JAAGO MOHAN PYAARE!
JAAGO MOHAN PYAARE!
“It is very easy to criticise anyone’s work than doing the actual work”.
The old and experienced players of hindi cinema…started their career by redefining the rules of typical bollywood film making. But some how lost their golden touches, cinematic abilities, and trapped in their own success and intelligence. They are thinking they are making right stuff and are with new generation of film making. But they might don’t know there are many dark horses trying to make films in their own way and if so called genius film makers would not wake out from dreams,…. they might go for long sleep.
* J.P. DUTTA- started with bang- Ghulami. But confined in his own brilliance. Prisoned in desert, thakurs and revenges(Batwaara, Kshatriya). Somehow reborn in Border but again captured in the same prison of long songs, wars and cross border issues. Umrao Jaan was like doordarshan serial. Though his shot taking technique and handling of emotions is brilliant and glimpses of it were seen in Refugee and LOC-Kargil but that is not enough. He must come up with new subjects and treatments which can match the level of Ghulami, Hathyar or even Border.
* RAHUL RAWAIL- Like J.P. Dutta he also started with bang- Betaab. Arjun was his career best and Biwi O Biwi gave his proof of talent. The umbrella action sequence of Arjun was most memorable scene of 80s. But then nobody knows what happened to this talented and one of the 80s prominent directors. In 90s came up with mediocre movies like Bekhudi, Aur pyaar ho Gayaa and Arjun Pandit. His 2005 flop Jo Bole So Nihaal was his baddest movie ever and I thought “issse jyaada kharaab movie Raahulji nahi de sakte” but then Budhdha mil gaya happened. It was worse then his previous movie and I could not believe that the same director had made Arjun.
* VIKRAM BHATT- Ghulam was his career best. Kasoor, Raaz were desi version of English films… but somehow convincing with good efforts. Without Johnny Lever and Paresh Rawal and Neeraj Vora’s dialogues, Aawara Paagal Deewana was supposed to be pathetic. Ankahee and Aitbaar were little relief but Elaan, Inteha, Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage, Deewane Huye Paagal, Red, Life mein kabhi kabhi…… and latest Speed (desi Cellular) all were pathetic. I wonder how he managed to convince people to invest on his scripts?
* N. CHANDRA- He was also prominent directors of 80s. Started with Nana Patekar’s one of the best film Ankush. Then again the came up with same subject “the anger against system” in Pratighaat. Convinced. His most successful Tezaab was on the same line but more entertaining and technically sound. Narsimha was first step on his road to losing his karishma. Hamlaa, Yugandhar, Tejaswini, Shikari were below average. Wajood was convincing but did not regenerate his old karishma. The he changed his style and Style happened. Double meaning and cheap comedy became his new style. Excuse me was also of the same genre. Kagaar based on life of encounter specialist was his worst film ever. What he is directing now… don’t know, but he should use this free time to refresh himself.
* VIDHU VINOD CHOPRA- People know him by critically acclaimed and box office successful Parinda. Parinda was his career best. Then 1942 a Love story was somewhat above average but the main reason was Panchamda’s music. Then he also prisoned in his FTIIan geniusness. Kareeb was an average though music was good. Mission Kashmir was more of action and star vehicle. But his last Eklavya was major disappointment. He took almost 5 years to write the script and shoot. And he made a film which proved that vinod chopra does not consider people while making films and leaves in his own world. He is a good producer and gave chance to talented Rajkumar Hirani and Pradeep Sarkar…. Also he is making technically brilliant movies….but his directorial abilities are vanishing with his coming movies. Hope he would learn from his assistants and get true passion of making a good and believable movie.
* FEROZ KHAN- the director of Dharmatma, Qurbaani, Janbaaz, Dayaavaan…. lost his touch while making Prem Aggan- what a trash acting, trash story, full ang pradarshan. though music was good… audience doubted on feroz khan on his directorial capabilities. Then again with Fardeen Khan he came up with Jaanasheen. Worse than Prem Aggan. I don’t want to write about it. Now he is making remake of his won Super hit Qurbaani. Nayee Qurbaani kahin fardeen Khan ki career ki Qurabaani na le le?
* KUNDAN SHAH- Director of one of the best comedies of Hindi Cinema. His second Directorial venture Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa was SRK’s one of the best performances. Then box office successful Kyaa Kehna happened. Average movie. Hum to Mohbaat Karega was not tolerable even on TV. Dil hai tumhara was again average. Ek Se Badhkar Ek was one of the third class comedies of hindi cinema. I doubt Kundan Shah himself directed the gems “Jaane bhi do yaaron” and “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa”.
