Jaane bhi do yaaro..[Do].. Aane bhi do yaaro?
It was exactly 25 years back in 1983, when India had one of the most defining moment of our sporting history by winning the cricket world cup and we have been still cherishing that moment till date year after year.. In the same year bollywood gave us a small yet significant film filled with moments to cherish forever… To me the film is a landmark and path breaking one, considering that none of the big producers/houses/banners backed it.. None of the big star cast was associated with the film. The production unit was lacking budget even for the important props (The hero had to get his own personal camera for shooting, which eventually got stolen during the shooting..).. The cast had mostly new-comers and crew had mostly strugglers.. but despite all odds, There was a UNIT and a perfect team.. Very similar to the world cup winning team of 1983… and eventually the team came out as a winner when they delivered the final product.. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.. Like world cup winning team of 83, it is still difficult to point out one single name in the team of JBDY responsible for the success..
While watching the film one can make out, the timing, the improvisations, the combined team efforts, the real joy of working and the desire to make one good honest film.. “Honge Kaamyaab Ek Din” was not only the theme song for the two leading protagonists but also for each and everyone in the cast and crew….
Have seen it umpteen times and still feels its not finished and can watch it as many times in the life time.. Thats the magic of JBDY….
25 years later, 2008, a big production house (Nadiadwala’s) is coming up with a JBDY.Do [Two] sequel (or a remake not sure) of the same film to cash on the name JBDY has created in so many years (one of the most sold film on VCD/DVD circuit I believe).
The good news is that they have been trying to retain the same team and possibly Kundan Shah is directing it with Naseer in lead.. The bad news is the same as the good one..
Even the news of the remake/sequel is a Bad one for a JBDY lover like me.. I believe with a big budget and grand production values, JBDY 2 would never be the same even with almost the same team…. The two prominent contributors of original JBDY unit will be missed sorely.. Editor Renu Saluja and Bhakti Barve… Although most of the cast and crew are more familiar name today but have seen the graph coming down for many of them (barring Naseer, Pankaj, Om Puri)… The flames have dimmed a bit… so as the desire to prove to the world “Hone Kaamyaab ek din”..
And the odds are not going to be the same… Will it be the same passionate effort at film making.. I fear it wont… I fear the Nadiadwala’s would end up with a Parody of JBDY…
For nadiadwala’s
aap dastaane pahankar chhuu rahe haiN aag ko
aap ke bhi khuun ka rang ho gaya hai saaNwlaa
and for JBDY lovers
kya wazah hai pyaas jyaada tez lagti hai yahaN
log kehte haiN ki pehle is jagah par tha kuaaN
What do you say? Aane bhi do yaaro?
or
Who cares.. Jaane bhi do yaaro…

So Naidiwala is going to take the crew to LA or Dubai to shoot a song with strippers? Nah… they should not do it! Not with Naidiwala producing the film!
Rightly Said Honhaar Goonda. Sajid taking on ones of the greatest Black Comedies ever made in India. Shit..He is going to have Akshay Kumar do a heroic scene in the last stage and jump from 4 floors and save the damsel (Satish Shah as Draupadi) from harm..Sheesh. It will be much better if they leave it alone. I mean, Hera Pheri was a good movie and all they could do with Phir HP was to copy amazingly from Lock, Stock..
I sincerely hope this is just a marketing hoopla and they leave a Good movie alone.
you know what, he and the directorsof his have tried to recapture the magic the end scene of “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron” in all his films, and that could be the main reason for remaking the film. He might want to do that scene on a grand scale in Australia…!
@Pavan,
who will replace Bhakti Barve? Lilet Dube or Suhasini Mule? Sarika, Tabu? or ultimately Ratna Pathak Shah will join her husband?
Naseer saab and Om Puri saab are not same and Ravi Vasvani is not seen for years. Only Pankaj Kapoor is going miles and miles even now. Satish Shah also is able to maintain his own standard. So in acting department, it will be interesting to see, if both Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri are still able to bring that kind of performances.or they bring new heights or not.
