Jodha Akbar : Music Review
AR Rahman: The Maestro
In a world of chaos and endless insanity, there are a few things one wishes always keep coming….
Morning steaming cup of tea and untouched newsprint, the unruffled texture of Scotch, an astonishing book you feel blessed to lay your hands on, good cinema and of course, good music.
They restore your faith in life, in that after all the grilling, you will be treated to your 15 some day. AR Rahman’s music constitutes one of those healers for me. And it not only remains intact in its untainted form, it gets better by the day. Here is one guy who refuses to look back. And thank God for that.
Jodha Akbar is the final period film composition from Rahman, or so we are told. So I would like to give the score what it deserves, an effort to understand it from all possible angles – the conception, the technical specifics of the songs like the instruments used and the journey of the songs. Too bad I am not well endowed with enough resources for accessing all that information but I will try and see if someone can contribute in this effort.
Rahman has been showering us time and again with his prowess on diverse musical forms. From Punjabi Giddha & Bhangra to Gujarati Garbha to Carnatic to Qawwali to Devotional Bhajan to Arabic, he has been a constant teacher opening up these huge floodgates of scintillating music orchestrations and vocal styles, in his Midas touch and a knack for perfection. But one form that has been an undercurrent of all these manifestations is Sufi, a riddle that takes a lifetime to solve.
This mystique Arabic and Sufi air is created by string instruments like The Oud(used mostly as an accompaniment for solo ‘takhti’ singers), The Qanoun(similar to a Santoor only the strings are laid on a metallic table) which provides the sharp edges to a Qawwali or a long recital) and The Saz(a Turkish instrument which looks like a guitar), and the one-string Rababeh(Lebanese folk sing-along instrument).
Coming back to Rahman, who started with a simple keyboard, he would strike the magic keys and these simple tunes would later take myriad wondrous forms, in all their flowing exuberance and glory.
When such a composer becomes so big for any project, the whole ball game becomes quite a spectacle to witness, it can swing either ways, and that risk adds life to the ‘critical’ projects.
It is no joke for the players in this game, they have no option than to win.
Rahman has been winning this game for as long as I can think, with minor exceptions or flaws. Lagaan, Swades, Guru, Yuva, Mangal Pandey, Rang De Basanti, Sivaji and now Jodha Akbar. When has the expectation from him being any less but the sky?
When I listened to Azeem-o-shaan shehenshah, it for a quick moment made me think of Rahman dressed in the Mughali Zirah Baktar(armoured dress) and battle all these expectations at the peak of fury and rage. Pretty short-lived moment of fun.
Jodha Akbar is interesting because it looks at reinventing an oft-misunderstood history. It pitches love against politics. We know Akbar the Great as a majestic leader, a shehenshah. Here we get to see him as a human, what the man was made of, his emotional composition. And how the early events in his life changed the shape of the Mughal Empire and the nation on the whole. And here we get to see the oft-ignored historical character of Jodhaa, a Rajput Princess who shaped the destinies of many a wars and the warrior at the helm.
I am interested in knowing if Akbar-Birbal has been explored.
Kiran Deohans is shooting a film after long, in his noticeably small repertoire.
The film is done in sync sound.
The Soundtrack

Coming to the score, I like the way the composer is going away from his trademark theme-lines and addictive hooks. I have been relishing the layered work that’s been coming out from his stable, and I would consider Bose, Mangal Pandey, Swades and Jodha Akbar in this streak. And I am glad that the songs in this album are as long as one would want them, mature, complete pieces in their own.
Javed Akhtar refrains from using chaste Urdu and achieves a fine balance between the different sensibilities involved in the film, which is all the more applaudable considering the great taste our nation has got for controversies.
1. Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah - Mohd. Aslam, Bonny Chakravarti
This is one of the most visual track I have heard in recent times. The sound designed has to be heard on a good system to be believed, you will practically see a battle scene, the army being lined up, war cries in your living room. It feels as is few mad musicians and singers were let free in the recording studio and what came out is this mad track that goes from an aggressive war cry to a celebration of the grandeur, touching upon Mughal war cries in Urdu to a much dehati UP kinda paean genre. The song is a journey and will take many hearings to explore all the possible trips. For starters, try the Marhaba Marhaba trip or once just focus on the swords crashing and the non-musical sounds, or the one where you just focus on the percussion.
Or sample the pure rush when the chorus crescendos through the sargams and aalaaps to a climactic “Jalaluddin Akbar”. You almost feel here is a larger than life monster out on a prowl. OK bad comparison, but bottomline:It’s a mad mad world out there!

2. In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein - Sonu Nigam, Madhushree
In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein
Pakizah Se Rishte Hain
Koi Qalma Mohabbat Ka
Dohrate Farishtey Hain
A beautiful quartet, translates somewhat into this..
In the lap of these moments
Lie some lovely ties
Like a scripture(Qalmaa = the beginning of Quranic verses) or an ode to love
Which angels seems to be repeating endlessly
(Farishta= Angel, Apostle, Messenger, Prophet)
Khamosh Si Hai Zameen Hairaan Sa Falak Hai
Ek Noor Hi Noor Sa Ab Aasman Talak Hai
The earth is quiet
The sky is amazed
(Falak= Sky, Heaven, Fortune, Fate)
The skies are enveloped in a splendid hue/luster
(Noor= Bright, Light, Luminescence, Luster, Refulgence)
This song has three characters, one of a thoughtful lover(Raja), one the situations(represented by a dramatic chorus-Prajaa) and the third of a devoted female lover(Rani). And it’s the bold interplay of these three that give a distinctive dramatic element to the song. It moves through seasons of love.
After the violent interludes of the chorus, the same serenity is regained and its as relaxing as it could get. The poetry and language is very intriguing here, while you hear the male singer croonings mild Urdu sonnets, the chorus is very Hindustani classical(Dom Tom Tana Nana Dom Tom Tana Dom Dom Tom Tana Nana Dom Tom Tana)
While still sticking to the Urdu flavor. What follows is absolutely shocking and stunning at the same time. The mood moves from ‘Qalma’ and ‘Noor’ to the devotional strains of a Sitar with Madhushree doing what she pretty much always does – adding saccharine to a song at a time when it needs the most.
Samay Ne Yeh Kya Kiya
Badal Di Hai Kaya
Tumhe Maine Paa Liye
Mujhe Tumne Paaya
Mile Dekho Aise Hain Hum
Ke Do Sur Ho Jaise Maddham
Koi Jyada Na Koi Kam
Kisi Raag Mein
Ke Prem Aag Mein
Jalte Dono Hi ke Tan Bhi Hain Man Bhi
Man Bhi Hai Tan Bhi
Tan Bhi Hai Man Bhi
Man Bhi Hai Tan Bhi
At this point, almost in a sawaal-jawaab format, the music comes to a stand-still and the male singer croons, rather almost speaks…
Mere Khwaabon Ke Is Gulistaan Mein
Tumse Hi To Bahaar Chhaai Hai
Phoolon Mein Rang Mere The Lekin
In Mein Khushboon Tumhi Se Aaye Hai
You cannot follow this with anything else but the violent chorus. And that’s exactly what happens. This makes the song ‘mukkamal’, completes the circle.
Clearly, a stand out composition in its structure, treatment and execution.

