It’s only words ….

Lyrics are the soul of any song..take them away the song is dead.
There are few songs which i constantly hear, even if i dont understand the meaning
completely or for that matter i have some different interpretation of the words ..these songs make
me nostalgic..make me smile.. make my eyes moist ….

1 ) Mera kuch samaan (Izaazat)

Gulzaar saab at its best. You can’t find better words then this to describe the feeling of a lonely
heart craving for someone’s love.To sing such a difficult song where in more of the words don’t
rhyme, you needed someone to translate the words into voice and Ashaji does complete justice
to Gulzaar saab’s lyrics.Someone asked me why is the word “samaan” used and should they have
used some more poetic word, the song would have been more beautifull .
I think that that’s the beauty of it..its more like a prose and not a poem……

Mera kuch saamaan tumhare paas pada hai
saavan ke kuch bheege bheege din rakhe hain
aur mere ik khat main lipti raat padi hai
woh raat bhulaa do, mera woh saamaan lauta do
mera kuch saamaan tumhaare paas pada hai

patjhad hai kuch … hai na ?
patjhad main kuch patton ke girne kee aahat
kaanon main ek baar pahan ke laut aai thee
patajhad ki woh shaakh abhi tak kaanp rahi hai
woh shaakh gira do, mera woh saamaan lauta do

Nothing can be more romantic then two lovers walking in a foggy evening with rain drizzling.Following lines beautifully capture this.Listen to these line and close your eyes and you will be transferred down the memory lane with your pehli barish with your pehla pyar.

ek akeli chhataree main jab aadhe aadhe bheeg rahe the
aadhe sookhe aadhe geele, sukha to main le aaye thi
geela mann shayad bistar ke paas pada ho
woh bhijwa do, mera woh saamaan lauta do

ek so sola chaand ki ratain ek tumhare kaandhe ka til
geeli mahendi ki khushbu, jhoot mooth ke shikwe kuch
jhooth mooth ke wade sab yaad karaa do
sab bhijwa do, mera woh saamaan lauta do

ek ijaazat de do bas, jab isko dafanaungi
main bhi wahi so jaungee
main bhi wahi so jaungee

Don’t try hard to understand this song or interpret it…just try and absorb the words …..and i can guarantee
you that they will bring back some of your fav memories.

2) Ghar Se Nikle The (Jagjit singh album : Aaina lyrics : Rajesh Reddy)

This one is not as famous as most of Jagjit Singh’s gazal’s,but i find it very close to my heart.
Soulful lyrics and mesmerizing voice of Jagjit Singh..you can’t ask for anything more …..It’s for those days
when you feel let down and lost and lonely.

Ghar Se Nikle The Hausala Karke,
Laut Aaye Khuda Khuda Karke,

dard-e-dil paoge waafa karke,
Hamne Dekha Hai Tajruba Karke,

Zindagi To Kabhi Nahi Aye,
Maut Aye Jara Jara Karke,

This stanza is the best of the lot :

Log Sunte Rahe Dimag Ki Baat,
Hum Chale Dil Ko Rhnuma Karke,

[[ Everyone kept listening to their head, and i followed my heart]]

Kisne Paya Sukun Dunia Me,
Zindagani Ka Samna Karke
Ghar Se Nikle The Hausala Karke,
Laut Aaye Khuda Khuda Karke,

[[ nobody has found peace after confronting life ! .... ]]

3) Awaarapan (film : Jism singer : KK Lyrics : Sayeed Quadri)

KK yet again nails that he is such a great singer.
Here is the last stanza from the song ..my fav one :

kaha kisi ke liye hai mumkin,
sabke liye ek sa hona ..
thoda sa dil mera bura hai ,
thoda bhala hai sene mein …..

Please add more song to this list so that we all are enlighten with songs that are not that famous but have beautiful words.

I think ‘mera kuchh samaan’ falls under famous category

Here are few lines from a not so famous song. I don’t think there is any other song in Hindi movies that expresses similar thought:

Meri nazrein haseen hain ke tum ho haseen
Ye samajhne ki mujhko zaroorat nahi
Baat nazron ki hai baat kuchh bhi nahi
Jisko dil chahe duniya mein hai wo haseen

    movie: Ek Musafir Ek Haseena
    Lyricist: I don’t know!

    Singer: Asha Bhosle

Agreed not completely. As u said “There are few songs which i constantly hear, even if i dont understand the meaning”. U cant listen if the song has peculiar music. I do agree the fact that we have the best lyricist like javed akhtar(arguably the best). However music too plays a major role.

    Anand,

If you are writing about the “Words”, make sure you get them right!!! specially when it comes to gulzar saab..

