jaane tu SOUTH BOMBAY FILMAKING ???
(warning..spoilers throughout …this is not a review …. this is a personal post ….my reactions to the film…THIS IS NOT A REVIEW…A PERSONAL RANT)
Before everything ..here’s some dope on south bombay
South bombay “is the richest urban precinct in India, and houses most of the city’s elite”
Now the post –
I saw abbas tyrewala’s jaane tu yesterday ..i reached to the following conclusions
which again reaffirms my faith in yash raj and others ….
1. only rich people have the right to fall in love …pyaar mohabbat sirf ra-eszaadon ke liye hai bana hai ..hum middle class waalon key liye nahi…
2. there’s no need for public transport … trains ..buses … cabs ??? wtf ???? everybody has a car
3. girls can walk marine lines wearing skirts that threaten to blow up at the fast breeze at night 2 am without any fear whatsoever ….there’s no sunil more anyway !!!
4. guys are there only to protect a girl’s izzat/badtameezi ka jawaab dena
5. guys can easily walk into a girls apartment and even into her bedroom ..parents are so understanding
6. getting admission into nyfa is as easy as a piece of cake or crying for your lost love
7. girls get cars and pick up their friends while going to colleges..wow..where were they when i was in college ? (Contrary to what you might think .. i did goto a college… an engineering one too)
8. gujratis are usually thrown in for humor …. when its not sardars/punjabis
9.college passouts do not worry about the job interviews..they worry about their love lives …
10.you can stay together (almost literally) with 5 yrs with a girl without being sexually attracted to her (and i dnt mean that girl possibly is your sister..no she isnt!!! no OLDBOY here)
11.girls cry over spilt kittens more than their love decesions
12.all rich kids have either absolutely super cool parents or either super dysfunctional parents …
13. its kool to be with friends …to be a loser stuck up with life having nothing else to do in your entire fuckin life except hang out with friends…even the serial freinds is more intresting….
14. pass out of college and the girl’s parents invite you over and ask you to get engaged to your girl … no job watsoever ..no career aspirations watsoever ..21 is the perfect age to marry !!! notjust in haryana key gaanv or ambala key kheet or rajastaan ki ret but even in mumbai ..oops south bombay ki crossroads (south bombay doesnt have gullis and kutchas)
15. you cannot throw a dance party unless you own a bunglow …in mumbai .. complete with a garden as big as to accomadate the entire crowd in mohabbat bade kaam ki cheez hai song from trishul
16. pet mice (white) are loveable and cute and are best friends … tell them to my mom who has trouble fighting them in our kitchen/store room. oh and by the way i am yet to see a white mice…oh and also …even a physically challenged person (with due respect) has more of a life than friending mice and taunting his sister “you were my only friend”
NOBODY SEEMS TO BE HAVING A LIFE IN THIS FILM !!! YOU WANT TO RUN UPTO THEM AND SCREAM “GET A LIFE U RICH LOSERS !!!” AT THEM
you can turn around and say kk you are being harsh ..
i will say yes sir i am
you can turn around and say kk..u didnt raise your black flags when K3G released ..so why now ? why ??? why now ???
becos it is abbas tyrewala ..the lyric writer of paanch,
the writer of Munnabhai, Maqbool
the once blogger on sulekha who’se powerful blogs have inspired ..spurred…motivated many of us …
i also forgot that the same abbas wrote main hoon na …and welcome …de taali .
you can also turn around and say “kk since you are from middle class background…and not from south bombay/filthy rich family, its difficult for you to relate to them…”
but i related to ddlj, jab we met, hum tum, even kuch kuch hota hai (to a very small extent),metro, dil chahta hai (couldnt digest mercedes driving friends, but the film works for me on the whole)… kabhi haan kabhi naa…
now i must watch socha na tha and even dil dosti etc ….
everyone would say “ur a loser..ur expecting too much … its a no brains entertainer …. “
i would say “hello!!! haseena maan jayegi is one of my fav films !!! so is GUNDA..and i loved DAUD too !!!”
shut up kk …
and then i would have only one thing to say after having watched jaane tu …

This is what the Buzz18 review says :
“Friends here do not zip around in Mercs or live in Manhattan-esque apartments. They take cabs and walk the streets of Mumbai, borrow money to pay for cover charges at nightclubs, saunter around in their pyjamas, and, at times, refuse to buy a cell phone until they get a job (okay so the last bit is a little unbelievable).”

KK – is it just me or PFC has become the home for slamming “stars” and anything they are associated with – even if it’s okay? Nitpicking it’s called – undue and underserved criticism as well. I haven’t watched the film just yet – so won’t defend it. But that’s exactly how I felt after reading the two posts from you and Phoenixu.
Are we to believe that South Bombay & the inhabitants are not worthy of being shown on cinema screen?
Are we to believe that love stories should only be set in middle-class families, and that the partying and friendships should only be depicted from their point of view?
