I wanna be deaf again!
There ain’t no heroes in Indian film industry. The majority of current actors in the Indian Film industry are all Hijdas. When was the last time a good old skool action film released?! In the 21st century we haven’t seen any quality action films, have we? Dhoom 2? That was rubbish – it wasn’t even a slick action film – old skool action films are much better. ‘James’/'Shiva’ was much better than that. RGV tried to make old skool action films – If he had been successful – then we would have been seeing so many quality action films. But what we get.. crap like ‘Cash’? Give me Dishoom Dishoom.. anyday.
I was hoping some director would read that quality of article and make a Dishoom Dishoom film – but I guess I was wrong about director by chance will read the article! Why have we stopped making action films? I don’t want to write an article. I wanna swear shout like Sunnypaaji used to do in the old days. I wanna fight like Sunnypaaji fought in his films. He was bulletproof. Hothda ka haath tha uska. He did not need a gun. His one punch was enough. Where as today’s hero cannot even hold a gun.
In Omkara, I was expecting a lot of Dishoom Dishoom – gory stuff because it had that fierce look to it but I guess the look was a bit misguiding – the film fizzed out – it more concentrated on creating misunderstanding between the key characters. I wasn’t interested in that all. I hate films which is based on misunderstandings and all. Urghhhh. Fight it out!!
Aparahn, I liked that film. There were a couple of good scenes – 1) When Ajay Devgan goes to jail where he gets beaten and 2) Ajay Devgan taking the revenge. However, it is more of a straightforward film. There weren’t that many classic fighting scenes.
Khakee, Gangajal and Dum… what can I say about those three films. They are the best action films in recent times. Only three quality action films in last – in last five years!
And today I was watching Kacche Dhaage. The police were blindly blazing guns at Ajay Devegan and Saif Ali Khan and not even one single bullet hit them – it didn’t even move their hairs. No actually, Ajay Devegan did get hit once, that was only to show that the brothers have reconciled.. And the ending scene…bullets flying everywhere for next ten minutes.. the heroes inviting the goons to fire at them but don’t get hit…. in the end, all goons die… police make an entry, heroines reappear, maas reappear, and THE END. Paisaa Vasool!
I was watching ‘Ghatak’ yesterday, that is a quality film. Kya dialogue the. Kya Herogiri thi. Kya Shouting thi. Kya dishoom dishoom tha. If Rajkumar thinks about remaking a film, then he should remake this film. Why isn’t he working with him again? Why didn’t he have Sunny Deol in Halla Boll? And Danny had that menacing villain look. He should have been included in that list.
Have you guys seen Narashima? I don’t remember when was the last time I saw that film. And I don’t remember anything about the film apart from that fact that it was a brilliant film. Sunny Deol played as a drunken messiah – he had that lion tattoo. But as a kid, I loved that film, and I am going to try and get the DVD.
SO where was I.. I wanna see an old-skool Indian action film which has Sunny Deol as the rebel hero, Juhi Chawla as his wife Boman Irani and Danny as the two menacing villians. What else? Some good hitting dialogues for Sunny Deol, Boman Irani and Danny. Who can write such dialogues? And Sunny beating hell out Boman and Danny in the end. And what about the story? I said Sunny Deol as the rebel hero!

I hear you man…I recently revisited Ghayal and Ghatak…I think shool can be added in your list of decent old school action movie…and Gadar…
yeah Shool was a brilliant film; it was released in year 1999. I was more looking into the action films released in the 21st century…
Gadar and 2001 Space Oddessey..
hearing Sunny paji roar in Gadar…and scaring the shit out of the entire city police force …priceless…it reminded me of a scene in Kubrick’s 2001 space odyssey…two groups of apes are fighting over a water body…how do they settle the dispute?? by roaring…may the louder one wins!!!…so much for progress in civilization…I think we should adopt more of these old ideas to settle the disputes…for e.g. we can use the dog’s solution to resolve the disputed territory issue…
That 10 corer scene, eh?
how was Aan by Bhandarkar? I think it was released around the same time Khakee got released… Did you watch it, is it worth a watch? with Shatrugna sinha in their I am seriously thinking about giving a shot one of this day…
for dialogs in your movie…I suggest Shyam Gupta …he wrote dialogs for Ghatak and Barsaat (it had a few khatarnak dialogs mouthed by Mukesh Khanna).
