i love the wall credit idea.. you should have persisted with atleast the main title..would have been so cool
@Navdeep. Felt nostalgic looking at the pics… Arvind, Subha… the overworked lightmen… the energy… nice.
WOW!=d>
cool man….the movie will work wonders coz this is a dull phase for the bookings at halls but audience wants to watch movies…festivities or not a nice movie is als welcomed watever the time…
wall credit?
aj, you need to click on the photos for their associated notes/comments
Navdeep…Pictures look good…..very nice.
navdeep , i did i guess i missed out that particular picture ..but thanks i have read the cooment now ..like anurag said it would have been great ..but what the hell , i am sure what you have done eventually would be as good.
I am really waiting for the film … Abhay is looking completely different (Good)
Yana Gupta, eh? Has she got a small role? She blabbering in Marwari/Rajesthani in the movie? hmmmm.
I could not tell from the promos, but a quick question, the film’s language is in Rajesthani dialect/accent, and not in….?
It’s standard Hindi except for Vinay’s character and some of the secondary characters.
Yana’s just a tiny special appearance. Pity.
Did you guys not have a dialect for main/protagonist characters because it did not require, or it did require but thought otherwise..? Or I shall find it out when the film releases..
anyway, regarding Yana Gupta, yep, what a pity! maybe next time.
The promos look great, im really looking forward to watching it..i like the soundtrack also..woh bheege pal is my ‘bedtime song’ right about now..
looking at your pics..i jsut thought about it..why arent woman allowed to do makeup.. supposedly they cant be part of that association? its extremely sexist.
I happened to see this film at the Osian Film Fest at Delhi. I would much rather keep my comments close to my heart especially as the film has not been released. I hope the euphoric surge of the great film-going Indian community perforates the darkness in my soul.
On another note “passion for cinema” must come across as a genuine “passion for cinema” and not just a name where everyone praises everyone else.
sahiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii pics ….. will revisit the pics again after this friday (when the film releases)
congratulations navdeep!!!
Awsome stuff..looks fantastic…just cant wait to watch the movie …have been telling everyone abt it..the virus is spreading navdeep
Navdeep…some damn cool mood pics. agree with anurag…wall credit wud hav looked super. n these days they write..stick no bills…there. btw, should put those 45mins deleted scenes online…if not 45mins then atleast some intersting ones…think it will also help in some or other way…
navdeep, keep persisting with the producers about having a director’s cut man.. would love to watch the film in its uncut entirety.. it’s the only way to watch a film! looking fwd to watching it in the theater…
Hello Navdeep,
I just wanted to suggest that you change the title to something like: Manorama – Do Ghaz Zameen ke Neeche or something on similar lines.
This would make the interest level high mostly in the north indian audience, which i believe is the target audience of this film. The “six feet under” can only work with city multiplex audience.
Hope the film does well. All the best
>-
- Navdeep, let me know who from PFC came to the premiere… if we don’t get exclusive premiere photos and a review of the movie from ALL those who attended the premiere, I will let lose t!’s Shahrukh Khan Barbie doll she’s just received on all the culprits
six feet under ( SFU) is a heavy metal band…and the title manorama SFU is making want to watch the movie real bad…tho its nothin to do with metal in heneral..convinced my roomies to cme along once it hits the theatres tomm..next johnny g and LOPP
Hi Navdeep, FOA i wud like to Congratulate u on ur first feature. da pics r really nice n it really reminds da GENERAL AUDIENCE that how much difficult it is to make a feature film. Gr8 job Navdeep. n btw, i also intend to become a Film maker in da near future. God Bless n Gud Wishes to u.
Navdeep,
I SMSed Anurag Kashyap to ask for your number so I could call and congratulate you in person. Don’t know if I have the right numebr for him (anymore) so here I am, posting to a blog entry in the hope of reaching you.