I get the point that you couldn’t relate to the movie or anything that went on in there. I do. But what you fail to realise is that that’s what the movie was “supposed” to project – it’s supposed to be about, as you put it, south-mumbaiya uber-rich kids. The promos clearly projected that. The ultra cool soundtrack gave that impression. The friggin’ cast and their getup gave that indication. What’s wrong with that?
It would’ve been a different thing had you picked up holes at the storyline – that would have justified your criticism. But just to trash something because it’s considered “hip” on this forum … come on man – get a life. Don’t turn into the polar opposite of Taran Adarsh who would give rave reviews to stupid films from the stars … you do the exact opposite.
As for your rants about how a person can think about love life instead of job interviews etc … you really have to open up your mind and think that it’s a possibility where people who are relatively secure in future are more worried about their friends and lovers than a job once when they are in their teens.
Maturity is a relative concept – you too need to grow up!!
manhattan-esque apartments ?
you have a scene in which a father calls his son from the terrace through the phone line !!!
there’s enough space in meow’s house to hold a wedding reception !!!
cover charges at nightclubs ??? Yeah right !!!
refuse to buy a cellphone till they get a job ? How about watching a movie in a multiplex ? the coke the pop corns ?
watever
ROFL!!! ek ladka aur ek ladki dost nahi ho sakte hai kya ? thoda confused nahi ho sakte hai kya ? phir dosti pyaar me nahi badal sakta hai kya ? tu vikhroli ka horny bastard tu kya samjhega pyaar dosti ishq mohabbat!!!!!
kakki – completly agree with everything u say …..ur right ….im biased ….
yes i need to grow up too …agreed …
why does ddlj with all the nri’s strike a chord ?
why does a jab we met despite the pure hardcore punjabi khet and shahid the buisness magnet etc etc work ?
why even hum tum to a certain extent with the nothing to do saif and oh-i-never-have-ajob-but-im-happy rani mukherjee work ?
why does despite the mercedes and goa vacationing rich kids in DCH, the film still works for me ?
do u really think im against commercial cinema
FYI – i liked no brainer dhamaal … liked DCH …. chakde … taare zameen par too (to a certain extent) …
as i said – i can’t comment on the movie as i haven’t watched it just yet.
i also can’t respond to why a DDLJ, or JWM, or Hum Tum worked for you … they worked for me too.
all i am trying to say is that your writing came off as very crude. It’s one thing to dislike the film – it’s another to have 2 separate posts on opening day of a movie full of rants about how rich kids should act beyond their age and social circumstances and be more acceptable to people like us. come on man – that’s not fair.
as i once read – there are only two types of cinema. the one that is good, and the other that i don’t like.
there is no such thing as bad cinema … food for thought, ehh ;-)
thanks kakki …. and do watch the film …waiting for ur thoughts …
I have not seen this movie yet. But after reading blogs and comments here for some time now I feel ppl here do tend to support some film makers and movies even if they are similar to the other masala movies they criticize e.g. JWM. As KK says it has pure hardcore punjabi khet and shahid the business magnet. I am 100% sure if it had come from the YRF camp, the forums here would have taken it apart. Kareena’s performance was universally touted as the best one here. I did not see anything extraordinary in her performance, it was the standard over the top acting, which for a change suited her role. For me the best performance last year was from Shilpa Shukla. Ah maybe it’s just me.
ravi fact is – JWM watever it was ..it didnt insult my intelligence …. unlike tashan … thoda pyaar … it didnt take the easy way out …. its a commercial masala fun film ..and i had fun watching it too ….
chak de didnt insult me … and i appreciated that too …
same here. I did not mean to say that I did not like JWM. I love the movie. Infact I have no problem even watching movies for good locations, good songs and time pass
It’s just a thought on something I have noticed in these forums.
Some romantic movies I like. KHKN – the setting, the peformances, the situation everything was relatable (is that a word???). Bommarillu – I simply liked it. The son trying to make his own identity, the middle class bindaas girl (btw in this movie too the hero does not carry a mobile). Anayethipraavu\Doli sajake rakhna – Just liked it. Some more like Socha Na Tha, KKHH (it has it’s flaws, but I believe it started the dosti & pyar trend), QSQT, Chhoti si baat, Roja, Chithram, Innale (malayalam). I cannot recollect some more I have loved over the years.
One more thought – the way Mani rathnam handles romantic scenes, I believe he is one of the best romantic movie directors. I forget the name of the movie with Revathy in it, then you have Roja, Dil Se, Alaipayuthey, scenes in Yuva.
problem my friend is that the movie isn’t showing in any central london cinema … at least not the ones that i regular. so it’d be some time before i could get back to you with my thoughts about the film … which i will. for all i know – i might be as disappointed by it as you are.
i think ravi echos what i was trying to say … pfc appears to have a very strong anti-celebrity/stars agenda. not that it’s wrong. it’s just that the forum initially attracted my attention a year ago because i could read about how a common person like me feels about a certain film, or cinema in general. it’s just that of late most of the writers have shown this bias (again nothing wrong with that either). i wish there were some writers who could give the opposite point of view as well.
