Hulla – final boarding announcement
Jaideep Varma | Exclusive, Movies | September 16, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Hulla releases day after, on Friday the 19th. I request those interested in it to please see it this weekend itself as it may well be off theatres by next weekend, unless word-of-mouth builds up.
Hope at least some of you will find it worthy of commenting on here and I will look forward to all observations – critical and otherwise.
To make it easier for some, the following people may not find the film worth their while.
Those who do not feel the need to silence their mobile phone when they get into darkened theatres needn’t come to see Hulla because they will quite simply not understand the point of the film. Why waste time then?
Those who don’t believe that craft is sometimes merely that which keeps the viewer engrossed right through the entire duration of the film, whilst being intangible itself; nothing to excite them here, sadly.
Those who want at least one or two of the following in a film – stars, dance floors, lip synch peppy songs, slapstick humour, guns, gangsters, molls, sex scenes, item numbers…they will be very disappointed. Sadly, there isn’t even a romantic track in the film and I personally apologize.
Those who don’t like Indian Ocean’s music – it may not be a good idea for them to waste their time on this film. Even though their music probably constitutes less than 20 minutes overall of the film’s 111 minutes, it is a sensibility thing. The tuning will probably just not happen.
And finally, those who find everyday stories about everyday people boring might want to give Hulla a royal miss. That is all there is in the film.
Those identifying themselves with the above, sorry, but this ride’s not for you.
For the rest of you, I hope you’ll hop on. And in this (exclusive) customer comments book below tell us if the journey was pleasant enough, and if the view and destination worked for you. Thanks for your time.

Hey Jaideep,
) then just for the agenda of promoting “small” cinema.
The first release jitters can be killing and I hope you manage that alright. Will check it out for sure, if for nothing else (since you so brutally shot down all expectations
Good luck with Hulla. I have a good feeling about it.
Best,
Sudip
oye Jaideep…. dont worry man… I’ve told dozen of my friends abt hulla being the movie to be watched this weekend….. Just one good review and I’ll shoot it through the mail to every single soul i know…. The promo led me into believing tht the movie WILL work…coz it has humor… and small films in India WORK when there is humour in it… so best of luck… and PFC toh hai hi tumhare aur tumhari film ke saath!!!
Jaideep- You sound very defensive with this post about who shouldn’t waste their time seeing your movie. Give people a benefit of doubt. None of us have grown up on great cinema all our lives. Over the years many of us have seen many crap and great films and now appreciate better cinema. Maybe your movie will help change the outlook for many who till now saw movies for item numbers, molls, sex scenes etc.
Be positive and all the best!
I was surprised to find Indian Ocean’s music during the promos of Hulla. Music by Indian Ocean is enough for me to go out and watch a movie
Best of luck!
Will be there… (will try) with gang in tow
YOU finally provoked me to write here few lines Jaideep ji….i was regularly catching you articles and well this is my feed back……this article of your shows how natural and weak you are as first timers..you are excited to see your movie after such a hard work (thoyugh there is no saif in this), at the same time you are feeling first release jitters which are natural and required….coz there is a thin line between confidenc and overconfidenc.
you did your job and dont even say anything about it neither negative or positive..let the audeince decide about it ..coz they areb the final verdict…i am a writer /director..(and forced actor too)…..i always say to my team and frndz…I MAKE MOVIED FOR AUDEINCE COZ ITS NOT THE TIME TO MAKE MOVIE FOR ME ..THAT WILL COME AFTER A WHILE…..I REPAET WHAT GEETA SAID (THOUGH I REALIZE IT VERY LATE)KARM KIYA JA FAL KI CHINTA MNAT KER COZ HUMAN IS JUST DESIGNED TO WORK ..WE CANNOT ASSURE RESULTS ..BUT WITH A TRUE AND HARD WORK IT WILL COME OUR WAY MAY BE LATE BUT IT WILL COME…….WISHES FOR YOUR PROJECT AND BFORE I FORGET TO MENTION….RAJAT AND Sushant Singh BOTH ARE KNOWN , IF NOT STAR BY STAUTS BUT SURELY STAR BY WORK…..
BYE AND JUST CHILL
Jaideep… just chill man… let the audience be… they will anyways do what they want to. You sit back and enjoy the game. All the best.
By the way my friend maneej’s film promo’s are going with your film right?
@Jaideep..chill..it’ll all fall into place..
To be honest I will go and watch “Hulla” only because of the discussions here on PFC and nothing else.
The promos should have been better for this kind of movie which lack stars and glamour to pull in crowds. There is no sarcastic/witty line in the promos, you can sense the subtle humour but one need to show smarter lines in the promos. Humour which is crisp not lines like “Aap night shift kyun ni kar lete?”. I am sure Hulla must be having some good comedy moments I somehow feel its not coming out in the promos that well.
Maybe after reading the discussions I was expecting something else and the film has something else to offer, that I will be able to sort out only after watching the movie, for the time being I genuinely believe one need to create a better buzz for this kind of movie.
