JOHNNY GADDAR-MY STORY

JOHNNY GADDAR-MY STORY

This is not a professional review, just my feelings after watching Johnny Gaddar.

It was 10 am in the Sunday morning and I was talking to my cousin on phone “ chal yaar film dekhne chalet hai.” He asked” Kaunsi?” I said” Johnny Gaddar”…. “koi English film hai kya?”…. “ nahin re, hindi film hai par achchi hai aur suspense thriller hai”. He asked “who are the actors?” I replied “Dharmendra and a new hero called Niel Nitin Mukesh with Rimi sen” he laughed. But somehow I managed to convince him for the movie.

Now it was 2.45 pm in afternoon and we were at theatre. There was no poster of Johnny Gaddar. Only posters of Dhol and Dhamaal were seen. I asked for ticket” the ticket person asked “which film?” I said “Johnny Gaddar” “you are the first person who asks for Johnny Gaddar. There will be no show of JG because of lack of audience.” I requested him “let start distributing tickets I am sure people will come for tickets.”… He told if there would be min. 15 people then the show will be started.” …I waited before ticket counter, asked 2-3 people waiting outside the counter. But they were interested in Dhol. I got exaggerated and expressed my PFCan feeling to my cousin” saala logon ko film dekhna hi nahin aata! Itni acchi film chal rahi hai aur log dhol aur dhamaal 2-3 baar dekh rahe hai.” He again laughed ”dekh bhai, mein bhi tere kehne se hi aaya hoon. Arey yaar jab poster hi nahin laga hua hai to logon ko pata kaise lagega ki kaun si film hai? Shaayad Dharamji ko dekhkar kamsekam 2-3 log to aa hi sakte the”….Then fortunately one guy came who was also waiting for JG. We 4-5 people again requested ticket person to sell tickets and after so much discussion, he agreed to sell tickets. Finally 15-20 people were there for JG.

We entered in the cinema hall and one of the most thrilling experience of my life started. I was continuously watching film and people sitting around me. I calculated them there were exactly 19 people. When the titles rolled my cousin said “array yeh to purani filmo ke jaisa lag raha hai”. For first 10 minutes people were talking with each other but when the film progressed all of us were deeply involved in the movie. We were enjoying each dialogue, each twist and each turn in the movie. For each funny dialogue people were laughing. Though I felt story was predictable but it was not important. Due to sleek editing and script, none of the moments of the film was boring. Who has done was not important but how it was done was important.

Shriram Raghvan’s JG is true tribute to 70s thrillers like Johnny mera naam (name explains itself), Parwaana, Jewelthief and James Hadley chase’s novels. Music reminds of all those Vijay Anand thrillers. Thanks for the no full length songs which could slower the pace of the film. All of the characters were superbly written. All of them have their special purpose. And all the actors have played them perfectly. The other plus point of the film is that it is digestible to ordinary audience also. It entertains well and is not too heavy that only filmmaker can understand. May be there were some minor holes in the screenplay, but for a good entertaining thriller it is negligible.

As per my POV, the whole film can be described by Dhramji’s dialogue “shooruaat majboori se hi hoti hai. Majboori phir jaroorat aur jaroorat phir aadat ban jaati hai”,the dialogue describes the transformation of Vikram’s character who starts his acts in MAJBOORI and progressively becomes his needs and at the end it transforms to HABIT.

So at the end, We all 19 people deeply enjoyed the movie and after completing the film, there was little smile on each of our faces. Also we laughed at people who were coming out of Dhol and Dhamaal “poor guys, you have missed the true entertainer which is much much better than all of the current cheap stuff.”

P.S. I was expecting trailer of No Smoking. NS is releasing on 26th oct and i did not see promo of it in theatre. the trailers of Saawariya and Speed were shown. Why NS’ promo was not shown?

    Dear Shailesh,

Very good review. I have yet not seen the movie, but your review has compelled me to see it atleast once. I would sent you personal e mail, when I see it.

    Thanks

@ Shailesh :Thats the sad state of cinema…i am sick and tired of commenting on it. BUt I think johnny G was marketed well..they have the best print ads in the newspapers. This is a problem of acquired taste..the people who come to watch Johhny G or M-SFU are dedicated viewers. They know what they are doing. and when we like the film we can do a bit by spreading it by mouth..thats a good mode of publicity i think..its a safe bet but very slow to start with.

    Jwalant: thanks for the comments.
sourav: when the film which is produced by the same multiplex company where the film is shown…. and the poster was not shown. even there was no mention that JG is shown. I saw Manoram SFU’ s small posters in place of ohnny Gaddar and the fact was that Manorama SFU was not shown anywhere in my town. This is height of mismanagement.

@ Shailesh..do not know who is to be blamed. If you get a chance watch M-SFU. youll like it for sure.

    JOHNNY GADDAR!!

    What a movie !!
I would like to comment here that this movie ended up with no mistakes. its a perfect thriller which gets better and better towards its end.

The mail role for this movie is played by the Script, the script by Sriram Raghawan it self is so perfect that he would not have done much efforts on the direction.

The best part of this storyline is the responsibility given to the viewer, the one who watches the movie can not miss a single sequence of the film …and will have to sit and watch what sriram is showing , absolutely no space to start your own thinking.

I would not say that it is the best of the best but its truly a clean product with no Faltoogiri …..!

    A Must Watch !!

