This movie comes right from Tarantino’s stable, and Tarantino had fun. You know what to expect when Tarantino has fun. Awesome with a capital A. It is Tarantino’s best since Pulp Fiction. Let me use a cliche – Don’t walk, RUN for it.

P.S: When did I last hear someone saying something about the history book?

Confessions of somebody who is NOT “movie” or a “director” or a “star” fan or a “cinema industry” fan and so will talk about their movie kinds

Just saw Kaminey and IB …. while I loved Kaminey, watching the 2 movies within a week, didnt help me but get the thought, all the laurels (that is well deserved specially within Indian set up of movies) that VB got for Kaminey and hailed as Tarantino, watch IB (even a trailer) and you’d feel that “YES VB is as cool as QT of 10-14 years back.” For QT making such full on action gruesome brutality, with classic style, effortlessness, casualness and jumbling up the story making it absolutely interesting and making a cinema on which you know whats gonna happen, but still looking forward how this moves. Slow pace and the steady screenplay, though might bore you for a minute or 2 at times (I was also on the last show, so maybe it was my sleep) …. but by the end of it you walk out so bloody satisfied like you ve seen a movie …. though have watched QT movies before on DVDs, watching one in full screen hall, finally made me realise why he is considered to be one of a kind …. WATCH THIS ONE! ITS BRILLIANT

A good film, but if this were made by any lesser known person or say in Hindi, it would have been slammed hard. But Tarantino’s art of subconsciously telling you what is going to happen in a scene, before it starts and then playing the scene at such an easy pace, is absolutely enjoyable. The climax didn’t go well for me as did some scenes, but the hard hitting style of cracking a scene wide open right in the center is what I love in Tarantino’s work and IB has a lot of that, right from the very beginning till how he ends the movie.

I think if made by a lesser known person or say in hindi, this movie would ve achieved a strong status later than immediate, however, wo giving out the plot or the framework, d still say creating a fantasy out of the basic premise, and still making sure that the audience watch the stuff, is pretty much an achivement in itself… Sadly if the concept is tried in India, we will have PILs and groups flaring up … overall, QTs style of making a 5 minute story into a 2+hr one, with multiple plots going on at the same time together, always comes up with a racy movie, enhanced with effortless gruesomeness, which just doesn’t leave you … as the movie watcher experience ‘d still think (and thats just me thinking aloud) just keeping it to this movie, it’s kickass…

But, rather than crib about why I didn’t think it was a great film, I will tell you to watch this film to see the birth of a STAR!

Christoph Waltz, who has spent his career working in German television, STOLE this movie. An absolute joy to watch, he managed to steal every one of his scenes. I absolutely hope this is the start of an international film career for him as I cannot wait to see him on the big screen again…

Actually, wherever I travel I try to make it a point to visit bookstores and video stores. Even here in Southern California, every strip mall video store is a potential goldmine of videos and CDs that you may have never heard of before. I’d definitely recommend Primer which is my favourite. Then there is Timecrimes (Los cronocrímenes in Spanish) which is very much like Primer. People also recommend Run Lola Run but I haven’t seen it. Donnie Darko is there which also deals with Time wrap and is quite good watch. You may also try The Jacket and 12 Monkeys both dealing with paradoxes of Time Travel.

    ND ND says:

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge QT fan. Not only because he defies movie-making physics and makes genre-bending movies; but also because he comes off as a very smart and articulate person without any bs in his interviews.
    Now the IB review:
The movie starts very promisingly. Nazi-occupied France has a spaghetti Western feel to it. Col. Hans Landa (Waltz) reminded me of “Bad” in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. As Landa grills the farmer, the tension rises incredibly. Small details like changing the language of the conversation show that Landa is an incredibly astute man. The first “chapter” as QT calls it left me gasping for more.
Unfortunately, it all goes downhill after the introduction of the Basterds. Brad Pitt carries off his role with panache and there is an interesting character named Hugo Stiglitz. However, the rest of the Basterds are not impressive at all. Eli Roth is over the top and not believable at all.
The movie just dragged throughout and was very long for no reason.
Many reviewers are dissing QT because he uses an 80’s David Bowie song in a 40’s movie. Or because no details on the war are provided at all. These people need to understand that a QT movie should be only looked at in isolation and enjoyed.
And that is where my primary complaint is… As a movie-watcher, I expect to enjoy the movie. And QT has left me sorely disappointed. The dialogue is nowhere near as sharp as Pulp Fiction and the action is not as funny/campy as Kill Bill. Just blood/gore when it is not warranted. Of course, the problem is that QT can only be compared to himself. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, From Dusk Till Dawn are among my all-time favorites.
But Grindhouse and now IB are absolute clunkers. I have given it three stars simply out of respect to QT. And maybe someone can enlighten me on why this movie is so great.

ND, my review for the movie, is out of watching the movie… not trying to comparing it to any of his previous work, no pulp fiction, no RDogs no KBill… doesnt matter if he used an 80s song in a 40s movie… to me by the end of the movie I was pretty gung ho and charged up.. I felt that post 2 hours, despite having quite a few real slow moments and movie losing pace… the end of it you walk out all excited all over again, and all those slow moments make sense again … which doesnt happen too often… by the end of it the pitch of the movie stayed on … but then again, each of us entitled to what we feel, depending on what we expected or what was on with us while we went in to watch it .. :)

Just back from watching this movie. I’ve always loved QT’s style of film making. His trademark way of unfolding a scene (as Oz bhai pointed out) is always enjoyable. Pretty good movie, though changing historical facts and blending with fiction didn’t go that well with me (the climax). If anyone else would have made this movie instead of QT, it wouldn’t have been this enjoyable. I would give 3.5 stars. There is no option for giving half star, I would give 3.

The thing that I like most about QT’s movie, since his Kill Bill days, is the strength of characters. His lead characters be it the hero or the villain are always superlative in their jobs. I personally loved the movie and it has always been my opinion that QT’s movies are great on 2nd viewing. We all ( especially QT fans ), expect a lot from this guy. When Pulp Fiction came out, it was trashed by critics, and then it gained its cult status. When “resevoir dogs” came out, ppl expected it to be a heist movie , rather it was a conversational movie, with the heist in the background, After this, people fell in love with QT’s dialogues and writing. When Kill Bill 1 came out, critics said, it has too much of violence and was missing QT’s dialogue and writing, ( after a while, how fun the movie was). When Kill Bill 2 released, many of them complained that there’s too less of action and more of dialogues. Now, looking back , they consider the Kill Bill movies as one of the best work from QT.
“death Proof” was his take on B-grade action movies and I loved it too, although because they clubbed it with Rodriguez’s “planet terror”, I believe this movie suffered. I personally loved the dialogues in this one too, espceially the ones in the Bar.

Basterds is again defying what QT has done in his previous. you simply cannot slot him and also cannot compare him to anyone else. He takes you into his own world, his own characters, his folklore and the scenes spellbindingly open up one after another. I loved IB. great ensemble acting. I love Col.Hans Landa the best, apart from Brad Pitt and Eli Roth. QT is spot on. After the first 2 chapters, the momentum does go down a little bit, ( that probably is the only complaint I have ), but I do realize that QT relishes in building up the movie towards the end. Without throwing in any spoliers, please do go watch this movie.

    Hail QT !!! :)

Things I didn’t like: should’ve been more of Aldo Raine and the Basterds – set up so well but didn’t really do much, unnecessary gore (the film wouldn’t have been any less entertaining if the baseball bat bashing wasn’t so explicitly shown).

An Act, he was so proud of till now, he now finds difficult to watch unfold in front of his eyes in all it’s brutal glory. May be I’m mistaken.
