Kalavaramaye Madilo – Audio Review
Kalavaramaaye Madilo (Anguish In The Heart) is Satish Kasetty’s second feature. His first movie Hope got him a national award (which tells us that Satish is a good director), and even though it had no songs, it’s got some amazing BGM by none other than Isaignani Ilaiyaraja (which tells us that Satish has an ear for good music).
And that’s reason enough for the PFC (the passionate for cinema, us all) to eagerly await his second movie’s OST, the fact that Satish blogs for the PFC (Passion For Cinema, this site) notwithstanding.
Without further ado, let’s proceed with what Satish and his team has to offer to his fans this time around.
His first movie had no songs and, as if to compensate for that, his second movie has eight… out of which, four are female solo songs, three are traditional classicals — needless to say, Satish’s second movie is gonna be a musical, probably about a girl, a music lover, who finally becomes a successful (professional) singer. We’ll know soon.

Kalavaramaaye Madilo…
Starring: Kamal Kamaraju, Swathi and Others.
Music: Sharreth Vasudevan
Lyrics: Vanamaali
Producer:Mohan.V
Director: Satish Kasetty
1. Kalavaramaaye (Chitra)
The singer who’s effortlessly breathed life into Sindhu Bhairavi (Paadariyen Padippariyen), Prema (Eenaade Edo Ayyindi), Minsara Kanavu (Manna Madurai), Virasat (Payalein Chunmun), Autograph (Ovvoru Pookalume) and gazillion other songs has done it once again!
And what a joy it is to listen to her croon about the character’s love for music in this hypnotic hymn!
Just look at the lyrics:
Kanu-lay Kali-pay… Katha-lay Teli-pay… Naa Loany Bhaa-vaa-ley…
కనులే కలిపే కథలే తెలిపే… నాలోని భావాలే
(My feelings… they look into my eyes, and they tell me tales)
Ala-lie Methi-lay… Kala-lay Kathi-pay… Way-way-la Raa-gaa-lay…
అలలై మెదిలే కలలే కదిపే… వేవేల రాగాలే
(Dreams, moving likes waves, are scoring a thousand tunes)
Pali-kay Swa-raa-lay… Ye-da-kay Va-raa-lie… Padaa-lu Paa-Du Way-La-lo…
పలికే స్వరాలే, ఎదకే వరాలై, పదాలు పాడు వేళలో…
(These notes that speak, are like blessings, and when they sing…)
Kala-vara-maa-yeh Madi-lo
కలవరమాయే మదిలో!
(There is an anguish in my heart [my heart skips a beat])
The subtle nuances in the tune, especially the wavy meter applied to the lines such as “padaalu paaday waylalo…” reminds one of Ilaiyaraja’s “…senthoora poove“.
Listening to Chitra when she goes “palikayyyyyyyyy….” one would be truly astonished. Even after 20 odd years of professional singing, her voice still sounds as fresh as it sounded on day one!
No wonder she is known as the Isai Kuil.
Vanamali’s penmanship and S.Vasudevan’s score (not to mention the amazing music sense/taste of Satish), together, makes this song one of the best title songs to grace Telugu cinema, and rest assured the number is guaranteed to stay (play) alive for a very long time.
2. Toli Toli Aasalenno (Chitra)
Sorry Keats, you should have said “A thing of joy is a beauty forever!” But then, you didn’t listen to this song sung by the nightingale (Isai Kuil).
It’s a beauty, it’s a joy, it’s a naive journey of a young girl in the garden of her musical heart – the place where every flower, named and unfamed – every tune, sane and inane – becomes a part of a colorful bouquet, that elaborate arrangement, her bower of muses.
Toli, Toli, Aasha-lenno, Ray-pu-tun-na, Til-la-na…
తొలి తొలి ఆశలెన్నొ రేపుతున్న తిల్లానా…
(Young wishes, churning out a symphony)
Mana-sunu, Mee-Tu Tun-Tey, Kot-ta Paa-Ta, Avu-tun-na…
మనసును మీటుతుంటె కొత్త పాట అవుతున్నా…
(Strumming at my heart strings, and behold! I am a new song!)
Listening to the song – you’d fall in love with the girl (the character)… for that innocence, the exuberance, and her musical nascence.
And, if the set up reminds you of “Aakashamlo aashala harivillu…” from Swarnakamalam – it was intended to be, perhaps.
