Honeymoon Headache Pvt. Ltd.

A few Kingfishers later, I was in a state of mind where I could pretty much enjoy any movie. Or at least that’s what I thought. I was hopeful that a Farhan Akhtar production couldn’t be half bad. I should have listened to that inner voice that warned me about how the films coming out of his production house have only got progressively worse. It was a Saturday night and there I was, just a couple of miles away from the theater. So I figured, “Kya yaar? Dekh hi lete hain“.

Quirky and subtlely funny Anurag Kashyap dialogs incited a few chuckles as Reema Kagti breezily introduced her characters. Ten more minutes in, and I realized I really didn’t care for these people. I found myself focusing on the ensemble of amazingly talented actors, reminiscing about all their great prior performances. Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, Kay Kay Menon, Sandhya Mirdul, Ranvir Sheorey, what on earth are you people doing here?

The writing that started off as average, turned bland, and by the third act (if there even was one) turned downright ridiculous. Inconsistent pacing worsened Ms. Kagti’s uninteresting storytelling that fails to work even as a spoof. Character twists seem desperately forced, just to be different, while simultaneously acting filmi. Despite a diverse character pool that included an older couple trying to rebuild their lives, a runaway bride and her deserted husband, a woman who just can’t get her husband to get his mojo going, and even a pair of superheroes, the film bores and it’s idiocy shoots a sharp, splitting headache into the viewer.

A superhero couple you say? Yes, I dare say. As much as I was tempted to divulge more of this film’s ludicrousness, I figured I’d be nice to those who are still interested in giving it a shot. You really don’t need my spoilers.

= Thanks. I got saved by Good Luck… Thank God we drove in the opposite direction and let the Kingfisher ka suroor linger on till late night… ;)

  2. Vijay on February 26th, 2007 12:40 pm

Bach gaye tum log. Dimaag ka jo dahi hua yeh pichar dekh ke, I wish I had gone for Eklavya instead.

  3. oz on February 26th, 2007 1:02 pm

I have made a better version of Eklavya on PFC… :) I guess we should ask Ambala dhaba to start a internet service on tables that drink more than 10 kingfishers :)

  4. t! on February 26th, 2007 1:09 pm

    @ oz - I disagree.
Table Internet service at Ambala means that precious table real estate that is used by ordering four large bottles of Kingfisher at a time will be taken by computers.
But, where will the beers fit if there are computers on the table?
Better to save the precious remaining table space for pakoras…

@ Vijay - Thanks for the heads up, I had such high hopes for this film…

  5. OM on February 26th, 2007 1:11 pm

@ Vijay..Not even Kay Kay’s dance could save it? errrrrr..lol!!! Another new Filmmaker crashes after a bang….

  6. striker on February 26th, 2007 1:13 pm

thanks for reviewing this one vijay.. was hoping for someone on PFC to confirm the rediff review before i spend my money.. tere paise ne mera paisa bacha liya.. just for that, a round of kingfishers for you during my trip there in april ;)

  7. oz on February 26th, 2007 1:20 pm

Striker : beware! serving kingfishers to PFC LA Gang means you are in for a round of outrageous mindboggling stories and ideas firing all around for the next 2000 scripts. I would advise you to wear a helmet before entering our “adda” with kingfishers in hand.

  8. oz on February 26th, 2007 1:21 pm

= Oh t! weren’t we ordering 5 large Kingfishers till your first bottle saw you going … @-)

  9. Vijay on February 26th, 2007 1:24 pm

Hahaha. It was quite an evening. Those kingfishers made me reveal certain things about certain people I would not have otherwise said.

  10. striker on February 26th, 2007 1:24 pm

oz, i can handle it :D bring it on.. no helmet needed! hum bhi kisise kum nahin >:)

  11. mainak on February 26th, 2007 1:43 pm

    Hey Vijay!
Whats going on? Long time. I hope i will get some time out for the festival this yer but i doubt it. Good luck with that. When will you divulge the list of feature that will be screened this year?

Anyways thanks for this review. This movie got made for more than just filmmaking talents of Reema.
I bet all those AD’s of Lakshya are partying hard in bombay right now after her pathetic debut.

  12. Vijay on February 26th, 2007 1:48 pm

Hi Mainak. How are you man? Hope I can see you at the fest this year. The program is not yet locked. We will announce the program officially around 2nd or 3rd week of March. Keep watching. You’ll see a lot of IFFLA on PFC.

  13. Saurabh on February 26th, 2007 2:06 pm

I still remember the moment when Vijay asked me .. “I wish I had a gun” :)

But to tell you the truth, the whole theater sounded dead when the SuperMan and Superwoman appeared nn the silver screen.. I mean what the heck, what these filmmakers want us to watch?

