“Film-making!- Most over-rated profession of the world”- said a person who has been in the industry for more than 30 years, who has directed over 50 films and has retired from direction sometime back. Whose energy and passion for films and story-telling is so high, I wont be surprised if he talks from his grave . Also the only two words that can best describe his head-stone would be- “Action, Cut it”
However coming back to what he said…is it true?
For I believe it is. And I’ve hence wondered why it is so? May be you’ll be able to help me with the answer…or a variety of answers to conclude an answer from!
What is it about filmmaking that gives us a superlative feeling for it definitely does! Is it because we play god- the writer pens the life of his characters- the director gives it shape and form and the actor lives multiple lives- all of which a normal 9 to 5’ver does not do!
Does all of this elevates us in our hearts and minds…
I’m tempted to write much more but I’m withhold it for a much later time when my take will have some credible experience to back it…until then I’ll be open to your take on this one- tell me…
But hey…not to forget….i’m proud of it!!

i am a cinematographer – documentary film and television. I have directed/produced one film and an working on the edit of my second. Despite that, i feel YES film is a way over-rated medium. I think film-makers take ourselves way too seriously. Though, with such rapid changes in technology changing the very nature of the story telling, I feel we’ll achieve some balance soon ;) Cheers!

I don’t agree with some of what you said here, but then realized that the comment I tried to write made little sense because I don’t understand what you are trying to say when you state that filmmaking is an overrated profession.

Expand on your thoughts. Maybe I will agree with you more than I do currently….

I think he means the director.
Which can be very true in some cases.
Watch the interview of DAVID CHASE in the special features of Season 1 DVD of SOPRANOS. He also says the same thing. Half the films could be made even if the director wasnt present on the set. There is a proffessional to do everything. He is the most useless guy on set.
    But only 50%.
rest of the 50% movies are the movies that has moved us. We are blogging here only because of those people.

directors definitely are but not the process of film making. bcz directors think they r the one who hav made the film possible but the truth is its a joint effort. so many people together on same tangent.dont think its over-rated in any way.

    A N my take for film-making wd..
as filmmaking is a possibility, between action and cut it. Many vision many stories fancy come out in every step taken by individuals associated in it. Cinematographer wants to tell something through his tool. Musician express them self. Editors accumulate those rough and out of this he want to express something.Makeupman, choreographer. They follow themselves and others. All together, create a vision that came out in unisons. We see them in flowing frames.
upto negligible person or character even unconsciously they express there experiences..they keep doin experiments enjoy themselves lives life..and It

    Specially for- t! and OM
My apologies for not being clear enough to both of u, secondly dear OM i wud never form opinions just because “someone said so.”
The reason i happen to believe so is the meek surrender to “dis-organisation” that certain people accept under the name of film-making. Certain people and their talent is taken for granted, “time” is not given as much attention- for example pre-production at times goes on forever….I’ve known friends who give a lot of importance to the dreaded “mood” element when it comes to filmmaking,”aaj likhne ka mood nahin tha”. Had they been in any other corporate profession would they have the liberty to do so.
How i look at filmmaking is that ultimately its a job and it can be done more crisply if a certain discipline is embibed into it, as i had this notion in my mind which was furthur endorsed by someone whose been in this profession for decades, i figured there must some truth in it, what say?
    cheers

I too am lost with the title of this argument.

How can this profession be ‘overrated’?

It gains as much attention to it as the public will take, no more no less. Some of the ‘artists’ involved with some of the productions take themselves too seriously, that’s true. But filmmaking isn’t rocket science, rocket science is easy.
To make a film takes a collaboration of light, sound, action, pacing, direction, music, set design, editing and a cast of hundreds (in studio world) behind the scenes to pull of a Titanic. It ain’t easy, no matter the size of the budget, and they all deserve our respect to complete a single movie.
