Jodha was Akbar’s (a)Wife (b)Daughter in Law (c)To be defined
RJK from Bombay sends in an urgent email this morning questioning if Jodha Akbar will be released on time. Because as Ashutosh Gowarikar gets ready to release his latest Jodha Akbar, its seems he’s made a serious blunder. Aishwarya Rai, who plays Jodha, the wife of Akbar, played by Hritik Roshan, has a grossly misleading, mistaken written role. You see Aish was supposed to be the daughter in law of Hritik Roshan but since Goawarikar and his team do not know history well, as do the millions of us, Sri Rajput Karni Sena has taken up to themselves to see that Aish is not called the wife of Hritik (in the movie), but his daughter in law (in the movie)
“We shall not allow the filmmaker to distort history,” said Lokendra Singh Kalvi, a leader of the outfit, at a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday.
According to him, none of Mughal emperor Akbar’s 34 wives were named Jodhabai. Akbar married the former maharaja of Ajmer, Bharmal’s elder daughter Karkbai alias Heer Kumar in Fatehpur Sikri on Feburary 6, 1562. Prince Salim was born in 1569.
“Jodhabai was the daughter of Moteraja Udai Singh and she would have been three years younger than Salim and hence, in no way could she have been his mother,” Kalvi claimed.
The organization claims that Jodha was the daughter of Udai Singh of Marwar and was married to Salim, Akbar’s son.
Interestingly another article on Rediff points to the fact that
Mughal emperor Akbar had three historians during his rule who recorded the history of their time — Abul Fazal wrote the Akbar Nama, Abdul Qadir Badayuni wrote the Mutakhabutawarikh and Nizamuddin Ahmed (also called Nizamuddin Bakshi) wrote the Tabqat-i-Akbari. None of them have mentioned ‘Jodhabhai’ in their books
Karni also claims that five historians have come up with well researched documents that prove the film historically incorrect. According to him
Ain-e-Akbari (page 619), Akbarnama (page 212) and a National Council of Educational Research and Training’s Class XI history book on medieval India by Professor Satish Chandra are amongst the books that were consulted by the experts… None of Akbar’s 34 wives were named Jodhabai. Akbar married the former maharaja of Amer, Bharmal’s elder daughter Karkbai alias Heer Kumar in Fatehpur Sikri on Feburary 6, 1562. Prince Salim was born in 1569. Jodhabai was the daughter of Moteraja Udai Singh and she would have been three years younger than Salim and hence, in no way could she have been his mother.
Then it goes back to Mughal-E-Azam, where Durga Khote should have played Prithviraj Kapoor’s daughter in law instead of his wife. Were there any marked protests then? Or are films and film stars an easy way to (in)fame these days?
The question hence remains what do you think should Aishwarya Rai really be to Hritik in the movie
(1) Wife
(2) Daughter in Law
(3) Or any other, which you can prove with ‘factual’ historical documents produced by 5 or more historians.

i think Rahman will come to gowariker’s help….time to sing..
khwaja mere khwaja….
rasta dikha ja….
jodha bai kaun thi….
humko bata jaaaa…
hmmm… to me it doesn’t mattter as long as ashu convinces me about everything that he has done cinematically which i enjoy and enjoy well… whether jodha was akbars wife, daughter or sister doesn’t really matter… but going by the popular stories am sure ashu would have taken the most authentic path… so can the moral police chill and leave the filmmakers alone???
Recently I heard that Bihari’s are the authentic residents of Mumbai… can anybody tell, is it true??? lol….
Ashutosh should insert a disclaimer in the promos and the movie that this is a work of fiction etc, etc.
If the movie gets a favourable response from viewers, this non-starter of a controversy will be forgotten.
the protests happenned even during the shoot of the film in rajasthan . ashutosh knew going in this fact , the movie is based more on legend of jodha akbar (tattoed on popular psyche by mughal-e-azam) rather than the actual history . the period details and akbar’s story will be authenthic and well researched but the “love story” will mostly be work of imagination . iam sure there will be a disclaimer to this effect at the start of the film
Shee-it! and I thought this was going to be the one good authentic, historical film coming out of India. I guess that is not to be the case….Why does Bollywood always have to romanticize, idealize and sugar coat everything till it has no semblance to actual events…
By my understanding, there were two Jodhabais. One who was Akbar’s wife and one who was Akbar’s daughter-in-law. I think the whole fiasco is a result of picking and choosing for convenience.
I’ll come back with more substance. I think I know where I can find a recorded reference to this.

you dont have to be so disappointed , akbar did marry the rajput princess (Hira something) on whom the “jodhaa” character is based on in this film , only her name was not jodha ! :)
all historical epics on screen do take some amount of cinematic liberties , jodhaa akbar is no exception .
Whether Akbar married Jodha or Salim married Jodha this marriage might have done to create better relations between Moghals and Rajputana but Ashutosh’s film Jodha Akbar has become bone of contention among people.
Why Ashutosh G, does not change her films title as Akbar Hira (sounds like Veera Zara):)
or Hira Akbar (it matches with Heer Ranjha tradition).
In dubbing its not a problem to replace Jodha name with Hira.
Why to create tension because of disputed history? He can not prove that Akbar married Zodha and court will take time and it will affect his film.
Moreover content of the film and its release is important as a film maker or fight over the disputed issue? ;)
A released film with name changed is always a better situation than sitting in frustration over a film which could not be released.:-?
these gags are becoming an essential part of the queer marketing strategy for a film like JA which is gradually losing interest due to delayed release….and it’s a win-win for both the Sena and Ashu :)>-
There is a (religious) short story… or a bhajan, in which there is a mention of JodhaBai, Akbar, Birbal.. Shreenathji…
… and it is believed to be a true story, apparently.
I cannot find a link for it..
Hi,
Its true that Akbar didnt had any wife named Jodha. He married one princess from Jodhpur but she was not named Jodha. Also that princess was not mother of Salim. And Salim had a wife named Jodhabai.
Thankfully the film makers(of Jodha-Akbar) are not denying this fact and they have done there homework too.

Mugle-azam has such a big impact on society that people from there childhood beleives that Jodhabai was wife of Akbar. And thats what lead to film producers to create(imaginary obviously) stories and make movies on that.
There are many such myths about our history(even recent history, we see them in chain of movies made on Bhagat Singh) which are very distant from the real facts. It would be good if film-makers try to stick to the fact as much as possible or else declaring the movie a work of fiction and not confusing them with real characters.
Thanks.
This is hilarious. How can people with all that money for filmmaking make stupid blunders like this. Its really retarded.
I hope they find a way around this problem.
if asutosh can just mention before with the trailer that there is a bit of debate on jodha’s status…and he has just adopted one of the storis for his moveis…it will be ok. anyway, even if jodha was akbar’s wife, the whole story of the movie cant not be true. most of the things are fanbricated…who knows what akbar talked in private to his wife…where did he take her our…when did they fight…or wheather they love each other or not? it can simply be accepted that its a pictursation of one of the popular stories.
we should accept this film .please
