Jaane Tu…ya jaane na…..some random thoughts…

This was the first teaser of the film and i think its one of the best teasers i have seen in recent times. Smart n very intelligent and one that makes fun of all those body-shody type superstars’ launch….from Roshan junior to junior baweja. As soon as i saw it, i made sure that my roomies, colleagues and friends also see it. Thats what i feel like doing when i like something very much. Share it with everyone. And whats more…tirkit dhana tirkit dhana sounded peppy and it ended with rahman’s superb vocals. The perfect teaser that made me wanting for more…songs, promos and the film.

And then, came out this one…..

And what a fall!! this song killed all my expectations. It has everything that you define “typical” in a peppy college romantic story. Shit….even the basketball. I know…i know…some things are meant to be typical. But is there no other way ?

I dont know Abbas but those who know him, they all agree on one thing….he is very talented and a great writer…..have heard so many stories about him from so many people who have worked with him….have read his blogs….and when your filmography has variety like Maqbool, Munnabhai MBBS and Main Hoon Na, i surely have the right to expect something more than the typical college romantic number in a typical college campus shot in typical manner!

Got the album and am disppointed big time. Blame it on expectations again. Its A R Rahman. I tried desperately to like it…heard it so many times because lot many time Rahman’s music slowly grows on you. Only this time i am not sure how “slow” it is….m still waiting.

The good thing about the album is that there are many new voices and thats refreshing! Everything else….naaah. Didnt work for me. I even tried to figure out atleast one song that can be put in loop because Rahman guarantees that…his albums always has OLS4S - one loop song 4 sure. And my search for that loop song is still on……

Callertunes….yes thats the new parameter to judge if i really like a song or not…..if i like something i feel like changing my caller tune immediately so that everyone who calls me gets to hear the new song that i have discovered. Most of the times, it takes lot of effort to figure out the caller tune code of that new song. And many times, i store the caller tune code. Because many friends ask me for the same code after hearing it. This time, the music label has given all the caller tune code numbers in the booklet with the album. But i am not changing…..i will stay with khwaja mere khwaja.

From romatic kabhi kabhi to haunting n shivering jaane tu mera kya hai and from jazzy Rahman in tu bole…main boloon to foot tapping pappu cant dance, it all sounds just ok. Nothing great. Pappu cant dance is catchy but not a song that i would like to listen. Its the kind of song which someone else plays somewhere and you listen and dont mind.

And Abbas as lyricist is terrible. Not a single new word, new thought or anything said in a new way. Its sameer’s style of tukbandi….so…when its aankhein nam…it will be with dil me gam…dhadkan gayee hai tham!! When its jaane kaisi kashish hai…the next line will be jaane kaisi khalish hai…and so on……nazrein milana, nazrein churana. If you can spot something new, do let me know. I would be very happy, seriously!! or may be they will say its the way college going kids talk. Hmm…may be yes. I would better be old and play….khuda hoon main…sar jhuka…..also written by Abbas!!!

And am still looking forward to the film. May be director Abbas will be unlike lyricist Abbas and more like writer Abbas. Hopefully he will live upto all the expectations. And i will get to hear few more stories about him. just hope so. And yes…imran khan and genilia look great. very comfortable and have pleasing screen presence.

From the booklet…director’s note….

….jaane tu…is the story of youth as i remember it. the age where we first get to know the secrets of the heart. The loves, friendships and jealousies that seem to earth-shattering, so life-altering at the time and years later, so laughbly gentle and innocent. Of course, the film goes off on its own journey including some song-and-dance, a talking portrain, a corrupt cop and a couple of horse-mounted Rajput cowboys. It even has the quintessential airport climax.

But ultimately, the movie is made to remind each one of us what it felt like when we first started falling in love……

So, whats your favourite college romcom ? the last one i really loved was Imtiaz Ali’s Socha Na Tha. since then…..no, i dont remember any other.

just listen on and wait another week or so Pnu, i believe u will get that OLS4S

Thats the irony.. If the same music was given by a new music director we would directly dump it as trash.. Since its rehman we sometimes force ourselves to like it.. The same would have happened before as well.

    talk about being brand slave..

    Man you clowns are pathetic.

You fucks will rave about a no smoking, and grudge a guy who makes a film that has watchability written all over it. Jesus you all need lives.

I heard the album and I haven’t heard anything like it in ages. Every song stays with me, I play it in my car, I find myself humming it.