I was heavily influenced by these action movies( especially dialogs). I have recently renamed my american neighbor as Balvant Rai…why?… he has got 3-4 dogs.
Aan was rubbish – that film is a joke. It was more of a parody – an insult to old skool action films. Aan is crap. I didn’t like it. Watch the film at your own cost!
Rebel Heroes have died out in the Indian Film industry because our GDP has been growing?!!
Guddu Dhanoa tried to make a few films (with sunny paaji ofc) of the genre you are talking about.. Only ziddi could could work out to a certain extent…
Guddu made “Big Brother” with Sunnypaaji, which was released last year. Some how, I am not tempted to see that film…
i liked Ziddi. i saw that film again… B4U keeps showing his films on regular basis. Betaab was on Sunday night.
Have you seen Aprichit “Anniyan”?
erm, never heard of the film :w; non-hindi film?
Anniyan in Tamil, Aparichit in Hindi (released last year)..
http://www.rediff.com/movies/2006/may/19aparichit.htm
Yeah Anniyan! it was superhit. I remember my friend was in Chennai when it released, autowallas were asking him “Saar Anniyan dekha kya?”
I watched this movie in Tamil without understanding a word :D (was looking at Hindi version only yesterday, dubbing is pathetic)
Anniyan dekh lo HG or wait for YRF’s “firsht imprssion ij last impression” ie. Tashan! :P
well.. there was one action movie last year: shootout at lokhandwaala.
and if you want gangwar and not dhishum dhishum – i think vaastav is one of the best in a very long time.
the best pure action movie of all time in bollywood (just for action) would be Phool Aur Kaante. Who can forget the legendary Ajay Devgan entrance!!!
I understand your requirement for dishoom dishoom but then Omkara, and dishoom dishoom! :o
:-w Liked the thought!
I am a dishoom dishoom lover but the scene has to have some logic or either of my favorite heroes listed here:
1. Sunny paji
2. Ajay DevGan
3. Arnold Schaws…
4. Silvester Stelon
5. Tom Impossible
Dum was trash movie. infact, Ghaath (manoj bajpai) having same storyline was good.
“Deewar-Let’s bring our heroes home” was a good fast paced action movie.
AAN was also a good movie but Khakee is the best action movie came in recent years.
are honhaar
dukhati rag pay hath rakh diya re :((
how i miss sunny paaji
i can repeat watch jeet, hero, ghayal, ghatak, and all in this category endlessly
three directors has utilised sunny good, santoshi, guddu dhanoa and anil sharma.
they should continue
i don’t bother his age
there is no body else who can produce an adrelene rush in audience as sunny still can.
Arjun, Ghayal, Ghtatak and Gadar are best Sunny action movies.
just a thought
in the mind of indian people
intellectual hone ke liye pilpila hona jaroori hai.
:(
ndtv main just books aata hai. mere mood to uske anchor ko dekh ke off ho jata hai.
I ‘ave read that review before, i think! There are quite few Tamil video stores down the road, so I might try to rent the dvd.
Neeraja, Have you seen the promo of Tashan? It’s just the look.. and lately, I have realized looks can be very disguising..
Santosh.. okay, I did get a bit carried away.. however, I wanted to see a lot of action and blood in the film, but it ended up as a drama, which I didn’t like it. The drama wasn’t as good as Maqbool.
Shailesh, I though Dum was much better than Aan….
Exactly Vishrant. If SRK, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar can play role of teenagers or someone in early 20, then why cannot Sunnypaaji…….
Noone remembers Narashima?
Brief note on NArsimha.
Narsimha created lots of hype as it was second film of sunny after Ghayal and N. Chandra after Tezaab.
i loved sunny’s tatoo and particular background music comes when he is on screen..something like “dhina dhin taa…” also there were some interesting characters in the film…Tempo Dada (johnny lever).
Narsimha was particular N. Chandra film having lots of people, riots, hero against system..
i think love story of Ravi behl and Urmila was not interesting and stretched.
songs were also good by LP.
