Jab Bhi Yeh Dil Udas Hota Hai !

[Caution – readers searching serious material may skip this as its more like swant sukhay (self satisfaction) activity but if anyone can connect then may revive similar kind of memories]

We read some times in the newspapers that somebody got a letter after 20-25 years. All of us may have some childhood memories and often visual memories which remain there in the mind but we can’t connect them with something because we don’t come across that thing again.

And sometimes it happens that we come across something and all the threads of the past memories join their branches and we feel happy on getting the whole package.

First memory : -

Till some years ago I used to hum following lines in the moments of sadness or whenever I felt dejected. Rather these lines used to come automatically out from my lips.

First line goes like this

Jab bhi ye dil udas hota hai

Perhaps I had heard this line before in some song but I never could recall listening any such song in my conscious state.

If one has not heard the original song then what line he would add to the above mentioned line?

I used to add another line in to it as somewhere I believed that this should be the following line of the song
Jane kyon bar bar hota hai

I never paid any attention that though two lines can have some connection as they express almost similar feelings but as per the lyrical grammar they don’t fit well.

Jab bhee” words in the first line and “Jane kyon” in second line don’t support each other.

Perhaps I mixed two different songs. It happens many times because so many songs are based on same tune, same raaga that one may sing Mukhda of one song and may add antara of another song and if one is singing unconsciously then his/her mind will not object to this mixing mistake.

Well I will come back to this point later.

Second memory:-

Sometimes in childhood I saw a film on DD and a scene remained in my memory. Scene is like this

An old lady (Simi Grewal), with a stick in her hand, comes at a garage where a young man is lying on a pile of tyres and joking with his friends. Simi thinks he has become loafer and spoiling his life. She is his mother and she beats him with the stick.

I never came across this film again though often I recalled this scene and tried to recall other things about this film. But nothing helped me.

After internet and IMDB, once or twice I tried to search. But in case of old hindi films even IMDB and internet provide very little or no help. Specially when story is not mentioned there then its very difficult to catch the right film. If some other actor’s memory is also there and both the actors have done only few films together then IMDB may give some help even if story is not mentioned. But when only one actor’s face is lying in memory and other faces are with blurt vision then it’s a difficult case.

Two memories can be associated with same thing? Yes and You Tube proved it for me.
By chance yesterday I came across the video of the following song and it solved two above mentioned puzzles of mine.

First the right lyrics of the song
Jab Bhii Ye Dil Udaas Hotaa Hai
Jaane Kaun Aas Paas Hotaa Hai
Jab Bhii Ye…

So above lines are the right lines. And they are penned by Gulzar saab so naturally there is a better connection between the first line and second line. While first line still represents the sadness but second line makes it a romantic song.

Jab hee ye dil udas hota hai
Jaane kaun aas pass hota hai—-

Whenever heart is filled with sadness, someone comes in my memory to give me solace. Or this sadness can be there because of physical absence of the lover. Or one is sad and wants to be alone but lover’s remembrance reaches there and occupies the thoughts and fills the mood with romantic thoughts and makes it imaginative.

Now see the video of the song.

Song is simply good. When Kabir Bedi raises the volume of the radio only then volume of the voice of Rafi is raised.

Both Kabir Bedi and Simi Grewal are sitting alone in their rooms. They look sad suffering from the feeling of not being with each other.

Song comes on Radio and breaks the concentration of both the lovers.

Jab Bhii Ye Dil Udaas Hotaa Hai
Jaane Kaun Aas Paas Hotaa Hai
Jab Bhii Ye…

Scenes jump from Kabir Bedi to Simi Grewal with the meaning of words. He thinks something and then camera shows Simi passing through same emotion.

Honth Chup Chaap Bolate Ho Jab
Saans Kuchh Tez Tez Chalatii Ho
Aankhen Jab De Rahii Hon Aavaazen
ThaNdii AahoN Men Saans Jalatii Ho
Jab Bhii Ye…

In between the song, Simi becomes happy and enjoying the romantic mood of the song. Sharda’s humming for Simi Grewal sounds good.

