Title: Jaane do yaar….
Before I start this review, lets face some facts. Jaane tu…was never intended to be novel,groundbreaking cinema. A cursory look at the promos reveals the movie’s single line plot : Best friends turn lovers but realize that only in the last reel of the movie. Hence, as I started to watch this much hyped flick, my expectations weren’t sky high. All I was looking for was a movie that didn’t grate on my nerves (eg:Thoda Pyaar Thoda magic) or one that is terrible to the point of hilarity.(eg:De Taali). Alas!…..Jaane tu…is a disappointment on all counts.
This movie has one of the most hackneyed story lines I have had the misfortune to see in recent times. So accordingly, you have the predictable set of steroetypical college friends. There is Karan Makhija who’s nicknamed “rotlu” , a typical gujju bhai (jignesh), a MTV VJ kinda chick with colored hair and attitude ( played by Sugnadha Garg who I suspect is in fact a VJ on tv), a naive girl nicknamed bombs ( for reasons unfathomable) etc etc etc. However, unlike other movies about friendships like dil chahta hai ,these characters dont grow on you. All the traits exhibited by the actors appear forced and unnatural. The movie begins with these college friends narrating the love story of Jai ( Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D Souza) to Jignesh’s potential girlfriend. She appears least interested in the beginning but very predictably gets engrossed in the tale thereafter..yawn,yawn!… The thing that irks me most about this movie is the fact that it is pretentious to the core. Granted that this movie at least doesn’t force you to accept 40 + people as college kids but youngsters are grossly misrepresented in this movie. As a 19 yr old girl hailing from a middle class family in India, I can vouch for the fact that finding the perfect someone is not the biggest issue we face upon graduation. Giving parents nicknames like PJ and Pumpkin do not make them supercool. All the sequences such as the friends breaking into impromptu song singing and Aditi having kiddish fights with her younger brother fail to bring a smile to your face. Oh! and there are some insignificant cameos by Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz and Sohail Khan (pllleeeease someone keep this man away from the camera!!!!)
Now, the good things about the movie. The music is simply superb. Hats off to Rehman for composing music that is tailor made for a film about youngsters. Each song blends in with the mood. Abbas tyrewala does a damn good job with the lyrics.(wish I could say the same about his directing). Among the actors, raising of the eyebrows/smiling is the only acting you see from Imran Khan in the fist half of the movie. But for a newcomer he isnt bad at all and is definately someone to watch out for. Genelia as the spunky and vivacious aditi is fresh talent.
There are many kind of terrible movies. Love Story 2050 is a crappy B grade bollywood movie and pretends to be nothing else. This one, however is a bad movie masquerading as a hip movie about youngsters. But the tragedy is that it will get away with it. Ironically, I think the fault lies in movies like love story 2050. Rite now, it has engulfed everything with its’ horribleness. So that people are so busy trashing it that this one doesn’t seem so bad in comparison.
And thats what pisses me off.
My advice, avoid the rave reviews and this movie as well.

while reading this space ive visualised a cynical critic tryin to play down a hyped movie and not giving credit where its due…..the reviewer almost seemed like a middle aged uncle trying to tell the right from wrong to teenage readers….but i know better because incidently the reviewer happens to be a dear friend whos tryin to ape the cynicism (if dats a word…) of a particular mr. mayank shekhar………or atleast a completely depressed person at the moment(i hope it aint true…).So heres my lowdown on the movie…….yes the movie is tryin to be dil chahata hai…and yes its not……and i agree its quite cliched to the point that they charecters are caricaturish but above all as a veiwer it made me feel good after watchin it and i din regret a single penny i wasted on it(or the yummy caramel popcorn)…….thats this movies greatest acheviement……it doesnt grow on you but its quite effective….n ya however we girls deny….finding ur soulmate is a big deal for even middle class teenage girls(atleast definately subconsciously…) and how much ever people deny everones a sucker for romance….n finally miss parekh…..you cant deny it left u smilin……so all in all grt songs …dialogues…..n bout direction se i don get it how can u find dat bad if u luvd the acting and the dialogues…..thats becoz of goodvdirection…..soo i lovd jaane tu… n i feel its definately worth one watch people……if not the cult movie of our generation…
I agree with Priyanka…Jaane Tu is not a great movie and it was never promoted as such. I went expecting to watch a simple, cute movie and it turned out to be just that. It wasn’t loaded with senti scenes , dialogues like Kuch Kuch Hota hain..it wasn’t as smooth as dil Chahtha Hain…but it was a movie that is definitely fun to watch. Although it had a shaky start, the characters grew on me!! So Nishita, I am sorry you didn’t enjoy the movie but I think it is totally wrong on your part to ‘advice’ others not to watch it. Let ppl see the movie and make up their own minds!