“jao tum chahe jahaan, yaad karoge wahaan, ke ek ladka duniya me hai. jo de sakta hai tum pe jaan…”
and “hum se tum dosti karlo, yeh haseen galti karlo…”
‘Ghatak’ remains one of all time favs.. sheer anger throughout… great movie..
the scene at Kashi’s bro funeral just flashed my mind…
action films and no mention of “JaaniDushman Ek Anokhi Kahani” BLASPHEMY! 8-|
What action was in that film! it is a Nagin film. A different genre…
:w;
matrix meets T-2 meets MI-2. :-w
apart from the serpentine saga that is :d
That looked cheap! Not Dishoom Dishoom.. though! You know like, Big B’s flying kick or Sunny Paaji’s punch…
Santosh.. Read that Nagin article.. if you haven’t done so…
may be you should look down south for a heavy dose! Vijaykanth et al. :d
hmmm…good old times…narasimha !! i remember it for om puri..oh fuck wat an actor! sunny paaji was superb…must see sunny’s films damini, ghayal, ghatak, narasimha, betaab, gadar, joshilay, tridev, lootere, vishwatama, dushmani, arjun pandit.. and my favourite…guys do chek DACAIT ..u wil bcm a sunny fan!!! MAA KASAM!!!
Rebel hero?:-?
Menacing villains?:-?
Too unimaginative…
Whats the point of gratuitous dishoom dishoom anyways?
In hindsight a Sergio Leone style epic showdown might be interesting to watch if the build to it is worth it…;)
Knowers – Is there difference between action films and violent films?
Anjaam (SRK, Madhuri) looked violent film though action was less, same applies to Darr.
Raam Jane ?
———
NarSimha was criticised a lot and it was not a successful film. First Sunny was quite successful hero then and N Chandra was also riding on the bumper success of Tezaab and Narsimha came as a dud at BO.
Narsimha was criticised for weak portrayal of Om Puri also. He was main villain but his white outfits, strange wig and his name Bap Ji and his screamings went against him. He looked a caricature than a lively villain. This was perhaps his first main stream effort and old proverb became true- Sir Mundate hi ole padna. He was quite bad in the category of Kulbhushan Kharbanda’s villaneous effort in Shaan. Both art film’s actors helped in the sinking of two mega projects- or we can say directors could not make them appealing in villaneous roles.
:(
Narsishma had that famous song …hum se tum dosti kar lo ….am i right :-?
Rksaab.. not another discussion on classifications of different genres.
What Narsimha was a dud film? How could it be?! Not possible…
French.. i don’t care if it is too unimaginative… but you have to say, “Dishoom Dishoom” sound effect is very imaginative
@HG
yeah it may turn out to be all style no content film but I am eager to watch Akshay Kumar back into real action.
and talking about action movies, Ghulam qualifies as one no?
@HG,
How it matters for new and first time audience of present days now if it was a successful film or a dud? How you find it now?
Genere-I dont know w.r.to hindi cinema what is taken as an action film and whats is a violent film, thats why I asked if somebody can differentiate it clearly with examples.
And war films? are they action films too. as then JP Dutta’s MASTERPIECE LOC-Kargil will top the list.
Similar scenes are repeated again and again all over the film till audience run to buy an antidote for headache.
Funnily every character/actor dies on screen in same fashion. same stunt/action. One screams after seeing his dear colleague dying and he comes in open, say mother sister abuses to Pakis and dies without even killing a single Pakis.
Thank God actual soldiers did not follow pathetic script of Dutta Saab else Pakistan might have been making a resort at top of Kargil;)
you know, I was a big fan of Akshay Kumar’s Khildai series. I went to see his Khiladiyon Ka Khildai first day first show. It had WWF stars.. Undertaker, etc.
I was only about 10 or 11; me and my cousin on a bicycle went to the town centre (we lived on the outskirts of the town) to watch the film. I wasn’t scared of riding bike to the town then, but now, I would not even dare to ride a cycle in the city..
And now I cannot even stand half of those khiladi films. Main Khiladi Tu Anari is bearable..