Aankhon Men Tairatii Hai Tasviiren
Teraa Cheharaa Teraa Khayaal Liye
Aainaa Dekhataa Hai Jab Mujhako
Ek Maasuum Saa Savaal Liye
Jab Bhii Ye…
Koii Vaadaa Nahiin Kiyaa Lekin
Kyuun Teraa Intazaar Rahataa Hai
Bevajah Jab Karaar Mil Jaye
Dil Badaa Bekaraar Rahataa Hai
Jab Bhii Ye…

Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
* * * *
Now I know the name of the film and some other memories have got the recognition. Seema (1971) is the film and it was first or second film of Kabir Bedi. Just in 5 years time he had got to work in Sandokan.

Unlike todays trend, It was the time when actors did not have stylists for everything in their services and they opted clothing and hair styles themselves as they thought would suit them and would look good on screen. See the hair style of Kabir Bedi! He seems unaware of plus points of his physical beauty. But this rawness is good because presently every other week new people are launched and they have training in everything and they end up looking like similar in their clothing styles and even they bring same kind of expressions on their faces. They come to join films after having training in dance, acting etc but they are not able to save their personal touch in this preparation.

Anyway now I can simulate the story ideas and can guess that Simi and Kabir Bedi are lovers and there are few possibilities

1- they marry each other but either Kabir Bedi is died or go away from Simi and Simi raises her son Rakesh Roshan alone
2- they could not marry and either Kabir Bedi dies or leaves Simi and Simi becomes unwed mother and raises her son Rakesh Roshan alone

That scene where an old Simi comes to beat Rakesh Roshan in the garage is solved now.

Hope to see the film some day in future.

If second line “jane kyon baar baar hota hai” was not the product of my mind only and belongs to some other song then I hope, some day I will find that song also.

May “You Tube” flourish more. It connects us with our past moments and past memories.

Hi RK, good to see you on PFC after a long time. Maybe you were busy touring :-).
You tube does connect us with our past. It has an exclusive Indian avatar now, it’ll give an opportunity to a lot of talented people to post audio-visual content of their work. Besides, we’ll get to search and seek all those songs from the past. I’m looking forward to the day when a search engine is commissioned to help us find a song by just typing in random words from the lyrics.
The downside- we’ll stop straining our music memory bank.

    @Arun,
yes, You Tube is not less revolutionary than introduction and expansion of Internet.
You tube like services can be very useful in introducing old gems to new generation but its sad that old production companies, old producers and their family members dont seem to be interested in encashing this opportunity. Their old films have no market as such but if they are introduced via You tube then they can again occupy some market. As its possible that in 50% cases people will buy the DVDs after watching at You Tube. One wants to keep good films. To see a film in 10-20 parts is just fine to get introduction but it cant bring the true joyous experience of watching a film in one go.
Its even better to show freely to people than to keep them in darkness of ruined studios.
Where are Sohrab Modi’s historical films?
RK films could have done some work in this direction but they have removed even website of RK films.
Do we get AAg and Awara easily in market?
Release them and their sales will be increased.
There are many many films which may make bring back good reputation of Hindi cinema back among audience.

    @Pavan,
    Good experience.
Please write a full post on Choti Choti Batein. This gem deserves a full post. People will know that long before Baghban, Motilal had made a far better film. Recently I read Ravina Tandan’s claims that her father Ravi Tandan had made Zindagi (1976) years before Baghban(2003) on similar story but nobody gives credit to her father. Perhaps it was just emotions of a daughter because then she should have gone little far in 1965 to know CCB which is mother/father of all these films.
When saw at TV many years ago I had instantly liked CCB. Motilal has always been a charming and natural actor.
Thats true and nice observation about Charles Chaplin and Moti Lal.
And man was so good in Lai lappa lai lappa … dancing with Amita(?).
Not only these two songs in CCB but Manna De’s philosophical songs were also quite good.

    You sent on memmory trip.

    Pavan,
    Re: Sharda,
First listened her in Around the world in 8 dollar and then in Suraj- Titali Udi ud ke chali. I never compared her with Lata or Asha or Geeta Dutt or Suman Kalyanpur etc. And I never had any personal problem with the fact that Shankar tried to make her their singer instead of Lata. Because this had happened much before I started listening songs so only her songs were there.
Same way never had any problem with Preeti Sagar, Hemlata, Runa Laila also because listened their songs as their songs only without comparing them with Lata’s or Asha’s.
Probably first singer who generated some problem was Shabbir Kumar and later Munna or Mohd Aziz, then Kumar Sanu then Vinod Rathod and few more. They sound bad leaving exceptions in one or two songs.