balance – we need it here … for every 5 i hate YRF articles, there has to be someone who liked a tashan (i plead guilty – i enjoyed it with the best movie audience at a glasgow cinema here who hooted, whistled and clapped on every monstrosity that was shown on the screen – it was insane fun). for every anti-khan/bachchan article – there has to be a voice that says that srk was great in swades and chakde, aamir has seldom faltered when it comes to acting, and there is still nobody, absolutely nobody who can touch AB Sr when it comes to sheer presence in a frame.
kakki ..ideally that would be the case ..and thats what pfc should be … all the myriad points of view…
humble request …. write about tashan and jaane ..via iview …
contribute to the ‘other voice’ on pfc …seriously
kakki and karthik krishnan..
now thats what i call mature dialogue man….
i just wish our politicians learned a thing about it too..
i saw the movie today…..i liked it a lot..it was good fun..
but i also find myself agreeing with some of ur points KK..
maybe we could say abbas played safe with his first movie and took some cinematic liberties and still made a good movie and it seems this movie’s gonna work big time as well…..
well lets hope his next doesnt disappoint u and others either
kakki…..
if u wanna read balanced views…the RK’s the man…..
hahahah….i had a typo….i wanted to write ‘then RK’s the man’ and by mistake i wrote ‘the RK’s the man ‘
serves the purpose better since u liked TASHAN ;D
completely agree with u man…..whatta bummer!!!
first day first show and lots of expectations from Abbas and all i get is a rich kids playing LOVE-LOVE game in a most juvenile manner
Point no 10 is spot on..i so very agree with u ..and with a firend as hot as Genelia there might only be 2 possibilities that Jay Singh Rathore is (A) a gay or (B) physically impotent
this is so bourgeois…
hum ra-eez hain to kya hua? subah uththe hum cutting ke bajay mocha peete hain to kya hua? hamare kahani nahin hote kya? Hamara bhi dil pighalta hai jab college main koi ladki palatke humme dekhti hai. hormones nahin jaanti ki jis shareer main woh daudti hain woh raeez ki hai ya gareeb ki. aur middle class ka definition itna vague hai ki hormone ki baath chodo, economist ko bhi pata nahin hai. Rikshaw waala middle class hai, aur bank afsar bhi middle class?
haan mere paas iphone aur Sony ka 6 in 1 CD changer hai. aur tumhaare paas ma hai. lekin Aditi to hum dono main kissi ke paas nahin. kyon na is baat par mil jaayen, aap, hum aur hamare dost, bagpiper. khoob jammegi shaam.
firstly “hamare kahani nahin hote kya?” its
“hamare kahani nahin hoti kya?” or
“hamari kahaniyan nahin hoti kya?”
apni kahaani mein humein engross karo …. alienate nahin
“hormones nahin jaanti ki jis shareer main woh daudti hain woh raeez ki hai ya gareeb ki.”
eggjactly …toh aap yeh soch key film mat banao ki hormones sirf raeson mein hota hai.. aur har frame mein sirf ra-eszadigi mat dikhao ..thodey sincere emotions bhi dikha do
humein maaf kijiye …aap pijiye scotch/algeirs beer ..hum peetey hain desi pavva
I love ur rants…ek dum dil se..keep it flowing..
Karthik mere Bhai,
Dont get me wrong here.. I like your posts a lot.. But sometimes you tend to approach film-making the way a wannabe capitalist(Yes.. Bourgeois coming from Dabba) would do..
Like the way one of those petulant mamas on those Sarvajanik Ganpati Mandal’s organization committee would do..
Your reactions to a film might be perfectly normal and extremely personal working as a template but the way u interpret your instincts sometimes make your posts too oversimplified.. Not the way I would like to believe Cinema as an art-form should be approached..
kk, i hope you realize i was trying to be cheeky.
dabba- hope u realise i was trying to be like not getting your cheekiness
sreehari – will try and corrct that ..thanks
@Sreehari, now i am not trying to support kk or anything… i have a genuine doubt… when the filmmaker doesnt care about a particular movie being made as an ‘art form’ (since the buzz about the movies goes that it is full on mainstream mindless/senseless caper and all) then why should the reviewer/viewer care to pen down his views respecting the medium and all that…
Btw kk, i really hope that your opinion on the movie is wrong… I really wanted/want JTYJN to have been atleast a sensibly mainstream film and all… and i know i know, even you wanted that… but i hope your ‘reading of the film’ (as Sreehari might like to put it ;) ) is wrong… and it does turn out to be a good/sensible flick…
and ofc, still want the film to be a hit… (even if what you say about the movie is true and all)
Just came back after watching Jaane Tu.. Abbas seems quite clear about what he wanted to make. And he went on to make exactly that movie. Yes, there were cliches but then there were a lot of original fun moments. In fact, there was no way to make this movie without those cliches. The audience laughed the loudest at those cliches. Abbas balanced it quite well. Imran and Genelia were revealations. Imran was a huge relief from the protein shake drinking, stubble adorned wooden pieces that we have come to expect in the form of debutantes.