3. Jashn-E-Bahaara - Javed Ali
This song comes in the league of soft Rahman tracks a la Ae Hairate Ashiquie(Guru), O ri Chhori(Lagaan), Saawariya(Swades) or Des ki Mitti(Bose). Since this category needs to have a distinctive element or two, it is Javed Ali’s affluent abandon of a voice that does the trick along with a Persian string accompaniment.
Rahman has this knack of presenting the ‘joy in pain(gham mein khushi)’ genre in the most hummable form possible. Sample a ‘Ae ajnabi’ or a ‘So gaye hain’(Zubeidaa), and that’s exactly what he does here. What’s rather funny is that everyone forgets the fact these are actually songs with an element of in them.
Kehne ko Jashn-e-bahaara hai
Ishq yeh dekh ke hairaan hai
(jashn=feast, celebration jubilation)
Jashn-e-bahaara would roughly translate to a celebration of beauty/elegance/spring.
‘Kehne ko’ is a significant operative here, it brings the poignant irony to the seemingly pleasing mood.
In between the visible festivities, there is an element of Ranj(Distress, Grief, Sorrow), beautifully expressed in these words…
Phool se khushboo khafa khafa hai gulshan mein
Chhupa hai koi ranj fiza ki chilman mein
The fragrance is shying away from the flowers
There is a hidden sorrow in the curtain of the happy air
(Fiza=atmosphere, environment, Chilman=curtain)
Saare sehmein nazaare hain
Soye soye waqt ke dhaare hain
Aur dil mein khoyi khoyi si baatein hain
The sorrow emotion gets more pronounced slowly.
Kaise kahein kya hai sitam
Sochte hain ab yeh hum
Koi kaise kahein woh hain ya nahi hamaare
Karte to hain saath safar
Faasle hain phir bhi magar
Jaise milte nahi kisi dariya ke do kinaare
Pass hain phir bhi paas nahi
Humko yeh gham raas nahi
Seeshe ki ek diwar hai jaise darmiyaan
Hum ne jo tha naghma suna
Dil ne tha usko chuna
Yeh dastaan hamein waqt ne kaisi sunaai
Hum jo agar hain gumgheen
Woh bhi udhar khush to nahi
Mulaquaato mein hai jaise ghul si gai tanhai
Milke bhi hum milte nahi
Khilke bhi gul khilte nahi
Aankhon mein hai baharein dil mein khiza
This song just might get most popular, but it is too early to predict that, considering there are 5 gems in the album. Chaar aur hote to Akbar ke Navratna poore ho jaate!

4. Khwaja Mere Khwaja - A.R.Rahman
How can a period drama’s score be complete without the Ustaad himself wielding the microphone? So here you have him in all his glory.
In the string of higher pitch tracks like Zikr(Bose), Al Maddath Maula(Mangal Pandey), or Piya Hazi Ali(Fiza), here Rahman serenades the Almighty, a paean to Khwaja ji(saint “piir e mughaan/wali”). Listening to Rahman crooning a devotional number is like watching Tendulkar play in Wankhede(pardon the Siddhuism).
Slow guitar strums open the mystique melody, which slowly gets an obliging tabla’s company and Rahman starts weaving magic, which is sure to have lasting aftertastes. His ‘khwaja jee’ thrown in equal measures almost pinches you that you are still here, its just a song.

5. Mann Mohana - Bela Shende
It would take one some time to come out of the heady web of Khwaja mere Khwaja to appreciate this simple bhajan, though its not a O Paalanhaare, it does have its moments. Mostly the way Bela’s vocals start at a high octave and then sober down with some decent work from Akhtar which shies away from the stereotypes much like Bela’s rendition does. This song should be a character-building aid for Jodha’s character and should play out in installments. Trust Rahman to give you miles and miles of symphony in a bhajan!
Hope the film works the same magic!

