Engendered is an annual, New York-based transnational arts and human rights festival that brings together the best in contemporary South Asian cinema, visual arts and performance to explore the complex realities of gender and sexuality in modern South Asia, especially at the intersection of ritual and religion. The festival is designed not only to raise awareness, but also act as a fulcrum to enter public dialogue, break silences and impact perceptions around issues of gendered identities, stereotyping, bias and sexual choice and further, how those issues relate to affirmation or violations of human rights, health rights and women’s rights.
Engendered is presenting I VIEW FILM 2009 this August 28 – 30 at the Lincoln Center and Asia Society in New York City. This cutting-edge film festival brings together a body of bold and contemporary cinematic work that provides a new lens with which to view South Asian Cinema. Films range from Bollywood to independent Hollywood to eclectic shorts and documentaries from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, as well as the Diaspora in the United States and Australia. This year, the film festival’s opening film “Dostana” and the closing film “Luck By Chance” are two of the major Bollywood blockbusters that involve themes of sexuality and gender inequity, a clear indication of the topical nature of such social issues.
Participants of this year’s event include Mira Nair, John Abraham, Zoya Akthar, Boman Irani, Tarun Mansukhani, Shyam Benegal, and Farhan Akhtar.
Come out and support South Asian Cinema in NYC this weekend!

If you have a chance to attend this, by all means, go. Several panelists at the Engendered screening and salon in March spoke quite persuasively, and with gentle humor, about their personal experiences. It was a truly worthwhile event.
Saturday starts of with Dostana, and the day’s films are all about topics related to homosexuality and alternate sexual identity.
Sunday finishes off with Luck By Chance, and the day’s films are about topics having to do with women, including Shyam Benegal’s Mandi.
This article from Time Out New York is really informative about the program, in particular about the gay half of it.

I really look forward to hearing what all these people have to say in the ongoing big conversation about sex and the movies in India.