    >> woh raat bhulaa do, mera woh saamaan lauta do

should be “wo raat bujha do, mera wo saamaan.. ”

    >>jhooth mooth ke wade sab yaad karaa do
    >>sab bhijwa do

you know even a small miss can make hell a lot of difference.. a few years back someone asked him “sir ye kandhe qaatil kaise ho sakte hain (how could the shoulders be a killer.. he read kaandhe ka til as kaandhe kaatil).. so make sure you get it right, next time when you come up with a post on “words”

Hi anand, nice post bro, nice to see pple listening to and discussing words…
Mera kuch saman is actually a ‘Nazm’ which doest not have fixed meter and couplets, its a different form of poetry than a song or a ghazal. Its the most difficult one to compose – there is a famous anectdote that RD said after getting this song from gulzar “Ye kya hai, Kal to tum muje times of india ka article doge, to kya mujhe woh bhi compose karna padega ?”

    One more famouse nazm is…
“ek hi khwwab kai baar dekha hai maine, tune saari mein udas li hai meri chaabiya ghar ki…”
Sung by bhupinder, from film Kinara…again a RD gulzar combo.(Listen to it if u havent – its a must).
Plz listen to gulzar and bhupinder’s “woh jo shayar tha” and gulzar and vishal’s “budhe pahadon par” for more. These two non film albums are very rare but very good….

Some of my fav songs (not in any list, not necessarily unfamouse))

Pukaro mujhe naam le kar pukaro…
mujhe tum se apni khabar mil rahi hai…

Havao pe likh do havao ke naam
in anjaan pardesi o ka salam

zindagi khwaab hai, khwaab main jhuth kya
aur bhala sach hai kya…sab sach hai

    phir se aaeeyo, badaraa bidesee
    tere pankho pe, motee jadoongee
    bhar ke jaaeeyo, humaaree talayyaa
    mai talayyaa, kinaare miloongee
tuze mere kaale kamaleewaale kee saun

    zihal-e-miski mukum-ba-ranzish bahal-e-hijra bechara dil hai…
sunai deti hai kiski dhadkan, tumhara dil ya humara dil hai…

mujhe le chalo aaj fir us gali mei
jaha pehle pehle ye dil ladkhadaya…

kisi aasman pe to saahil milega,
main laane wohi aasma jaa raha hu

dikhayi diye yun, ki bekhud kiya,
hume aapse bhi juda kar chale…
parastish ki yaa tak ki e but tuje
nazar mein sabhu ki khuda kar chale…

chale ekbaar fir se ajanabi ban jaaye hum dono..

chin-o-arab hamara, hindosta hamara..rehne ko ghar nahi hai…sara jahan humara…

chashma utaro fir dekho yaaro, duniya nayi hai chehra purana…

tumhe ho na ho,mujako to itna yakin hia,
mujhe pyaar tumse, nahi hai nahi hai…

waha kaun hai ter musafir, jaega kahan,
dum le le ghadi bhar ye chhaiya paega kahan…

    gulmahor gar tumhara naam hota…

sili hava chhoo gayi, sila badan chhil gaya…

Indeed.. Bip’s Phoonk de was the most “Intervening” song in the film.. :)

BTW NS was initially planned as a No song film.. Probably gulzar saab intervened and told “No.. it has to have a few songs”.. To me NS Soundtrack is simply one of the best in 2007..

BTW what kind of lyrics you would have preferred Vishal to opt for the songs?
“O meri cigerette rani, main tumse pyar karta hoon,
dil jigar, nazar sab tumhari hai, tumhare bina main jee nahin sakta :) “.. it would have surely suited the script anyway..

BTW KKC, Dusk, Oso, Saw.riya,Guru, TzP, JBJ, CDI all left behind after a few hundred listenings..

NS still playing on.. Kash lagaa!

    @Anand,

I presented the same mathematics to gulzar saab (of 4 months minus 4 amaavas) about 10 years back when I met him for the first time.. He bluntly said “No.. its not 4 months.. Mujhe 116 ke aage ki ginati nahin aati thi, isliye wahin pe ruk gaya”

116 signifies the count that she remembers spending with Mahendra… she has treasured each and every moment of it and keeping a count.. If I say I know Anand Kadam since 97 days (rather than some time or about three months) That 97 signifies the my Bond and closeness with Anand Kadam.. The count/maths signifies how I much value meeting Mr. Kadam..

It could have been 77 or 127 or 144 in the song keeping the same context but for gulzar saab the “sound of words” also plays an important part while selecting the words to fit in…

    @Mini (13)

That is a Macro sized statement. Mini if you get time then you should make a post on No Smoking so that people may know why you keep this kind of opinion.

    —-
Hardly anyone can find songs matching with the environment of the film in a way as songs (lyrics and composition) can be found in No Smoking.