So does passion for cinema mean only indulgent flops? losers!!!

OK i guess my post was misinterpreted or maybe i was not clear

i never said that i dont like the music of Na Tu jaane..I havent even heard all the songs to say that the music is not good. Just heard some songs here and there and i would say so far so good. And the music is by rehman does not make any difference to me..

My comment was specific to a point mentioned in the blog

Got the album and am disppointed big time. Blame it on expectations again. Its A R Rahman. I tried desperately to like it…heard it so many times because lot many time Rahman’s music slowly grows on you. Only this time i am not sure how “slow” it is….m still waiting.

    I hope iam clear now.

I loved the music from the word go. The day I saw the promo for “Kabhi Kabhi Aditi” i was so hooked, that i waited for the music on 15th may, the original music release day, but was stretched to 20th may. Anyway, the music was worth the wait. The jazz song(”Tu Bole Main Boloon “) by rahman is awesome, not to mention the sad song(Jaane tu mera kya hai)(its awesomely fresh), “Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana” is peppy college song, “Pappu cant dance” is funny and worth listening over and over and kabhi kabhi aditi is a wonderfully fresh, beautiful song and something very new.

Of course you trash rahman’s music, people would be bound to respond……….

  8. rextreme on May 21st, 2008 11:41 pm

Lyrics were ordinary, music was thanda - even more thanda than Jodhaa Akbar. At least Javed Saab gave excellent lyrics for some of the JA songs. Rahman saab ko kya ho gaya hai? And the film looks like the usual college romcom. No wonder Aamir has to resort to discussing cats and dogs to generate interest in this film.

  9. gypsyking on May 22nd, 2008 1:23 am

i love the music, and let me understand this you don’t like the lyrics? honestly just hear them. Every song has a distinctive mood words convey it well and i love the throw backs like the nazre milana aur nazre churana, papa kehte hain in pappu, and the galibh sher(actually very impressed with self for getting that one). And the jazz song when was the last time a ‘collage flick’ have the jass song, i guess the answer is never. Only AR can pull that off and again impressed with the lyrics managed to make it sound playful rather than falling for the usual trap jazz of making it sound sexy or anxty. Just because you have a problem with Aamir’s dog don’t run down a great Album. once again… i love the music

rehman rocks and using present definite tense is a must here. the man is just brilliant. disagree with me. listen to jane tu. you will surely change your opinion. in my entire life i have not bought more than 10 music albums. reason really nothing motivates me to spend my money…my collection incldes….bandit queen, rangeela, guide, meenaxi, yadon ki baraat, biwi no 1, roja, crash, karunesh, lamhe, and that is it i guess. and one more thing to guess did i buy jane tu, no not in the beginning…i never really bother to go and buy music albums….just heard it at a freind’s place and was forced to shelve out some precious moeny the very next day. i might be kanjoos but i dont regret the decsion…the album rocks, jazzss as well…bad one…but i trully loved all the songs, pappu, aditi, jane tu, kahin toh…these songs i know will surely top the charts….now lets see….how precise is my prediction

  11. Sameer on May 22nd, 2008 3:24 am

    o_O

I loved the Music… I feel that kabhi kabhi aditi… song is the best song in a looooooong while…

And Pappu can’t dance saala has really nice innovative lyrics… o_O

And among the college rom-coms… I quite like ‘em…

Euro Trip is one such movie that I can watch again and again like Andaaz Apna Apna…

And even mp3… which i went to see with my friends thinking it will be a bad movie and we’ll have a gala time abusing everyone involved with the film.

But then, I liked the film… I expected zilch from it… so i liked what i saw

Also, Socha na tha… Socha na tha itni jhakaas movie rahegi… It was plain awesome. I liked it more than Jab we met.

  12. iishika on May 22nd, 2008 4:50 am

  13. Jahan Bakshi on May 22nd, 2008 5:22 am

Hey man, phoenix- okay, the lyrics are very ordinary, but the music is pleasnt and peppy. I like it- am really hooked to ‘Aditi’ esp…

  14. Magik on May 22nd, 2008 6:39 am

Hey bro PNU, you were almost there. Although I loved the aditi track, for some goddamned reason Musu Musu from Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi kept poppin up in my mind. May be its the lyrics. Anyways, liked ur post.

  15. Neeraja on May 22nd, 2008 7:03 am

Not bad at all…am totally hooked to Sukhwinder’s jaane tu number. kabhi kabhi and pappu are also decent.
Music is actually pretty good but yeah lyrics is mediocre.

