aisa lagta hai ki shad ali ki filmen to ek ke baad ek badi hoti gayin lekin unka ilma usi anupaat mein sikudta gaya hai.SAATHIYA ki taazgi JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM mein sire se gayab hai.JBJ mein naach-gana hai.stars hain.videshi location hain.lak-dak set hai aur chamakdaar costume hai.bas, kahani gayab hai, jabki shad ali ne kahani ko badhane ke liye ANURAG KASHYAP aur TIGMANSHU DHULIA ki madad li hai.teenon hindi filmon ke yuva aur samajhdaar filmkar hain aur milkar aisi kahani likh rahe hain…TAUBA.
yashraj films ke banner se aayi yeh lagatar doosri sadharan film hai.film mein ek gana hai jhoom brabar jhoom…use AMITABH BACHCHAN gate hain…jab woh is geet ko gaate hue thirakte hain to aaspaas mein maujood log naachne lagte hain.nishchit hi AMITABH BACHCHAN is geet mein josh bhar dete hain, lekin sirf ek geet ki chashni film ko kitne meetha kar sakti thi.modern kaandeo ke roop mein AMITABH BACHCHAN prem ka alakh jagate hain, lekin film ke mukhya kirdar aur kalakar apni seemaon ke karan bar-bar ladkhadate hain.
apne dost aur rishtedar ke intezar mein london ke ek station par takraye ricky thukral aur alvira khan ek-doosre ko jahansa dene ke liye apne-apne prem ki jhoothi kahani gadhte hain.inteza ke un do ghanton mein hi woh ek-doosre ko chahne lagta hain.baad mein apne mangadhant jhooth ko todne ke liye unhe ek aur jhooth ka sahara lena padta hai.shad ali do kirdaar aur kuch prasngon ko lekar naach-gaane se bhari kahani ka tana-bana taiyaar kiya hai.yeh tana-bana itna kamjor hai ki ANURAG KASHYAP aur TIGMANSHU DHULIYA se madad lene ke bawjood kahani bun nahi paati.kya is baar bhi ANURAG KASHYAP maafi mangege?
jbj mein geeton ka filmankan achchha lagta hai.agar unhe music video ke roop mein alag-alag dekhen ya film ke gaane disco ya party mein bajaayen to jhhmne ka man karega.gulzar ke anokhe bol shankae ehsaan loy ka madhur sangit hi film ko sambhal paate hain.gulzar in dino os mein mint ki taazgi milakar geet likh rahe hain.waqt ki maang gulzar ko kahan se kahan le aayi hai?
abhinay ke lihaj se charon yuva kalakaron mein LARA DATTA baji marti hain.anaida aur laila dono hi roopon mein woh charitra mein dhalti hain.ABHISHEK BACHCHAN mehnat kar rahe hain.kai baar woh ricky thukral ke kirdar se chitak jaate hain.peity zinta ke kuch bure performance mein se ek hai JBJ.bobby deol nritya mein ramte hain, lekin abhinay ki sanjidgi unmein thodi kam hai.
yashraj films ki shad ali nirdeshit JBJ nirash karti hai.bharpoor sansadhnon, pratibhaon aur suvidhaon ke bawjood is sadharn film ke liye kisi ek ko doshi nahi thahraya ja sakta, leki chamtakaar samjhe ja rahe ADITYA CHOPRA ki soch aur packajing to kathghare mein aa hi jati hai.aakhirkar film marketting, munafa aur manoranjan matra nahi hai…darshak kuch aur bhi chahte hain.

Whatever goes up, comes down. *Anywhere*! See, I am definitely not one of those Yashraj bashers but I see the end for Yashraj’s arrogance soon. Unless, Aditya Chopra changes his thinking that only star power sells, even if it is a third grade script.

By buying out all the stars in the industry, they have created a big crisis in the industry. Producers don’t have artistes to make movies. Maybe this is a boon in disguise, atleast now other producers will make sensible movies and not depend on stars.

Aditya Chopra should understand that audience are not chutiyas. Give them beautiful hero and heroines, glossy locations and smart ass comedy, picture hit hain! Nahi bhai, phat hojayega.

I still don’t understand that why such a big production house can’t get good stories? Is there such a dearth of good story tellers in the industry? Or maybe the insiders have blocked the approach to every outsider and they feel all these struggling writers must be chutiyas and they own the official creative brains of the country, whatever the reasons, it is time they should first zero on the subject and cast accordingly.

In YRF, I guess pictures are made just the opposite way. Haan, we have Abhishek, Preeti is anyway there, throw in Bobby and Lara and get Shankar, Ehsan, Loy and now let’s think about a script.

When you actually meet these so called great people, they talk as if they know everything, and actually give you a complexion.

Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Salaam Namaste, Neal N Nikki, Tara Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, all have been a major bloopers!

I never liked Hum Tum, Veer Zaara bored me, Fanaa was illogical,Bunty aur Babli senseless, Kabul Express yuck, let’s not talk about Dhoom! Why can’t you guys get great stories that Yash Chopra previously was a master in?