RK - How does it feel when you close the circle on some open childhood memories? While I find it satisfying for a moment, in terospect, I feel it should have been left the way it was. My song similar to yours is “yeh dil aur unki nigahon ke saaye”. Sometime when I was about 4-5 yrs old, I heard this on radio in Ludhiana and then never heard it till about 6-7 years back. The first day it was magic but after a few days I felt it lost its lustre.

Anyway, this was a lovely post. I don’t think there is a song with Jaane kyun dil baar baar hota hai. So rest easy :)

RK: and all said and done, Sharda grates on ears. As Lata is rumored to have said about Shankar’s obsession with Lata - “Laove isnot just blind, it is deaf too.”

    RK,

You just cant compare Sharda with Preeti Saagar or Runa Laila (not even Hemlata)..

Watch out Preeti Saagar for the Variety..

    1. Mharo gaam katha paare : Folk : Manthan
    2. My heart is beating : English : Julie
    3. Tumhare bina jee na lage : Semi Classical : Bhumika
    4. Saawan ke din aaye sajanva : Romanitc : Bhumika
    5. Shamsheer bhari na : Mujara : Mandi

    Listen again.. beautiful songs..

and Runa Laila was top class in Gharonda
    1. Tumhe ho na ho mujhko to itna yakeen hai
    2. Do dewaane shehar me
    3. Damadam is fanastic too

  10. Aditya on May 29th, 2008 11:41 pm

RK: IMO Sharda is miles ahead of Preeti Sagar, Runa Laila or Hemlata…..yes, I mean it. She is miles ahead when it comes to having the most irritating, grating, “unmusical” voice to have graced HFM. Only, Shabbir Kumar comes somewhere close.

I completely agree with Pavan when he says you can’t compare her with Preeti Sagar or Runa Laila, who might not have had voices best suited for playback (at least not conforming to the playback singing template we had got used to in those days), but they had very good, ear-pleasing voices.

It’s interesting that Pavan mentions shamsheer barahna (Mandi). That’s my childhood memory, my “jab bhi ye dil”. I first heard it on one of those sugam sangeet programmes on DoorDarshan and the lovely tune and preeti sagar’s smiling face just stuck on. At that time I remembered it as Shamsheer Bhare Na - something that didn’t make any sense to me. Many years later I bumped into this ghazal by Bahadur Shah Zafar:

shamsheer barahana maang ghazab baalon ki mahak phir vaisi hai
juuDe ki gundhavat bahar-e-Khuda zulfon ki laTak phir vaisi hai

And then I re-discovered the song. What a feeling it was!

    @Subrat (7),

-When Love is blind but lovers can listen they use voice and touches to communicate their feelings
    - when Love is deaf too (along with blind) then touch remains the only way to communicate the feelings
    - And even if lovers have all the senses (seeing and listening and saying) working very well then also SILENCE IS THE BEST THING, that can occur in any love:)

Lata Ji has been quite a witty woman. No doubt about that.

  12. RK on May 30th, 2008 1:50 am

    @Subrat (6),

For me - This closing the circle after gap of some/ so many years leaves negative impression in case of films more than the music and song. Exceptions can be there, though to music also.
This happen more with people, places etc and so many times we feel after living years in a longing to re-visit an old place or meeting again an old familiar person and when we finally do it our childhood memories and impressions which we carried all these years get a blow.
Is it possible to listen Ye Dilm aur Unki Nigahon ke saaye only in instrumental version without the singing?
I remember very nice use of first flute then santur and sitar and perhaps in between Jaltarang also and they are repeated again and again with prominence of flute.
Do you get same dejection with another song of Lata falling in smiliar category “Baharon mera jeevan bhee sanwaron”?
Kahiyam has not used High Pitched voice of Lata while Jaidev has got Lata singing in high pitch.
Is that difference your reason of losing attraction for the song?

  13. RK on May 30th, 2008 2:32 am

    @Pavan (9),

I am already a big admirer of Vanraj Bhatia’s musical work done in parallel movement’s films. Have listened countless times Bhumika, Manthan, Junoon, Kalyug and many other films he has done.

