During the hip-shaking days of Disco, a number of our music directors tried their hands to produce pure sounds of this genre. Apna own Sone ki Dukaan (Jewelry Shop) Bappi Lahiri was in the fore-front with soundtracks like Disco Dancer, Karate etc.

But no director was able produce a pure disco song that could give competition to the western stuff. There were always certain flaws that you would find in the songs. The song would fall off after a good intro, the chorus not might be so jandaar, excessive use of violin, singers would not be able to provide the energy or the melody was not catchy enough.

Before the launch of the album under spotlight in this post, only Kalyanji Anandji had produced a flawless Disco song for Qurbaani. Or so I thought till the time I did some back-ground research on the composer of the album in spotlight. It was he who composed this song and not Kalyanji Anandji.

The song was “Aap jaisa koi meri zindage mein aaye”. It was composed to remain a master-piece for all eternity.

The leading man of my article is a very gifted and talented musician. His name is Biddu and I have no clue as to what his complete name is.

In 1982, Biddu composed 8 absolute gems for his own production, aptly named “Star”. It had Kumar Gaurav in a leading role, with Rati Agnihotri, Raj Kiran, A.K. Hangal and Saeed Jaffery at his menacing best. Guest appearance by Padmini Kolhapuri.

I am delighted to share the gems of this movie with you. They are:-

“Boom Boom” pictured on Rati is played even today in various discos across the globe. Many re-mixes have come and gone but the original remains to be totally fabulous.

“Jaana” was not just was smooth as a silk but was picturised perfectly. It is one the best love duets of all time. The melody & tempo is such that it appeals to the young and old.

If you are feeling down and lousy, take some advice from Zoheb to gather courage for smiling on all your life problems. “Muskuraye jaa” has been sung with lot of conviction and you feel totally pumped up after listening to it. The lyrics have in-depth meaning and not just writtien for the heck of it.

Had the movie been produced in 1977, John Travolta would have been ecstatic to use this song in his movie, Saturday Night Live. If a disco king needs a song to call his own then “Oeei Oeei” is it. It has the charm and feel of a disco king.

Govinda would have been more likeable in his earlier movies had he danced to the tune of “Hae kya mera naam – Star”.

Listening to Nazia Hasan in “Khushi” brings a lot of khushi to your heart and soul. Nazia’s vocal going up and down like the Himalayas, is a tribute to the composer & speaks volumes of the lady’s singing ability..

“Dheere Dheere” can be called a clone of Biddu’s 70’s massive hit “Kung fu fighting”. In initial part of the song it sounds like Kung-fu but diverts to be different in latter half.

The best song of the movie is the “Zindagi”. It has been sung with so much passion and watching it on the screen actually makes you feel absolutely lousy for Kumar Gaurav as he has jut lost a friend.

What makes this album so special is that both Nazia & Zoheb have done a perfect job of singing. The lyrics were precise and choreography was done in a very tasteful manner. Even the movie is a make-you-feel-good types. The 2.5 hours were and are worth spent watching this flick.

It’s an absolute shame that our Indian audience rejected it. Guess, they like to watch bichde bhai in Kumbh mela or saas (mom-in-law) beating the shit out of bahu.

What is even more unfortunate is that when I had lost my tape, it took me two months to locate a fresh one. Of the 50 odd music shops I had gone to, except for one non one had ever heard of this album. All they could provide me were Disco Deewane or Young Tarang.

This is one album that should be in your collection. Your collection will always remain incomplete without it.

Star had good music. Was it not Biddu himself who produced the film himself. Vinod Pande had directed this film.

Sister- Brother Nazia and Zoheb Hasan had given a great promise but soon lost in time. Zoheb’s tere kadmon ko chumunga tu mujhe pass ane de was good in his non filmi album.
They came bit early. If they appeared little later in early 90s then they were having more appropriate scenes with exposure of cable TV, entry of Internet etc

I was amazed when I heard Nazia and Zoheb hassan’s album. It was in the 80’s and very different from what we were used to. The music of Star was quite a package! But, I must admit that the film did not do justice to the soundtrack. I dont think that the music failed but more that the music was badly let down by the film. Kumar gaurav was trying hard to get a footing after the initial success of love story and subsequent flops. Rati agnihotri was not the A+ league heroine despite the brilliant and successful Ek Duje Ke liye. So, while biddu and the hassan siblings gave us great music, the film was a disappointment.
I feel really sad when I think of how Nazia hossain passed away recently and the subesent drama that took place. She deserved better.
