Hello comrades! This is an invitation for all to attend the 2 day Mithibai film festival starting from the 6th of August at 10.00 in the morning. We plan to make this a monthly affair and screen as many films as possible for students and film buffs alike. The films will be curated by yours truly and the annual fees for being a member is a nominal sum of Rs.175 (Yes! just 175 for the whole year). Though primarily meant for Mithibai students, all PFCites will be treated as guests and will be informed about the future events.

Here’s the schedule for the first two days :

Schedule for the Mithibai Film Society

Day 1 (6th August)

1) Close up
Directed by : Abbas Kiarostami Duration: 90 mins Country: Iran Language: Persian Year: 1990

Plot Summary:

Pretending to be Mohsen Makhmalbaf making his next movie, Ali Sabzian enters a well-to-do family in Teheran. The actual people involved in the incident re-enact the actual events, followed by the footage from the actual trial that took place

2) Camera Buff

Directed by : Krzysztof Kieslowski Duration: 117 mins Country: Poland Language: Polish Year: 1979

Plot Summary:

Factory worker Filip Mosz is a nervous new father and a doting husband when he begins filming his daughter’s first days with a just-bought 8mm movie camera. He tells his wife and believes that he now has everything he ever wanted since his youth as an orphan, but when the local Communist Party boss asks him to film an upcoming celebration, his fascination with the possibilities of film begins to transform his life.

3) Memories of Murder

Directed by: Joon-ho Bong Duration: 132 mins Country: South Korea Language: Korean Year: 2003

Plot Summary:

A South Korean thriller based on a true story, Memories of Murder comes across like a hybrid of Silence of the Lambs and One False Move. A pair of rural detectives, Park (Song Kang-ho) and Jo (Kim Roe-ha), chafe when a Seoul detective named Seo (Kim Sang-kyung) gets involved in their big case: Korea’s first known serial killer, who’s killed two women on rainy nights. Seo is dismayed by the rural cops’ interrogation methods, which consist of beating suspects until they confess–and they aren’t above planting evidence or “helping” a suspect remember the details of his crime. While Park and Jo seek clues from fortune tellers and magic charms, Seo struggles to build a case from hard evidence and the forensic approaches only just starting to take hold (the movie is set in 1986).Visually stylish and psychologically astute, Memories of Murder is as much a portrait of cultural change as a serial killer mystery.

Day 2 (7th August)

1) Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown Directed by : Pedro Almodovar Duration: 90 mins Country: Spain Language: Spanish Year: 1988

Plot Summary:

This colorful hit put director Pedro Almodóvar on the international map and cemented the reputation of its star, Carmen Maura. The film is a peppy little soap bubble as TV actress Pepa wakes up to find a note from her lover, Ivan informing her he is leaving. Desperate to tell him some important information, Pepa almost kills herself with sleeping pills, burns her bed, and spends most of the movie trying to track him down. Her adventures put her in contact with Ivan’s insane ex-wife his handsome son, and the son’s fiancée. They all descend on her penthouse apartment in a deliriously comic extended scene, complicated by a pitcher full of narcotic gazpacho and her friend Candela, a ditzy beauty wanted by the police for associating with Shiite terrorists. Through it all, the indefatigable Pepa fights gallantly against her crushing heartbreak. As a testament to the resilient beauty of women, this free-spirited film rings true and is a treasure.

2) Hidden

Directed by : Michael Haneke Duration: 117 mins Country: France/Austria Language: French Year: 2005

Plot Summary:

Georges, who hosts a TV literary review, receives packages containing videos of himself with his family–shot secretly from the street–and alarming drawings whose meaning is obscure. He has no idea who may be sending them. Gradually, the footage on the tapes becomes more personal, suggesting that the sender has known Georges for some time. Georges feels a sense of menace hanging over him and his family but, as no direct threat has been made, the police refuse to help….

3) Underground

Directed by : Emir Kusturica Duration: 170 mins Country: Yugoslavia Language: Serbo-Croatian Year: 1995

Plot Summary:

A surreal, absurd mix of politics, sex, fantasty, black comedy and brutality that has been widely hailed as one of the decade’s most exhilerating cinematic efforts. During World War II, a pair of friends in the Serb resistance hide in an intricate cellar. Years later, the war is over but the lies and deceptions continue. Winner of the award for Best Film at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