While this is your space and your rant, it’s off the mark IMHO.
That’s why it’s an intelligent film
exactly my sentiments subrat..
rbehemoth,
KK is a friend.. And thats probably a very important consideration while criticizing or praising someone… Cos it cud bring in a certain degree of leniency or openness as and when the need for a critical opinion arises..
But, arriving at the heart of your comment. It wasn’t a comment directed at ‘A person’s critical analysis of A Film’.. I haven’t seen JTYJN.. But I can comment on certain principles associated with artistic criticism in general..
And one of them would be.. to plug wholesale gaps arising out of using terms for free-will and get straight to why you are using that term in the first place..
I don’t like people who come up with an easy way out for the films of Bergman by double-quoting them as merely “Personal Films”… Explain to me, what u thought made those films so personal to the maker..
“Philosophical Labyrinth”.. “Socially relevant”… “Psychological Drama”.. all easy terms to use, but they demand an explanation for their presence.. Thats what distinguishes the truly wonderful pieces of “Artistic Criticisms” from the rest..
Now you put Kathik’s article up here into perspective taking this consideration that I have brought in here. Doesn’t it seem a bit too convenient? A bit too easy?
Not everybody can be a Pauline Kael.. Someone who brought in such gems like.. “Today we are conditioned to accept violence as almost a sensual pleasure”.. Someone who was so much in touch with her sub-conscious and knew how to phrase that part of her sub-conscious while writing criticism.. Not everybody can be like her..
But we can still ought to understand our accountability as commentators of an art-medium..We can afford to be less convenient. if JTYJN is convenient cinema, then this piece deduces an equally convenient way of thrashing it.. Just that:)
@ KK… I hope we are still talking about JTYJN
“1. only rich people have the right to fall in love …pyaar mohabbat sirf ra-eszaadon ke liye hai bana hai ..hum middle class waalon key liye nahi…”
Who said? where was that said in JTYJN…only genelia was rich in the movie..and she doesnt even fall in love untill the end…
“2. there’s no need for public transport … trains ..buses … cabs ??? wtf ???? everybody has a car”
Not needed to show all that in this movie..anyways..they do talk about taking a cab…
“3. girls can walk marine lines wearing skirts that threaten to blow up at the fast breeze at night 2 am without any fear whatsoever ….there’s no sunil more anyway !!! ”
Hush Hush..before naari mukti morcha comes out…anyways..do you see women in burkha at night?
ohh god…probably for very few times..i completely disagree with your view yaar..lekin..jaane do…to each his own…
I just saw Jaane Tu…sure its not In the Mood for Love…but does it pretend to be? I think not! I think we give it far more importance than it actually deserves. Its an enjoyable film…on a very uncerebral level…kinda like “Love Actually”. I dont think you read about too many people going into a detailed analysis about why “Love Actually” sucks. But its a film which can induce a few laughs (maybe even tears) even in the worst of us. Thats what Jaane Tu is…and unabashedly. Lets not elevate it into a great work of art. And as for Abbas directing it even David Mamet wrote Hannibal. If you aren’t well versed in the dynamics of the Hindi film industry…especially if you’re a writer/director. Just check out what are the largest grossing films in the past two years. No matter what scripts you have…no matter how engaging and creative and different…no producer is going to touch it unless you have a star attached or if you have a previous record (which comes from box office success….so I guess its a vicious circle. Incidentally most of them are unwilling to experiment too much because of commercial disasters of “different” films like No Smoking). So they demand sure shot successess…Jaane Tu is one of them. There is a reason why a cliche is called a cliche. People readily identify with them…and so they are used again and again. Jab We Met was not drastically different from anything…and neither is JTYJM…but it does make us smile once in a while…and crinch, incidentally, Its not In The Mood For Love…but its not too bad. It has its moments and cliches. And maybe its a South Mumbai film…Charulata is a South Calcutta film. Big Deal. If we have to discuss something, let discuss Charulata…not Jaane Tu. Its already a hit. Might as well watch it and hope Abbas tries something different next time…now that he has a “record” as a director.
KK
You should do this kind of Rant every Friday.
One day we will publish a book & make some money.
@KK
Get a life man………what’s with the anti-rich rant?
@Dabba
and what’s with the bourgeois and proletariat…….are we still in the 19th century ?
PFC is becoming a cynical leftists bastion…a last refuge against the flood of capitalism.
reading KK’s response “aap pijiye scotch/algeirs beer ..hum peetey hain desi pavva” remembered Mithun Ji’s song
“Aap toh khaye murg mussallam, apni toh bas rice plate…saalaam seth…..”
Sigh! And am really sad. Another one (actually 2) who goes from the list of people whose blogs were looked forward to. First Thani, during the Aamir / Cavite episode. And now we have PNU and KK. (3 in less than a month or so).
I don’t want PFC to become a place where I come to read only AK, Khalid, Revathy and such..And must say, though not a Khalid fan, but look at the grace with which he has done his two blogs so far. Guess pros are called so, for a reason!!
