Indo Pak Short Film Series In Orange County!!

Hi Folks,

Sometime ago, on this blog, I had posted that we in SAAFA would be having an Indo Pak Short/Doc Film series in Southern California. Then it got delayed, the location changed, but now we have a revised show and a bigger show in a brand new location.

SAAFA presents the Indo Pak, short/doc film series.

The event will feature the works of the up and coming film makers from South Asia and South Asian Americans. Also in keeping with my logic of “if you do something try to provide a potential commercial oppurtunity,” we will have on hand a representative from FILMAKA.

FILMAKA, a company which has on it’s board people like Deepak Nayyar and Colin Frith, provides opportunites for new filmmakers, by evaluating their short/doc and if potential is found, to support them in their evolution as feature filmmakers.

Also in our “challenge the system mentality” we will be throwing out of the window the concept that “the amount of money that is required is increasing” by showcasing a FEATURE film that was completed recently in Mumbai, for Rs 9 lacs ( approx $20K odd), named BOOMERANG.

When: Saturday, July 21, 2007, from 2 :00 pm to 6:00 pm

Where: Chapman College, Marion Knott Studios, Orange County

Sincerely,

Vivek “opportunity is not an issue, now do you have what it takes to put yourself on the line” Kumar

Can you post the list of films slated to be shown? I could not find it in the Chapman website.

Mainak- I don’t have the exact names of the films in fornt of me, since I shipped all the titles to Sabina, my contact at Chapman for her to do the test runs, etc.

The source of the films are as follows:
    (a) For the Pakistan category, films by documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid (Stanford and one of the most daring filmmakers out there), an animation by Cemendtaur, a short by Chicago based filmmaker and one from a USC filmmaker

    (b) For the Indian content, all the films from project MAMI, who did a short film series at the Infinity Mall theater in Dec, 2006. I have the collection of their award winning one’s (the jury was Nagesh Kukunoor, Ashok Pandit and Sachin Pilgaonkar)

    (c) For the Indian American content, have taken the best of the works collected by my friend Karthik Bezawada, who runs the site called Zatacom (although that may have been brought down). Karthik was based in Newport, NJ and had started this project of showcasing the works of short/doc/independent feature filmmakers on the internet. He is now relocated to India

I won’t be able to make it. I’m going on a road trip along the west coast. All the way to Seatle. For 15 days.

Don’t blame you Mainak, the road trip seems way more exciting, have fun. Can relate to that, when I was narrating my script to a Prod House in Mumbai and they liked it, I should have been excited, instead I wanted to run outside and catch the latest Wimbledon action on the giant screen.

Living and doing non filmi things amongst non filmi folks, in my humble opinion, will make you a better screenwriter /filmmaker, since the real world throws way more stories than interactions with people filmi and things filmi and watching films (I know they say contrary to that in script writing classes)