Runa Laila has also been liked by me for her filmi and few non filmi songs. In her hindi film works, not only in Gharonda but she had sung a good song in Ek Se Badhkar Ek also.

But did not like her singing of Ghalib ghazals and other Urdu ghazals. There comparisons automatically comes because many singers have sung quite better than many other singers and we have best among good there.

There is some confusion regarding last comment(5).

Exact meaning was - I have liked Preeti Sagar, Hemlata’s songs for their own merits and without comparing to Lata, Asha and Geeta Dutt etc, who have been old and established singers. Preeti and Hemlata made their place on their own merits and they got good songs to sing so never comparison came.

Variety is fine but I have always felt that My Heart is beating’s singing has not matched the tune and lyrics. She sings with unclear pronunciations of the words.

Besides established regular names in Hindi film music many singers have given us many good songs which are liked for their own merits.

Usha Utthup’s Dum Maro Dum, or songs in Pyara Dushman and Shaan etc are her own. we will not go to compare them with Lata Asha’s songs.

We like independently Babban Mirzas Khuda Khair kare and we will not compare him with Rafi and at the same time we will not say that he is suitable for play back singing in hindi films.

Or Sharma Bandhu’s song in Parinaya- jaise suraj ki garmee se …

Narendra Chanchal’s Bobby and Benaam songs go well with us inspite of his singing in high pitched voice but perhaps we will not listen him giving playback for actors.

Sharda is not alone in the category of weaker singers there have been many others so if we compare overall then perhaps Sharda’s few songs will be accepted better than theirs.

new big line makes previous line as a short line :)

  14. RK on May 30th, 2008 2:44 am

    @Aditya (10),
Some things have mentioned in (13) in response to Pavan’s comment. some additional points.
and its not limited to Sharda or any other singer.

    a general approach

We have a whole trend before us that top league singers who are like supereme gods in the music area have also sung bad songs because composition was not good, composers could not make good tune, lyricist could not write good song and overall songs remained bad songs inspite of good voices of these singers. No singer is there in hindi cinema since begining who has not sung a bad song.
and at same time excaptions are there with so called bad singers also, who have occasionally given us some good songs.
For example Shabbir Kumar. He was unbearable in Coolie Mard, Pyar Jhukta Nahin etc and rather he was one reason for decline of Amitabh Bachchan in mid 80s becasue Kishor Kumar did not sing for AB for some years and Shabbir Kumar enetred in to the picture. AB got KK’s voice again in Sharabi and song Manzilen apnee jagah hain raste apnee jagah, proved why KK was KK.
But same Shabbir Kumar was found good in Betaab’s Jab Hum jawan honge and parvaton se aaj mein takra gaya and people liked him singing Zihale masti for Mithun.
Inspite of all nasal weaknesses and strange singing way Kumar Sanu was liked by majority in Criminal singing Tu mile Dil khile aur jeene ko kya chahiye.
then we have singers singing in strange ways pyar to hona hee ta (instead of tha).

kings exist even among bad ones also.

  15. kcp on May 31st, 2008 6:49 am

Yesterday evening of mine was ruined by attending Mohd Rafi Nite by Shabbir Kumar !! He was too bad man !! He was shouting on top of his voice and was instructing the band to increase their volume too !! He was pathetic in Madhuban Mein Raadhika !! Just took my wife and son from the moddle of the show, when he finished that one…I appreciate his love towards Rafi and I think that it is very pure….but tribute ke naam pe logon ko kyon takleef bhai ?

Sharada was a good composer than singer, IMHO…

  16. RK on June 2nd, 2008 2:22 am

    @kcp,

So Shabbir Kumar does Mohd Rafi nites now! Cant recall when heard him last time in any hindi film. Perhaps Kumar Sanu is also following this route of stage shows. Perhaps this bring good money and less judgement from masses.

Re: Shabbir Kumar, we have to consider the fact that Boss in his interview seemed quite happy with Betaab’s songs and often called them his one of the best works and rated Shabbir Kumar very high there.

Re: Sharda, do you have many songs composed by her? I am not sure but If it was composed by her really then I know one Rafi song.

If its true as you say then it saves Shankar’s obsession

Kuch to baat hogee warna yun hee koi bewafa nahin hota :)