PS1: I saw the movie. And liked it. And going by the reaction of crowd during the movie, looks like Aamir Khan Productions is on a well-deserved hat-trick!!!
PS2: Not a Sobo-ite, and khalis middle-class. yet liked it.
“ek shanesha ne banwa ke hasnhi taaj mahal, hum garibo ke mohabbat ka banaya hai mazak”… dude KK i m agree on your POV.. maza aa gaya article padk ke….
@ vineet –
you may call me all sorts of names, but please not a leftist. it hurts my libertarian sensibilities. also, clearly my writing needs to improve cos i am not able to communicate cheek.
http://www.indiafm.com/features/2008/06/30/4037/
I think Abbas wanted to make a movie with cliches.
@Shiva(36)
“Charulata is a South Calcutta film” – WTF is that?!?!? Please explain.
@Dabba
apologize for hurting your sensibilities ,maybe you’re not but you do sound like one…….
and it’s a light movie yaar…..and should be treated like one…ameer gareeb ki baat kahan se aa gayi….maybe we should discuss do-beegha-zameen ,mother india and namakharam.
@ rudro
oops sorry dude. Its not a South Calcutta Film…made a mistake. Will check my facts better next time.
kk i dont know u personally.and i dont have a problem if u dont like this film. but how can u use the name of sunil more .u dont even know his story . u realy dont even know if he rapes that girl or not .if u r so angry on a film . than how sunil mores wife should react on using her husbands name . u just read some news paper seen some story of sunil on some irresponsible news channel and then used his name in ur article . if u want use his name again please try to find what realy happend that day. and no i m not gone tell u the truth if u want to know .go n meet him in the jail or meet his wife.and if u have some guts than try n tell his sotry to the world mr writer .
@subbu, ashwin – fair enough ..respect ur opinion..but sorry i couldnt handle the loosers (the gang) … tried really hard re subbu ..couldnt succeed
@sreehari -if JTYJN is convenient cinema, then this piece deduces an equally convenient way of thrashing it..
yes it is indeed …both are
@OM- “only genelia was rich in the movie..and she doesnt even fall in love untill the end…”
well eveyrone goes to multiplexes …papa sey paise maangne waala koi scene nahi ..ghar ke ek kamre mein koi gaya nahi … log ek doosrey ko ek hi ghar mein se phone karte hain ….
i dnt have a problem with the richness there ….im just baffled that thats all the ‘rich’ people care abt – LOVE
there’s no need to show public transport yes … its just that it wouldve added more fun and reality to the artificial lives these losers are leading
lekin – to each his own
@shiv – wat u wrote is sad but true
@mainak – saaley !!!
@vineet -yeah man …BTW wen ru picking me up in ur santro from my house and taking me to the pubs and discotheques in mumbai alongwith my friends ????
@awx – that song just slipped out of my mind
@hitendra – sorry to have dissapointed u …. themovie did the same to me …
i think there was a reason y u looked forward to these blogs..probably bcos of the honesty in them ? if once in a while the honesty doesnt match with ur opinion or the world order of things…it shldnt be dispatched….
@shatru bhayya – thanks
@kuldeep – the sunil more was used as a preipheral point to drive home the scare of a rape case …. im not making a documentary on him ..its a blog for god’s sake !!!
kartik you need to be fuelled up, chill… i too saw JTYJN… three hours man… and phoenixnu VIKHROLI main main rehta hoon, kartik nahi… doston ko location aur geography mix up mat kar…
i would blindly recommend JTYJN to people this is what i liked…
true observations but regardless of all of the above i still loved the film…
you can say there are cliches, caricatures etc bla bla but they never disgust you or do caricatured things to get your attention
after mithya this is the only film that i really enjoyed this year
this is also the only film other than mithya that made me laugh[i feel that hindi humor at this moment is seriously sucking]
this is also the only movie in which i have enjoyed watching arbaaz and sohail khan
the entire cast has done a wonderful job and for me after rang de and chak de this is one of the best ensemble casts i have ever seen
the screenplay is VERY very nice and the movie never tries to hard to be too funny or too moving
kartik your the guy that looks like anurag right ?
vivek – to each his own …. btw ..ur in college right ? :P
and if i remember i think thats wat u told me at the mocha meet ..yeah i guess …
surya – We both need fuel tonight !!!
Arey it’s so not about rich/middle class/poor students!!! The question is: Is it so hard to portray college life a little bit closer to reality? Is finding true love (whatever that means!) the singlemost important thing in people’s lives who are passing out of college? A middle class boy in India passing out of college has only his lovelife problems on his mind?
I am not saying he should have made a movie concentrating on other things. I know its a light fun movie but just a little bit of balance, just a little bit of reality, something to identify with…is it too much to ask?
or is it like the K3G argument? They said people liked it because thats how they dream to live…a palace, a private plane and a glycerine factory to be able to produce crocodile tears whenever they feel a li’l senti. So, is this every Indian’s college fantasy? They want their college lives to be full of parties, crushes, flirting, love and heart breaks and NOTHING ELSE.