JBJ is such a waste of great potential. The film smacks of arrogance and smug. The way Shaad Ali has made the film it seems that he expected the viewers to have read the synopsis of the film before entering the cinema hall. There is no story in the film. Nothing at all. If I want to see extravagant dances and costumes, I’d rather watch MTV. Why should I pay for such trash masquerading as cinema? I hope Aditya Chopra has finally learnt his lesson that rehashes of English films and mere packaging do not a film make. The guys at YRF have taken us for a ride many times, its time they stop churning out awful stuff like JBJ. Thoda original socho Adi. I’m sure you have young people coming to you with fresh ideas.

Guys, I may be ganged up on for saying this, but I seriously loved JBJ. You need to get the movie for what it is- a smart, sassy and subversive take on every Bollywoodism that exists. YRF films have never had stories. JBJ is a triumph because it knows how inane it actually is, and prefers(rightfully) to never take itself seriously. This is the most fun I’ve had at the cinmas in a long time. I’ve never seen so many wink-nod allusions to the masala filmmaking style of the 70s. Manmohan Desai is a contented soul somehwere. Anurag has no reason to apologize. JBJ is one of the zaniest products out of Bollywood in recent times…its the film that Jaan-e-Mann wanted to be but didn’t have the guts to be. I’m glad JBJ is what it is for what it is!

“Suneel Darshan ki le rahe the kyon ki woh ek independent producer ke taur per kamzor hai. Coprprate big dicks ke aage apna asshole tashtari mein la kar rakh dete hain. ”

    This is plain offensive.

  15. RKs- i guess sarcasm escapes you.. this film is based on a script “sangam mail” which i wrote four years ago before bunty aur bubli.. which in turn was based on a treatment by tishu he wrote when they were both assisting on DIL SE.. its a derivative on my script.. its the directors take on it.. i guess nobody got his take.. but yes i still stand by “sangam mail”.. it was a simple lower middle class story set in new delhi where the hero was from palika bazar and the girl from kathak kendra.. a love story set in Barsaati’s.. if they decide to take it to london and france its their problem, if the director decides to not make it a love story and make it a glitzy tribute to nasir hussain and manmohan desai .. its his choice.. as long as i am not credited for writing it when they don’t use my writing.. which shakalaka did.. credited me for what rajesh pandey wrote.. and you being provocative is not going to provoke me.. i spoke about what’s happening on this in a public forum before they even started shooting.. which was covered on Desi Train.. so be informed before you start to get all vindictive over what spoke to you about last time.. didn’t see you on PFC since, was it because you were not getting an oppurtunity to take off on me..

Well said Ajay. It’s wrong to criticze Anurag for every bad movie he’as associated with, whatever may be the reasons behind them. and as such, he needs to do a ‘Main Aisa Hi Hoon’ every now and then to do the stuff that really matters i.e. ‘No Smoking’. Like Clint Eastwood says and practices, one must mix the commercial projects with the passionate independent ones. That’s the only way you can survive in any industry that deals with mass consumption.

    Dear Abzee,
To hell with civility that, in a way, means suppression. Go for free expression. Let your views , the essence of what you are, be derided, obliterated, and killed by the civil society. Get subversive. Seek destruction of myths. All kinds of myths. The idea of excellence being the foremost of them all. That is the credo of an artiste. The class theorists invented the idea of civility and the rule of the law, to preserve and pickle their decadent lifestyles. But what would you say to someone calling JBJ a subversive film? That makes Aaditya Chopra and KJo as the great rebels of Indian cinema, ahead of their times yet with times becasue very soon the ads about ‘fifty crore collected worldwide in the first week’ will start appearing to prove that JBJ is a mega hit, as was KANK.

And thanks to the PFC Administrator for deleting my views. That only proves that Hindi words have greater impact and putting similar views in English would have been accepted as contemporary and regular expression. You cannot ‘pelo’ but ‘fuck’ you can. Now, this is just an illustration to make a point, dear administrator. ;)

As far as Anurag’s rejoinder to my post is concerned, it hardly means anything. The whole idea was to point out the obvious hypocricy in his approach. Instead of admitting it, he blabbers in defence of the indefensible. The manner and alacrity with which he tries to disassociate himself from bad projects is so shameful and unbecoming. He should have told the filmmakers that his name must not appear in the credits as he did not have faith in those films. It is such a simple thing to do.

And there is nothing personal in all this. We are discussing human fraility and foibles, and sundry other afflictions we all suffer from.

    Hi guys

JBJ has caused so much trouble? I don’t know the personal attack on anurag and I dont really want to, but yes I am aware of anurag’s version of the script and then it becoming JBJ, mostly ofcourse hearsay from common friends.
I have to say that I went to see jhoom BECAUSE I knew anurag had been a part of the film at some point. I also knew that yashraj and shaad had given the film its own spin and had made their own glitzy glamorous version of a smart and fun idea. but I still saw jhoom, to see how bad it could be. And there in lies the secret to yashraj success. We all go and see their films at least once. Because we all expect them to maybe, perhaps be a DDLJ in hiding. But they are not, and they have not been for a while.