J-A music is class apart. A great album to have.
Nice review!! In-depth and studied. like some of the inferences you have made on how the song will play out on screen. how many loops since yesterday?
Lost count of that. Went to office to do this, took some 6 hours.
something tells me mr gowariker is trying hard for an oscar..
Wheres “Khamoshi Main Pukar”???
Tht song is THE song. Only place where arrogance, audacity and sheer brilliance come is A.R.Rahman!!!
Oh wow..double treat..good music and such an informative review! good work, Tushar.
Khwaja mere Khwaja..totally loop worthy!
Cud anyone explain y ‘Khamoshi me pukar’ is not on the album when its all over the net n youtube.com???????????
Because that song is from the soundtrack “Warriors of Heaven and Earth”. People on youTube are messing about.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh.. Tnx!
as soon as u think abt the film Jodha-Akbar I feel it instantly triggers ur imagination & expectations sub-consciously to a different level than the ordinary..few of the reasons for this acc. to me are - ashutosh gowariker,hrithik-ash,the mughal era & of course emperor Akbar himself(or the image v in the popular culture hv of him in our minds to which a major contribution goes to K.Asif’s mughal-e-azam & of course Prithviraj ‘Akbar’ Kapoor)…bt it is only when u c the glimpses of the movie & hear ‘the sound of the film’ u realise abt what u urself hv been expecting from the film…I’m nt sayin that the music of Jodha-Akbar is goin to be the most successful or maybe even most liked music ever bt the film’s topicality itself is so interesting that even an above average(that is acc to Rahman standards)score becomes exciting…Azeem-O-Shaan is all abt describing the bravery & valour of emperor Akbar & d track is very visual in its arrangement..Jashn-e-Bahara is another track I like - though d track(or even d whole soundtrack) doesnt offer nethin novel in content bt still it manages to linger on…Khwaja Mere Khwaja sung by AR Rahman is a track that will grow hugely upon the listener coz it is sung by AR Rahman(Ye Jo Des frm Swades ws a number that did d same to me) & of course the Sufi feel to it transports u to another world & contributes majorly to d track…Rahman has a very soulful & yet powerful voice..I believe even if he sings a song like ‘Ishq Kameena’ his voice wud bring a soulful feel to it…lol..I mean it activates smth that remains dormant otherwise - what is that “smth” I cnt really describe clearly..hvnt heard the rest of the numbers yet bt I think these 3 tracks(album has 5 tracks & 2 instrumentals) r enough to get the album on ur iPod..moreover I think its a mistake to write abt Rahman’s music this soon as it has always had the tendency to grow on u..In Lamho Ke Daaman.. - if u hear this one carefully the composition will remind u of some of the Mission Kashmir’s & Lakshya’s soundtracks & of course of Gowariker & Rahman’s works which shudnt b surprising..bt strangely the other 2 films hv 2 things in common - music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy AND both had Hrithik Roshan…Check it out anyway!..God Bless.Peace :)
Tushar: Excellent post (as always). I have always liked your translations. I know it’s extremely difficult to translate from one language to another, but your choice of the word “lovely” for “Pakeezah” in the original does not do adequate justice. The depth of the original word gets lost, so does the affinity to the next lines about Qalmah and Farishte. If you take the meaning of Pakeezah as Chaste/Pure, it resonates better wih the subsequent lines.
waited a long time for this album to release.
The music has made all the wait worthwhile.
nice review tushar.
Considering the story line and time….music symphony are absolute mismatch…But the songs are good neway not grt rehman had much better in past and yes i expected some wonderus thumri and bhajan….Shende copies shreya and miserable but song is the best in the album….
Wait for AR s next…
two tracks r simplu superb…azeem-o-shah shenshah and khawja mere khawaja…other three are very thanda. looks like hrithink-ash’s thanda chemistry has passed on to music also. the bhajan sounds liek something that i hav heard before. cant remember. but nice review Tushi!!
Subrata,
Can you expand on the.. “mysic symphony are absolute mismatch” - bit? See, I am not fully aware of the music of that era.
i think, Bhajan is the worst song of the album. they’ve got it all wrong even the language of the lyrics..
Thanks for the comments guys.
Vivek, what
Tushar,a wholesome review!
Have always appreciated your music reviews. So far, have only heard the ‘jashan-e-bahar’ song on FM.Will buy the album tomorrow. And will refer to your post for a better understanding of these compositions from Rehman.
hmmmn…still listening. Javed Akhtar disappoints big time.
Man mohana is nice. I just feel that it’s too long.
‘Jashn-E-Bahaara’ failed to have that ‘ghame mein khushi’ wala effect on me. No comparisons with ‘Ae Ajnabi’ please!
more later.
@HG
What’s wrong with the language? You mean a Rajpoot woman singing in plain Hindi with little bhojpuri touch in some lines?
vgood review. It is great to have people with such music knowledge on PFC. I think music has a big role to play in period films. Also the background score.
Nice Review Tushar! “
ar rahman has the most no of blind fans .. his songs in Guru sucked and still some poll (guess cnn-ibn) gave it the best album award !
coming to J-A , marhaba is good but a couple other songs shown on tv sound too contemporary and a touch filmy (melody-wise and vocals).. as somene suggested, the soundtrack cud have done with more tradional raga style music.
sound-mixing techniques are sophisticared nowadays but the drawback is that it renders an artifiality to the song (coupled with exess instrumentation) .. whereas in the old songs one could feel the immediacy of the singer’s voice .
ok rant over :)
@ filmibhai hehhee, U are funny! Guru, ppl forgot too easily the music, but why why why?? hehe enough ranting! But still Rehman’s music is fantastic, it has a soothing effect dear!
Neeraja, what i meant was that, the bhajan is sort of Mirabai-esque and Jodhabai was not like that, i think. and it could have been written in more brij bhasa. if they wanted some authentic feel to the song then they should have done in a Hindustani Classical or Haveli Sangeet way.. I don’t like that violin sort of bit in the song or the singer.. Anuradha would have been a better choice.
FilmiBhai (& Subrata)
The songs will be used as background score - none of the songs are sung in the Darbar/Haveli/Court, so it does not need to be in Hindustani Classical format. And none of the songs sound like of today’s era. Also, he has used minimal musical instruments and kinda sounds like the instruments of Akbar’s era. No? What more did you guys wanted?
Secondly, a bit about Khawjaji (Moinuddin Chishty)… Jalladuin Akbar was a big fan of him, so it is a good coincidence that they have “Khawja Mere Khawja” song in the film.
Anyone know more about the song?
@ Tushar, what an informative review. Music reviews should be like this. Thanks.
A.R. Rehman has given us a new year gift.A gift which touched the soul. Can’t say anything about the film but musically its bagging all the awards.
Thanks a lot to Rehmanji for providing us such gifts from time to time.
Thanks Arun, Rasik.
Neeraja, ab thoda samay bhi dijiye. every song needs a personal memory to attach itself to us. abhi to do din hue hain. after listening to the music all night yest, it was a completely diff experience today when I was improvising along with the music, completely diff shades. will wait to hear more from you. hopefully positive.
Thanks Sheen, frankly I didn
great music i just loved it
To me, whatever of the music I have heard on my car stereo, it doesn’t take me to that era. Maybe in a cinema hall one could feel that on a very loud volume. However, I miss the Kamal Amrohi touch in it. Royal grandeur seems to be missing. May be to understand the soul in the music, the way, the author has tried to explain, you need to believe that Jodha & Akbar ever made a romantic pair.
A very well written music review Tushar. Really enjoyed reading it.
Love the lyrics on ‘Kehne ko Jashn-e-bahara…’
Awesome stuff, Tushar- keep it coming!
Nice review …
Post Mortem is even a less worthy word to describe this review …
Nice and acute observations …
Jashn-e-Bahara is excellent so is Marhabaa ..
Rest of the songs … abhi to theek thaak se lag rahe hai ..
But u know …
Rehmaan’s music takes time to engage …(atleast me ..)
Avi, ‘autopsy’ is a better word. :)
Thanks Jahan, D&C.
Gajendra, “It’s not the age, its the mileage”. :)
awesome album. Rahman at his best. I mean the no of instruments used just awesome.
this album wont be a big hit among the masses, but for true rahman fans this ones a treat they should not miss.:)>-
allll r gud songs
Nice review man. Here is my review.
http://bloggingultimatum.blogspot.com/2008/01/jodha-akbar-music-review.html
With Lagaan and Swades to their credit, Ashutosh Gowrikar and A.R.Rahman unite for Jodha Akbar. I am not a big fan of Ashutosh or Hrithik or Aishwarya but I know what to expect musically with A.R.R scoring the music. Typically my expectations are high with Rahman’s movies and satisfaction is much higher. With no further ado, I want to review the music:
* Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah: We have heard this in the movie trailers and promos. This song glorifies Akbar to the zenith. The song has a terrific start with trumpets, battle drums with chorus vocals. Has A.R.Rahman’s stamp right from the beginning. A very good mix of classical music, battle drums, tabla, and bass make it an extremely catchy song right from the first listening. The part where you hear the lady vocals or “chan chana chana” is brilliant. This song takes you right back to the Mughal era with the right music and lyrics. This song can be termed as a royal song, a song meant for a majestic and victorious monarch. I love this song, this is my favorite ! Instant chart buster ! Wikipedia says that it was sung by Mohammed Aslam and Bonny Chakravarti. Relatively new singers I suppose but they have done a great job !
* Jashn-E-Bahaara: This is yet another song we have seen in the trailers. Sung by Javed Ali, this is a very soothing romantic number. His voice reminded me of Kamaal Khan who typicalls sings for Salman Khan. This song gives a very fresh feeling. The lyrics are very captivating, very pure Hindi with few urdu words. From the mood and lyrics of the song, it looks like a background song picturised on Hrithik and Aishwarya Rai. I love the part where he sings “Saare sahme nazaarein hain …”, Rahman takes the melody to the peak ! And actually from the song and lyrics, you can feel the eternal love … pure and fresh. Very rich in melody and a Superb song !
* In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein: Sung by Sonu Nigam and one of A.R.Rahman’s favorite Madhushree, it is a slow moving song with melancholy. Sonu and the chorus singers dominate this song with occasional orchestra now and then. This song in my opinion is an attempt to mix contemporary and historical music. The outcome is a success. This song is one of a kind which definitely requires repeated listening. If you don’t find this song catchy at first, keep listening and you’d love it.
* Khwaja Mere Khwaja: Here comes the song I was waiting for. A qawwali sung by ARR himself, what more can you ask for ? Knowing his choosy selection of the songs he renders, I had super high expectations from this song as well. I can visualize this song rendered in front of Akbar during/after battle. This song is very slow paced and still qualifies to be called a qawwali. Rahman renders the song and also the chorus/background vocals. In addition to that, the song has a beautiful melody. Only ARR can make these kind of songs hummable. Brilliant composition !
* Mann Mohana: I had zero expectations from this song rendered by Bela Shende. Her voice resemebles Shreya Ghosal and might match Aiyshwarya rai on screen. This is the least favorite of my songs in this album. Seems like a situational song about temporary separation of lovers. Wasn’t too excited by this song. Maybe this is one of those songs that needs repeated listening.
* Jashn-E-Bahaara (Instrumental): In most of the movies, instrumentals are introduced to increase the length on the audio tapes or CDs. For movies where music is scored by A.R.Rahman, instrumentals are a treat and Jashn-E-Bahaara instrumental is yet another proof. An excellent flute instrumental fused with some light background beats. It is very soulful. Do not miss it !
* Khwaja Mere Khwaja (Instrumental): How do you compose instrumentals for a song like Khwaja Mere Khwaja ? Only ARR can do that. The beauty of this instrumental is you can’t guess what the original song sounds like from the instrumental. The song and the instrumental are so different. Oboe dominates the instrumental and it is a master piece.
I love this album. It’s a musical treat for one and all. I am positive both the “masses” and “critics” will love this album. I’ve loved most of ARR’s work and some of them after repeated hearing. But with Jodha Akbar, it was appreciated at first listening. I totally recommend listening to all songs in this album. It’s a sure shot chart-buster.
I dont know why…but whenever A.R.Rahman’s album is hailed as “great”..I feel proud…as if you people are congratulating my work…
It started from the “Kadhalan”, “Rangeela” days…
Apart from ARR, Sachin and Mani Ratnam make me feel like that….
I am too damn proud that A.R.Rahman lives just 6 kms from my home…