‘Jab we met’ and ‘Socha na tha’, both very nicely avoided these questions because of the way stories were set and narrated, I don’t know if Jaane tu… manages to do the same. I have not watched the movie yet so whatever I am saying is based on what I have read about it and seen in the promos…I might end up liking the movie but all I am saying is that Kartik’s rant does not seem completely pointless.
btw is point 14 true? if it is, then shit! this might turn out to be one of those rare movies which made me cry!
neeraja … watch it ..cry for it …yeah point 14 is true … but dont say
KK didnt warn me saala !!!
Harsh post..did not like the post.
As far as the film is concerned, Paisa Vasool!! Just delivered what it promised..thats what I need from any film.
Just watched it, its awesome!
The screenplay is well written indeed! To base a feature length film on the subject that a boy likes girl n vice versa… n they dont know its love is indeed a difficult task…abbas cracks it very well…its a kind of film of you see nothing happens much on the whole, but lot of small precious things keep on happening…it does not uses regular masala tricks..its has subtleness.
Imran is good so is genelia…guess the characters they r playing r close to their real life personalities hence the performances look good.
@Sreehari at 34
Agreed… got your point
@KK
yea well some guys do get born with the silver spoon but some earn it as well and if some one is born rich it isn’t his/her fault…….
I am concerned about the environment so I don’t have a santro……I use a phatphatiya……will buy one when required….am not against being rich….it’s how you get rich which matters.
@KK
go to kalahandi or vidarbha and live with the farmers …..perhaps that should cheer u up…
Great insights Manjeet..i m so impressed
KK, I’ve just come back from trying to watch it at Movietime Malad. All shows full for today. I don’t know whether I’ll like it or not, but this post and the comments have been HUGELY entertaining. Keep ‘em coming!
Where on earth can I find a CD of Gunda?
KK…Cannot agree with you.. Looking at these movies like DCH, JTYJN..those were my exact thoughts…Apparently for the rich and the super rich, the only problem in life is who to fall in love with. That has soured my enjoyment of lots of movies including this one…The points you raise are abolutely valid…Its a pity, the writers took the easy way out when they did so much detailing in all other aspects of the movie…The movie was just OK. No big deal!!
KK..I meant to say…”Cannot agree with you more”…Sorry
@karthik
anyways nicely written article
yes i am in college and this film is quite a success with its target audience as far as my friends are concerned
many of them are starting to compare imrans debut with hrithiks[as in which one is the best debutant ever]
some of them like imran more some like hrithik more
@karthik
can i come see contract with you and phoenix…? ^_^
1)pyaar mohabbat sirf ra-eszaadon ke liye hai bana hai ..hum middle class waalon key liye nahi…
- imraan is a middle class boy… who doesnt have a cell phone
2)there’s no need for public transport … trains ..buses … cabs ??? wtf ???? everybody has a car
- is it… i thot only aditi and that jiggy has a car… aditi always drops imraan…
3). guys are there only to protect a girl’s izzat/badtameezi ka jawaab dena
-?????
4) guys can easily walk into a girls apartment and even into her bedroom ..parents are so understanding
-maybe they are… thay had asked that guy if he would marry their daughter
5)getting admission into nyfa is as easy as a piece of cake or crying for your lost love
- the girl herself syas…”NYU mein admission kya halwa hai kya?” even she knows its not a piece of cake.
6)girls get cars and pick up their friends while going to colleges..wow..where were they when i was in college ?
- maybe u were not with them…
7)college passouts do not worry about the job interviews..they worry about their love lives …
- imraan is shown giving 1 job interview (to genelia’s parents) and then preparing for one…
8)you can stay together (almost literally) with 5 yrs with a girl without being sexually attracted to her
- maybe thats is the only thing u think about
9)you cannot throw a dance party unless you own a bunglow …in mumbai .. complete with a garden as big as to accomadate the entire crowd in mohabbat bade kaam ki cheez hai song from trishul
- but how can u throw a dance party at ur house if it cant accomodate people… u wud alwaz book a club or maybe your bldg parkin… if your house is that big you CAN throw a dance party
10)pet mice (white) are loveable and cute and are best friends … tell them to my mom who has trouble fighting them in our kitchen/store room. oh and by the way i am yet to see a white mice…oh
-maybe ur mum even hates stray dogs… but majority people have them as pets… so ur mum fights the wild mice at ur house… maybe someone likes it as a pet… POV KK… POV…
11)NOBODY SEEMS TO BE HAVING A LIFE IN THIS FILM !!! YOU WANT TO RUN UPTO THEM AND SCREAM “GET A LIFE U RICH LOSERS !!!”
-maybe you need it too… maybe we all.
ok the plot is not abbas-esque and is cliched… but the writing IS abbas-esque… lot of wit.
and as a character in the film says… its not about the story… its about how u tell it…
but again im sorry… it is absolutely about the POV…
noopur- since u have taken great pains to explain ur pov … lemme do a reprise …
1)middle class boy ? imraan ? hehehehehehhehe
LOL ..ROFL … kapde dekh ..ghar dekh .. shakal dekh … .bank balace dekh …
calling him ‘middle class’ is ur idea of middle class ???