My first comment was while coming out of the theater: “The film was made just for the sake of making a film”.

  14. Chaitanya Tamhane on February 26th, 2007 3:28 pm

I was watching Reema Kagti’s interview on t.v. the other day and man, she sounded like one helluva confident woman! She almost sounded like she’s gonna make Citizen Kane! Said Salaam-e-ishq is a very bad film and the worst i have seen in recent times (Cuz plotline resembles her film) and that her favourite film is ‘Close up’ by Kiarostami and what not!

    Alas!

  15. OM on February 26th, 2007 3:45 pm

@ CT…empty vessels make more noise…case with Reema?

  16. Vijay on February 26th, 2007 3:46 pm

I say leave the director out for now. What were the producers thinking when they read the script? A superhero couple? I have an open mind when I watch movies. Heck I’ll watch anything. But when you’re trying to be an emotional, intelligent comedy (the effort was evident, the result, not so much) and you attempt to build your narrative to that effect, forced twists and turns simply make the effort laughable. It’s like watching Black Friday as is till Baadshah Khan gets arrested, and imagine Kay Kay at that point singing a song out of happiness.

  18. steve on February 26th, 2007 4:19 pm

    People!!

    How ruthless are you guys??!!

I’ve just watched ‘Honeymoon Travels..’ and my! What an entertaining film!!

I really enjoyed it (which means you’ll hate it!!) and it really exceeded my expectations!

It had the right blend of realism, fantasy and humour with heart warming scenes that really stay with you…

I really wanted a ‘halki-phulki’ fillum and i got alot more!

C’mon guys, lets not just rip a film to shreds, lets appreciate the good stuff…. pleeeeeeeeeezzz!!!

And yes, this is miles better than ‘Salaam-e-ishq’!

    Infact there is no comparison!

  19. OM on February 26th, 2007 4:29 pm

@ Steve good to hear that you loved the movie. Its a just such a divergent board, PFC that is. I would love to hear your side too man. Me personally havent seen the movie, but have been getting vibes that it isnt that good. It excites me to know your version.

  20. mainak on February 26th, 2007 4:39 pm

CLose UP is really a good work of film. I watched it last week.

  21. rockstar on February 26th, 2007 7:56 pm

    its a bad debut!
the director does not have a hold over
    storytelling…

This movie got made for more than just filmmaking talents of Reema.
@mainak . i would like to know why this movie got made?
because i will believe whatever u tell me

  22. rockstar on February 26th, 2007 7:58 pm

but Mainak please be genuine in whatever u tell me
its another thing to run down a film or a filmmaker
but quite another thing to run down his/her personal life

  23. Anand on February 26th, 2007 10:01 pm

I liked the film quite a bit. A nice set of interesting characters thrown together. Most of them were very believable…even the superhero couple. I thought that was a nice touch with some interesting dialogues such as the number of times superheroes fight, etc. All in all, I had a smile on my face almost throughout the picture…more than I could say about any of the recent films.

  24. Meeta on February 26th, 2007 11:48 pm

I thought the movie was worth a watch just for the many times it made me laugh out loud (with the characters, not at them) in the first half. I thought the dialogues were just awesome in the first half.

Acting is super. I had a few problems with the characterisation. And they started losing it in the second half, but it was over before you knew it. Would have been much better, if there wasn’t a forced story for every couple.

Since Vijay has already given away the super-hero angle, here is what i thought of it - though i did no like the way they disclosed it, i figured it was to point out that only super-hereoes can be perfectly synchronized in their likes and dislikes.

  25. surya on February 27th, 2007 2:06 am

hey guys - wish me luck… i still wanna give it a shot.

  26. Bhavesh Purohit on February 27th, 2007 2:19 am

hey vijay..i did not hate the movie … ya the super hero part was ridiculous and also i feel there should have been more with ranvir shourie’s character… but the other stories were nicely handled and funny too..

i liked the refreshing look and performances by all other actors… i basically enjoyed the film.. i feel not all movies can be extremely sensible.. after all its a movie and provides u entertainment… the movie was overall entertaining… ya it was not the funniest movie but it had its funny moments…

and ya if the director is saying salaam-e-ishq is a bad movie then i completely agree with her..
    Its one the worst movies…
infact i could not refrain myself from telling it to NIkhil advani himself..i expected a lot from salaam-e-ishq and the director..

but there is no point in comparing the movies cuz they r completely different movies..only similarity is about 6 love stories..