Tushi…on second thoughts…u liked all the songs ?? hmmmm…thats blind fan following then. also,i m not aware but the big question is does the sound belong to that era ? the instruments sounds/the orchestration…or the only criteria is to have good sound.like it happened with mangal pandey. rahman was criticised heavly for some songs there. when we talk about film’s authentic look n evrything else then even the sound should justify it. if anyone can throw light on this.
Kehne ko Jashn-e-bahaara hai- (ironically) loooks as if theres some celebration
Ishq yeh dekh ke hairaan hai- my love is astonished witnessing it
Phool se khushboo khafa khafa hai gulshan mein - the fragnance is upset with the flower in the garden
Chhupa hai koi ranj fiza ki chilman mein- but the sorrow is hidden in the curtain (chilman) of atmosphere (fiza)
Saare sehmein nazaare hain - all the sceneries are dull
Soye soye waqt ke dhaare hain - the thread of time is also fast asleep
Aur dil mein khoyi khoyi si baatein hain - and my heart has some lost words (to express)
Kaise kahein kya hai sitam - how should I say whts troubling me
Sochte hain ab yeh hum - I am thinking of it right now
Koi kaise kahein woh hain ya nahi hamaare - now how would one decide if shes mine or not
Karte to hain saath safar - though we travel together
Faasle hain phir bhi magar- theres some distance (between us)
Jaise milte nahi kisi dariya ke do kinaare - (same way) how 2 shores of two rivers would never meet.
Pass hain phir bhi paas nahi - close but still far

nice review tushar..refreshing…
well here’s a link to HOW to NOT WRITE A MUSIC REVIEW
http://www.indiafm.com/movies/musicreview/12618/index.html
@Tushar
I have been listening. Kaafi baar suna, but sorry, it fails to impress :(
‘Azeem-o-shaan Shehanshah’ is the worst track. What are they singing? Why do they keep saying ‘Marhaba’? Complete lack of imagination in lyrics. But I guess with all the grandeur on the screen, it won’t sound that bad in the movie.
‘In lamhon’ is decent. I didn’t like Madhushree’s part. Singing, tune, lyrics everything in that part is very ordinary. Except that part, song is good. I really liked the chorus part.
‘Jashn-e-Baharaa’ ummmn…nah! no feeling! as Phoenixnu said very cold track.
‘Khwaja mere Khawaja’ is also fine especially the lines ‘khwaja mere khwaja dil mein sama ja…’ are really nice. The song is good but not as good as ‘Piya Haaji Ali’.
‘Mann Mohana’: Good song. Though why does it end in such a weird way? I think it should have gone back to ‘chhod ke apni Kaashi Mathura…’ in the end, that’s the best part of the song.
Last few lines starting from ‘main hun tumhari…’ are pathetic.
I also think this will play in installments.
Overall I am disappointed. I’ll probably play some of the songs for few days, weeks but this one is not going to stay with me the way ‘Ae Ajnabi’, ‘ye Haseen Vadiyaan’ and a lot of other Rehman compositions stayed.
Having said all that, I think your review is very good. Really liked what you wrote about how you think the song will look on-screen.
@HG
Yeah you are right about the language of the song. I still like the first half of the song. Try listening to it without thinking of it as a song of Jodha-Akbar.
I agree with Subrata, a thumri would have been nice :)
Thanks for the info on Khwajaji.
We have a habit of expecting a 100 from Tendulkar always what-so-ever :)
Having said that… J-A songs..not all are good, not all are long lasting. I liked “Azeem-O-Sehanshah”…I felt that they were short on right words and used “Chan chanana…” in every para, but overall outcome is good on this song.
Next I liked “In-Lamho” - Sonu’s voice does a magic on any song as usual, Javed Ali’s “Jashne bahara” is also good, rest I didn’t liked :) being honest.
On a different note (not related to this post at all)…
Anyone thought about this movie, story etc…why Ashutosh-G chose this name??, to my knowledge with a liitle reasearch done there is even a doubt on having Akbar’s third wife named as ‘Jodha’, why elaborate on Jodha-akbar then, also when Akbar did married to many other pricess later with the same reasion of having good alliance with then powerful Indian kings/kingdoms
PFC authors … anyone..writing on these lines :) Not a fight, just a thought on movie’s fate and its effect on viewers specially in our country where one scene one dialogue becomes a controversy.
@PS
I will tell you why AG chose this name, this story. Because We Indians love ‘love stories’. We either do not have emotions other than happiness in love and dard-e-mohabbat (pain in love) etc. or that’s what our directors think! That’s why you have Jodha-Akbar, Guru, Asoka and some stalled/canceled projects like Baajiraav-Mastani, Prithviraj-Samyukta etc.

And yeah I also read about the name related controversy courtesy wiki and some external link it had but I guess, your research would have included that.
I have only heard what is in the trailers, since I don’t have access to the CD here in Honolulu. But what I have heard is very very ordinary, both in terms of lyrics and music.
Without even looking at the credits, I could guess that the lyrics were by Javed Akhtar - God knows what is wrong with him! He never was a Kaifi Azmi or Gulzar, but with Don (remember,”…..bahut hi khatarnaak hoon main….”), he hit rock bottom. I thought he’d improve with Jodhaa Akbar, especially since it is a Mughal Historical and he would have ample opportunities to come up with some decent ’shaayari’. But no! He comes up with lyrics more suited to Himesh Reshammiya than Akbar!
And Rehman!!!! I am sure this is the biggest disappointment from him so far… I expected to hear some antique sounding tunes. But the music doesn’t sound like it belongs to the era of Jodhaa and Akbar!
As I have mentioned earlier, I have only heard the songs in the trailers. So, I am willing to give the lyricist and the music director another chance, but I am not too hopeful….
@Debashri
Honolulu ??? For real ??? NICE
Man us bongs go anywhere don’t we. :d
Thanks Neeraja,
Apart from very few directors all are working for their satisfaction. They want to touch an area that they haven’t worked on. So given a chance, and producer’s money they try to work on that subject, but that new/different for him is not new/diff for us viewer. That’s true for new actor/actress too, they keep repeating ‘my role is very different, this movie is different’ but actually…nothing for us.
But AG I thought is an intelligent man, he came up with Baazi (average) and then Lagaan and Swadesh with punch of real different. So may be he wanted to touch a love story subject, and differently - but why Jodha-Akbar, why he used ‘Jodha’ in the title knowingly - to get publicity via controversy??
Akbar was gr8, no argument but his love story wasn’t ( :) my opinion) and there was no one named ‘Jodha’ - none of the history books state that or give enough proof. So the question is why AG put his money and effort on this story?
@Debashri
Sorry for encouraging piracy :d

f-ing hell. I need to stop coming here. I’m now convinced that the majority of contributors here are presumptuous phonies that think bringing something else down makes them appear to have grown a brain, or a penis.
I LOVED the J-A soundtrack. And now I have no desire to explain why.
PS, don’t even get me started on your //Akbar was gr8, no argument but his love story wasn
ps: tushar, great review!
Dear Cinemaisdead, please control your emotion on a premise expressed here. Some of the regulars on PFC know inside stories of most of what happens or takes to make a movie or what was inspired to be done and what became the outcome. Just like how you must be feeling when you know better. So please relax on the generalized tirade.
Every piece of work is accepted/appreciated by some and disliked/criticized by some based on what they know or feel about it. You like J-A soundtrack, write about it, get your word out and let others know why it is good. Calling those who disagree phonies is just not done…
Cheers mate!
@Editor/OZ
My bad… sorry again :) and thanks
cinemaisdead, I understand your frustration with some of the folks on this forum. There are some who come off as phony intellectuals. For someone to say that Ashutosh has made up the character of Jodhaa after he did years of research with respected historians is the height of ridiculousness. Plus how can someone judge a soundtrack without listening to it? Everyone is entitled to an opinion but please try to be fair and objective when passing judgment on someone else
@CinemaIsDead
With due respect to your paper work done - read this:

