Interview With Kailash Kher
Sudhir Nair | Exclusive, People | November 17, 2008 at 1:16 am
Like the last time when we interviewed Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, this time also Honhaar Goonda was the driving force behind the decision to interview Kailash Kher. And like last time, Sourav Bhuyan followed up for getting an appointment.
Sourav and I met up with Kailash Kher for an interview at his studio at the Kailasa Studios in Mumbai. It was a free wheeling interview in which Kailash shared his experiences about everything from his struggle days to the formation of the band Kailasa to his south Indian movie experience to their latest soundtrack Dasvidaniya.
A small intro about the Kailasa band for those who came in late – Kailasa is a group whose main members are Kailash Kher, Naresh Kamath and Paresh Kamath. Naresh & Paresh are brothers. The music is composed by the trioka and the lyrics are written by Kailash Kher. They have come out with two albums so far – Kailasa & Kailasa Jhoomo Re. They are currently working on their third album. They have also composed music for movies as well, with Dasvidaniya being their latest release.

If there was anything like ‘Face of Nation’ then I would nominate Kailash Kher.
Absolutely wonderful!! you made my day.
i hope he includes a kailasa version of ranjha in his next album. he had nahirwara in the first album and chhaap tilak in jhoom re. so i presume it could be ranjha…
It reminds me of Annu kapoor singing. I love Kher’s “Pyar hai ya saza” from salaame ishq. I think his voice suits sad and angst filled songs very well.
erm, what? i didn’t get that. kailash kher’s singing is same as annu kapoor? that annu kapoor who presented aantakshari?
Hey..i cant access any video in my office. :(
Can anybody put the interview in the text format…Please!
Sudhir
just saw the interview… thank you.
Thank You PFC for this…i don’t know how you always manage to strike a chord with me.
Thank You PFC for this.i don’t know how you always manage to strike a chord.
Finished it last night..this was awesome..Sudhir and Sourav..waah waah..Thank you!!
Great stuff. Finished watching all the interviews. Clearly one of the best interviews I have seen of Kailash Kher. It was great to know his insights on composing music, influences, lead vocal singing, formation of Kailasa..
Looking forward to their new album. Need to get back to listening to Jhoomo Re. Bum Lahiri has been their best track in terms of production IMO.
@Rasik, OM, Satish, HG
Thanks..both Sourav n I enjoyed the taking the interview also..glad u all liked it
@ Tushar:
Yeah I agree with you…Was pleasantly surprised to see Kailash Kher opening up so much.
Defiantly learnt a lot about him…Even Iam looking forward to their new album.
Hey Thanks guys for the inputs…thanks OM and Tushar.Kailash Kher loved the question..he said it was bang on and spot on.Gem of a guy..very passionate and he did answer the questions quite candidly..loved every moment of it.
OMG Dasvidaniya’s music was wonderful. The lyrics were amazing too…..Dil ko choo diya
These guys will go a long way. Sonu was absolutely fantastic…in muskura. Took me back to the old 50s songs…
reminds me of “main shaayar to nahin magar ai haseen” from Bobby.
Why was the interview in English? Jo aadmi itni pyaari Hindi bolta hai – it was painful to see him talk in an unfamiliar language. While I am grateful to the interviewer for such a candid talk, I am also disappointed that so much was “lost in translation” :(
awesome talent…Sayyan rocks….more power to Kailash kher….
@MusicLover – rightly said! Would have loved if the entire i’view was in Hindi.
And thanks thanks thanks for doing this and posting the clips. Its absolutely wonderful.
Kailasa is one of the finest Indian bands I have EVER seen in my life. Seriously, if you guys haven’t, you SHOULD. Check them out live.
They performed here (US tour) earlier this yr, with Atif Aslam. Though Atif rocked equally hard. But his band is sort of an one-man show. Kailasa is something to experience – the Kamath brothers are immensely talented. Naresh esp, with his earth shatterring bass and the harmony he provides. Its heavenly! Kurt Peters is solid like a Rock on drums.
I had a age old video of Kamath bros and Kurt Peters when they performed as a band named ‘Om Grown’ – it was one of Sa Re Ga Ma episode where they had bands compete. Even at those early days, these guys blew me away with their level of musicianship. After coming back from the show, I digitized the VHS recording and put it on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTP45jafzwE – watch it, its in 2 parts).
And if you have heard Naresh on Avial tracks, you know the kind of musician he is.
With Kailash Kher’s divine voice, the band completes the range, from folk to rock to jazz to fusion. The spectrum is amazing, and can be only experienced live.
Sudhir – Thank you!