Songs bring philosohphical heights to the film.
Songs were required or not or how they are picturised and where they are used in the film, these factors can be debatable but quality of lyrics of songs and composition is of first grade. As nobody has ever written such songs so its useless to even compare that so and so could have written better lyrics. These are unique lyrics in hindi cine history.

    1) Ash Tray
bahotase aadhe bujhe huye din pade hai isamein
bahotasi aadhi jali huyi raatein gir padi hai
yeh ash tray bharati ja rahi hai
    …..
    …….
    na haath daalo
ki waqt se chhile huye lamho ki raakh garm hai
ungaliyaan jalengi, yeh Ash Tray puri bhar gayi hai !

    (2) kash laga, ………
    jindagi ai kash laga
    hasraton ki raakh uda
yeh jahaan phaani hai, bulbula hai, paani hai
bulbulon pe rukna kya, paaniyon pe behta ja, behta ja ——

    (3) jab bhi cigrate jalati hain, main jalata hoon
aag pe paanv padata hai, kambakht dhuyein mein jalta hoon
    ….

phir kisine jalaayi ek diyaasa laayi
aasmaan jal utha hai, shaam ne raakh udaayi
uplein jaisa sulgata hoon, kambakht dhuyein mein jalta hoon

kadwa jo dhuaan woh nigalata hoon, kambakht dhuyein mein jalta hoon
jab bhi cigrate jalati hain, main jalata hoon

BTW that was penned before the release of the film without watching it..

    The extended meaning to me..

The song has a loud sarcastic tone.. about life and the love for cigarette.. the one who loves cigarette doesn’t care for life as much.. Despite knowing that his brother’s life is in danger if he gonna smoke, K smokes in front of inspector.

“Kash Lagaa…” Who cares for the life, nothing is eternal.. Kash lagaa (Ye jahaan faani hai , bulbula hai paani hai).. Maut to kele ke chhilke se bhi aa sakti hai (as shown in the song)

Chapaye char jaaynge, jungle ki kyaariyaan hain
Pagdandiyon pe milna, do din ki yaariyaan hain..

jungle ki kyaariyaan represents belongings, relations…. which are bound to end (after developing a flower bed, it can be eaten by livestocks, so let the life be carefree.. as safachat like a pagdandi.. do din ki yaariyaan signifies about his relationships (with brother) why care for him, let him die.. Kash lagaa.. )

  44. axw11 axw11 says:

my thoughts were like the song was more of a satire on Passive smoking….like “K” smoking in the station and his brother dying in the hospital….not due to his non existent lung but coz of slipping on the banana leaf….something like people blaming a smoker that u r killing them by passive smoking when the person could die by any other ways….so the song made sense by saying bulbulon pe rukna kya…paniyon pe behta jaa…..also made sense by “K” mentioning that his bro was in Germany i.e. far away from him….I thought it was something like live life….coz the world as well as u r gonna end….bulbulon pe rukna kya…paniyon pe behta jaa…

    just my interpretation….

    Woh kab tak intezar karti
Kohre mein khada hua pul to nazar aa raha tha
Lekin uske sire nazar nahin aate the
Kabhi lagta uske donon sire ek hi taraf hain
Aur kabhi lagta is pul ka koi sira nahin hai
Shaam bujh rahi thi aur aanewale ki koi aahat nahin thi kahin
Neeche behta dariya keh raha tha
Aao mere aaghosh mein aa jaao
Main tumhari badnaami ke saare daag chhupa loon
Mitti ke is shareer se bahut khel chuke
Is khilone rang ab utarne lage hain

Nadi mein itna hai pani sab dhul jayega
Matti ka tila hai yeh ghul jayega

Anand wanted junta to post lyrics.
Anyway I’ll post this verse from Pyaasa written by Sahirji:

Main phool taank raha hun tumhare joode mein
Tumhari aankh massarat se jhukti jaati hai
Na jaane aaj mein kya baat kehne wala hun
Zaban khushk hai aawaz rukti jaati hai
    Khayal-o-khwaab ki parchhaiyaan ubharti hain
Mere gale mein tumhari udaas baahein hain
Tumhare hothon pe mere labon ke saaye hain
Tumhe yakeen ke hum ab kabhi na bichhadenge
Mujhe guman ke hum milke bhi paraye hain
    Khayal-o-khwaab ki parchhaiyaan ubharti hain

Though I have more than one reason to like this verse, it is interesting to see how it starts on a happy note but ends on a sad one.

I do not quite now what to make of unbridled adulation for SS Gulzar on this forum. He is an astounding image-maker bulk of whose work is still rooted within the extended melodramatic tradition of Urdu and Punjabi poetry. I say ‘extended’ because his verses do display an urbanite’s desire to open up onto the spaces of modernity and at times even post-modernity but lack and severely lack in a reflective/ philosophical relationship with such spaces. Even as a reflection of the lived, his poems do not sound too convincing. For, these spaces are not exclusively negotiable through shocking, unexpected or haunting images even if how you use the language is important especially in relation to modernity. I am not convinced of his greatness as a genuine lyricist of our times.