Even if it is not historically accurate, what’s wrong with making this film. Afterall, Nandlal Jaswantlal and K Asif did not exactly dig into history books when they made Anarkali and Mughal-e-Azam. As long as Ashotosh Gowarikar doesn’t claim that his film is historically accurate, it’s fine to present a fictional (or partially true) tale in a historical background.
Agree with you Aditya.
A much hyped album from AR Rahman as always.Unlike his previous efforts this disappoints big time. But since this is a big film there will be lot of marketing gimmick to make sure that this album is no.1 on charts.I am quite surprised that even Joginder Tuteja(INDIAFM) have given only a 2 star review for this album who is an ardent AR Rahman ass licker who gave 4 stars for a mediocre album like GURU which has atrocious songs like Ek Lo Mufth,Mayya,Bazi Laga which rivals even Himesh songs
Tushar
theres noting wrong with aspiring to be the best..it was just an observation
i love the oscars because i get to know of some good films thanks to them, but i personally feel that in the oscars the best man doesent win..
anyways i love some of the songs…theyre quite nice.
sharath, how can someone say “Mayya” as atrocious song….Please listen once more, and you would know why i say so. Remember guru had other gems like “Ay Hairathe” and “Barso re”…. Of course producing a full album with soulful songs, and pleasing the very vast varied music taste of indian population is tough. Jodha akbar has amazing songs and builds up great excitement for the movie…. The movie clips do look quite decent.
BTW Tushar great review :)>-……….Great effort in translating the urdu words. The urdu words are so poetic, its hard to find english equivalents….
@Aditya
Totally agree with you.
@Sharath
Good to know that there are other people who think music of Guru is overrated.
@Tushar
While I maintain my stand on other songs of JA, I now think that khwaja mere khwaja is quite good. Only Rehman can give us songs like that.
problem is that we dont have any classical music maestros around anymore … most of the music directors are content fiddling around with disco beats . so it comes down to rahman. ismail darbar wudnt have been a bad choice but then i guess having rahman ensures a ‘hit’ album irrespective of its quality.
Ohno, after listening more and repeatedly, I am not taht much into the songs and music, what happened to Rehman, I am still prefering his older albums and anyday I will listen and go for Metro’s music, songs, and “Anwars” “Tose naina lage re” and Maula.
Khwaja is alright.
This time JA’s songs arn’t haunting or mindblowing. its just my opinion, pls dont be harsh on me.
There is NO one to compete with A R Rehman when it comes to composing for the period films…
the album is awesome !!!
*-:) The more you listen the more you like…
presntly listening continously, dont know when it was playing the same album continuesly…
if u listen continously to any type of music u start
to like it.Rahman due to some of his songs and excellant publicity by media has become a big name.So in ur mind u are predisposed to listen to his songs continously even if the songs may not be great. It is the same way people go and watch a Shahrukh or Amir film, films quality may not be great
but still people watch them.Rahman is in same stage.Even if he creates crap people think it as diamond.
@hemantsingh I do not know about ur musical preference but I listened to Mayya many times and more I listen more disgusting it is for me.Just I want to compare this with Vishal’s BEEDI from Omkara
and Mayya simply sucks.less said about ek lo mufth and Baazi Laga.Barso re may be a novelty for u but it is a simple rehash of Rahman’s previous Tamil Songs.I agree that Hai Hairethe is a good song.In fact I feel that RDB is also very much overrated.Only good song in that album I feel is “Roobaru”
Thanks again for the comments, guys.
I agree I tend to be biased towards Rahman. If any other music composer gives me the same quality, I will happily embrace that music as well.
A word on how a score varies on listening index.
Some albums are film-independent. They really don
According to me instances of bad quality Rahman scores
all songs in GURU except Hai Hairethe
all songs in RDB except Roobaru
all songs in Rangeela except Tanha Tanha
all songs in Daud except O Bhavere
Dilse-This is one album where all songs are of good quality eventhough chayya chayya is little overrated
all songs in Mangal Pandey,Fire,Meenaxi,Bose,Taal,Yuva,Jodha Akbar
all songs in Takshak except Rang De
swades-songs of average quality
Lagaan-songs of average quality
For a music director who does only one or two albums a year,Rahman’s quality is not that great in spite of having sufficient time and big budgets
at disposal.
hey tushar i’ve experienced Sachin in Wankhede…have u really??? or were u just trying to explain ur feelings about the songs…
@Tushar, Sharath
I think that RDB songs are brilliant but a lot of credit goes to Prasoon Joshi for penning down the lyrics most suited for the movie.
I wouldn’t say RDB is a film-independent album.
Same is true for Rangeela.
Among the rest I would rate Guru, Lagaan, JA, Yuva, Takshak as average as albums (they have some good songs) while Swades, Mangal Pandey, Fire, Meenaxi, Daud, Bose stand below average.
Sharath, you don’t like ‘boondon se baatein..’ from Takshak?
Alka yagnik ji also recorded 2 songs for JA..But now its not ther..what rubbish… i am really upset… y madhushree dont know
ALka is better for this types of music,,
Dear I really mis alka yagnik vocals yaar…
@tushar- excellent review - hats off…. u really brought out the kindaa feel i have…..(esp: comparision wit sachins’ brilliance)
@sharath and few anti-rahman members –
If lampooning rahman is what u aimed, then gimme a music director, presently, who gives a better music than him… These are few reeks of hypocrisy… idiocracy has run amuck all over the places in the form of logical simplifications..
“all songs in RDB except Roobaru”– WTF ????.. are we intended to throw our opinions in some kind of “fascist fervor”?????
Why do people recogonize him as “the best music director of the year” award… Do people masquerade as hypocrites??? ….
here hoes my version of review…
azeem-o-shaan- Well, starts off with trumpets and few horns throwing around…. and proceeds into a “Battle field” kindaa atmo— so majestic..so worth it…….Sivamani yet again proves that he’s the best drummer arnd…..
Jash-e-baharaa- Here’s an another contender for the “song of the year”…Very much light in the ears.. melody to the core… sooothing voice from Javed Ali…Infact, the intrumental version of this one is piognant at its best( these kindaa songs and instrumentals are of the best kind…)Name a music director in india who gives u good instrumentals ??? U think f-kin Himesh wud reproduce that?? ..if u still want to throw ur hips arnd and dance “DARD-E-DISCO”, in an ancient flick, there are few lame music directors in bollywood who would do that….
kwaja mere– This song reallly takes the breath away. This is an original version of qawwali song…And the way, rahman has sung, Eminently applaudable. Refer to the ancient version of qawwwali song (esp- frm hyderabad to praise a king), u wud know y this song is special…
In lamho- i dont have words to describe this song. @neeraja, heard u saying ” I didn
dear vinoth
I am not against Rahman, but I do not consider him the genius as is being made out to be.Lot of it is simply media hype. There are good music given by other music directors which are not appreciated just like that of Vishal Bharadwaj.Just like Rahman he has also worked in only few films but has given quality music even better than Rahman. But unfortunately
he has worked in only small films and most of his films were flops.Mithoon has done good work till now.Pritham has also good music to his credit like
metro.Even Annu Malik has done good work in umrao jaan. There are others who do equally or better work but they are judged based only on their bad output which may be due to commitment to producers
and other commercial considerations.I am not bothered whether Rahman is a humanitarian or patriotic or a good samaritan.I am only interested in music and i don’t care about the personal life of music director or is it a way of saying that since annu Malik,Himesh,Mithon do not have patriotic albums to their credit so they are unpatriotic and
lacks humanitarian touch?
Sharath,
i have said this before to you.. but you keep repeating same shite whenever A R Rahman’s name is mentioned on PFC.
You do not like his music then, fair enough, but your views are so skewed and shallow. You are comparing A R Rahman’s music with Pritham and Mithoon?!
Mithoon has given good music? He has given same sort of music in all of the films he has done so far! He is very repetitive. Only a couple of good songs by him. Tere Bin and Maula are only a couple of good songs from him.
Prtham a good music director?! More than half of the songs he has composed are copied - he is a lifter!
Anu Malik is a bit decent when he does original stuff.
Vishal Bhardwaja is a good music director. No one is disregarding him. He has got the credit for his music.. critically and audience have loved his music. Be it Paanch or Omkara. Wasn’t Beedi a hit hit song?!
ps stop being a keeda.
@Vinoth
I like Rehman’s music in general but sometimes I don’t like the female parts in his songs. Some examples:
Madhushree in JA (In lamhon), Chitra is Rang de basanti (singing dheemi aanch pe tu zara ishq chadha), Alka Yagnik in Taal (…hay meri laaj ne mujhko dubo diya, aisi lagi jhadi sochun main ye khadi…)
It is interesting that you find madhushree’s part the best part of the song!:)
It takes time before a music director can be judged. The number of films he scores music for, the variety he gives and also the period for which he continues to maintain the quality.
Going by the above standards there is no way can anybody compare Rahman to mithoon/pritham. Rahman has proved his metal in past two decades. so many music directors came and gone but Rahman has stayed. Just to live for the expectations for so many years is a gr8 achivement in itself.
Regarding the good songs RDB-only roobaroo. I am shocked to hear this. the whole janta liked lukka chuppi, tu bin bataye, khalbali… what a master pieces thay have been.
So probably few people r an exception to these songs.
Pl dont compare any of the new music directors to rahman - not bcoz their music was not good but wait for the time and variety which is yet to come..
I feel that Pritham is as much or more talented than
Rahman and I stand by it.I do not know how many movies Pritham has done till now but it may be equal to entire number of movies Rahman has done till now.Pritham is doing so many films at a time that quality is bound to get affected.Still he produces masterpieces like metro and ankahee.Rahman does only
an album or two a year for big budget films and still struggles to make good music. This is the point which I was trying to make.
@hoonhar Goonda try to understand that and do not become a blind Rahman fan to such an extend that
u cannot see his flaws.Only Pritham’s bad music is highlighted not his good ones.Mithoon repetitive?..is maula similar to tere bin?..in fact Rahman is more repetitive than any other music director basically all his tunes are similar
only difference is that there is lot of orchestrational wizardy which was a novelty when he first came into picture. Now it is no longer a novelty and that is precise reason why i do not like his recent compositions but hardcore Rahman fans still cling on to it eventhough world has changed and even an amatuer musician can create that type of music. There are some psuedointellectuals out there who think that being AR Rahman fan is a yardstick of intelligence.A case in point I know of many guys who bought CD of Guru bacause of Rahman-ManiRatnam tag but hardly listens to it same way some one buys a vikram Seth
book to show how intelligent he is but do not read it.That is the case with most of so called Rahman fans just superficial like his music
Pritham is talented than A R Rahman? How?! Is he very talented at copying songs? Was Life in Metro.. original? Life is Metro.. is a masterpiece? WTF? In what regards?! How to copy international or pakistani tunes and flogged it as your own tunes?
Mithoon has given quality music? No. He has not. Not yet. Only a few songs. None of his soundtracks are ‘masterpiece’. What is a masterpiece soundtrack? What do you see in those albums that you do not find in A R Rahman’s soundtrack?
A R Rahman has a reputation cos he has given quality music before in past. He has made his name in the world because of his quality and original work.
You are still being very skewed and shallow in your views. What is good music? What is a masterpiece soundtrack? How the hell a mthoon’s soundtrack is masterpiece when he barely comes up with a quality soundtrack? How the hell a pritham soundtrack is masterpiece when he never comes up with original work? Give us a lesson on music. Don’t throw silly names around or same shite around.
@sharath, let’s put an end to this. I mean enough is enough. HG has already explained this to you in all the possibility, but you wouldn’t listen. You want to prove a point, write in an article to Project I-view. We, the lesser informed, would love to learn a thing or two about what good music is, from you.
And if you want to be in the heat of argument to gain eyeballs, please spare Rahman. He is beyond such discussions. As far as I am concerned he might have hung his boots after Dil Se, and I would still call him one of the world’s greatest composers. And if you really want to analyse music on what’s good and what’s not, bring it on.And please spare a thought and listen up to some one worth comparing the man to. Please don’t belittle our sensibilities by quoting the same names over and again.
When I write a post, I love to see a constructive discussion happening, with more and more people contributing to the knowledge that we do/do not possess individually. But after your intervention, this has sadly become a Rahman bashing place. Could we please move on, if you have anything else to say?
Thanks.
@Sharath
Dude what are you talking about? Pritam and Mithoon? Ok, there is no point repeating HG’s questions again! but who buys Vikram Seth to appear intelligent? :O
lol, that cracked me up! Vikram Seth would love to hear that, at least he is getting in a bestseller list everytime, some way or the other :d
@Tusharji what type of constructive discussion u are talking about?A contructive discussion in which some one says that each and every song created by Rahman
is sheer genius and one should support it?A constructive discusion is something in which differing view points are taken into consideration
rather that becoming emotional and blind. If u read my posts
carefully I have highlighted some of weak scores of
Rahman which even critics have acknowledged like Bose,Meenaxi,Mangal Pandey etc.Again I am repeating
some one who does only one or two albums in an year
the proportion of weak music in Rahman’s armoury is high.Instead of becoming agitated and angry because some one criticizes Rahman, try to understand what he is trying to say with a cool mind.Is ek lo Mufth from Guru a greater composition than Pritam’s Alvida from Metro?or Mithoon’s Maula?Pritham and Mithoon are great music directors with their share of bad output which I have already stated.I am not claiming that
they are geniuses and trying to dethrone the so called only genius out here
Joginder Tuteja has given only a 2star rating for Jodha Akbar. He is a paid music critic and I assume that he knows something about music .My knowledge is limited and I know no one cares about my view that Jodha Akbar music overall is a weak one. What hardcore Rahman fans out there would like to say about this?..
Sharath,
I like music of metro and ankahee but sorry to say even those are “Inspired” music.. Sidhe bole to Lift kiya hua hai.
will write more later
Sharath.
I agree with you partially that yea Rehman is not as great as ppl have made him to be..sidhe Bole to over rated hai.. Jodha Akbar is not my kind of music so no comments on that..But I personally still feel that there is something only rehman can do..When it comes to beat and rhythm no can beat rehman..his Airtel composition i feel is the best till date and i really like some of his work . eg RDB
i also agree with HG on Pritam..
Pritam is a good composer and i know its not easy to lift music also :D .. Copy karna bhi ek kala hai..some of his work is really Good but bottomline remains ki yea Music Udaya hai..and Yes i Still like his Music :D .. Hindi mai rehta haina.. Garib kaha kaha se leke aata hai.. :)
Pritam’s Dhoom Machale, Metro, Naqab,Jab we met, Bhool Bhulaiya, Woh Lamhe, Speed, Bhagam Bhag, Raqeeb, Apna Sapna Money Money, Ankahee, Bas ek Pal, Gangster, Chocolate Puff Puff mai thak gaya.. sab “Inspired” hai..
But now even iam confused as to how do you define great musician kyonki thoda bahut to sabhi ” Inspired” hai including A R Rehman and all other musicians including the ones from yester years O P NAYYAR to SD Burman, RD Burman to Jatin Lalit to Nadeem Sharvan.. Sabhi nai thoda bahut udaya hi hai.. so who really is a great musician
1. One who’s completely original irrespective of the quality of work which may include good and bad both.
2. One who’s inspired but has good music to his credit..
Everyone Please comment..