  16. phoenixnu on May 22nd, 2008 9:07 am

@dpac…done enough. will check after one week.

@alone…completly agree. when one is first timer u have to really really good otherwise there is no chance. and rahman was also first timer once. that litmus test no one can avoid. but now u cant ignore someone who has delivered so many great albums.

@sripmo..so much anger!! yes, we love being clowns. they r atleast funny without being angry. and plz go thru the post once more,i am also easgerly waiting for the film. was disppointed by the music. and about indulgent flops…hav u checked out the music of aamir…if not plz do..here is one track…for me..its million times better than any track of jaane tu…and ya ya we r all biased!!

    http://indiafm.com/broadband/video/Movie-Promos/KzSCiD95/1/Mehfooz-Aamir.html

@goni dhoni…shit u r smart yaar. i thought nobody wud guess that but u figured out…yes yes as u hav said…Of course you trash rahman’s music, people would be bound to respond….this was the intention.

    @magik…thnx

@jahan..yaar tried hard. but naah. given up now.

  17. Alone on May 22nd, 2008 5:34 pm

    @ iishika — LOL no i havent..I never buy CD’s.. You tube Zindabad..:P

@ Phoenixnu i agree you cant ignore but lets face it sometimes we like it or force our selves to like it just coz of the brand name.

Having said that i dont mean that music of “Jaane Tu…ya jaane na” is bad..I heard it today and i liked it very much.. .. i hope i got the name right this time.

What infact really surprized me and that 2 pleasantly is that Music of Jaane tu… does not have the typical Rehman’s trademark signature.. This one stands out.. And lyrics is fine too..Kabhi Kabhi Rocks.. prefer this anytime over Ujala Dhuan and Geeli Hasi..

Music and lyric Reminds me of

    1) Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai (Runa) - Everything was Pathetic. orchestration, tune, lyrics, etc
    2) Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai ( Sukhvinder ) - Can Mr Rehman stop “banging” instruments at regular intervals, once and for all ? Can Mr Sukhvinder sing in a new style with Mr Rehman ?
    3) Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi - not my taste, though must be sounding good to the college going crowd today.
    4) Kahin To Hogi - ok - if the metallic sound could have been avoided it would have been good.
    5) Nazrein Milaana Nazrein - by this time I thought that I am listening to same song over and over again in the album !! so repetitive !!!
    6) Pappu Cant Dance - made-for-the-disco-current-trend-without-which-no-music-director-is-”in”-these-days
    7) Tu Bole Main Boloon - Ok song. A nice western Jazzy feel. Wish somebody else had sung it. I do not like Rehmans voice in this one.

  19. parth on May 23rd, 2008 4:34 am

“Kabhi kabhi Aditi” is great…. actually ironically movie’s regressiveness is so welcoming and refreshing… or mayb its just Aamir khan’s association to it..

  20. Maximus on May 23rd, 2008 2:49 pm

A.R. Rahman was once a genius , there is no denying that but now all that he is is just another “run off the mill” character.

    Why?

    1. Stop stealing “hooks” , “Preludes” , ” Interludes” to create your own songs. Most of us now know what North African Music sounds like, who Natacha Atlas is and what Arabesque is. You did it in the movie “Hindustani” by stealing the hook from Ace of Base’s “All that she wants”, but that song was unique , something we had never heard before , that and of course the images of Australia … ;-)

    2. There is a growing population around the world of people who watch Korean and other Asian movies , we know how the BGMs of these movies sound, please stop using them.

    3. Stop fiddling with the damn keyboard. Enough already with the synthesizer, audio sampler etc. You made Roja with a damn Yamaha … What is wrong with you ? You want to be experimental , GREAT ! But don’t lose soul ! There used to be a certain sense of “pain” in your earlier songs … Where has it gone ? Have you sold out too? Duhhh … Do you even have to ask … Avril Lavigne has … so has Gwen Stefani and Rob Thomas , why not you too , right ? Oh ! Wait its called branching out … Yeah you corporate tool … justify !

    4. Jazz , esp. when you sing it , needs to have “heart” , you have a great misconception that taking a song an octave higher somehow seems to impart emotion … it just sounds screechy, uninventive, repetitive and FAKE !