However, my comment was meant, right or wrong, to be read in reference to NS. I still maintain, the lyrics reflect a dried up melodramatic streak and try desperately to pass off as genuine existential angst. They detract from the essential argument of the film. This is not to say that that the film would have improved substantially without SSG’s lyrics. As for VB’s music for NS, it remains to me hugely disappointing especially as I am an admirer of VB’s musical ’styling’. Thats my opinion and I realize that I may be wrong. So save your breath!

As for SSG’s admirers extolling his ‘ash-trays’ et al, it may come as somewhat of a disappointment to them to note that such references to cigarettes and smoking abound in the Punjabi poetry of the late 50s and 60s.

When Ghalib had said or written
“Honge duniya mein sukhanwar bahut achche
kehte hain ki Ghalib ka hai andaje bayan aur”
then dont know if he was knowing that he was creating a verse of univeral value.
    Same applies for Gulzar also.

Though to each of his/her own is true but from your nicely constrcuted comment, its not clear that all the objections you are trying to portray there, how they make SS Gulzar a weak creator.

When you know so much about Panjabi Urdu literature then you will be knowing difference between the areas also. Gulzaar is a creator who makes bridge between literature and visual medium and he is not specialist of one particular area like many authors become when they wish to explore that area deeply.
Gulzar fills the gap so that literature of Nirmal Verma kind of philosophical and relationship based authors can be converted in to the visual medium.
So when he writes his lyrics then he is not mere a poet, he is creating visuals also through his words.
If name of Sahir will be mentioned then you can have theory about his roots also. He also could be lacking to represent truely your Panjabi Urdu UTOPIA.
Gulzar or any creator can not be criticized so easily for the areas where they dont work or work which they dont know. They should be judged on the basis of what they have been doing.
Please bring those side boundaries in your criticism and then put them on stake.
As of now, there is some lacking, (knowingly or unknowingly) in your understanding and hence in explaination.

I wasn’t referring to any Punjabi-Urdu poetic utopia. The poetry that I was refering to isn’t the greatest of Punjabi poetry. In fact, it is hugely embarrassing in its melodramatic self-profiling. And I hold no brief for those lachrymose verses. So that settles a point – at least partially, for me.

I do like the poetry of quite a few of the film lyricists and Sahir is certainly one of them. I also like Majrooh and Shailendra – occasionally Kaifi as well. I believe that Javed Akhtar is a better structurally grounded poet than Gulzar. But Gulzar’s images are way way ahead of Javed’s. But Gulzar has a tendency to now and then slip in inexplicbly shoddy images to damage his otherwise reasonably good poems.

For me, Prasoon and Swanand are exciting new signatures on the horizon of the film music. Piyush Mishra, on the other hand, remains pretentitious. But the guy has talent. He may eventually produce great stuff some day.

    @Mini (79),
You have touched a good area with your meaningful comment.
Gulzar’s poetry does not leave listener’s mind in idle phase if one has given, knowingly or unknowingly, attention to the words he has written then they will not leave the listener at that point only and s/he will have to think what song is trying to portray or where its heading and that way his songs are always live. They may not settle the score as far as rhythm or meter is concerned but words have deeper meaning and no word is used just for the sake of keeping rhythm or tukbandi in the songs.
Many other lyricist follow this trend that they fix the words in to the tune and it appeals to ears of listeners also but listenining is finished as soon as line or song is finished and there is no after thought.
For example: Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga jaise van mein hiran jaise this and that. Listener likes the wonderful tune created by RDB, mind likes the similies provided by Javed Saab but song does not carry listener’s mind on visual journey where imagination power is also used and ultimately its fulfilled. Song is there and you listen it and meaning is finished with listenting and they dont have further journey where listener may search more meanings. Bring Gulzar in such scenario and song may not be that rhytmatic but words will carry listener where HE will have to think, Ohh this is so wonderful metaphor, this is rhetorical this is going beyond our imagination limit. So Gulzar saab’s songs fulfil educational purpose also and as they force listener to really think ahead.
Gulzar saab writes “kavita” and not always strictly a “Geet” while others always write “Geets”.

    RK ,

Gulzaar saab’s lyrics has a lot of metaphor …but i think Javed’s saab lyrics reach the masses …listen to yeh tara woh tara from swades .. …even if it doesn’t have mind-boggling lyrics ..but it traslates such a good message thru simple words ..thats the beauty of Javed saab’s..he reaches out to the masses..on the other hand Gulzar saab is a genious but i don’t think common man understands them …
i like both of them..but gulzar saab is my fav :)
