Inland Empire - David Lynch’s strangest yet!
The master of crazy is back, and with a bang. Today I watched David Lynch’s latest work, “Inland Empire” at the ArcLight Dome at the AFI Fest. Lynch and the film’s lead actress Laura Dern showed up after the movie for a hilarious Q&A session. It was quite an experience to see the master in person, and hear first hand where the ideas come from.
To be honest, I really don’t know how to classify Lynch’s latest film. It’s 3-hours long, shot entirely on DV, and for most of the movie, you really don’t know what the fuck is going on. But at the same time, you just can’t take your eyes off the screen because everything that you see is just so damn arresting. And at the end, on some odd level, everything feels like it makes sense, but you really can’t put your finger on and explain why it makes sense. I guess I’m not making sense to most of you right now. So for those who are new to Lynch, let me briefly explain what he’s about.

When you watch Lynch, you can’t really break his films down and understand the story. Lynch on first view, is about the aura he creates. A feeling. A sense of fear, confusion. The audiences have to be a part of all these senses. Either you get him or you don’t. And if you don’t get him, don’t try to understand him. You’ll enjoy him a lot more.
“Inland Empire” is a dream for Lynch fans. No distributor was willing to release the film so Lynch is distributing it himself. Which only tells you all the more about it. It’s an experience like you would have never had before. Don’t miss it!

I am dying to see it…Being a lynch and surreal cinema fanatic!
what’s the story about Vijay?
Thilak: If you love Lynch and surreal cinema, this is for you! You’ll either love it, or you’ll hate it, but you’ll never be able to take your eyes off the screen.
Oz: What’s the story about? Hmm. That’s a tough question to answer. There’s so much going on. Let me explain first how Lynch said he made the film:
He wrote a scene. Completely random. Just one scene, had no idea what it had to do with anything. He got some actors to together and shot it. Then he wrote another scene, that had nothing to do with the previous one. He called his actors back, and shot it. This way he kept shooting individual scenes over a period of 3 years, and finally, he put them together. The final script of “Inland Emprire” was not completed till the film was completed basically.
So essentially, there is an actress trying to stage a comeback (played by Laura Dern). She lands a terrific role in a film that is apparently cursed. The director of this film (played by Jeremy Irons) admits to her that it is a re-make of an older film that was never finished. It was based on a Polish folk tale that’s cursed and whenever anyone tries to tell the story, the actors playing the leads die!
So that’s the base of the story. But the way Lynch tells it is what burns a fire under the audience’s ass. You see everything from time and space being warped within the actress’s mind, to the lines between what’s happening in the movie and real life, completely blurred and confused.
Like I’ve said, Lynch’s work has to be experienced, and felt. It cannot, and should not be understood.
Oh yeah!!!!
I have been waiting for this, and it sounds like the wait was worth it!
I just rewatched Lost Highway recently, and am always amazed at his ability to create such fascinating movies out of seemingly nothing….
smoke some and watch eraserhead.:o
I never liked eraserhead. For whatever reason I never connected with that film. Yet, I can watch the rest of his movies, expecially Wild at Heart over and over again…
David Lynch destroyed a couple of years of my youth with Twin Peaks. It ran on Saturday nights at 10:00 here in California, and I actually scheduled my weekends around the damn show. Luckily enough, so did most of my friends, who would show up at my place for themed food and drinks. Yeah, we were dorks….
hmmm
I am an obsessive lynch fan…must catch it soon!!!!
Looks like u hasvent been able to understnd the story yet…..dont worry..happened to me in Mullholland Drive :D