One need not spend millions on advertising every time to make people curious a good example is “Bheja Fry”, I still remember how smart and slick Bheja fry promos were and they created that most required buzz
@Jaideep
Arre don’t worry……consider the PFC janata as your marketing and sales army ,if the film is good then I will personally send out a hundred mails and make at least 20 of my nearest friends watch the film.
I will try and catch it too.
Wish you all the best.
Is the film based on your novel ‘Local’?
All the best Jaideep..
@ Jaideep
I don’t think many people (in fact most of them) know themselves this well that they could clearly say ‘we like this and we don’t like that’. There are people who travel to Bangalore on a weekend to catch an ‘Indian Ocean’ concert and still “love” ‘Singh is King’.
There are people who find ‘mumbai Meri Jaan’ or ‘Wednesday’ compelling cinema but they won’t miss a Govinda-Sallu starrer for their life.
Though i understand that the post above is basically more of a ‘brand positioning’ thing but it might turn a few people off rather than getting the right people in.
And yes, as somebody else said, the promos could have been better used to convey what the film is about. I know about ‘Hulla’ (and even looking fwd to it) only because i visit PFC…else it would have been a case of ‘why do these guys look under-confident about their product’. (That’s the vibe i get from promos)
In any case, will try to catch it. And best of luck!
Hello everyone and thanks. Just wanted to post a reminder about Hulla and tried to be too clever, I guess. Am not really feeling that jittery (or defensive) but even if i was, don’t think there is anything “weak” about it, as Deepak says.
Ankit, I don’t like the promos at all myself for exactly the same reasons you mention. I also feel the film is coming across as much more slapstick in the posters, etc. than it actually is.
Vineet, thanks, I enjoy the PFC interaction a lot too. But freely tell me what you think of the film.
Anveshi, no, not based on Local at all.
Thanks again.
hay jaideep …now u sound too cool man…sorry if word “weak” bother you …i just wanted to say that it is better to get cautious than over confident as many big names industry do mistake and they keep on doing that (see the recent fall of every big banners)..coz they will feel audience will digest any nonsense….tashan, jhoom barabar…many more….
i wish u had seen all positve i include for you and your product yaar…..but i am impress with one thing you are a very clean heart guys and dont use nay thing like politically correct and save from being diplomatic…
wishes for you
Good Luck Jaideep..Hope Hulla gets a great response. Sadly its not releasing in USA.
Jaideep, Let Hulla release, ude baad Hulla gulla hi hoyega !
Relax, and chill out for the next five days. All the best !
Thanks to all for your wishes again.
Om, it seems Hulla is releasing in the US (and Dubai) – here are the details – Fremont and Lakewood (CA, at Naz 8). North Bergen (NJ, at Columbia Park 12) and Irving (TX, at Hollywood Theatres). Does that help in any way?
Jaideep, no it doesn’t
Poor Om will have to drive to PFC HQ from Phoenix to watch your movie at Naz 8
Ohh man releasing in Irving..shit now i miss Texas…
Jaideep…i am in phoenix, AZ…Singh Is Kingg released on the second week of its worldwide release here…so..ermm..
Hey Jaideep, wishing you and Hulla all the best! Personally am quite looking forward to Hulla! Have already heard rave reviews from our production manager who called it a ‘dhamaal’ film
It seemed an interesting film that notwithstnding!
Looking forward to this friday!
Hi Jaideep,
There are three releases this week one of which is ‘Hulla’ and to be frank I’m more keen on watching your flick as oppose to the other two. Like you mentioned in your latter post the film is about everday stories and everday people and that’s what got me interested. It’s a simple story yet intriguing. It’s about the comman man and cos of this, teh film will work wonders at the box office not in the first instance of course but it will be dependant on the word of mouth and reviews in the press. If the word of mouth is strong and the reviews are good cinegoers will flock to the theatres to watch your film for sure!! I predict the film’s collections will pick up from the second week providing the word of mouth is strong and trust me, that can get around quick and encourages the not so keen viewer to watch it.
All the best!
Laila Khan
@ Jaideep – All the best! I am sure it will be a great experience watching it. I also hope that it continues the success ratio of all the small/medium budget films thats going on since the last 4 weeks.
The only question I have is why are you releasing your film with 2 other multiplex targeted movies? coz then it will definitely cut into each others business..especially when one of the movie is directed by Shyam Benegal and the other being Sas, Bahu and Sensex with Farooq Sheikh returning to big screen after a long time.