I watched the 3:30pm show at Metro Adlabs with two other people and we talked about what we had seen during the Interval and again after the movie all the way through coffee at Mocha thereafter – to my mind, we’ve not done that about an Indian movie released all year this year.
Congratulations! This is a spectacular achievement (first film or not) and I can only assume that you’re about to scale much greater heights from here on. As an aspiring filmmaker doing the rounds with a screenplay that producers either don’t read or don’t get it is heartening to watch a movie like this unspool on the big screen.
Anurag said, ‘get stars and the money will follow,’ which means I’m kinda screwed because I don’t know any stars.
Ah well…there’s always graphic design.
MSFU is a worthy addition to the canon of Indian cinema. Naysayers be damned. Thank you for persevering. Cheers and good luck!
Man NAvdeep Grrrreat movie Manorma is dude
Iloved it, what a climax , what a climax awesome. Abhay deol did killer acting dude. And vinay had his own moments. LOVELY……
After a long time got to see a good movie .
Yes, the movie is definitely watchable if you like a well-told story!
My review –
http://www.businessofcinema.com/boc/?file=story&id=5225
i know its too late to comment on manorama, but i wasnt being able to make it.. but finally i did… and it was WORTH it.. big time…
everybody has said all good things , i dont want to repeat those ..
i am an asst director handling continuity .. so when i saw abhay deol’s make up continuity maintained so well i was impressed!!
i know its such a small thing but it was so gradual a process through the film..that i had to comment…
and i had a question sir..the fish tank..what were you thinking that you had it all over your film??
i have made certain abstract connections(of the fishtank with the story) but i want to know why you chose a fish tank??
Pretty straight really,
Besides the big fish – little fish angle, the notion of fish in the desert (water) and the idea of being trapped in a space.
Shakuntala also refers to the mythological story which has a fish that swallows a ring.
i agree to this point sir…
it was also made very obvious when Mr. kharbanda feeds his fish small fishes and so it was indication enough for abhay deol ..that he meant that.
my whole question is
how you thought of fishes??
was it after one of the dialogues
or you had always thought that fishes will silently represent certain things?? and then based few dialogues and actions to support??
If I remember correctly, it just started as a character quirk for SV that he keeps fish in the desert(in early script/story discussions with Devika) It just rapidly expanded from there to little fish-big fish, etc.
Sir, What was the thought behind using yana gupta only for one shot……………it could have been any other person
if am not wrong, navdeep i think yana gupta was a mirage which very much obvious..taking about his mundane life..and the mirage is his figment of imagination..subconciously he wants a change..a new life…
Spot on, Sourav
Sorry for the typos and thank you Navdeep.
Umesh and Shailee, please don’t call me sir, it makes me feel old.
;)
Sourav, you’re welcome
loved the movie, i think raghu detective can crack more cases so i am hoping for a sequel
hiii hey hey…. navdeep bhai ( i guess thts better than sir ).. hehe !!…. manorama is a really good thought provoking film !…. yes The new wave of indian cinema is coming up (i am repeating myself ..hehe)…
I liked the fact that how the characters of the film…look inside them…rather finding the solution elsewhr !!… A Perfect naya noir (as said by a weirdo called as mayank shekhar..haha…cynical shehar must be his second name)….
Soo great going bhai….i m looking forward for more movies from your movies….and yes….please do watch my 1 minute film (a humble attempt)…for the contest !!!
and ohh well…you can actually take the SV charcter ahead….(if thts not repetition)… by showing him solving cases …. in different cases and situations….We neeed a Desi Bond…. hahaah….who is grounded to reality and solves cases ….thru his brain and not brawn and machines !!!!!
Wht say Navdeep Bhai !!!! (am a film/media student and i keep writing new and original things all the time….and wud love to be a part of the further developments of the SV charcter…..if u r thinking abt it )….
sooo it might be…manorama…7 feet under !!! ? for the sequel !!… but doono if ur the one who wud like to jump into sequel/prequel bandwagon !!!!!!