3. Neelo Anuvantha (Chitra, Roshan)
A cute song – typical tiff between two young lovers. You’d find yourself thinking of “Yemma Kopama…” from Anaganaga Oka Roju. The tune is of the kind that grows on you after a few rounds of listening. The best part of the song however is Roshan, not Chitra. In spite of pairing his voice with THE Chitra he not only stood his ground but also makes an impact; his voice sounds not unlike Karthik’s, and Roshan is a very promising find. Good luck young man. May we get to hear more from you.
4. Kari Varadhuni (Chitra, S.Vasudevan)
Remember this scene?
Early morning. The teacher is unmindfully going through his daily ablutions at the river bank. The student, a young girl, is standing in neck deep water. Her young voice is quivering – both with fear and the chill from standing immersed in the ice cold water. They are practicing – doing the daily riyaz – in that serene dawn.
Gapa dapa dapa, gapa dapa dapa, gapa dapa…. – sings the guru.
Gapa dapa dapa… dapah – trembles the student.
Guru, unhappy with the student’s mistake, repeats the same aalap again in a rumbling voice this time, and the raaga gathers momentum, peaks and then pauses a beat, and then reaches new heights in a climactic frenzy.
You with me? Now, how about this other scene?
The shishya is singing a keertanam as a lullaby. The guru is in deep sleep. The shishya forgets the second charanam of the song and fumbles for words. The mahaguru, in his sleep, still prompts the shishya and corrects his lines!
SHANKARABHARANAM! The jewel of Shiva. The pride of Telugu Cinema. The brain child of Dr. Kasinadhuni Vishwanath.
Listening to this song కరి వరదుని, I swear, you’d remember the above scenes.
And the voice of Sharreth Vasudevan is a pleasant surprise! When he fervently starts rendering the swaras “Ga Ga, Ma Ma, Pa Pa, Ma Ma”… you’d would think you’re listening to Balamurali – if you haven’t seen the credits on the CD cover, that is.
5. Guru Brahma (Chitra)
This song tells us how big a classical singer she could have been, if Chitra had not chosen to sing for movies. There are a few instances where the swaragati, the note, goes into the highest cresendo, where a normal singer would feel breathless, and stays there and then it ends over there. Chitra! This song shows but a few glimpses of the true potential of her. The nature of the song (and even the setup, we’re guessing) is not unlike the “Vedam Anuvanuvuna Naadam… from Saagara Sangamam.
6. O Nene O Nuvvani (Hariharan, Kalpana)
Another duet. One of most sensual (sensible) singers of India, Hariharan, is paired with Kalpana, another promising singer, in her debut song. Watch out for this girl! Her voice has a pristine quality and all the potential to help her become a very good singer. This song reflects the feelings a couple has towards each other when they are truly, madly, deeply in love – they don’t see anything else in the world except each other, and their love for each other is all that matters. The mood of the song is similar to “Yamunaa Teeram…” from Anand
7. Sa Ri Ga Ri (S.Vasudevan, Kaspana, Priya Hemesh)
Most of the song is raaga-aalap… a guru is teaching his young students. And, Sharreth Vasudevan is singing away gloriously like Balamurali. Gawd! What a voice.
8. Pallavinchani (Chitra)
This song tells a story. A story of a daughter, her mother and father. This song is her public debut, and, she hopes, is the bridge that would bring her parents together again. This song is an offering that she’s making to her guru like father, and her god like mother.
Chitra renders this song perfectly, effortlessly carrying various emotions throughout the song. Very few singers in today’s generation can sing such a demanding song that needs them to vary their voice to portray the multiple hues reflecting the emotions that a particular character is going through. All the aspiring singers should practice this song to gain control over voice.
This song is the keystone (climax scene?) of the movie – and the tone of the song is not dissimilar to “Idi Naa Priya Nartana Vela…” from Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s unforgettable masterpiece Mayuri.
సంగీతమపి సాహిత్యం సరస్వతీ స్తనద్వయం అని ఆర్యోక్తి. ఈ పాట విషయంలో అది నిజమనిపిస్తుంది. ఈ సినిమా విషయంలో కూడా!
Thanks Satish, Sharreth, Vanamali and Chitra for giving us this wholesome album.
And Satish, after getting drenched in the music, we cannot wait to see your visual interpretation of these melodies onscreen.