Ghulam.. was released in 1998, I was more looking into last five years action films. And I hated Ghulam.
Watch out for Aamir’s version of Ghajini.
It shud be a decent action film.
i think, Pyaasa, would be a good film to analyze – answer your question. That film did not do that well when it was released but now it is termed as a classic – why?
Likewise, ‘Narishama’ can be suggested as a classic Dishoom Dishoom fillum, no?
or watch BBC or CNN and Prince Harry’s actions.:)
and you got ticket for KKK, of Akshay Kumar at the age of 10-11. They dont control adult material there as far as Hindi films are concerned?
Oh yes, I did get the ticket. In fact, I watched Rangeela as well. But back then.. didn’t know much about, erm, ….. :”>
@HG (43)
I am saying same thing that for new audience it does not matter what was the fate of film at BO when it was released. He has to watch it free from any kind of impression.
BTW Pyassa was a successful film when it was released. You meant Kaghaz Ke Phhool perhaps.
——
Thats why I asked you how you found NarSimha. For me it was bad then and I would find it bad now also..:)
@RK(40)
)
Glad I didn’t watch it.
@HG
I enjoyed watching Khiladi and Main khiladi Tu Anari. Also, Mohra.
Don’t know if I’ll like them if I watch them now.
Hope he makes a grand and ishylish entry in Tashan :D
you hated Ghulam? any specific reasons?
I liked Narsimha back then; I still remember that Lion tatto/lion jacket – whenever he made an entry there was a roar in the background. Dimple Kapadia shows Sunnypaaji the correct path… something like that.
Will have to watch the film again.
RK …talking abt war films i think lakshsya stands out in Indian cinema ……
HG ..there was DUS ….it was not good but it had some senseless action ….
i think bapji was a very imaginative name….to say the least..”bapji ki jai ho”….and i completely loved narsimha ..
excellent post HG…..
i agree with ppl who say that khakee was the best action film in recent times….
i think the two ppl who are capable of giving us a dishoom dishoom classic are raj kumar santoshi and sunny deol and i seriously hope they work together…
some of the memorable dishoom dishoom movies..
most of amitabh’s angry young man movies….
ghayal
narsimha
ghatak….underrated but excellent..sunny deol was
brilliant..better than srk in ddlj…
border : i think it had a lot of dishoom dishoom
too..
shiva..the old one…
gadar…
khakee
gangaajal
p.s sanjay gupta tried to do some dishum dishum movies but he failed miserably..
by the way, I just found out that they remade Kireedam (Gardish in Hindi) in Tamil last year.
Any Tamil junta here? Can I hope for some good action in this one?
Ah Mohra, I once did a dance of ‘Tuh Cheez Baadi Hain Mast’ in my society – it was the 10th day of Navrati. Nah, I pulled out at the last minute and played Krishna. Don’t ask me why!
Ghulam – Rani Mukherji – that voice -urgghhhh! Too much of bhasan less of action. Ending scene was like Ghatak – which I did like, though.
Rani mukherji’s voice was dubbed in ghulam ….
yeah, it was! who dubbed it? i thought, you cannot get a crappy voice than rani.. but i was wrong..
@Anand K(49),
Lakshya – stands out in Indian cinema,
you mean its best or worst?
If its best according to you then its a request to you to make a post on it. Its not covered on PFC. then we will discuss it frame by frame.:)
RK ,
it has one of the best war sequence in hindi cinema ….
After Dharmendra did Tehlka etc with Anil Sharma and Dadagiri with some other director his every film of late 80s and 90s are full of violence and abuses, screaming and muscle show etc.
Next asli action hero is Mithun Chakravorty, whose films followed same trend after Dalal in 1993. Next is Jacky Shroff. They all followed same path and lost any respect among audience.
—-
Apne has a boxer Sunny Deol. its released in 2007.
Lakshya is a drama genre.
I have not include any war films or any drama that has a bit action or any slick action films because I am interested in old skool action films i.e. Amitabh bachchan’s flying kicks, Sunny Paaji shouting and eating bullets, etc…
seems to me rk that u completely hated lakshya…/:)
you could have played Krishna and danced on ‘Tu cheez badi hai mast mast’! that would have been one memorable performance :D
Among all the Sunny Deol’s movies mentioned above, Arjun and Ghayal will top my list. Of course I haven’t watched all.
and what was so good about ‘Lakshya’?