Let audience see how Mr Kundan Shah deals with the glorious past and that to his own past. some of the members of that group has already tasted the effort and have made parodies dealing with old time cinema and hope Mr Shah does succeed in recreating the vitality which was in original one and it does not look a parody of JBDY-1.
All the best to director and producer. Then Director and his team had less money and now they will be given money in surplus, so lets see the fact that funds affect the quality of a film or not. :)
aane bhid o yaaro ..
even if the remake fails ..it will raise the bar of JBDY …and if it succeeds it will be a tribute to the original ..so let it come baby …
RK ..
Ratna Pathak Shah is a fab actor …she was superb in that tv serial called filmi chakkar with Satish shah …:)
@Pavan,
Just recalled Anuradha Patel Singh, who has perhaps started again taking films. She and Amrita Singh can also extend their application for the role.
@Anand, yes Mrs Ratna Shah is very good actress and her talent has not been yet utilized by hindi cinema. She brings a difference in comedy but there can be many other shades in her acting pool which audience have to see and they should be explored now.
@RK,
Anuradha Patel was last seen in Dus Kahaniyaan.. My vote would go to Shobha De (She could act.. as herself… as originally the Khabardaar editor’s role was created around her)
How about KK and Irfan Khan can replacing Naseer and Ravi Waswani… Om Puri and Pankaj Kapoor can play their roles even in their hundredth year.. One of my favorite character in the film was Satish Kaushik (as Ashok Nambudaripad)..
-Saleem ke hote hue Anarkali aur kisi ke saath naheen jaa sakti, “Good morning Sir!”
@Pavan,
Ya I saw her in one of the story in Dus Kahaniyan.
Shobha De will be good and she will be able to compete her old buddy Bahana (Shabana) in acting field also. Was this character not created around Devyani, another film journalist who was quite poopular among hindi cine male actors also?
—
Ranveer Shorey along with Irfan Khan can be better in those roles. KK may not go for this kind of bufoonery.
Satish kaushik has always been a treat to see. I had read he had played a lead role in an english film where he had played lead role of a bangladeshi person. any Idea what happened to the film?
RK ..
the Satish Kaushik’s film is Brick lane ..here it is :
http://imdb.com/title/tt0940585/
@Anand,
Thanks, had no info that it has been released. Will try to search it.
Another Significant and memorable performance by Satish Kaushik is Salesman Ramlal (Based on Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman… am not sure if he is still performing this one (specially after taking up Direction)
@RK,
I meant KK for the role of Naseer.. Like naseer without being much animated he could carry off well even the comic scenes..
@Pavan
(12)= Is this film or play? if its play, video exists in this universe?
(13)= It will certainly be a challenging role for KK. He has not done anything like this before.
my reservations -
KK prefers too subtle ways to portray and he has to lose all sophisticated charm from his performance and has to behave like a good but stupid person. How he will keep his brain out of this kind of performance? Ideally film should have lesser explored actors.and those who look younger also.
Can we see any good thing towards such scripts if same age group actors are taken in remake also though that rules out the majority of actors of original film. But similar script demands comparatively new actors.
Deepak Dobriyal = Ravi Vasvani’s role
Shreyas Talpade = Naseer’s role
Ranveer Shorey = Pankaj Kapoor’s role
Vinay Pathak = Satish Kaushak’s role
Boman Irani = Om Puri’s role
Manoj Joshi = Satish Shah’s role
Konkana Sen = Bhakti Barve’s role
and Vijay Raj, Sanjay Mishra, Manoj Pahwa in different roles.
:-?
Its only Once in a while a film like JBDY quietly sneaks upon us,it was perhaps one the last clean comedies to come out of Bollywood,the trend having being initiated by Hrishikesh Mukeerji in the 70’s…He needs a post too…
Remaking JBDY:-? How do you remake a comedy?