Superb album! Just love the way the MD has used RD’s *gurgling technique* from Satte pe Satta for the interludes in the title song.
its really heartthrobe to listen every music lover.. especially who likes the quality of good lyrics and best tunes.. this album will give that immense plesure to all listerners.. hope the team will make another musical album like ‘kalavaramaye madilo..’ soon.. i wish them all the best for their forthcoming movie..
Had a chance to listen just once so far but a couple of songs got me hooked.
Chitra’s title rendition is a stand out, fell in love with her voice all over again.
Kari Varadhuni left me thinking of my summer days in my grandparents village where chorus would sing the sa re ga ma’s in the temple and we all would sit and watch…
Thanks a ton for bringing pure telugu music back!
Thanks a ton satish,
This is by far the best music album after godavari…with great music and excellent lyrics….
My fav are title track, O nene and Neelo anuvanta
simply outstanding album. I hear from other forums that Sharath has done music for some malayalam movies as well. The music is so unhurried and has no compulsions to add unnecessary beats and effects. For a change, the words are perfectly audible and the emotion clearly set. Sometime back I was lamenting in a different forum, the decline of quality of duets – this movie’s duets are beautiful and set in the classical mould. The way the responses come from chitra in a duet is a learning experience for any playback singer on how to sing in a duet. The technology is there, but as a sidekick, not overshadowing the vocals!! A truly welcome album!!
I have been listening to the songs from quite sometime…
Are you in love?
Are you happy?
Are you sad?
Are you missing someone?
Are you with your loved one?
Does some memory haunt you?
Are you dreaming?
.. no matter what your state of mind is… This music definitely will make your mood good….
One of the lines in the song Mathrudevo bhava…” says.. “Silanaina kariginche samaveda sangeetham…” and I believe that it is very true.. Music is Magic… It can melt all those hearts that don’t welcome love…
Listen to this music.. I promise you will fall in love… Gift it to the one you love.. you’ll be loved back
For all the souls in love… you have two amazing love songs :
“Neelo anuvantha prema unna..” when you have your tiffs…
“Oh nene oh nuvvannii…” for the expression of love… and my favourite line…
“Nee needalaga neethone unna nee jantanavvana…??.. Verevvaru unna Nee gundelona naa kanta neeru aagunaa..?….”… I mean the whole song is amazing…!!!
Hats off to the whole team… Wish you all the best.. and Good Luck.
And pray that andari Kala varam avvlai ani…
God Bless.
Loved it. Looks quite a sincere work. Chitra at her best :-)
truely an outstanding album to hit the eardrums of the listeners in a rhythmic way.
music is truly magical…
words… divine…
that mean what we are awaiting for is
Poetry on Screen….
Even the “kalatapasvi” would break his penance hearing to this music.
Sharreth Vasudevan, who happens to be a disciple of Dr.Mangalampalli Balamurali is another GEM to Tollywood Music Scene. and his rendition on the aalap.. Sarigari.. is magical and he sounds more like his guru…
Chitragaru’s renditions…. no words can describe the magic she has infused into the tunes and verses and more to the flavor of the music..
I bow to all who made this masterpiece…
It wouldnt be wrong if i say… another National Award is waiting for you…… ;) … or rather more than one for the film…
Music is Divine….
I am malayali, i heard about this film thru sathishji’s blog. A salute to Sathishji for a great effort. All songs seems to be a gem. I dont know the meaning of the lyrics but the tune and Chitraji’s singing was mindblowing. Thanks a Lot Sir.
Title track left me speechless. One of the best albums i’ve heard in recent times. It’s like a whiff of fresh air. Great job, Sharreth & Satish.
@Satish In your interview to idlebrain, you’ve talked about a surprise awaiting us… in the form of background score.
I wonder if it’s done by IR..! (just like he did for Hope).
Wishful thinking
@kiran, the background score is by Sharreth sir only. every one who heard the audio of the film are saying that it is good, so in that reference i was saying, look out for the background score it is also very good.
Thanks a TON to the whole team…
It’s been very long time listing to the real telugu lyrics, Music and Voice…
I heard this kind of music in Kalatapasvi K Viswanadh’s movie and again in Godavari. Now in ‘Kalavaramaye Madilo’ (KM).
The album is Excellent
This is not like Movie album for everyone who loves Chitra’s magic voice..
It’s Chitra Album for her fans and Gr8 feast for Music lovers…