Aditya Chopra and his juhu boys club may claim that they make popular cinema, but what they are making is just money. And the money is being made only on past laurels and star power. No wonder they all have such a smug, all -knowing attitude towards film-making and all the films churned out are filled with this smugness.

I thought that was the problem with B and B too. They thought they are making a fun film and they had fun making it and they had fun wathching it. But none of them had the objectivity to realise that B and B, a film that COULD have been landmark and funny was infact actually not. It was below mediocre and with some fantastic music and that was enuff to rake in the “50 crores in first week” collections. And that gave the director and producer reason to make an even bigger, louder, campier, cheesier and terrible film than before, add more stars than before, add more bling and ofcourse get rid of whatever semblance of a script that B and B had.

Their were some really insane and crazy ideas in JBJ , u cd appreciate them and laugh at what must have gone into them, but if their was any hidden brilliance in there, it was completely lost in the loudness, brashness and bad acting. So JBJ makes me wonder, is it ok to be on such a trip, that you dont care whether people are with you on it or not?

Anurag – Thanks for the clarification in your comments (15 & 4 although there was some reading btwn the lines required). For myself and I’m sure lots of others out there this is new info. I didn’t know a thing about “Sangam Mail” and often times these behind the scenes stories of how a script starts and what it eventually becomes (unfortunately I can’t say “evolves” into as that would imply progression of some sort) are left untold, so most people don’t really know the kinds of politics and all that go into the making of such big films.

It really, truly sad when a writer puts his/her soul into a concept, fleshes out characters, puts so much time and energy into creating settings, atmosphere, mood, giving the screenplay a purpose… and then its all trashed in the name of mass marketing…

Anurag, its painful to know that a beautiful concept “Sangam Mail” hasn’t been translated to cinema, rather its been twisted and commercialized with JBJ as a result. I’m sorry man.

Would you ever consider making “Sangam Mail” the way you had envisioned it? Or do you think the concepts been tarnished now to the point where you’d rather move on to other things?

For what its worth, personally I’d love to see “Sangam Mail” become the film it was meant to be…

Ritu – “the money is being made only on past laurels and star power” SO DAMN TRUE. But not for long. Even if the film makes money because people are curious or they go because they’ve got a certain affinity for YashRaj Films, if they don’t like what they see then they won’t be as eager to go see the next film.

As the expectations come down, so do the numbers…

The biggest thing is that audiences are getting the sense of whether a film is good or bad early on. Right from the promos, a lot of people can tell if a film will have a solid, gripping story or if its a “fluff” film. Others wait to see the general feedback & reviews from the opening weekend.

Personally I don’t agree with your comments on B&B – I acutally really enoyjed the film. I saw it as a “throwback film” (Prem Chopra, Ranjit, all the 70’s songs playin in the B/G, etc) and thought it was well done.

@ajay. “Box office performances of his last few films”. I don’t remember any of Shahrukh Khan’s recent films flopping. Both “Don” and “Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna” had grossed above 40 crores. Maybe you don’t like him. That doesn’t make him a flop actor.

YRF is my personal favourite and i m totally biased towards it … Bt this Film is a total let down ..
I disagree that the film lacks the script ….in fact i think when the film was conceptualized it had a fresh thought in mind
but as it gradually was being made ..the Star Power overtook and it was reduced to a mere display of clothes, music and a la ‘nach Baliye’
Every scene seemed larger than life but lacked the basic emotions ..
I still am nt convinced the way Abhishek n Priety realise that they are in love after talkin about their made up love stories for jus 2 hours..
No denying that it cannot happen.. Ddlj (Teh same banner film showed it convincingly in 30 days time) and Veerzaara in 2 days time ..
atleast these movies convinced u that the couple were in love and brought out the sentiments attached to the scene
This movie jus shows the lead actors hamming every emotion .. (abhishek and Priety)
Lara and Bobby wwere a refreshing change and they cud act better than the others
and m still wondering wt made Amitabh do that one song played aftr evry half an hr
Is he trying to start the trend of Male Item nbr ???
I think YRF needs to get over this Rani – priety – Abhishek Fixation and get actors that suit those characters .

I just ran across this site because after I watch a movie I’ll do a search for reviews to see what others thought, but I didn’t expect such an uproar over JBJ. I feel like I watched a different movie, because I loved it. I thought it was clever, fun and filmed with great imagination. I live in the US and discovered Indian movies about 7 years ago and became hooked. I guess I’m watching them from a different perspective because I wasn’t used to this type of filmaking so it’s a treat for me, but I guess for others raised on them it is nothing special. The photography during musical numbers is usually brillant when you see a really good film. The camera is constantly moving and everyone is placed just right for the camera. This was even made fun of in some of the musical numbers in JBJ especially during the dance contest. Abhishek really surprised me with his comedic skills and this was the first time I really liked Bobby Deol. Preity is always great and hopefully Lara Dutt will get some good roles from this. The only parts that bored me were with Amitabh and it wasn’t because he was bad because he wasn’t, it just seemed out of place with the rest of the movie. This is my first post and I’m sorry it’s so long, but after reading so much negative comments on this film I had to add another positive one.