Can you laugh at a joke you’ve already heard?
I suppose the story line will be drastically altered,the jokes more contemporary(read more corny),the familiar title will perhaps be the only draw for the audiences and the cast definately won’t consist of newcomers.
Pavan: I hope just the idea of sequel inspires some real humour. JBDY hit me one evening when I was about 10 and I sat in front of the screen with some jhaal-muri and watched Naseer speak on phone “code hai Albert Pinto ho gussa kyun aata hai”. Since then I might have watched it over 10-15 times and I can say that it’s satire at its best in hindi cinema.
nahiiiiiiiiiiii mujhe (RGV ki) Aag mein mat daalooooooo
Guys, i dont think remaking/making a sequel to a very very VERYYYYYYYYY successful/good thing be a good idea… It would simply be an attempt at increasing the masala/entertainment content of the previous attempt (as is the case with most sequels/remakes)…
I can only think of ’sequel in theme’ rather than a real sequel in terms of same/similar characters being extended/replayed. I would like another Black Comedy type movie actually, but dont think it can be created like that…
But still, I would really really like Kundan Shah to get back to what he does best (i.e. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa/JBDY) instead of like what he has been doing recently (ofc KHKB isnt black comedy, but it is light/SENSIBLE comedy)…
But hey, what would be wrong with KK in PANKAJ KAPUR’S role (instead of Naseeruddin Shah’s…) i think that would be pretty suited
hmmm..sajid nadiadwala training his eyes on JBDY..so basically we will have a movie shot in cape town or the gold coast (or some location where their travel agency has a discount currently)
salman and akshay will play the protagnists who are very poor and wear armani clothes and sport rolex watches.
half hour extra footage for introduction songs which will have lots of beach and cleavage shots; everybody wearing colour co-ordinated clothes which also matches with the background but has nothing to do with the movie content.
Paresh raval will play the role of D’Mello which may be the only redeeming factor in the entire movie.
being a comedy it will be directed by david dhavan or sajid khan; both of whom equate comedy with lots of corny jokes about gays, sexuality and eve teasing. off course the word subtle never figures in their dictionary.
JBDY is one of the greatest comedies to have ever come out of india. and this news of remake has been the saddest news that i have heard in a long time.
I think Kundan Shah himself would not be able to create magic of that old gem. rememeber ek se badhkar ek, hum to mohabbat karega….
Shailesh is right, I really dont think Kundan Shah can handle this any more, judging from some of his recent debacles….it will take quite a master writer and director to adapt JBDY in contemporary themes…they should not remake it, rather rewrite keeping the theme and the basic template(like the characters and the plot wireframe) intact. I dont want any of the oroginal actors to reprise their roles, we should go for a completely new cast… Ranveer and Vinay for Naseer and vivek will be quite good, with Boman Irani, Irrfan Khan,paresh rawal(man, dont underestimate this guy) chipping in.
Nahiiiiiiiiiii….with all the emotions of a hero’s sister who would cry out during a attempt to rape scene by the villain before the hero’s arrival…dont like the idea of remake/sequel much. also,i wonder the way things have changed how many biggies would liek to act in kundan shah film. have seen the film so many times n feel that everyone just wanted to have god fun there. nobody thought that “lets-make-a-great-film” and the fun factor made all the diiference.
Remakes are made when a generation misses the original, both on content and world view. I can’t seem to find one kid who would go for this one. Most in their teens would have inherited the JBDY legacy from their parents. So what’s the point?
I am waiting for the day they learn how to pay good cinematic tributes a la Play it again, Sam. Johnny Gaddaar was a great attempt though.We should move in that direction to wipe out such duds of producers. If only brains were available on e-bay…
Isn’t it coincidental that the song playing on the radio right now is The Times they are a changin’ :)
i just wanted to ask one question “Do we really need a remake of JBDY”?
Jaane bhi do yaroo dvd has been released on moser baaer.