@ OM bhai – Yippe!!! I can watch Hulla @ Hollywood Theater :-)
Aur Jao Phoenix…
@Jaideep
I remember Anurag K telling me this before the world premiere of Frozen at Osean New Delhi…
“You have made a film, not many people do it…You know deep down how the film is…Just enjoy the moment when the lights go off and the first images flicker on the screen and audience gapes at it…Your name is etched in history…Don’t count the empty seats”
So just chill and I know you can’t be there in all the theatres but I would suggest that you buy a ticket and watch your film with strangers…They are your audience…It will help you…Best of Luck
hay jaideep ……….me and my team is goinf to watch hulla first day onwards we are 12 ppl group so i watch and come back with review of majority….very excited to c this movie yaar………….
my freinds made me believe that m the most cynical guy on this planet as m never happy with anything and then i discovered silence on the floor…now i know i hav some competition! jokes apart..all the best jaideep!hav few questions but let others watch it first. till then just one…is it 67 or 74…or was it a joke…the only figure in ur film. n ya ya if m not wrong, spotted the poster of leaving home too….life me na sahi film me hi sahi…nice…umeed hai….chill n enjoy!
hi jaideep – well i liked the promos – but guess thats coz i like anything with rajat in it. seriously i’m gonna catch this movie and promote it to friends ( which i hopefully will). i guess i can understand where u are coming from with those disclaimers in ur posts- and partly i agree with u – if the wrong kind of people start liking ur movie – then u begin to doubt whether the movie really is what u thought it was.wat u say?
if u have made a sensible watchable movie – it will get its audience -in the theatres and later on via DVD.
just make sure the visibility and word of mouth is there as far as possible.
here’s hoping all the best for u and the movie
partha
i meant i will promote it to my friends if i like it (which i hopefully will)
partha.
Am looking forward to Hulla. I’ve heard it is same storyline as “Noise” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425308/plotsummary), which I really enjoyed. I don’t know why we can’;t get original storylines in India, but even if it is copied, at least it is Indian. All the best.
Rajeev, I understand the instinct we have to suspect any film in india that it is copied (even i have that sometimes) but at least check it out yourself – in these times of the Net, it takes less than a minute. Here’s the IMBD link of Noise – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425308/plotsummary
Does Hulla look like it’s lifted from here? If similar themes means same storyline and rip offs to you, then every romantic film, every war film, every action thriller, is a lift, right?
Don’t regurgitate stuff that others spew out without any input of your own.
Phoenixnu, it is neither 67 or 74 – just as there are no daughters he has given for marriage with his own hands. If you get the drift.
God’s son, i would like to know view of minority as much as that of majority. I really think there’ll be people who’ll dislike the film, and also enjoy it, am just hoping the second category is larger, that’s all.
Shivajee, appreciate your email. Thanks for your wishes. Your sound designer Vivek worked on Hulla – his second film after yours. Will be buying tickets for many shows because i have a laughter meter that i want to test out. :-)
Anniruddha, boss i have had no control over anything except making the film. I’m even worried that the promos will make a lot of people feel let down when they realise the film is really not an out and out comedy in the second half (which is the real meat of the story actually). Anyway.
Am touched with the support here. Hope the film is worth your while.
Rajeev, sorry, just realised you have seen the same link. If it still seems like Hulla to you, maybe you need to see Hulla and see the difference for yourself. Guess i have nothing more to say. But it is pretty off-putting to see such shallow associations result in such authoritative comments.
Hi Jaideep !!
well.. me too, going through the promos was thinking it to be a humour tale, and i was quite charged up to catch the movoie… but you revealing that it not an out of out comedy infused some doubts !!
i guess you shouldn’t have done that.. i am still optimistic to catch the movie..but my expectation are now mild.
Still BEST of luck with your flick.. Hope it gets at least its deserved audience
Up to you Ajay, please don’t go if you just want out and out comedy. Wouldn’t want you to be let down. But you might get your fair share of laughs and chuckles anyway, if you go.
ya gt it…but the way he says 74 suddenly everyone in the theatre was what!! recently had a long discussion with some freinds on the closing shot/scene of any film..what works n what not n why this n why that…was wondering d same about hulla ? why so ? what was ur thought ? i think u can talk in detail only after its release. will wait.
have seen it at osian’s and liked it. am spreading the word around…but sorry to say didn’t like IO’s music…they have been sounding the same since some time now…!!! they were Ok in a movie like Black Friday, but not in Hulla….Sushant singh was terrific!!!
Best wishes, Jaideep!
taran adrash of hollywood Hungama ( who has given 4 stars to ‘Singh is King’) has given 2.5 stars for HULLA. HA HA Ha
Jaideep This was a very good attempt. One of the nicest movies ive seen in a long time. It reminded me of Manoj Kumar’s shoor in a way. I am not associating but noise being just one of those things we take for granted.
One sad point was underusing of Indian ocean:(
wtg Jaideep
Dont let the empty seats stop you.
I Have just seen the film…I dont know if you still follow this post or not..but I absolutely loved it..Everyday stories about everyday people…how interesting!!
This film for me was just a slice of life…
very well made film..and the music of Indian Ocean fitted into the film so well..
Did the film had a music release? I never got to hear the music before..
Anyways..Congratulations on a great debut..
I look forward to seeing many more films of yours!