ur too good man hats off to you. ^:)^^:)^
u have an AMAZING sense of humour.
first of all you try to show how bad rehman is by comparing him to pritam and mithun. the way u were lauding them made me think u were talking of Bethoveen and mozart!!
secondly, as if to prove that the above statement was not a fluke u top it by saying that one buys “a vikram Seth book to show how intelligent he is but do not read it.”
This has to be the mother of all funny statements. i have decided to save ur post and keep it. in future whenever ill feel sad ill just read the post and become happy again.
pl dont stop writing and continue to regale us with ur amazing knowledge of music and fiction. if u want to include more items in ur discussion ur more than welcome.
keenly awaiting ur next comment..
Personal Opinion:
Honestly speaking when it comes to rehman even he has to prove his mettle.. He has hardly composed music for few movies in hindi ( agreed some had good variations) but some of his compositions are repetitive..
Just as an example..the beat rhythm of thilana thilana and last para of Mukabla is pretty much the same..Which in turn has been ‘inspired’ by the African tribal music.
Again i like some of his work but i think he still has lot of music to give.. He has only evolved with time and i guess the best of him is yet to come..
music abhi baki hai dost..
@syedji I do not know why u are bringing poor Bappi Lahiri here?..If u are a hardcore ARRahman fan please tell me who sang the song Ek Lo Mufth?.In fact Bappi Lahiri had earlier given some melodious music which were not appreciated.Speaking about RD Burman I am a hardcore RD Burman fan but i accept the fact he also has to his credit many poor and copied compositions and his musical quality was in decline during late 80s and early 90s.But If there is someone who comes remotely close to the title of genius it would be RD Burman.
@Sudhir Nair I accept that my Vikram Seth book comment was a silly one.But the point which I was trying to make is quite simple.I had a friend who was a diehard fan Of Rahman. When music of Daud came
out we listened to it and I wasn’t impressed barring O Bhawre song.Rest of songs were snail paced.I could see that my friend was also not impressed, but since being a hardcore Rahman fan he cannot say anything bad about his music so he turned
plates and started saying that this type of music only a few can understand. This is what I meant by psuedointellectual. Later on I have come across many Rahman fans like this.
Usual excuses of Rahman fans to justify his bad compositions
1)u are not intelligent enough to understand it
2)listen to it many times u will like it
3)Rahman do not follow usual Raaga used by other music directors,he uses complex raagas
Sharath,
You said Pritam’s metro is a great work coz you thought they are original..
In Dino and Baatein kuch ankahee si are lifted ..what do you have to say abt pritam now.
If anybody accuses anybody else of “lifting” then the reference should also be provided. Ok, Pritam lifted so-and-so track…but from where ?
I neither have the time nor any inclination to do this, but please check out this site if you want to really complete your song plagiarism research.

