Jhansi Ki Rani

Recently, I have realized that there are so many women editors out there and have worked on quite few successful films. Anyway, this article ain’t about them; I just wanted to mention that, bus yun hi. But, this article, is about ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’. No, no, the film is not about to release. That was my first thought when the film was in the news. Well, Sushmita Sen, will be now directing her dream project..

“Me directing a film, it’s actually destiny,” Sen told reporters in Mumbai on Friday.

“I was never meant to direct (the film)… it just so happens that I will be directing it.”

Before you say she is following Farah Khan, Aamir Khan and now Ajay Devegan - That is not the case, fortunately. But unfortunately, she is making the film because she could not find a decent director to direct the film. That is a worry. Why would not any director want to work on this film?

Sushmita Sen couldn’t find the right author to bring to life her dream period project Jhansi Ki Rani. And this made the former Miss Universe to take up the job of directing the film herself.

So Sushmita sen will don the role of Jhansi Ki Rani on the screen and off the screen, that is, she will direct & produce the film and play the role of Jhansi Ki Rani. That is a lot of to do. Can she handle the pressure? Will she be able to make a decent product or it will go all pear-shaped for her?

I like her, she is a classy woman, in fact, she is like an old wine.. with age her beauty is improving, but her acting.. have not liked any of her films, I don’t like her voice and dialogue delivery or whatever.. but she has that fierce look to play Jhansi Ki Rani. I reckon, as an actor she could do a justice but as a director/producer, I guess we will have to wait and see.. I sincerely hope she gets right support to make this film.

It’ll be nice to see an actress turn into a successful director/producer. You mentioned that you’ve noticed many women editors who’ve worked on successful films–I’m still waiting for the day to arrive in Bollywood when there will be just as many successful female directors as there are male directors ;)

you regretting that you didn’t have a question regarding that subject in your survey, eh?! ;-)

according to the ibn article.. there are more female directors in india than in hollywood..

@Honhaar: :) man, there are just way too many questions to ask about Bollywood than possible to include in what is supposed to be a “brief” survey. Bollywood may have more female directors than in Hollywood, but still there is definitely a glass ceiling. You know, your post has actually inspired me to work on an article about the Bollywood glass ceiling which I will submit through projekt iView in a few days :)

ya I have seen Sohrab Modi’s Jhansi Ki Rani. Many years ago on DD.
Everything he kept what is required to make a big and impressive historical film. Big sets and all kind of arrangements and it was acoloured film made in 1950s but Mehtab could not match up with the image of LaxmiBai, which is etched in the minds of people of India. Sohrab Modi’s insistence to make his wife as Jhansi Ki Rani was not a good decision.
This role needed a better actress.
I need to see it now to have a better understanding. Perhaps DVD can be available.