@Ashwin,
No I dont hate completely any film. and masterpieces like Lakshya cant be even disliked (leave alone hate ) ;)
It was even notching above Ful Metal Jacket and An Officer and a Gentleman kind of films.:)
What wonderful get ups were given to Preity and Hritik. They looked wonderful. What a wonderful role was given to AB.
Only Om Puri in his short role remain unimpressive rest all actors gave their career best performances.
entirely original screen play, wonderful music, so intelligent camera work that captured even veins of angry Hritik.
Anand now you must make your next post on Lakshya.
Lakshya was a decent film ….and i was talking about the war seq in it …. ….RK tell me which hindi movie war seq will u rate at the top …
@anand k(62)
More on Lakshya when a post is made. Dont get distracted in your focus by my liking or disliking of any film.
Lakshya should be covered on PFC, thats why I requested you. You have seen it deeply and have liked for its USPs- that is war sequences.
Whatever is good should be mentioned properly.
Because of post many other good things about the film will come out in open. though many negative aspects of the film will also be coming out.
@60 Neeraja
“and what was so good about
i didn’t like Lakshay when I saw it for first time. Second time around I thought ‘not bad’. third time around i thought ‘i need to buy the soundtrack cd’ (Kitne baatien my favorite song from the soundtrack). Fourth time around I thought ‘i should buy the dvd’.
@HG(65) few more watching and you may start making a temple having a statue of Farhan inside:d
Its proved – You are a good human being with good heart.
Its old saying – living together and there generates a Mohh towards even cows and pets.
—
and your trend generates a huge serious curiosity, was film so complex that your liking got upside profile that too with mutiple watching?:)
@Parth(64),
Has electricity supply failured in your single screen/multiplex theatre? People are waiting so that film may go ahead than opening credits…
Its stuck there.:)
But was not casting shown in the end?:-?
I don’t rate Hrithick as an actor; he was in-yer-face through out the film; there was a bit Aamir-esque; BIG B; I found the film a bit slow, firs time around. But next time around, I did not mind that all.
It is sort of a laid back/casual film, that you can enjoy on Sunday afternoon or evening….
… Perhaps, I don’t have any Lakshay, erm.
Too many people didn’t like Lakshya coz they found it too slow..I found the movie paced just correctly..and many of the scenes were quite subtle..there were many opportunities for Farhan Akhtar to indulge in jingoism but thankfully he stayed clear of it..but many of my friends didn’t like the movie cos they said that it “lacked the punch”..and the movie’s box office failure showed that majority felt the same :(
I personally don’t mind slow films – but didn’t like the slowness in this film.. and then later found the film to be correct paced.
… many people didn’t like the film cos they had misconception about the film – that it is a war film, which it clearly wasn’t. War was just a backdrop. The film is a drama… well, all films are drama.. but you get the jist..
The thing that didnt work about Lakshya was the second half–that kind of herogiri would be easily at home in Anil Sharma’s films but coming from Farhan it was not so easy to take..
The first half though was never less than engaging.Even overall IMO it wasnt a bad film at all.
The only thing I disliked about Lakshya was Hritik in the disheveled hairdo playing a college boy – but Kal Paenn in namesake reminded me of the him, so perhaps there is no other way to do it. I like Lakshya – good songs, sincere effort from all – a nice film. I am no Hritik fan but I own this DVD!
Dishoom-Dishoom post HG.
We’re all missing our dose of filmy maad-dhaad.
Arre,kahan gaye woh He-mans, woh brawny heroes aur mirchidaar heroines,and ofcourse those menacing but harmless villians.
Those action movies were purely black and white,no shades of grey.
Yep,waiting for a straight forward action movie-
don’t see any comming soon:(
It seems you forgot Ek Ajnabi…though a dud at BO, I lkied Big B bashing up Arjun Rampal in the final sequence. Paisaa Wasool.
that was a poor copy of Man on Fire. but big b’s flying kicks were back..