Overall, I liked the movie & its retro-feel. But most people I know who have watched (none-are film fanatics, as such. Still, the are ticket-buying public) didn’t like it

Cant comments from well known personalities (Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadhwaj, aamir khan, ashutosh gowarikar, Nasseruddin shah etc.) about the movie can be used to promote the movie…

I agree with all those who say that this movie has been a tribute to all the 70’s thrillers, i think it is as good as raghvans’ last offering Ek Hasina Thi. Wht excites me is the potrayl of raghvans’ charcaters in both these movies. Dharmendra’s dialogue in this movie also applies to Urmilla & Saif in Ek Hasina Thi.I saw this movie at 89 cinema in kolkata. some people came to see this movie only bcoz they were not able to get tickets for Dhol or Dhammal (lucky fellows…. i think);) they came out after the show and were very happy, since they enjoyed it.. the music of the movie was gr8.. and of course a good debut for neil nitin mukesh (probably having his own style of acting like, vivek oberoi)… hats off to sriram raghvan… keep up the good work.

It is a great tribute to the hindi cinema of the 70’s. It was really heartening that the director ackowledged the great master -Vijay Anand with his photograph at the beginning. After a long time i could enjoy a movie which had character suspense instead of audience suspense. A good debut by Neil.

    Dear Sailesh,

when you started your first line i could connect with the same setuation, when it happend with my film, when it got released, there was no poster in the theater though i had send the poster my self & when asked for ticket i was refused by booking counter by saying sorry sir film ka print nahi aaya hai, they didn’t know i was the producer & director of the film, and i have give the print to thater my self 36hrs before the first show time, good that you fought with theater to sell the ticket, and i wish i would have got dedicated film buff like you then, all the best for good work, and i am sure people like you will change the cinema experinace in India very soon.

    Love & Regards
    Junaid Memon

Thanks Junaidji… for your warm encouragement and sharing your feelings with us.
Large production houses are winning the race by hammering trailers and videos of the film on all the channels. May be this could not be feasible for small budget films.
Regarding your film “The Film” i thought that it is to be released yet. kab release ho gayi pata hi nahin chala.. sirf ek do baar promo dekha tha.
Any way all the best for your future projects.
    cheers…

Hey Guys! Thanks for the recco..saw the film yesterday and liked it…reminded me of thrillers in the 70s. Mind it..the hall in PVR Saket was full..maybe it was oct 2…so probably JG is picking up slowly!!
Alas!! couldn’t get company as everybody I asked said “pata nahin kaisi hogi, paise barbaad honge etc”… so had to go it alone…but was WORTH it!!

whateva any1 says.. JGis a brilliant move wid a superb screenplay & dedicated direction… it starts with a low note but as the story progresses the real thrill evolves.. sriram has a wonderful vision for such muvis & u can see that in the taking of so many shots & also the characters selected are very beautifully potrayed by all the actors.

hey sailesh……tumhara jo jhonny gaddar ke sath experience raha hai, uss se kafi milta julta experience mera bhi raha hai……
hua yu ki maine apne doston se kaha ki movie chalte hai, unhone pucha kaun si, maine kaha JHONNY GADDAR, sare bhadak uthe…”abe pagal hai kya aesi faltu filme dekhne ke liye hamare pass time nahi hai, jis film ka ata pata hi nahi wo hi bachi hai dekhne ko…DHOL dekhne chalenge” maine kaha bhaiyon dhol bhi dekhlenge lekin pehle mai JHONNY GADDAR dekhunga, mai bhi jidd pe tha apni. mere sare frnds DHOL dekhne gaye par mai nahi gaya uss din kahi bhi…..uske baad maine kai baar aur try kiya apne doston ko le chalne ke liye…par sab ne yahi keh kar mana kar diya ki hamare pass faltu paise nahi hai faltu filmo ke liye,
phir maine apne ek kafi najdiki frnd ko reqst kiya ki chalte hai, kafi request ke baad banda maan gaya, lekin jab shoe timing suni to mana kar diya……pure dilli me sirf do hi theaters pe film lagi thi aur unpe bhi kewal ek ek hi show the aur unki timing bhi 11:30 baje raat ki thi dono hi theaters pe……lekin phir maine usse kaha ki ek kam karte hai agar film acchai nahi lagi to film aur dinner meri taraf se….phir banda maan gaya par mera majak bahut udaya ki sale tu pagal ho gaya hai ek film ke liye tu kyun itna kar raha hai……..lekin finally hum 4 bande. 2 mere frnds aur ek mera chota bhai film dekhne gaye…………last me jab hum movie dekh kar nikle hai to mere dost ne mujh se kaha ” bhai i m really vry srry ki maine tujhe itne dino se latka rakha tha…….maja aa gaya film dekh kar yaar, maine aaj tak aisi film nahi dekhi”
shayad theater me koi aisa banda hoga jise film acchi nahi lagi hogi…..iske baad bhi apne 3rd week me hi film lagbhag har theater se utar chuki thi. aur iss se badi trajedy kya hogi hindi cinema ke sath.
mere hisab se iss saal 3 filme aesi aayi jinko har uss admi ko dekhna chahiye jise film dekhne ka jara sa bhi shauk hai …..
    1. Black Friday
    2. Chak De India
    3. Jhonny Gaddar
lekin in teeno filmo me se sirf CHAK DE INDIA hi har warg ke darshakon tak pahunch payi and all because of SRK and Yash Raj Banner. baki dono ka to ata pata hi nahi chala. sirf hum jaise majnoos ne hi dekhi. Aur ye hai sabse badi tragedy hindi cinema ke sath, aur aesi tragedys har saal hoti hai.
Jhonny Gaddar dekhne ke baad mere dimag me bhi yahi bat thi….” Who has done was not important but how it was done was important”……Hats off to “Sriram Raghvan”…lots more expected from this guy.
