her, I love her voice, I just like her. She is just one amazingly awesome actress. Mahima Chowdry - she did look hot - she was good at seducing people.

And the last comment I would like to make on Vishal/Shekar. The duo gave so many hit soundtracks after Jhankar Beats but I did not like any of those soundtracks that much. Where as I think the soundtrack of Home Delivery is soulful and pleasing.

i completely second ur views….i can say upto the extent that its one of the best comedies in Indian cinema..guess our junta could not relate wid the intelligent humor…that “kyaa ma…..” sequence in the movie still brings sly smile to my face..juz too good..pity such films nvr wrk

    @oz

i haven’t seen HD yet, so can’t comment on it as a movie, but i can definitely comment on vivek. post-company, the man made me have huge expectations out of him, and so far, he’s let me down each and every time, the latest being in omkara. it’s becoming easier by the minute to predict his facial expression during a scene.. sad scene: eyebrows arch, two flutters of the eyelid. happy: slow smile which looks forced, hesitate a second, then expand to a full-blown smile. i’m still willing to give him a chance though… let’s see how he does in shootout at lokhandwala..

    Sammy,

Perhaps our junta does not get highly intellectual movies, but HD was not that difficult to understand. Maybe they just did not get the director’s sense of humor.

    Oz,

Is ‘gangajal’ the word you looking for?

    Striker,

you should see the movie, you will appreciate Viveck in the movie.

  6. striker on September 29th, 2006 9:27 am

yup, have already put it on my italkies queue.. oz, if not gangaajal, nectar..?

  7. sumeet on September 29th, 2006 10:07 am

@ HG Good for you.. you liked it. But i just couldnt sit thru the whole movie.. i had to quit watching it after 30 mins..

  8. oz on September 29th, 2006 10:12 am

    - HG/Striker, Nector/Gangajal yup! Just goes to show that there is always an audience for a movie. Though the movie was outrightly rejected this is the first time I found someone appreciating it. HG good for you that you liked it. I personally did not connect with this one. I thought the scenes just dived into themselves in self indulgence. After about 10 minutes, I kept hitting the fast forward button every 2 minutes.

i sort of connected with the characters, hence me liking it a lot. i kind of prefer this kind of simplistic/realistic movies a lot. you know like Khatta Meetha, Baton Baton Mein,…

i even liked socha na that.

I think i know many ppl who loved this movie..for its hatke humor..but like oz said 1 man’s elixir is other man’s posion….for record i didnt lyk Jhankar beats much..humor in HD was more subtle than the former one

  11. Honhaar Goonda on September 30th, 2006 12:11 am

exactly. the humor was not loud or one-line jokes - it was the story that just makes you laugh. and also there was a bit of spoof in the film.

I liked only the last 15-20 mins or so. The others part of the movie was just not happening. Take the first 30 minutes of the movie. It takes place in Vivek’s apartment. For whole 30 minutes. Its not a play. Its a movie. You have to give them new scenes. 30 mins and the movie still stuck there. I may be wrong about 30 mins but it did feel like 30 mins.

Anyway. I like Sujoy’s Jhankar Beats much better. It was a breed apart for sure

it was stuck in his apartment for a some time, but there were varied scenes in that time. from the starting scene to rawalpindi scene, then he went for interview,…

i liked jhankar beats as well but if I go by your theory - it also did not have a film factor to it. Did it?

    HG

Well! You have promted me to see the movie again. I need to find this DVD. Some of my friends may be having it but it would be deep down in the heap.

I agree that HD was different in terms of treatment and story telling but then it did not strike something like Jhankaar did. Also Rahul Bose and Sanjay Suri were too good and made the movie a must watch. If you see Vivek in HD, it leaves much too be desired. He was the same like “Kyon, ho gaya na?” Thats another pathetic movie to say. If I would give a 10 to Jhankar, i would give a 4 to HD.

But again, let me find the DVD and see it the way you saw it.

Jhankar Beats had it’s flaws as well; like the pairing of Shyam and Rimi - their acting was just average, and were you happy with the climax?

to be honest, i did not find anything wrong with Vivek’s acting, in fact, i liked it. Also Boman Irani was in HD - He was priceless in the movie.

Out of Jhankar Beats and Home Delivery - the latter is more of an accomplished film by Sujoy.

HG.. as per my promise, i watched HD last night.. it started off REALLY slow.. i had to resort to having my laptop while watching it. even between emails and checking PFC, i had no trouble following the story..

performances first, ayesha was her usual cute self.. seeing her smile reminds me of the colonial cousins song “something about the way you smile”.. very cute. vivek didn’t blow me away.. he was passable. he still looked forced to me in some places.. boman was good ol’ boman. injecting a worthwhile performance in the stupidest of roles. and damn.. i didn’t know mahima could look that good!

as far as story goes… it isn’t engaging by any means. it’s funny in parts, but it’s not a funny movie. case in point, rawalpindi or vivek’s imaginary moments and songs with mahima (or when he drops her in the song). the comedic moments seemed forced at points, but i did enjoy vivek being trapped inside the glass, which alluded to his relationship with ayesha.. “hatke” humor for sure, and glad sujoy was able to explore it in this, since you don’t get to see it enough.

i’ll agree with punds.. the last half hour or so was definitely watchable. i really liked the happy diwali song :) overall, an ok movie, and not AS bad as i expected it to be.. i wouldn’t watch it again though.

so far i have seen Home Delivery at least five times. the only bit annoys me is that PP3 guy bit, otherwise i just love the movie.

thank god, i’m not the only one who thinks Ayeshia Takia is a cutie - I love her voice.

yes, the story was not that all (same story), but the performance and the storyteller does a decent job to keep you engaging in the movie. it must be applauded, right? also it had some good lines/dialogues.

the direction was quite refreshing and different from other movies. i just connected with the movie.

speaking of soundtrack, i was meant to write about it in my review but forgot it, so i will…

the songs were merged with the story so well, so that it never felt like a break from the movie, you know what i’m saying… i love the soundtrack, this is V&S best soundtrack after JB.

  18. tushar on October 25th, 2006 10:27 am

I saw the film sitting alone in a multiplex on its day of release, and I loved it! Reasons are aplenty, I love the music, treatment, the chilled out feel, the festive spirit, the in your face feel-good-satire, n I dont know, lots of things…
I am glad that I finally got somewhere to discuss the film!

  19. Honhaar Goonda on October 25th, 2006 10:40 am

    “the chilled out feel,”

that is it! that was the most good thing about HD. i like this kind of style of filmmaking.

  20. tushar on October 25th, 2006 11:08 am

even I preferred it over JB, that one I feel was too much trying to be hat-ke with all Requiem for dream kinda cuts, and no-humor-thats-humor kinda sequences…while this one was fresh, minimalistic, theatrical and if i can say, global in its intentions and appeal..

  21. striker on October 25th, 2006 11:18 am

the big picture definitely had an A to B simplicity to it.. but i felt it was trying to go overboard in too many directions with too many random cuts here n there. i’ll give him points for style and treatment though =d> the industry definitely needs more of that