Give me Rajiv Rai anyday.
some favs:
Zor- loved Sunny paaji in this one
Mohra
Gupt
All Rajkumar Santoshi – Pukar,Khakee,Family,even Halla Bol
Arjun Pandit
Kachche Dhaage, definitely
Ek Ajnabi, Shootout- Apoorva
Apne, definitely
N Chandra’s Narsimha, Tejaab
Prakash Jha’s films with Devgan
even Thakshak
not too fond of Akshay’s high flying sojourns, used to like him in old school stuff like Khiladi
Baazigar- that scene in the park – wow!
Darr – loved the blood
would love to see Abhishek in a good action film
liked him in bits in Dus
main khiladi tu anadi
not to mention, Shankar and his stronghold
Jaggu dada- Gardish, Angaar(WOW in caps), kabhi na kabhi(few bits)
Mukul Anand was a master of action too – Hum, agneepath, khuda gawah
Ghai saahab also captured it very grandly – saudagar, karma, ram lakhan, khalnayak…
more later
I personally love the Sanjay Dutt – Sunny Deol team ups in films like “Krodh” and “Yodha”.
Sadly one of Ghai’s best films is his least known one ie Krodhi with Dharam paaji giving an unbelievable performance. I’m also very nostalgic for films like “Farishtey” and “Elaan-e-Jung” which had Sadashiv Amrapurkar in his prime.
Also incredible was Mithun’s flick “Jallad”.
oh absolutely, those anil sharma magnum opus flicks…tahalka, farishtey,
have to check out Krodhi.
Love Sanjay Dutt in his no technology outings like Sadak and that ‘tunna tunna’ film. on second thoughts, he can give in an enjoyable dhishum dhishum in spite of the technology. remember Kartoos?
what about Naseer? he is pretty raw when it comes to masala action. tridev, vishwatma et al.
Naseer is great in out and out potboiler films like Lakshman Rekha, Panaah and Lootere.
Even Aditya Panscholi had his day in the sun with Saathi.
yeah, the ‘moochh’ sporting Naseer.
Pancholi was good, like an original goonda. I guess he was last seen in Vipul Shah’s Aankhen trying to outsmart Big B. Didn’t work.
We could also bring in the ‘Daaku’ genre here…JP Dutta, Rahul Rawail and the likes.
Naseer reminds me of ‘Jalwa’, got to watch that movie again.
@HG
an out and out action movie in last 5 years? How about ‘Elaan’? Have you heard of it?
oh! did you say good action movie?
@RK(61,66,67)
Man! you were on fire today!
someone should really write a post on Lakshya, It would be fun to read more on it coming from you.
@parth(64)
yeah what’s next? ‘The End’???
Ajay Devgan is one of the decent actors of bollywood who had created a conservative image for himself over the years. He had started as an action hero in Phool aur Kante,
@HG, Sunny Deols almost all films have him extending his 2.5 Kg hammer like fist to his enemies on screen. You might have missed Naksha and Jo Bole So Nihal. He is seen there doing similar actions which you have been liking.:)
guys, can you remember the dialogue in Narsimha :”Jai, radha madhav” people says while greeting Bapji.
the special background signature tune when sunny deol appears on screen “haiya re haiyaa…”
Lakshya was a damn good movie yaar! I loved most of it. Though I think AB was completely miscast but otherwise very well done…
check out chandaal with mithun chakraborty
Maybe we need the ‘Return of the Khiladi’ afterall :d/
@HG,
Did you also miss “Big Brother” (Former Devdhar Gandhi)???????????
It has all what you are looking for. Here Sunny’s opponents are not able to remain on ground after having a punch from him but they fly high in sky before falling down
Full2final action:)
yes, i’ve missed that film. but will try to watch that film someday.
In action and serious role Ajay is so ahead from the others his some of the finest action movies- Phool Aur Kante,Khakhee, Haqeekat,Quamat, Hindustan Ki Kasam,LOC,Lajja, Halla Bol, Apharan, Gangajal,Dilwale,Jigar, Diljale,The Legend Of Bhagat Singh,Suhaag,Kache dhage,Deewangee etc. all his movies are very good.