Anurag,
I heard that you have written “Shunya” starring KK menon. Iam glad some one is making a movie on it, coz in 2005 I sent out synopsis to factoryatwork.com a story based on cricket betting syndicate and scandals. A person called neeraj joshi was taking care of the website emails theni. I was willing to volunteer in the creative process, but unfortunately i am located in Canada. Is the film production still in progress?.
-Sree
needless to say i loved the movie, just one complaint … needed more mirages of yana
Dear Navdeep,
Am a little too late in writing in this entry, but it was necessary to write. I loved the film. Like Elvis already mentioned, its heartening to see films like MSFU come to the big screen. Kudos to STARS like Abhay and John for ‘wanting’ to do meaningful cinema. It doesn’t matter if they’re not the best of actors, they get in the money and that’s not bad for a start. Hopefully more will tread this path in the times to come.
My friend and I discussed various logics and rationale and holes in the reasoning provided in the script etc until 2 in the morning, but all that notwithstanding, I completley enjoyed myself for those 2 hours 55 minutes (break thoda jyaada hi lamba ho gaya tha)… looking fwd to your next.
Good luck for times to come.
Hi Navdeep,
Just came back from watching your wonderful film with Raj Zutshi. He mentioned that he knows you and I asked him to introduce me to you but couldn’t resist to write to you here. It is so refreshing to watch your movie. Congratulations. Hopefully there will be an opportunity for me to work with you.
Navdeep,
Gosh I have been bubbling to spill my excitement since last evening when I saw MANORAMA- 6 FEET UNDER. And just my luck to find your blog on PFC, which I hadnt noticed earlier.
I am absolutely thrilled after watching one of the better movies to come out of India in the last decade.
The best part for me was the focus of the movie to maintain a constant mood – a dry.. muddy one… where you can actually feel the smallness of the town.
It has so many subtelities within itself to review it many times and enjoy it each time over. The grayness of all the characters, the realism yet a sense of drama.. which is so fucking hard to achieve, this does so beautifully.
And also I loved the fact that the movie doesnt want to revel in the brilliance of one particular actor or play to his/ her strength. Vinay Pathak as always excellent here, doesnt get more than his share.. nor do the seniors.
To be honest, at places Abhay lacks the punch.. specially the drunk SV on the bike meeting Manorama, that scene he kinda rips.. but considering how new he is on the scene, I still am fond of him. He does look the part mostly.. and his mellow voice adds to the realism.
In short I loved your maiden effort. I will do my best to promote it among people I know, my friends … movies like this should be seen and appreciated.
And needless to say, I await your second venture.. I hope it isnt a SRK meets Rani in Netherlands kinds. We are sick of it all.. your movie is like a breath of fresh air.. more of the same is what we would really appreciate.
Cheers and all the best..
Hope this movie does as well as it should !!
-Krishna
Lovely pics..Gauri and tashi..and tx to navdeep for putting ‘em here…incidentally i saw these now much later after viewing the film…and may be thats why i say, the images are real, surreal..and have captured the desert mood so accurately…colors, expressions and the brilliant sunlit scape..
Navdeep, when and what is your next film going to be about?
Navdeep,
Loved your movie. Reminded me of Ingmar Bergman’s Seventh Seal. Need more directors like you.
Arunabh
Hi Navdeep sir
Can you pls post the picture of that bioscope boy.. i love that part most. infect the whole movie was very descriptive, When I was watching “Manorama” I felt I am reading a novel. I saw the deleted scene of the film and like that concept of bioscope boy and S.V’s incident were merging together. The film has so many layer which opens frame by frame..
I also belong to Rajasthan and the way you described rajasthan in this movie is really appreciated. specially the problem of water in the scene when Gul says to abhay that”pani pe zara meharbani karna, tumhare sasural se tanker nahi aane wala” I really inspired from the cinematography by Arvind. well I know abhay was not your first choice for SV but I can not imagine else than Abhay, He was superb.