2)aditi and jiggy have cars which never break down ..everyone is always getting lifts in them … they dont fill petrol … not a single scene where it doesnt appear that they life an ‘artifical’ life … its plain and colourless
3)see the film again …
4)hahahahahahahahahaha
5)this is the cake…. ‘Show’ don’t ‘tell’ is what any screenwriter will tell u. “halwa hai” ??? i didnt see anyone talk abt classes/exams/lectrues/remnisce student life….
didnt see imraan preparing for interview …we go MAD trying to learn filmaking and genelia (rats or meow or whatever) baithe baithe bina padhe gets into this ??? u show its halwa but u say its not halwa !!! (u = the filmaker)
6)if u know them ..pls padd my number to them
7)Oh GAWD !!! u call that a job interview ? how many job interviews have u given in life ? preparing ? where was he shown preparing for the interview (now dont say he tells his mom padhna hai… I dont see him prepare ..i only hear him)

9) ur missing the point
10) white mice as pets ??? seriously ??? how artifical can u get ???i wldve understood a dog/cat .but white mice ??? how much of a loser the guy must’ve been ???
11) yeah may be we all do ….
everything is abbas-esque … yeah abbas from welcome, de taali ..main hoon na, not abbas from maqbool
one word for the entire film is FRIVIOLOUS …
just curious ..wat r ur thoughts on om shanti om and main hoon na ?
1)Imraan and Rotlu character have been shown to be not so well off.It is just dat this is not the central plot. For that you can see any mithun/jitendra/rishi kapoor 70’s flick which dealt with garib ladka-amir ladki theme.
2)Everybody didnt have a car..only meow and jiggy had.
6)its not easy getting into nyu..meow acknowledges as much.
7)dude its not “inspite” of that fact that you went to an engg coll that u didnt see such girls..its “because” of the fact..trust me. I am an engg myself.
@KK
seriously man you are on a vindictive mission or what ?? ab cinema mein gaadi mein petrol bharte hue dikhayenge kya…….film bana re ki documentary ??
@KK and your responses to noopur
2) The film should be replete with gas filling scenes, mechanic and car break down scenes to keep you happy.
4) ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
5)talks about exams, life struggles, interviews etc should convince you, i thought the movie dealt with relationships, not about a middle class guy who has friends whose car breaks down…………while he gives interviews, every now and then.
6)you didnt go to the right college, go to arts and commerce section students(believe me most of them have cars).
7)Padhne wala scene(Seinfeld said you cant show someone reading on screen, its the limitation of the medium). Imagine someone reading on the screen, and we dumb fools watching him read…………
8)wat crap?????????? Koi dost nahi hai kya………
9)Film makers liberty, gaane ke liye bada jagah chahiye(I thought the film said, no resemblance to any real people at the start, you missed that line).
11) you cant reach them, they do have bodyguards as well, and they might spank you for that…………
Kartik,
Have you never seen white mice as pets before? You need to meet some people who have pets then. Kabhi filmo se bahar ki duniya mein bhi logon se mila karo yaar..people not only have ONE MOUSE, they have families of five to six mice as pets. Not only mice, people have squirrels, reptiles as pets. And I won’t get encyclopedic on that. One does not have to be a loser for having any sort of pets, that much I will tell you.
Ghar ke andar phone use karna – aisa kya? Intercom ka naam suna hai? If the house has two levels, to agar kisi ne raat ke time par chilla chilla kar kisi ko bulane ke badle intercom use kar liya to us mein kya galat hai?
How many girls were there in your group in college or school? OK, were you interested in all of them sexually? I can see the answer as YES, since you have already argued in favor of that. Now, did you LOVE all of them? Did you confess your sexual attraction to your other friends as anything at all? That’s your answer. The movie concentrates on love part, not the ’stands’ between friends -whether one night or more nights.
The film didn’t work big time for me. But what you are analyzing here is nitpicking bullshit really.
This post and comments have been SO entertaining! Coming on the heels of having watched Gunda – an all time classic – last night (at long last)
frankly guys… never thot i would say this but i prefer KJo films like KKHH or KHNH to films like JTYJN!!! at least, it is all fake there. here all the fakeness masquerading as realism is insulting!! when you watch KKHH or KHNH — you know that it is all artifice but there is an emotional payoff, star-power, good songs etc so you do not ask rational questions. here, there is a veneer of realism that forces you to ask questions like the ones this post is asking. and frankly, everybody is praising genelia and all — i found her tres irritating but imraan is okay — has a presence every now and then! and that brother — give me a break….
but there is one good song…
@Sangita Gopal
but there is one good song… (I thought most ppl liked each and every song)
Why do you all have to watch a realistic movie with all life details(In JTYJN)?
When did the producers or director ever say hey i am making a raw realistic movie which will deal with everything real…………….