    5. We know you have a million and one sound samples, all collected from different parts of the world … I have a DVD collection the size of the Yankees stadium doesn’t mean I’m going to make all my movies inspired by those … Ok fine, you wanna use them go on , blow us all to kingdom come … Not use them like how you did in the intro of those songs in that new Aamir Khan’s nephew’s movie … With the girl’s voice going “OH OH ” .. WTH ?

    6. Papu Can’t Dance, Sala ? … You too ? Do I need to say more ?

    7. If you compose music for another “epic/period/biopic”, I will strangle myself … They all sound the bloody same! Why do it if you ain’t inspired to ? Its definitely not the money ? Then why the hell ?

    8. For your kind information … BLAZEE … that dude, he can’t rap or rhyme to save his life … Anyone listen to that song from Rang De Basanti - Paatshala ? For those who don’t have a clue … Here …

    ……………………………………
To the mahal of the Taj
    To the Minar of Qutub
To the Kumari of Kanya (Say hoi oh hoi)
To the Panjim of Goa (Say hoi oh hoi)
    To the Kaancheepuram
    Zindabad Zindagood
All have something to say (Say hoi oh hoi)
They all have something to say
They all have something to say
Follow me Follow me Follow me now!
    ……………………………………..

    What is this ?

Don’t spread yourself too thin and come up with half ass shit like Ada and the other new one … You got a few awards for Guru , so did Shah Rukh Khan for Chak De … Lol, get what I mean ? It sucked ! Nothing compared to your previous work.

Rahman please clean up your act ! Otherwise you will end up like Orson Welles riding your legacy downhill to the grave !

  27. Maximus on May 24th, 2008 4:41 am

    Parth,

Maybe if you want to atcually understand what soemone else is trying to ay then it might all make sense …

Remember the line: “Yeah you corporate tool … justify !”

The word justify point out the irony in the situation … The only reason I compared them with him is to show him the irony that he has reached a point where some random person is actually comparing him to them in order to make a point … The fact still remains that he like them have sold out and become a corporate tool …

And I wouldn’t want to be or expect to be taken seriously by someone with your level of perception … It is a message filled with irony and sarcasm from head to toe …. Treat it that way …

Whats the best part about 2008 yet?

The best part of 2008 for me is the launch of my music conservatory. It’s very important to me, and a completely different road. I am looking forward to this exciting venture.

What was your reason for opening this school?

The time has come to start, so that we could have an orchestra. We have got about 1,000 queries and managing director Selvakumar is in the process of replying to it. It is about musicians. Only if you have musicians, you can have composers. [We want] to create a pallate of players for future composers. If they don’t have musicians, they will make music out of computers. By this, they might lose the joy of listening to live music and composing from that.

Maximus, just a note, if you have to convince people that “you’re being ironic and sarcastic from head to toe”, it clearly isn’t working.
Why do I feel a sense of deja-vu? Everytime a new ARR soundtrack comes out it gets trashed. Reminds me of what Gavaskar said of Ganguly “The only thing Indian people like better than putting people on pedestals is bringing them down in resounding thuds”

Here’s a shocker: it IS possible to be critical without being venomous and getting personal.

  34. Vendetta Red on May 24th, 2008 11:23 am

But if people completely miss the point and misrepresent , what do you ?

Well , ask yourself that question more often , Why the deja vu ? There definitely isn’t always smoke without a fire, why don’t you stop looking at it from your POV and see why others do this.

Without getting personal ? - I didn’t see anything personal written about Rahman !

It is sarcasm like you said , it will be funny to some and offensive to others , let it be … It definitely worked on me … Who are you, the defender of the poor and the oppressed ? To pass judgment on what other’s have to say , get off your high horse and ease a bit down ! Don’t be so uptight …

What Gavaskar said to Ganguly ??? … That’s funny !

I am not an AR Rahman fan but still listens to his songs and well the songs in this album are not bad but it all sounds similar to previous Rahman songs.Just for comparison Aamir’s debut film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo jeeta Wahi Sikander had excellant melodies which are still popular today eventhough now we come to know that may songs in these films were copied. But I seriously doubt whether Jaane na Jaane songs will have the same staying power?.

    Dear,Friend
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na marks the acting debut of Aamir Khan’s nephew Imraan Khan. Abbas Tyrewala of Munnabhai M.B.B.S and Main

Hoon Na fame has scripted and directed this fun flick mainly targetted at the youth. This is also the first movie from Aamir

Khan productions to not feature the superstar himself. But any product that Aamir lends his name to, is keenly anticipated

and be rest assured, high on quality. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is no exception!