Ultimately I would like to thanks for making Manorama.. Which included in the list of my best hindi movies list.
Regards
Kush
Navdeep,
Manorama … is my movie of the year 2007. What a storyline – its amazing the way you have build the layers in the stories … amazing the way its shot in such a low budget. You have extracted best performances from Abhay and Gul … and yeah, those two PP’s sidekicks were fanatastic …I am looking forward to more masterpieces from you.
Simply superb ….
PS, Is there a way I can get a Directors cut of the movie with all the deleted scenes?
Again, good job mate! keep it up.
Regards,
Ankur Pandey, Singapore
Thanks everyone for all the encouragement.
@Krishna, Nandini
The next one is under way and at the scripting stage, will reveal more as things get finalised.
@Kush
The bioscope boy was one of my favourites as well and unfortunately ended up on the cutting room floor though a rough version of it is there on the DVD in the deleted scenes.
@Ankur
No director’s cut in the foreseeable future. The DVD does have most of the deleted scenes (without indexing or explanatory commentary unfortunately)
Thanks once again to everyone who commented.
dear navdeep,
excellent work ! i have never ever seen such quality in a hindi film..
personally i haven’t seen a more progressive film after ‘no smoking’, and then i saw manorama…
hats off to you and AK for keeping the fire burning
i dont have much technical knowledge abt how stuff gets done…but whenever i have the cash…i’d love to work with you
Hi Navdeep Sir,
Thanks for ur kind reply.. i recently heard that you are working on two action based scripts. well i m eagerly waiting for them.. please try to do it earliest coz after watching ‘Manorama’. I cant wait more…
Regards
Kush
thumbs up navdeep sir .. saw it yestrday
The movie was fantastic and refreshing. Despite the slow progressing script, I enjoyed the movie.Just wondering what you are working on these days and when will we get see another artistic venture of yours?
Hi Navdeep, read your interview in Tehelka July issue. I’m at the crossroads too right now like how you were when you went to study at Pasadena. Can you please give me your email ID so that I can get in touch with you and get some advice about the same? Thanks!
@Hrish – you can email me – nopisinghATgmail.com
Navdeep,
Usually I keep away from films that my friends suggest as “yeh film jarur dekhna, ekdum alag hai”.
But I have to say your film was really hatke. And maybe it wasn’t the film at all, maybe it was the small things, the attention to detail, your aesthetic as a director that made is so special for me. Maybe this wasn’t your best film, but it was surely indicative of your sensibilities as a director and I loved that.
Now if you may indulge me more, I can list a few reasons/observations that made it so enjoyable for me, and are ever so absent in all of Bollywood films. Firstly I loved the sense of place your film creates. The location is like another characters in the film, it is the specificity of a place that audience connect to, not because they have been there, but because it helps creates the right mood, logic, and space in which it is easy to understand these characters and their actions. I loved the attention to detail, the mood of this place, its landscape of long dusty roads, typical houses, different vegetation, language/accents/dialects, its PACE, its colors that gave it its cultural identity.
I am also so attracted to stories about us, a film about somebody, a real person. And this seems like a small request, and yet it is so absent in mainstream films. Also those quick intelligent transitions and most of all the QUIET or SILENT shots, where characters are given time to breathe, reflect, emote quietly, live in the film space or maybe just be.
It makes them so much more expressive-So refreshing to not see the typical over melodramatic theatrical acting.
So for this and much more I applaud your film. As a filmmaker myself, you give me hope. All I can say is, I’m going to watch out for you.
And if you ever found the time or the inclination and would want to give my short film a watch, it would mean a lot to me. It would matter to me a lot knowing what you think of my film, if I may dare to say, we connect at some level…i dunno what is it, but u seem to get it. So if you if you ever feel like it, here it is

Thanks and good luck