There should be some cinematic liberties, who wants to see real things only on movies(dont we see them enough on our day to day life)……………
Are you sure you saw the film?
If you did, why didn’t you pay attention at the dialogues?
@KK
1)middle class boy ? imraan ? hehehehehehhehe
LOL ..ROFL … kapde dekh ..ghar dekh .. shakal dekh … .bank balace dekh …
calling him ‘middle class’ is ur idea of middle class ???
????Kiske shakal pe uska class likha hai? How do i see the bank balance? Ridiculous.
2)aditi and jiggy have cars which never break down ..everyone is always getting lifts in them … they dont fill petrol … not a single scene where it doesnt appear that they life an ‘artifical’ life … its plain and colourless
?????? Lets now make films with people filling petrol, repairing cars. WTF?? Even documentaries edit this out. How many National Geographic documentaries have you seen where they fill up their jeeps? And its not as if they are on a road trip that they need to refill every now and then.
3)see the film again … Goes back to you. Listen to the dialogues this time.
4)hahahahahahahahahaha?
5)this is the cake…. ‘Show’ don’t ‘tell’ is what any screenwriter will tell u. “halwa hai” ??? i didnt see anyone talk abt classes/exams/lectrues/remnisce student life….
didnt see imraan preparing for interview …we go MAD trying to learn filmaking and genelia (rats or meow or whatever) baithe baithe bina padhe gets into this ??? u show its halwa but u say its not halwa !!! (u = the filmaker)
????? No one prepares for an interview until there is a job vacancy. Till then middle class people have to wait.
Aditi DID NOT get into NYFU. Thats why she says “Halwa hai kya?” she goes there for 2 weeks.(please listen)
6)if u know them ..pls padd my number to them
???You are from engg. So am I. Go to BA/BSc/BCom colleges. Stop being an ignorant fool. (There is a scarcity of females in engg. Still i have seen a few of them bring cars. Middle class girls.)
7)Oh GAWD !!! u call that a job interview ? how many job interviews have u given in life ? preparing ? where was he shown preparing for the interview (now dont say he tells his mom padhna hai… I dont see him prepare ..i only hear him)
????? When you are meeting the interviewer with whom u are well acquainted with at his residence, u really won’t be expected to give a formal interview. DUDE? Also it probably was his first interview ever.
8) is it humanly possible ? can u stay 5 yrs without even getting ’sexually attracted’ whatever happend to teenage hormone shormone ??
???? U might get attracted but that doesnt mean u will do something about it. In other case u may not get attracted despite hormones.
9) ur missing the point?
??? u don’t really have a point.
10) white mice as pets ??? seriously ??? how artifical can u get ???i wldve understood a dog/cat .but white mice ??? how much of a loser the guy must’ve been ???
???? The person is a deviant artist. He has a different bent of mind. Why can’t he keep a mouse as a pet? Children in other countries keep mice and hamsters as pets. Please cure your ignorance.
apurva – fantastic responses …
im tired of explaining ..u wont understand ..
jaane do ya jaane do na …
P.S – watch socha na tha and lemme know ur thoughts …
KK..just watched Socha na…open to discussion…to start off..i liked socha na tha and Jaane tu…
Socha Na Tha is like a cult film..After a long long time comes a film with a thoda hatke story and refreshingly zangy and witty dialogues. Music – what do I say. The songs just take the film forward and depict the characters emotions so well. Great lyrics too. This film was way more original than Ali’s JWM. Wonder why it sank without a trace….
@ Arthi..you talking about the songs of Jaane tu?..if so..i thought the song placements were quite bad…
@ OM – No..talking about Socha na Tha
Arthi..about the songs in Socha na tha..the lyrics were pretty good but..sandesh didnt do justice to it…yes offcourse the songs did move the story forward..but those were the lyrics..i am/was kinda dissapointed with the music though
hmmm…okie….thats your take..i liked them tho..:-)…
i was one of the few who saw socha na tha in a theatre..i was very much impressed by the dialogue trailer and songs..and i rate it more highly than Jab We Met…Both Abhay and Ayesha were brilliant in the movie…
one thing proved “KK can RANT sala”….and how…..PFC RANTS AWARDS…..there can be only one winner….
OZ yeh KHOON KI PUKE web space se saaf karne ke liye jo samagri chahiye wo bata dena….
SHANT KK SHANT….yeh kaise saawal hai….it reminds me of that scene from BUNTY AUR BABLI where Rajesh Vivek screams tana shahi nahi chalegi…angrez bharat chodo…why..one has no clue…this reminds me so much of that..whats the morcha for?
I saw it didn’t think much of it…..thik hai yaar…weekend miltein hai….daru on me..
I am a big time fan of Socha na Tha and would like to mention here that Socha Na Tha is far far better than all of the discussed adaptations. I must say adaptations. I liked JWM and Jaane Tu…, still can’t forget the beautiful sequences from Socha Na Tha. The producers of Socha Na Tha must think of re-releasing the movie.
What do you say?
