IFFLA: Day 1 – Live from Directors House!
As all the grand plans go, my first straight night at IFFLA’09 went for a toss. Instead of watching Shorts 1, I had a chance to catch Sikander, a film by Piyush Jha, that deals with conflicts in Kashmir. I will try to review the film tomorrow but let me use this post to talk about what happened after the screening.
Walking out of the screening satisfied with the film, I ran into a dear director who I can truly call the only main stream director I can call a dear friend. A few hugs and reminisces later, I got introduced to a few directors who are still baffling me with their stories. One is a genius ivy leaguer who left millions to make movies to another who left riches to be a nobody to discover himself.
What did everyone tell me – who am I, a 24 yr old IT guy having access to a laptop and making judgments about how stupid a film is? What is my existence? Did I ever make a film? Yes. Did it get released nope? Did I make it? Nope – Whom am I to make a comment on their efforts? Flying a lonely banner of someone writing on cinema, people respond to you, open to you, but at some level you don’t want to talk about it. Reason – humility.
There is Uma da cunha here reminiscing about how well our dear author, striker, can dance to how well Sid, our maverick author covered Berlin. Talking about films from how satyajit ray waited for a pigeon to go away from his frame to how a director is scouting locations using just natives of foreign land. Lesson learnt: creative people keep innovating all the time, wannabe’s just talk about stuff.
More in a few hrs but now I want to get drunk!!!