Tushar question for you Rehman ne bhi to udaya hai and you said you like rehman coz he is original.. whats your view after checking that site.. agreed that rehman doesnt lift tunes directly except for 1 that i cud find out..but he mixes the beat and rhythm and generally mixes 2 songs..

Good analysis, Alone. Glad to know that you had some good findings there. However, like I said before, I am not interested in spending time in searching all that stuff out, I would rather do something else that interests me. and if I answer all the questions that are being bounced off here as if I am some authority on music, I would be wasting my time and yours. you are free to read the article again if that helps. I thought I had tried to do my best to give some space to analysing a piece of music, but sadly it has taken a dirty tangent. I am not here to judge any music director. there is a world out there dude, why get stuck with petty circles that do not take one anywhere except deeper in its girth. and pray I am not gonna marry Rahman neither is he related to me, that I will take hurt if someone says he lifts songs. I could care less.
peace.

Thanks to Monica for that link.
You’re welcome. :)
Tushar my response was not to your review but to the discussion you had with sharath..
Dude, i guess its ok if the discussion moves from one topic to another.. That helps us to know lot of stuff from each other.. Nobody is questioning your review sir and as lot of ppl stated its beautifully written..Chill Yaar
And personally i have a different view altogether about music and musicians.. being a musician itself is a big thing and i appreciate all kind of music.. i guess for the nth time iam saying that i like all kind of music including pritam’s music inspite of the fact that the some of the tunes are lifted but i knw i got exposure to that music only coz of him..Also he has only refined some of them to make it better..Likewise iam sure if rehman gets inspired by some music that will not affect and should not affect his stature atleast for his fans ..and i guess sometimes you like the work so much that you just feel like using it somewhere. ;)
I just wanted to know your views and so the same question was posed to sharath and you regarding pritam and rehman respectively.. Coz i noticed that the reason for defending them was very different..
Anyways thanks for your response Sharath and Tushar and yea Peace Always :)