BTW, I thought Imran Khan did a darn good job in his debut movie. His character was completely in contrast with what our regular bollywood heroes do in a typical Hindi movie… and the credit goes to the director. Genelia was extremely cute and fit the role perfectly! Songs are really good! Overall, I thought it was worth watching!
i was easily given into the movie to criticise anything… i mean, all these points make sense… and on retrospective it might seem like a crap movie after all… but if a movie wins your heart… then the three hours are well spent right…
Its like you see a girl in a club… shes nothing great… but at that time, she interests you a lot… you go ahead chat up and have some fun time with her… i think for that to happen… like Uma’s mentioned… you have to go in like a kid who goes into watch a magic show or something…
Well, i dont know about things like what the director set out to make or whether he was trying to spoof something or just make a normal movie or whether a young girl passing out of college wants to find a soulmate etc etc. And, I really dont see how it matters. The movie was good fun to watch through its entire length …that is all that matters.
Everything else is just a case of paralysis by analysis.
Not too great…but not melodramatic either…so in my view its a perfectly watchable movie…
Pathetic review….
Dunno y people act uber cool by writing something different..just because everybody is loving the movie..u can make ur prescence felt by criticising one the best movies made abt youngsters (sice dch)..featuring ‘real’ youngsters…
hats off to abbaas…

u get a poll done 99/100 people will defy what u thnk…
JTYJN rocks! PERIOD.
@Deepak
Did you become a follower of the crowd by assuming that you are “same” and not different if you love the movie ?
If not then why do you accuse the reviewer of being different please.
Just because you say JTYJN rocks and thats period does not make it true.
Why dont you talk about yourself instead of for everyone ?.
And if you have got your poll done for 99/100 am really curious about your sample and results you so claim will defy thinking.
The opinion reviewer has is as good as or as bad as your’s.Instead of advising change of profession’s ,humbly suggest that kindly do come down from your high and mighty everyone talk and accept difference’s.
@Ubercool,
Thanks 4 the support. I was kinda expecting brickbats when I wrote the review so I am not entirely surprised by the comments…(a teensy bit hurt,to be honest …I am a girl afterall)…..
I am guessing you dont agree with my review too….but thanks anyways…I didnt realize my review came off as a piece of arrogance…..Its just that the movie really gave me a headache…..
anyways……
take care
There is no problem with your review as such.. Its just the overdose of JTYJN coverage thats causing gastric troubles..
@Nishita
Me assumed Girl’s do no hurt easy
Did not see your review as a piece of arrogance ,dont worry about the brickbats or flowers ,try to keep writing.
A little bit of aggrance with tons of humilty often helps.
The movie did not work for me,I could not relate to the finding soul mates theme,the plastic expressions,the group of friends with similar love intrests remaining very good friends and names like meeow Rats bombs.
Liked Pratiek babbar’s character and the music.
There were others around me found it good so maybe am in a minority ,am guessing the college going crowd would have wanted a group like Jay and co but in reality are faced with groups of friends with warts and imperfections so maybe the movie is aspirational and hence cool for them.
Hope you are over your headache
Take care you too.
This is one of the most honest review I have read in recent past. Its difficult to speak your mind when people are against your view but not impossible and this is what the reviewer have brilliantly proved. Please guys you might not agree with the reviewer but atleast appreciate the honest and humourous attempt of Ms. Nishita Parekh. I am sure Nishita that you will not be discouraged by some of these crap comments by equally crap people.
Keep writing.India need honest columnists like you.