* ABBAS MASTAN- What happened to this so called thriller “Khiladi, Baazigar and Daraar” directors? Humraaz was their career’s best but then Taarzan was highly disappointing. Aitraaz was poor DISCLOSURE and 36 china town was saved by Paresh Rawal, Johnny lever and Himesh Reshammiya. Latest Naqaab was copied from English movie (as usual his last 5 films) and not up to the level. They should just see latest thrillers Johnny Gaddar and Manorama Six feet under and reincarnate themselves. Just get out of big houses, videshi locations, designer costumes… come to India, watch good thriller books (like Ashwini Bhatt or Harkishan Mehta’s thriller novels as you are Gujarati) and then make a convincing thriller.
* PRIYADARSHAN- Gardish, Kaala Paani, Viraasat, Hera Pheri are proof of his geniusness. But do you remember his last 5 films? He is giving 2-3 hits every year which are merely bad remakes of classic south Indian movies. He has also turned to double meaning cheap comedies by giving Bhaagambhaag and Dhol. Priyanji… just take break from comedies… and if you still want to make remakes then give some time for script and then shoot. Don’t make every film in Bhagambhaag style which are checking people’s mental ability to tolerate your movies. If you continue to make this cheap comedies, then public might put you in Bhool Bulaiyaa from where you can not come out.
* MAHESH MAJAREKAR- Nidaan and Aiee(Marathi) were his honest efforts. Vaasatav was his hunger to get success and also a good movie. Astitva was also proof of his talent. Kurukshetra was average. Then one by one trashes like Padma shree Laloo prahsa yadav, tera mera saath rahin, ehsaas, Rakt…. and lots many. Virudhdha gave little relief. But his last Waah Life ho to aisi!… even children did not like it. Such a childish treatment. Perhaps he wants to make his career in acting and he is good at it. If he wants only acing then he should leave direction and forgive us.
* DAVID DHAWAN- Agreed he struggled lot before giving Govinda’s career best Shola aur Shabnam and Aahkhen which can be considered as total bollywood masala paisa vasool entertainment. Then he maintained his comedy quality in Coolie No.1, Saajan Chale Sasural but meanwhile losing his touch in Judwaa, Gharwali Baharwali, Hum kisise se kum nahin, Mujse shaadi karogi…. And lots of craps. Though his movies are getting box office success but no touch of its 90s hit movies is seen in his latest movies. If he will 2-3 give more this kind of movies then he must be thrown out by public. His last good film was Kyon ki main Jhooth nahin boltaa though it was copy of Liar, Liar. If he can not give original stuff then must give quality copy from English films.
* SUBHASH GHAI – His strategy was to use most salable stars of respective times (Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixt after Tezaab, Akshay khanna after Border, Hrithik after kaho naa pyaar hai, SRK after DDLJ, Vivek after Saathiya), add some good music and mediocre story and superb marketing… and the film is hit. But the strategy is not working any more because the script is going below below mediocre level. He was good at making good commercial masala movies and we highly appreciated that. But yaadein was boring and stratched. Kisna was little better than yaadein much below the level of Karma, Vidhaata, Saudagar, Ram Lakhan, Paredes or even Taal. He has given truly entertaining good movies like Karz, Kali Charan, Vidhata, Hero… but shifted his focus to NRI kind of movies (Paredes, Yaadein, Taal) and so lost his original desi touch. Just take break from marketing whilstling woods, go through your old 80s work and literature and come again for film making.
So DEAR SIRs, we know that you are genius and some glimpses of your geniusness were also seen in your latest movies but on the whole your some of the last movies were pathetic. We know that it is not easy to make a good movie, but as you are film makers… and not trying to come out of your comfort zone, not trying to do something different, then please forgive us if we do not take pain to watch your movies. We appreciate your efforts if your film shows that you tried hard or trying to create something satisfying, no matter your film is not good, but sorry… most of your last films did not show your any efforts. If you feel that after 5-6 movies, the creativity goes down, then just see works of Rajkumar Santoshi, Prakash Jha or even Rakesh Roshan. It is not that they are giving classics all the time but every time they are giving good convincing movies. If they give a pathetic film then their next movie is going to be satisfying at certain level that we forgive his pathetic movie. You already know that how it is difficult for a new director to make a movie. You all are established and producers still have trust in you even after so many flops and below average movies you are giving. Please wake up from the sleep and give us good films which would give us satisfaction for our money and time. May this new year, give you whole new life to your career and movies. Please… “JAAGO MOHAN PYAARE!”.

