It seems most of you had an orgasam while watching this trailer. It’s not that good…..really! Like someone else commented, it immediately reminded me of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

If you truly are exposed to good cinema this movie would not excite you so much but I guess an overdose of the run of the mill Bollywood flicks makes these occasional “realistic dramas” quench your thirst.

Seriously guys, you need a reality check. This is what becomes of you when you live in “confined states of being”. If so called “stark reality” floats your boats I say good for you but who want’s “stark reality” when it is your everyday life. One can only truly enjoy movies like Kaminey if one does not actually have to live life like that. Of those that do and watch it, they will feel the “real pain” and empathise. Others will stay away from such movies because they don’t need some “jumped-up” pretend socially aware director to “try and show” a sort of existence they have no way of over-coming. They are the ones that the main-stream caters for as you are well aware. They do not have the patience or inclination to be tortured by movies that show them “how bad” their lives are. They go to the movies to escape their lives not to be reminded of them.

Give me Dil Bole Hadippa anytime. Now that’s the next good movie coming up.

Offer opinion but why ridicule the choices of others. Cinema is a broad term. It includes all types of films and genres. There is a place for everything.

I really didn’t like it so much. Using a string of expletives seems to be the order of the day. I hope the movie has more to offer than that. Everyone’s acting seemed ice cold to me- no zest, no zeal. Arshad Warsi makes me cringe now with his perpetual ‘lag riya hoon, keh riya hoon’. Out of the lot, I liked the little kid and the local goon ( reminded me of Gulshan Grover ). But it’s too early to comment on the movie as such. It most certainly has a touch of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid and ‘Bandits’.

    • yayaver yayaver says:

Cuss words add weightage to the statement..I think so, hence mostly used by everyone.Denial creates attraction..and denial of using a string of expletives is prohibited in gentleman’s talk, hence to bring dark character.. film maker use.Or, its just reflection of how real people talk in the society..

  40. SANTOSH SANTOSH says:

Come on why do people have a problem with cuss words that too only in Hindi films? I don’t see anyone complaining about swearing in English or Foreign language films! Grow up!!

    GD Star Rating

    • Jahanpanah Jahanpanah says:

Because the cuss words in English movies don’t make us cringe in the same way as the cuss words in our own language and that may be due to our conditionality. Sometimes I think does using crass words in the dialogues make it better? If it’s so then it’s the fault of the dialogue writers, they aren’t competent enough.
Indian Directors still have to go a long way. They may use all the cuss words in a movie and make it feel realistic but their real talent will be seen when they’ll be making truely beautiful movies a la Majid Majidi, Kieslowski etc., in their own style and not rehashing the style of different directors (AK?).

Wasn’t this trailer a giveaway ? I have a feeling that a part of the film was supposed to take the audience for a ride where he would never have suspected Vidya Balan of treachery or something….didn’t this trailer make a mess of that ?
But, saying that I guess most trailers are spoilers of some sort….so that shouldn’t be a complaint….
And btw, I really liked the trailer…thanks for sharing it, Anurag…hitting the right note with the trailer is never easy…this one probably went very close to that…
    @Aarti ji,
Sorry for getting pesonal, but you probably have a thing with expletives…otherwise these shouldn’t have struck you the wrong way…you know, I have seen quite a few movies which started off with people returning to their “gaaon”…. they never had these people speculating in this fashion :”Peepal per ke niche padenge aur nadi kinaare huggne jayenge…kya thandi thandi hawa lagegi pichhhwaaare mein….”

Seems like VB wanted to indulge his sidekick but didn’t quite manage to get the resouces together for an all out effort(otherwise why is BTM Vidya Belan in the film?) Even the title is an obvious reject from Omkara. (VB wanted to originally call it ISHAQ.)

I have mixed feelings about this. I felt (and its just me) that the Arshad Vashi-Vidya Balan intro scene was tacky to the core. I also felt that the trailer killed the intrigue element of the movie with too much information. The treatment looked promising but not the premise. But I have to say, loved the tongue and cheek dialogues (most of them) and Vidya Balan. Vidya Balan’s role reversal took me by complete surprise. So, yeah mixed feelings it is! But then again it is after all a VB production, if its not good, it can’t be that bad either. Looking forward to the movie!!

It didn’t evoke the kinda orgasmic reactions I thought it would after I read a few comments while @ work and then eventually watched the trailer last night. And is it just me, or does anyone else too feels that Naseer’s look is pretty tacky – I would have loved if Abhishek Chaubey had let him be with his silver mane and scruffy grey stubble…he would have still looked every bit the rouge..this look just doesn’t cut it for me..And yes, the trailer does give away the intrigue..or mayb AC and VB wanted to put down all their cards and then pull a fast one..who knows! :) The music though sounds nice..

