Jhoom Barabar Jhoom - Music Review
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom(JBJ) is an eagerly awaited music score, for the names attached with it, the combination of Shankar Ehsaan Loy(SEL), Gulzar & Shaad Ali, which struck gold the last time they teamed up for Bunty aur Babli.
It is certainly a more mature album, which startles you with the choice of crazy combinations, be it Bhangra with Gulzar’s poetry interspersed with a techno beat or Vishal ‘Pentagram’ Dadlani crooning a small-town sensibility-induced light jam up track.
The title track appears in 3 versions, all three equally listenable. But the one featuring AB Sr should go down as the most popular and infectious of the lot.
SEL have created a wildly infectious title track, and it will rock the nation in the coming season, no doubts on that.
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
Gulzar is in an ‘Anand Bakshi’ mood in this track, and no one is complaining, as even SEL is in a Laxmi-Pyare mode.
Aaja aaja rabba ishquey ki khol gutthiyaan
Kaate na munaafe naal mol gutthiyaan
Te laagi laagi na jo lage aashiqui
Udti udti ankhiyon ke ladgaye pechey lad gaye ne
Preet lagaake jhoom….
Jhooti moothi baatein sunke
Gungunaati aankhen sunke
Jalaawe bujhaawe jalaawe bujhaawe oye mombattiyaan
Ye ishq puraana paapi
Har baar khata karta hai
Har baar bachaata hoon main
Har baar ye jaan marta hai
Raaz koi aa gaya to
Baar baar kaleje pen a maar ankhiyaan..
Ticket to Hollywood
Great intro, this track puts a taak-jhoom-jhoom-taak beat against Neeraj Shridhar’s mischievous but very in-sync voice to some addictive results. Definitely not ‘auna-pauna hi sahi’, a kind of a tribute to ‘lauta de mera/paanch rupaiyya baara aana’(no attempt to compare the two).
There is a ultracool rap somewhere in the backdrop, and then there is a lazy beat that slowly paves way for Gulzar’s words to take over in a now-sufi ambience!
Zameen se do inch upar hawaa pe chalti hai tu
Kaheen pairo ka nishaan jo pade to jhukoon
Shehar ke us mod par, jahaan se tu paas ho
Kahey to main zindagi bhar waheen pe rukoon
Kiss of Love
This would be my current favorite from the album, there are no reasons. The song could be called a monotonous beats, non-happening lyrics and sad chorus track. But I love it!
The courage, with which the song executes itself, makes you have that special place for it.
Tastefully sung by Vishal(of Vishal-Shekhar), it contrasts the ‘rock’ brought in by him against a sassy bass of Vasundhara Das’ now established vocals.
Its good that her voice has not been tinkered around much, to give it a raw, predictable effect.because that acts as a scintilliating prelude to Vishal’s lines to conclude the verses.
Mud mud ke na dekh zamaana muh ke bal gir jaayega
Edi maar ke rakh saara ye waqt palat ke aayega
Bol Na Halke Halke
For some reasons, I just cant take the images of SRK slowly strolling through sarson ke khet out of my mind while listening to this track. The imagery suddenly shifts to a western environ, thanks to Ehsaan’s slick and now trademark interludes.
The song exploits the laid-back, relaxing, healing effect in Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice(well and interestingly complemented by Mahalakshmi) and presents one of the best romantic tracks to come out in recent times.
The magic of Gulzar lies in bathing complex meaning in simple words, and it can be seen in full bloom in this song.
Dhaage tod laao chandni se noor ke
Ghoonghat hi banaalo roshni se noor ke
Aa neend ka sauda karein
Ek khwaab dein, ek khwaab lein
Ek khwaab to aankhon mein hai, ek chand ki takiye tale
Kitne dino se ye aasma bhi soya nahi hai, isko sula dein
Umre lagi kehte hue
Do lafz the, ek baat thi
Wo ek din sau saal ka, sau saal ki wo raat thi
Kaisa lage jo chup chaap dono, pal pal mein poori sadiyaan bita dein
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom - KK, Sukhvinder Singh, Mahalaxmi Iyer & Shankar Mahadevan
Beech bazaari dangey lag gaye do talwaari ankhiton ke
Jaan katey ke jigar katey ab in do dhari ankhiyon se
Chand ki utaar li hain dono baaliyaan
Aaja chandni kootenge, aasmaan ko lootenge
This song would be closest to the auteur-earthy feel in Shaad Ali films, and he rightly teams up with Gulzar to bring out the highway da dhaba feel in his films:
Yaheen kaheen shab kaatenge
Chillum chataai baatenge
Chal dhooaan udaa ke jhoom
A great album, it could have done away with too much dependence on an otherwise great theme track.

That Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy had pretty much lost their zing was evident post the fun soundtrack of Bunty Aur Babli, as they followed it up with consecutive duds like Salaam E Ishq, Don and KANK. Their collaboration with one of the greatest writers in the history of Indian cinema, Gulzarsaab was earthy, real, and chartbusting with B’nB.
“Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” soundtrack for lack of a better word is…shit.
Bunty Aur Babli wasn’t exactly poetic material, but it was the uncharacteristic simplicity of Gulzarsaab’s words that elevated SEL’s average tunes into heartwarming songs (most of the them). He discarded the chaste Hindi/Urdu vocabulary and used simple language to beautifully convey the dreams and aspirations of the two characters. In JBJ, the lyrical brilliance doesn’t quite stand up to his previous works. It just didn’t hook me the way the words of Gulzarsaab would.
Don’t even get me started on the insipid SEL tunes. For long, their formula of backing a pedestrian tune with an electric guitar riff and heavy percussion has found success. Now, it’s just getting fucking annoying. Buck up guys, because now you’ve reduced yourself to composing songs that might play for a month or so at a club or two but will be forgotten soon after the movie releases. You have the talent to offer a lot more.
They (with also V&S) are the new Jatin-Lalit of YRF. What a waste.
Exactly. Vishal-Shekhar…the guys who emulated RD Burman with Jhankaar Beats…that was genuinely inspired music…look at the crap they churn out now. Jatin-Lalit still composed some really good songs and also did good work outside the YRF banner. SEL have just become a garage band now. Whatever happened to the passion that we saw in Tanhai, Jaane Kyon, or the zing of DCH and Koi Kahe. The brilliance of So ja chanda, bhumbro, etc.
i would not mind if vishal-shekhar churned out something like Karam, Shabd and Home Delivery - that is at least decent if not ground breaking.
i found jatin-lalit’s music as “aaaaaahhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaa” - don’t get me wrong, it just went on and on.
i think, SEL are composing a non-filmy album, so lets see if they have still in it or….
whoa..whoa…I completely disagree Vishal Shekhar have been giving great and new music, except Tara rum pum, all the other albums are great and as far as Kank and Salaam-e-ishq are concerned, they are no ways duds, The two tracks Tumhi dekho na and Kabhi alvida na kehna are brilliant and you have to hear Ya rabba from Salaam-e-ishq before actually calling it a dud, and when you look musicians please look at the other work they do for example Pentagram who has vishal as the lead vocalist have this new song voice, which is about the most brilliant rock track composed by an indian band.
JBJ’s title tracks sounds damn good. But Ab is looking so disgusting in all those colourful, peacock hats n weird clothes, dancing with that big paunch.
SEL music was really bad in KANK. they applied the exact formula that they cracked for Kal Ho Na Ho. N whats wrong with Gulzar. even he is sounding so reptetive. the lines, words n thoughts in JBJ reminds me of bunty aur babli. aasman, chanda, nur, need ka sauda karein, khwab de aur khwab lein. tangibles with intangibles… cant take anymore. sirjee, please some new metaphors in a new way.
vishal-shekhar n javed akhtar delivered the damn shit for tara bum bum. words, music, thought,
everything.
though hav always felt that javed is much better poet than gulzar. n gulzar is much better lyricist.
btw,has anyone listened to indian ocean’s song for shoonya ? supposdly its good.
@Phoenixnu, is Shoonya out? I am dying to hear it man! Anurag might update us better on it though..
@ak, do you know any place I could listen to Pentagram’s new song, have heard that its good.
guys, on JBJ, i would like to say just give it few more listens(gosh, dont know the correct word, this sounds weird, but anyways). its not that bad at all.
The music of this movie is quite energetic and entertaining..hope the movie too turns out to be good. Lot of my friends happen to like the “Ticket To Hollywood” song including me. Check out the streaming songs of the movie at http://chatradio.blogspot.com/2007/05/jhoom-barabar-jhoom.html
Any idea on the release date ?
The official release date is 15th June.
Last film: Shootout at lokhandwala, ek chaalis, khamosh
music: JBJ, Kailasa Jhoomo Re, Agnee(Saadho Re)
It didnt live up to the expectations. cuz It was hyped up to be one of the best Albums.. 2007 [-([-([-(..
My POV. The genre of Remix, Fusion is %-(.. To certain extent its enjoyable but when every track that is made/ there is a remix with it .. it really takes away the originality of the song and the lyrics now a days ~X(Not all of them but most of them are ~X( )…. I would still prefer Jatin-lalit Music because they had if not some but couple of good Albums. It might be cuz I am still an ardent fan of the oldies, but Remixes still don’t sit well w me
P.S I think if you keep on hearing it you might like the songs but except for 2 songs none of them really strike a chord in the first go ..
