John Abraham : The next big thing?

This post is sponsored by

Just stumbled upon the projects John Abraham is working on… now with a dropped jaw I write this post to list his future releases

Kabul Express – for Yashraj Banner

Happy Birthday – with Sriram Raghavan (director – Ek Hasina Thi)

Ashayen – with Nagesh Kukunoor (director – Hyderabad Blues, Iqbal, Dor)

Rock Star – with Imtiaz Ali (director – Socha Na Tha and writer – Ahista Ahista)

No Smoking – with Anurag Kashyap (no introduction required)

Suddenly he seems to be working with many of the Gen 21

Why this sudden leap of faith by the Gen 21 in John? Is he the only available actor? Or John has proved his credentials after working in Water?

he is one SMART bugger.. woh aur uski chhamiya bips.. dono.. they both know that the “commercial” projects are gonna come their way anyway (john – garam masala, dhoom; bips – phir hera pheri, jism) so why not experiment with the gen 21s and claim working with “acclaimed” directors? (john – water, kabul exp; bips – corporate, omkara) it might not give them more money, but with the endorsements et al, do they really need it? look on the plus side, these new-age films get shown at filmfests all over the world = more exposure = long term viability for projects = more $$ in the longer run. needless to say, the smartest star couple on the block.. my hats off to both of them =d>

    2. sumeet on October 5th, 2006 4:23 pm

I like John.. his honesty his down to earth behaviour( From the reports i/we read). Maybe thats what the Gen 21 liked about him too. But, He is surely benifiting from the latest trend in Bollywood about Multi-starrers. Would you think he would have survived, if he was back in 90s? or even early 2000’s where most of the movies were pre-dominantly single star movies. I dont think so.

Make Hay when the Sunshines…. ohh yeah last heard.. he is working for FREE with Anurag Kashyap for No-Smoking..hmm

    3. kartik krishnan on October 5th, 2006 8:30 pm

I dunno …. I liked him in Jism where looked really sincere and honest. No other film have i seen the same amount of performance.

And yeah he still needs to prove his acting skills, to me at least. Havent seen Water so can’t comment.

      But sumeet about ur comment
“he is working for FREE with Anurag Kashyap for No-Smoking”

Naaaaa …. maan … sounds too good to be true ….
We all know how these ’stars’ (Anil kapoor, Hritihik Roshan) have treated AK in the past

The news also is that No smoking is being produced by Vishaal Bhardwaaj …. And if he can get an Omkara to be released, then an AK film toh is definitely possible …

    4. sumeet on October 5th, 2006 10:18 pm

@ Karthik.. No for real John is working for free with AK. We kinda get an idea from your take on the conference where someone said.. how much new generation is wanting to work with AK.

Vishal Producing.. wow.. very interesting. We know AK and Vishal have very high regards for each other, and when these two dynamites come together.. we are gonna have a feast…

it’s a good thing. if those movies get release in UK then it will get a lot of promotion – movies won’t go unnoticed. \:d/ But I thought gen 21 wanted people to see their films cos of them, not cos of star actors? So why have him?

anyway, apart from kabul express are all those projects 100% finalized?

    6. Honhaar Goonda on October 6th, 2006 1:18 am

      @striker

i think he has learnt that from none other than Amitabh Bachchan Ji. This is what Amitabh Bachchan Ji is good at that, hence he gets best of the both parts of the world.

And he is doing this movies cos he know that he will learn more about acting and he will get paid for that.

    7. striker on October 6th, 2006 6:06 am

kartik, agreed.. john’s acting skills have yet to be proven.. and if you haven’t seen “water,” you’re not missing anything… both in terms of the film as well as john’s acting.. in fact, if anything, seeing him in a dhoti actually threw me off while i was watching the movie.. deepa should’ve stuck with akshay kumar..has anyone seen “white rainbow”? it’s made by sivaji ganesan’s nephew, dharan mandrayar, who incidentally lives in LA.. this one has sonali kulkarni..

    8. anurag kashyap on October 7th, 2006 9:09 am

john is not working for free with me..though he has taken a cut..on his price and his hair..:)

    9. sumeet on October 7th, 2006 5:46 pm

My Bad!!! for the wrong info.. we got the word from the master himself. Thanks AK!! Good luck for Non Smoking. John took a hair cut huh!! Sweet!!!

    10. Sudha Elavarti on October 10th, 2006 1:38 pm

      He is having a hair cut…NOOOO :P
John sure comes across as a sensible guy as far as movie selection goes. He has a long way to go.

    11. illuzon on October 20th, 2006 2:09 am

Apart from the gen 21 directors, John is a big hit with conventional filmmakers. He is also doing Ravi Chopra’s Baabul with Big B and Rani, Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-E-Ishq ( I clubbed him here since I, personally don’t think him to be a Gen 21 fimmaker).
John is a smart cookie who blends style and substance beautifully. That’s why he is able to have both sides of the world ala Water and Garam Masala.
Personally, I feel his best work remains the ones he did with Bhatts — Jism, Paap and Saaya.
Especially, Saaya where I think his performance went unnoticed.

    12. RK on October 20th, 2006 2:21 am

Sorry in advance for the observation if its not right. But if my guess is correctm then in all the Bhatt Film’s ( or may be in other films also)John did not do dubbing his own dialogues, he was given someoneelse’s voice. and perhaps this guy was in RGV’s Naach. in Naach he approaches Antra mali with a script and film offer knowing that she has close proximity with Abhishek Bachchan and if she brings AB junior in this film he will get the finance. Is he Rajesh Khera?
He is adequetely educated with a management degree and will be knowing his selection of films when he is in demand. But John must take less care of his dimples and more on facial expression. Filmmakers have exploited more his looks than his acting talent till now. Its less his fault because he was new. and he must use his own voice for dubbing.

    13. RK on October 20th, 2006 2:34 am

John started well with Mahesh Bhatt’s films which were kind of first in that genere and all his films in Bhatt camp worked well. He got films with Amitabh in the very begining of his career. He had looks and physique in his age group new comers. He did not involve in any kind of controversy and showed openness towards all kind of cinema offered to him without being judgemental or showing him intellectual who knows everything. He was outsider in film industry and he played safe unlike few filmi background actors of his lot who were making comments on everything. He had an open live-in relationship with Bipasha and she has been very much in news.
He made friends in filmi world and that paid him. He was the only bike lover other than Sanjay Datt and with through knowledge on bikes. thats a style statement in youth of these days. But his liberal attitude has helped him a lot. Otherwise even talented actors stay at home in hindi film industry if they dont keep good relations. John was not certainly to correct hindi film industry and his attitude certainly is paying him dividend.
Moreover he was clear that he is not a great actor and he has to learn and thus he kept low profile and with directors it worked as they need flexible mould. If they are good then they can make him act well. As Gulzar did with so many so called mediocre actors. John’s personal attitude and behaviour is moving him ahead.

    14. illuzon on October 20th, 2006 3:12 am

yeah, rajesh khera was in naach

    15. Sana on December 26th, 2006 9:33 pm

Love John Abraham. Met with him while he was in Toronto and meeting John is like meeting an old buddy. Though, we had never met before his modesty is such that it makes you feel like the star. He drops the subject of him being gorgeous and talented and is quick to take interest on his admirers life. I’ve always said John chooses films which have risk factor, but he does them because HE believes in rather than which will appeal. A film like Water is barely something a JA fan would picture him in. But he’s proven he can not only take up a film like that, but do justice to it. Glad he’s working with people like you Anurag. No Smoking should be a treat to watch. Best of luck to the whole crew of No Smoking.