VERY NICE POST
yeah even i feel the same…but the sad part is that still a Bhool Bhullaiya works, a Partner works..i think there should be a major change in the liking of movies of the people…only then will these fame n money hungry genius’ will make better films…
Well
I think that Khiadi was Abbas Mastan’s best film
I am fully agree about rest of the post.
@SKF ..totally agreed
Ramu is missing from the list !
vikram bhatt is probably worst of this lot !.even his best effort “Ghulam” was a rip-off of “on the waterfront”, which incidentally his uncle mahesh bhatt made as “Kabzaa” in the 80s . Dont think that guy has the capacity to dish out something good and original .Also , With “speed” vikram bhatt has the unique distinction of delivering 10 flops in a row ! ..like you i keep wondering who finances his movies :)
only disagreement is with ur comment on vidhu vinod chopra
I think Eklavya was a nice movie
his movie kareeb can be termed as a disappointment
I would say Mahesh bhatt should have also been in the list…after making really good movies like Arth,saransh,Zhakhm…..he is now busy promoting sleazy movies of Imran hashmi ….
@sudeep
i second that . including vv chopra in the list is little harsh .the guy has directed 6 movies so far , 2 of which can be considered classic (parinda, khamosh) , 2 were just about average (1942 and mission kashmir) ,1 was lousy (kareeb) . havent seen his debut feature sazaa-e maut or was it umar khaid yet ??
and yes i agree Ekalavya is a good film .
Vikram Bhatt is just a pain. I seriously dunno who funds his movies.. One director I always liked was Pankaj Parashar. what a classic Jalwa was. His movies were different though I did not see his last effort Benaras. and where did Shashi Lal Nair of “Angaar” fame disappear. I liked their movies growing up.
Ghai Saheb plzz plzzz get out of your NRI hangover let Karan take care of it and we r waiting for ur nxt movie
I feel each word is to the point…
but a bit softer would have been not very hurting
Good post but disagree on Eklavya. Lovely movie.
Dear Shailesh
Cinema is a creative art…Even if it’s not a creative art, it’s not possible to always be the best and to be at the top in any field forever…But especially when you are dealing with creative art it is hard to give the world what this world thinks is the best…Even Leonardo Da Vinci could give us only one “Monalisa”. But hats off to all these people you mentioned in the post…and many more (which were not mentioned), that they at least gave something, about which we are talking and discussing here on pfc.
When we say “every dog has its days” then we talk about everyone including us. This thing has happened with every creative person - Dev Anand, Vijay Anand, Kamal Mmrohi, Raj Kapoor etc…..Cause this is the reality and that is what is life.
Sanjay
Sanjay Malhotraji, thajks for your comments.
the above mentioned directors have given very good movies in past… but now they have become stereotyped. they do not try something new or different. Even their latest films do not show any or their hard work.
So as a true cinema fan these feeeling came out.
Anand Kadam: mahesh bhatt has retired from direction after his last “Kartoos”. so he is not mentioned.
Very nice post shailesh…..
i am completly agree with u except ur comment
about Vidhu Vinod Chopra…….Eklavya ek bahut acchi film thi, jisme vidhu ji ne apni brillience dikhayi thi, kuch kamiyan script ke sath thi bt ye kahin se nahi laga ki vidhu ji ne apna touch kho diya ho.
Vikram bhatt ke bare me to meri ye rai hai ki uske andar kabhi bhi ek brillent director wali baat nahi thi, unhone jo ghulam banai thi wo unke apne hi uncle( Mahesh Bhatt) ki 80s me banai hui film Kabzaa ka remake thi aur mujhe to iss me bhi doubt hai ki Ghulam bhi inhone hi direct ki bhi thi ya nahi. aur rahi baat Vinod chopra ji ki….. he is still one of the best director among with Rajkumar Santoshi, Sanjay Lella Bhansali And Vishal Bhardwaj and he can never loose his touch he is a perfectionist.
Another director for the list is Rajiv Rai , he made entertaining flicks like yudh ,tridev , mohra, gupt but lost it later and churned out such trash like Asambhav, Pyar ishq aur mohabbat.
Wonder what he’s up to now