Ye admi ekdum hira hai.
My reasons for liking only Roobaru from RDB.I am not an expert on music and dont know to speak in terms of raaga, mukhda etc. still i would like to present my analysis of Rahman’s music.Take for example song Rang De Basanti from RDB.I feel that just like any Rahman song it can be divided into parts and still each one will stand out.The song starts as an average tune and then it completely take a different turn, chorus is added, some excellant orchestration takes over.Nothing wrong with it.But if u ask any singer to sing this song without musical beats, then u will find how ordinary the song is.The point is in most of Rahman’s songs voice of singer and tune is not the most important factor,it is just part of overall output.May be I am old fashioned, but most important aspect of a song I believe is Singers voice and melody.Even if u cut out orchestration part also song should stand out. When Rahman first came into scene I was hooked to his music since it was entirely new and was not like usual film song structure. But problem with this is it sounds great
when u listen on headphones, but after a few years still would it appeal as it is now?.That is why I have so much appreciation for RD Burman. He also has done so much of experimentation, still his music’s primary emphasis was on melody and singers
voice.orchestration was just a part of music to enhance it rather than eclipse it.That is why after so many years of his demise his songs are still remembered.Right now Rahman’s songs are appealing but after 20 years, orchestrational changes will happen Rahman’s music will sound dated. The point is howmuchever u play with orchestrational stuff,if a song has to be remembered for ever it should have a perfect synchronization from beginning till end with emphasis on singers voice and melody. That is why I like Roobaru song because emphasis is more on singing and simple music rather than unnecessary rap music, shrieking etc in case of Paathshaala song.I feel that Rahman is an excellant music arranger rather than a music director and I think his airtel work is sheer genius.
pritam’s defintely giving better music than rahman these days .. his music is hummable and has a kick whch makes his sound somewhat pop-rock ..
he may have lifted a few tunes but its not that bad consdering i wudnt have listened to those original arabic/indoesian song ever .. and even if i had listened to them , i probably wudnt hve identified with them .. so i’d prefer listening to his songs than rahman’s ‘album of the year’ Guru/ other overhyped songs
@sharath
why compare mithoon to rahman -O .. the kid’s barely 3 albums old and aready sounds repetitive
@filmibhai
hey! sending the invite now, ok?
bhej diya!
thx :) theek ho gaya ?
crap ! :(
kya hua? not working?
nahi :/
why dont those donkeys fix the damn bug !! :o
Man i was so depressed after cheking this site …http://www.itwofs.com/ ..my heart sank when i read that QSQT’s songs are also copied …
seeing OP Nayyar’s name on that list broke my heart!!!! still doesnt make him a less better music composer!!!
I am a S/W guy and many a times to meet deadlines/schedules or just bcoz somebody else has done it b4, we google for code and copy it….dunno how I can justify that too….
‘That is why I have so much appreciation for RD Burman. He also has done so much of experimentation, still his music
relax buddies . even God copies . seen twins ? :)
so after glancing through the above crib threads… i hope ther’s no point in arguing….”critics to hell” whatsoever.. Especially few comparisions with mithooon and pritam….so sharath, u still owe the “tamil” song name , which u claim, is a pre-version of barso-re…Am sure u wud not be able to name it… U ll pppl shud understand this is pure act of “scandal mongering”….as far as sharath’s critics are concerned.
@neeraja- its true that i liked the madhushree’s part- The very ease of transition from a male voice(in its grandieur)..to the female voice— to say ” i fall for the voice “….The similar kindaaa transition can alsoo n found in “mein agar kahooon(OSO)…. it adds an “ice cream” touch…..
Whatsover the critics be,,,,
watch out for the rehman albums like
“ghazini”
“dillli 6″
@vinoth Regarding Barso Re i did noy say that it was
rehash of a particular Rahman song. What I meant was
Rahman has done similar songs in Tamil and as it is presented in Hindi. So for Hindi audience this song was a novelty, that may also be the reason why Hindi critics also liked the song. This song is also an example of Rahman’s repetitiveness when it comes to songs which have an element of Tamil folk songs. All most all songs in this genre have the same thannanna, jhanaana like tune.
some songs by other music directors which i feel measure up to Rahman’s music.Hope that they are original

I am a fan of strings which I also feel has given quality music till now
@anand Kadam .. i feel it is a melodious song..unfortunately there is no electronic music effects like that of Rahman.May be it is not best of Ravindra Jain. But this is the same music director who has given the evergreen songs of Chitchor and also introduced the melodious voice of Yesudas
oh man Strings !! their’s is the most soothing rock u’l hear .. wonderful melodious music n lovely lyrics to compliment .. im a huge fan
Excellent Music Composition by GURU A.R.Rehman !
Since everyone has a right to voice their opinion, I respect everyone’s comments.
From my end, I have been a fan of A.R.Rehman since Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Kandakondain Kandakondain, Bombay, Rangeela, Sapnay, so many…..so many songs….I just love them….it is so soothing….!!!
From A.J, I thought Khwaja mere Khwaja…..is just soothing…..!!

Hey Tushar!!!
Trust you to give such an in depth review!
But I love it!!
Shaabash mere Cheeteh!!!LOL…
I really love this album man!
Steve mere bhai! long time!
me too love the album, too bad I am saying it now, lol.
The mujic is oK but the firm is false. To date no one has proved that Akbar Realy married Jodha. Muslim People do not marry Kafir. This is an Imagination and false story.
There was no JOdha and Muslims are against the Rajput Autocrasy. It was a false imagination of some historing which got good publicity.
Can any one actually prove this?
This Is ture. There can be a female name JODHA but Akbar didnot mary a hindu woman and there was no wife of Akbar whose name was JODHA.
Mughal (Mangol) empire was a decent of CHANGEZ KHAN and they were strictly against marrying HINDU becouse hindu are KAFIR.
Even MISTRESS of AKBAR were not hindu.
No goood Musalman will marry a hindu girl.

True Akbar didnot have a hindu wife and none of his wife had name JODHA. The rajputs were present in his court because they lost battle against him and preferred to live as they were coward.
Akbar didnot marry Jodha or any other hindu woman. If any one doesnot belive it prove it with concrete facts. OK
oz, what happened to the troll filter??
this is fast turning out to be like some rediff comment thread…
wtf is happening to this site?
admin ppl..please block these comments …
Hey u all ‘akbar ke historians’….saale yaha pe music bi baat ho rahi hai……saala ‘jodha-akbar’ naam dekh ke hi chillane laga - pehle discusion padh be idiots :d
Chill guys, we will handle them if they drop in again, though it is least probable, as we have seen in the past.
I would suggest we don’t give this much heed and lead to an unnecessary argument. Comments will be trolled as and when the need be. As of now, I am neither related to Jodha not Akbar, that I take a personal offense. As for the other attacks, like I said, lets be a little discretionary.
Wow Tushar.. you’ve attracted quite a political debate here.
I love the breakdowns of the songs into English.. I’ve been trying to translate the songs into English.. but its quite difficult to perfect.
Great review.. gonna go see it tonight.. it launches here.. am well excited.
LOL @ As of now, I am neither related to Jodha not Akbar, that I take a personal offense - thats hilarious. =))
Thanks Amit. A little humour never hurts I guess. and you know quite well attracting political rhetoric was never the intention. :)One more day I guess before we see an onslaught of Jalaluddin Akbar ka bigul! Enjoy the show and do let us know about the film. I am sure you will.
No one ever does try to attract all the agro.. but sure don’t stop it does it?
Saw the film.. it is incredible. I don’t care how many people slate the film.. I thought it was really good and I enjoyed it until the last second.
Was totally pissed off that they cut Jashn-e-Baharaa into segments… so that really hurt.. coz I love that song and was really looking forward to watching the whole song.
Amitabh narrates the film in the start when the history and back-story is being told.. which was quite hard to follow.. but after that the film continues at a decent pace.
But thats just a single opinion. I think everyone should see it themselves and make up thier own minds.
songs = out standing
backround scorring = no body can do better than ar
film = no body has the guts to make expect this man

The Songs are excellent. Very marvellous and splendid. It has given a feeling of true loves inside the heart of the person who is watching the movie. Please dont miss this movie if not seen!!! I really love the movie a Lot!!!
Hi Tushar:
I just want to applaud you for your critique for JA and its musical score.
ARR’s music in Ashwarya Rai’s words “grows on you” meaning, it works like poison. Slowly intoxicating the listener with beautiful poetry, melodic voices and heart throbbing music.
As Tushar requested us; Give the music of JA some time to ripe and then you will reap the sweet fruits for a long long time.
How can I get the COMPLETE works of ARR? I don’t mean downloading, just to buy the whole works of him in CD format.
Thanks, Moonflower.
Regarding the complete works of ARR, well there are about 50 albums or so, so I don’t think you will get them in one pack or something. Also, it gets a lil tricky for someone like me, who has been collecting his music in all formats for last 15 years, to answer that. :) btw, his is the most easily available indian music I have seen wherever I have been. where do you stay?
I can help you out with sending a list of albums if you want.
Hi Tushar:
Thank you so much for answering my post. I live in Toronto, Canada. ARR’s albums are not easily available. I have checked the several Indian Bazars but they do not have the whole collection. I would like to have each and every music composition in every language. If you will be so kind to send me the list and how can I order them online. I dont want to buy the pirated copies, just the originals in any form; CD, cassettes, paid download etc.
thanks,
moonflower