  27. steve on February 27th, 2007 3:02 am

    Om, cheers!
You have a point yaar, lol…. but a newcomer director ‘always’ deserves a chance, and especially if their film happens to be enjoyable compared to alot of the recent biggies!!

Infact, for me, this film stood out for just being itself, not neccesarily because it had Farhan Akhtar’s banner etc, etc…

    Anand..ditto man!!
I had this huge smile on my face whilst watching this movie too.
Infact the last time a film had that impact was Shirish Kunder’s ‘Jaan-e-Mann’ (another entertaining film which was unfairly criticised!)

Bhavesh, I agree with ur comments on Ranvir Shourie

  28. Phoenixnu on February 27th, 2007 7:11 am

Hey Vijay, its not that bad yaar. I saw it with few friends and felt it was good time pass. Nothing great but worth watching once. Here’s one new director making her debut n trying something new!! M for all that. At least she is trying, not like hundred others. Also, one big factor was some good acting.chcek out Ranvir’s gujju pronunciation…this man is always good.

Secondly, KK’s sajna diwani main vari vari is total paisa vasool. It such much fun to see that intense actor dancing like mad.
N yes,its much much better than salaam-e-ishq( hav re-named it iss raat ki shubh nahi!! saw it on late night show)

OZ n others…do watch the movie n then decide!!

  29. ashima.s on February 27th, 2007 1:35 pm

HTPL is a good first attempt. Its engaging, fast-paced and has quite a few laughs. Kay Kay, Boman and Ranvir are a treat to watch.
I would second what Phoenixnu said, don’t junk this one without watching it.

  30. steve on February 27th, 2007 2:03 pm

    Hey!!
That’s 3 thumbs up now, yay!!

And the KK dance just has to be seen!!

Im gonna go and watch it again man…:d/

  31. Tushar on February 28th, 2007 12:26 pm

Steve, I saw the film today, and fully agree with you. i guess a film working or not is just highly subjective. i ll talk about that more in the post. jeez, you liked jaaneman! me too!

  32. Vijay on February 28th, 2007 12:33 pm

To be honest, I liked Jaaneman too. I found it funny. I enjoyed it because the filmmaker new what he was making and did not pretend that the movie was anything other than a solid masala film. With Honeymoon, I was a little thrown off because on one hand it was trying to be intelligent and tongue-in-cheek, but then also ridiculous. Anyway Tushar, as you said, a film working or not is highly subjective. We all look for different things when we walk into a movie. I guess I just did not get what I was looking for from this one.

  33. OM on February 28th, 2007 1:03 pm

Poor Jaan-e-man… had it not been released with Don..i am sure it would have caught more attention than it did. Take away the last 15-20 mins of Jaan-e-mann…its a thoroughly entertaining movie. The editing was spot on…i felt it was a strong competition to RDB as the best edited movie of the year.

  34. steve on February 28th, 2007 1:36 pm

I’ve just come back from the cinema… watched it again!!
This time i dragged my extremeley fussy sister along, and guess what??
    SHE LOVED IT TOO!!

Tushar, Vijay & Om, you guys loved ‘Jaan-e-Mann’? Yay!!

You know, luckily i managed to tell Shirish that.
I had a word with his distributor and i got through!!!

Ofcourse he appreciated it, but i just told him the truth, that his film was s-o-o-o-o entertaining and thast the only thing that let it down was the promos!!
Man, they did the film no justice at all!

Well, just hope alot more of go and see ‘Honeymoon…’

Oh, and have to say, the way its shot is impressive and the soundtrack really rocks too!!

  35. Tushar on February 28th, 2007 4:42 pm

    @Vijay, right said fred.
just to tell you how i went into this one. i had just returned from a short film festival, so wanted to be free of all the filmi jargons, and have pure fun, and thats what i got, with some logical and some illogical sequences, i particularly trip a lot when i see crazy things happening in hindi films, like superhero stuff treated in a goofy manner.
oye steve, i might see it again too, but first gotta prove the world wrong about Eklavya :)

  36. Shuchita on March 1st, 2007 12:38 am

    I personally Loveddddd the movie..
I was reluctant to go for it reading all bad reviews ..
But little did I know what a surprise I was in for…
The film is a total timepass with loads of funny moments..
There are little nuances from a couple’s point of view that are captured by the director..HATS OFF !!!

I would love to see it again..bt jus that i wudtn enjoy it as much coz of the small surprises in the movie…that really made it PAISA VASOOL for me

From a technical perspective the best part of the movie was the individual characterization..So much precision is really rare these days..
    and KAY KAY !!!^:)^

    The Film truly Rocks !!!