While I welcome these terrific innovations in cinema by these directors, what is the obsession with obscenities? Why this need to imitate the western counter-parts who believe that liberal doses of f-bombs add a realistic touch to the movies? Was PARINDA or AGNEEPATH or SAHER less gritty because there were no expletives? We know that people liberally use expletives in Northern India’s rustic/semi-rustic locations. But does adding these to the screenplay really increase the richness of the content? The movie can have a realistic look and feel even without these expletives. On the one hand, you want to popularize ‘out-of-the-box’ movies by wishing that more and more people come and watch the movies and make them popular. On the other hand, you thrust in these obscenities in the movie that really repel a sizable chunk of the audience. I want my relatives, friends, to come and watch these movies with me but then, these things make them uncomfortable and hence, the audience is lost. My uncle, a HARDCORE fan of the parallel movement of the 70s and an English literature Prof, was anticipating watching OMKARA like crazy; one look at the previews and the liberal dosage of obscenities and he still hasn’t watched and probably never will. There is no doubt that some movies and the base on which they rest demand input of expletives, not ALL movies need that.

Before the ultra-liberal and left-leaning protagonists of passionforcinema.com start pouncing on me, please read and try to think sanely about what I am trying to say. I am NOT opposing ‘out-of-the-box’ approach to film-making. I am only opposing the unnecessary usage of certain elements in these movies.

Difficult to agree with what I say? Watch GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK and see what ‘reality’ in movies is and can be.

  64. AK,
Ever since Rajuben & Sankat City fiasco’s, I’ve started taking your recco’s with a dollops of salts.( a pinch is too little ). Having said that, I still love your work. It’s your recco’s which I am bit wary of.

What’s your claim to fame buddy? You’re cocky and behave as if you’ve achieved a name/place higher for yourself than the people/movies you so unabashedly put down. And even if that was the case ( VERY VERY VERY doubtful ), stop being insufferable.

      • Aarti ji,
My claim to fame is – I bought Ticket for Sankat City & I susbcribed to Sony TV. That gives me enough rights to bash both RB & SC unabashedly. As for my claim to fame, I do a choti moti naukri and support my family, pay tax to Govt & feed stray cats & dogs. Isn’t that good enough to make me human in your judge’mental’ eyes ?

Don’t classify people based on whether they are in limelight or their names gets flashed in newspapers & on celluloid. Stop being self appointed guardian of AK, and please next time Caps Lock thoda OFF kariyegaa. You don’t need to screm to make yourself heard.

I am glad you do. But so do they, so do we all. That alone is enough to demean someone? Think about it. As for the caps, I was being emphatic. Does not amount to screaming. Having said that, I really am in no mood to argue. Do what you will. I am not a fan of AK’s. Now say what you want to.

Hi Anurag. I’m sure Vishal gets it right this time again, though as a Producer this time, for a change. Kaminey will be forgotten and, more importantly, forgiven. Though it carries a bit of legacy from Omkara. But, that’s alright. Every maker has the right to inherit little legacy from his own flick in the past. Should hit the bull’s eye.

    Most importantly, an outstanding trailer.

By the way, any updates on your next, Girl in Yellow Boots? I see a synergy and business there; that we can discuss separately, only if you like.

I hope you guys might not get surprised, but i was….because one of my fav. movies with one of the finest directors in india turned out to be rip off from another hollywood movie. The movie I am talking about is MAQBOOL…I respected vishal bharadwaj and still do but i just thought why would he hide this fact when he is lifting a story all together and even copying a few scenes frame to frame…….

Dint expect that from him…turned out to be a shock for me when i watched that movie…i know MAQBOOL was much better then the originl hollywood movie but still atleat vishal could have mentioned…this is something i dont expect from people like him ,or anurag and many more.

    Just a thought…

anurag sorry if my remarks felt absurd to you,I was trying to hide the movies name to start another stupid controver here.
But rarely does a good student not satsify his beloved master.so here its is.I had the bad fortune to see a hollywood movie on a stupid day on a stupid channel(star movies) where they were trying to fill some time slots with some stupid movies, but the resemblance and then a few scenes seemed too familiar for me to stop watching it.and then the reality did hit me hard. I still say maqbool was a better version of “this movie”..but it was like i said adopted from a film and not macbeth.you yourself should see “men of respect” on IMDB or try to get its dvd, i am a film maker too, studied films, still drink them eat them sleep them but failed in converting my dreams to reality. even visited you when your were shooting dev d in delhi, felt too scared to meet you personally but knew ravi sir well.anyway i might be going offshoot here but you should see it yourself and i would appreciate your comment.
        thanks

but anyway you are better critic and a better judge to this problem…specially with the 3i controversy i dont know what should be called original, what is adopted and what is inspired by..when i saw men of respect i felt the resemblance but maybe its just me..and maybe that is how any macbeth adaptation is suppose to be like..but you tell me?
